I had the same issue with headphone jacks but I found a cheap and simple solution. Buy a 1/8" male to 1/8" female, then just plug your headphones into that. But don't remove the adapter from the recorder. That way you don't wear out the recorders female port, you wear out the adapters port instead. It's much easier on the wallet to replace a cheap 2-3$ adapter than it is an entire recorder.
You should also get a right angled mini jack adapter, it puts less pressure on the skinny little mini jack port by sticking out less and not getting caught on stuff.
Audio is such an under appreciated element in movies, and the primary reason (I think) is that when it's done correctly, it isn't something the average viewer notices on a conscious level. I noticed right from the first film of yours that I watched (Lights Out) how much of an emphasis you put on sound. I'd never seen a short YT film with that much richness in crisp audio. I especially liked the touches you added where we hear the heavy buzzing of the flickering light, and the little *click* when she manages to finally put the plug in the power strip.
Oh my god, youre swedish? I am too! Im currently a 12 years old girl and i want to be a movie actor when i get older, sometimes i write my own stories and act to them when my mom isnt home, i want to be in a horror movie since i love horror movies so much. Someday i will maybe make a imovie shortfilm or a fake trailer because i cant do anything else, but its still worth it :) You give me so much insperation and make me feel like i have hope to be in a movie when i get older, thank you!
Just shoot as much video with your friends as you can, you will get better and learn new things as you grow older. By the time you are 18 if you want to do it as a career you will have a foot up on the competition ;)
THANK YOU! Ive always wanted to get into sound. Every question that I was thinking in my head from the beginning of the video and by seeing your equipment was answered. I know this video is old but it really helped me out and gave me an idea on how to get started.
Thank you very much for sharing your tips. I got to know about your work because a college recommended me "Lights out" from then I couldn't stop watching all your videos. Keep it up! You're such an inspiration.
I think your videos are some of the most creative and effective entries into the horror genre on UA-cam, they all make me want to continue aspiring to be a filmmaker. This video was also very informative and insightful, sound is probably equally important to the visual aspect of movies. You have a very fresh approach to film and the fact that a major studio has caught wind of your talent is beyond me. Keep it up!
you are very talented, i have been trying to learn as much as i can about videography for the last 2 years, and watching this video made me realized how important is audio, 50% and 50% i'd say thanks man
what an informative video, how nice. I'm just making an apresentation about sound in cinema for my film studios class and I ended up here in your video. it was veyr enjoyable to watch and I got more interested in this topic. cool!
I come from an audio world, so crossing over into filmmaking, and watching a bunch of amatuer films with bad audio, I feel like I kinda have a leg up. I was worried about issues with field recorders like you're having, I was super picky about what I purchased. I went with Tascam because I'd used their recording equipment in bands in the past. I've never used zoom's products, and hear everyone raving about them, but I'm a creature of habits so I stuck with what I am familiar with. I'm really impressed with it. Thank you for sharing your experiences. I didn't think to have the actors re-record their dialog like you mentioned. I'll have to give that a try. Thanks again. Happy filming!
Hey David! I'm giving a lecture on sound design tomorrow for students in 2D/3D animation (my second ever) and this video helped me quite a bit, in fact I may just play it for them. Just want you to know you are a great inspiration. (btw I was shocked to learn that we're the same age, you were born a day before me)
idk if you read comments but your channel is the most inspiring channel I have encountered on youtube. Great work on Shazam btw can't wait for the sequel.
Absolutely love David and his quick tips videos as such. Would be a great opportunity just to be working through pre-production to post production with him. Just look at the hacks he uses!
I discovered your channel with a video of Cade a Chave and Coisa de Nerd talking about their cameo in Shazam. Now I'm in love with your channel. Sorry if there's any english mistake.
I've learn allot from these videos I'll be big soon, can't wait to work with you D4darius, and other UA-cam teachers, I've learned pretty much all my skills from UA-cam University God Bless you all 😄🤝
I too use Reaper as I've been using it for years since 3.1 and record music, podcasts and jingles for youtubers. I began using a memorex outdoor recording unit for found sound in music and later film audio. I am retiring from my role as a civil servant soon and will return to getting back to it. Good video
I don’t know why but you feel a sense of belonging when a person have some things in common even though they’ve never met or actually have any real things in common (though we’re both creatives). Well, I felt that first seeing you at Lindholmen and then the shot from Olskroken (I live close by). Anyway congrats on your success and thank you for your inspiring videos.
+ponysmasher I just re-watched this, it's actually incredibly funny on top of being, of course, very informative. Now you get to play with the 'proper' gear a lot more I guess...? I only have the zoom H2N for now. And no usable camera, so the filmmaking will have to wait, thanks to a very annoying burglary late last year. All the best for your feature film!
Hey, I just wanted to say this video is really awesome and you've given me some heads up for how to improve the sound for the future short films we'll be making in Uni. Thank you! :D
Thank you for this video. Very interesting. I like how you've made movies that grossed hundreds of millions of dollars but remain incredibly humble and talk as if you are just starting out as a filmmaker.
great video! With a lot more people becoming movie makers with their nice dslr cameras, I think sound is what is going to separate the amateurs from the pros.
Different width pvc pipe can be used to make a retractable boom, for fairly easy and cheap. The headphone jack issue is from repeated stress on the jack(pulling on the cord left and right over and over during use. You can normally resolder the original jack back to the board, or replace the jack for almost nothing( the soldering really isn't that hard.) Audio Jacks are the absolute bane of everything audi. They have a terrible failure rate on everything i've ever used with any regularity. I hope to see some sort of buffering wifi/bluetooth gadget released that removes the cables while keeping the clarity(one can dream(though honestly This isn't asking for anything very complicated(maybe it exists and I just don't know about it.))
Marantz makes some nice recorders like the PMD661MK2 that are in my opin a step up from Zoom and Tascam they do cost a little bit more. And if you ever do get the budget then Sound Devices is in a whole other class but they make some fantastic Field Recorders, but if sound is ultra important as it is for you with the way you use it, then it might be worth investing in something top notch down the road, instead of buying many less reliable pieces of consumer gear do it one time, as SD are also very reliable work horse machines. I have one of there MixPre mixers and its built like a tank never any issues with headphone jacks ever. Just some ideas. I have to say your short movies are fantastic, so well done also love all the behind the scenes footage keep up the great work, love watching your films. I hope you get a KickStarter together to fund a full feature film, I am sure the community would help fund it, with your proven ability to do so much with so little, let us all know. If you ever do decide to upgrade to a slightly fancier stick check out the Falcon Boom Pole on Ebay from Lux Cinema they are quite good made of carbon fiber and much cheaper then all others but well made for the price and much lighter then any painter stick just my 2 cents. You guys rock!
I use the Zoom H5, the newwer version of the H4n. IT works great and it has dials so you can turn the sound up and down easy when recrding. I have used the H4n before, and I find it har to adjust things on it. I reccomend the H5, and it's not too expencive!
When I was watching shazam, maybe it was because I hadn't watched a movie in a fancy theatre in a while, but one of the first things I noticed was the quality of the sound design.
I absolutely can't stand horror films and never watched or would watch one in full, but your videos are very interesting. So thank you for making them! and do more non-horror stuff pls :P
For a video that's 7 years old a lot of your audio workflow is still common practice today. Although I was triggered when the train horn didn't have Doppler shift applied to it as it passed from right to left
When using REAPER, have you considered a more efficient layout that gives you extra screen space to use for editing? If you grab the master track (by holding left-click on the little tab below it) you can move it to the right and then slide that section so only the master bus is visible. That way all your vertical screen space is available!
Love this video, David, I take it you have managed to purchase a decent audio recorder by now..? Another good alternative for a budget boom pole is a cheap monopod. Can also double up as a monopod.
Can you believe that this guy is now directing SHAZAM?
Frank Vendetta and the movie released today it was awesome 👏
Wow
Makes me happy
Yep. Unfortunately the movie felt like a low budget fan fiction.
His previous films for all of their faults were really great.

Brilliant.
this is actually very clever
But ridiculous that you have to do this after spending $$$ on the equipment in the first place.
You should also get a right angled mini jack adapter, it puts less pressure on the skinny little mini jack port by sticking out less and not getting caught on stuff.

Thanks! Glad you noticed and I agree, the sound is usually the main giveaway that you're watching a low budget film.
Good of you to devote an entire episode to sound. Sound is often overlooked, but to me it's most important. Thank you.

For a boom pole, you can also use a monopod, has the screw thingy on it for zoom recorder etc.
You’re making a great example with frugal and minimalist filmmaking while still getting fantastic results!

thanks soo much sir, my inspiration you are. love from India. you are my role model
Great vid!
I used Zoom for recording demos at the studio years ago. It did a good job for many years. :)
great video! With a lot more people becoming movie makers with their nice dslr cameras, I think sound is what is going to separate the amateurs from the pros.
I love this kind of video, useful and funny
I would love to see a full version of 'Dödligt arv' someday.

The sound design was one of the greatest things about Lights Out. It really made it stand out from other Hollywood horror movies.
Great Video! Really enjoyed your evolution haha Same as me more or less
this channel is great
Good Work Ethic is just as important!
Don't give up!!!

You can use Curtain Rodes available on the Amazon for cheap.

That BMCC combo with the Tokina 11-16 (I assume) is a winner combo. I use it all the time!
LOL I didn´t expect that action and sound from the guy at 6:37 So funny!
