I forget which interview it is but Pete Docter tells a good story about test screening Monsters Inc. Basically an audience member said "I want to see what happens when Sully and boo get back together, who is with me." Which is the point, youre supposed to want that, but you should never see it, because your heart and mind will create the actual best version.
But because of that Pete Doctor had to fight of the executives for a while to realese the version we got. Which is so good, because if it had just been shown to us it would have deflated the whole ending.

But they totally missed the opportunity to use that in Monster University; the movie was OKish but at the end we can see the characters' progress into the company, I was all "Yes! The movie will end showing, or at least teasing, the friendship between Sully and Boo!" but totally missed the opportunity to redeem themselves. Instead used the boring bit of the snail and blew it all.

Post production can be an isolatory process and a test screening can frequently snap a director's mind back to reality in terms of what kind of movie they actually made.

4:08 I firmly believe that this is perhaps the biggest problem filmmakers encounter when getting notes. People will say, "I didn't like this" or "this upset me" without any real discussion of whether or not it's important for the narrative that they be upset in that moment. Great stories need moments of sorrow along with moments of joy. Furthermore, discussing any scene in a vacuum is an example of missing the forest for the trees.

    1. You’ve talked about the value of you know something about post production effects work, and the value that has provided you in working both with VFX artists throughout the process but especially in the editing room when you can sometimes comp together placeholder effects on the fly. Given you didn’t go to film school, I’m wondering how you learned this. I’d be curious to watch a video similar to the one on sound about your learning journey.
    2. Simulait but more meta, how did you learn to animate and what is the process that goes into making a short video like this? I’m a school teacher who’s interested in exploring the form of video essays in more detail, and given this is somewhat like a video essay I’d be interested to know how it was made in terms of both the writing process and the animation.

There's also stories about how two different test audiences were shown two different cuts of Suicide Squad. Some people that said they saw one cut said it was a really great movie. Those people claimed that the actual movie that came out wasn't the same as the one they saw at the test screening. Supposedly WB also got the company that edited the trailers to edit the movie due how well everyone reacted to the trailers and the version that was edited by the trailer company was the one that was released in theaters. Also the other cut that was shown at test screenings had a darker tone similar to the original trailer shown at Comic con rather than the other flashier trailers that featured the songs Bohemian Rhapsody and Ballroom Blitz. I feel like examples of when test screenings involving two different cuts of a movie usually ends up with a bad outcome.

@@danielterrell2191 "I feel like examples of when test screenings involving two different cuts of a movie usually ends up with a bad outcome" That's because you only hear about it in special circumstances, when the final movie is bad. Showing different cuts is done _all the time._ It means nothing. Also, you can't really derive any meaning from one person's account of the different cut of Suicide Squad. It could've been better, could've been worse. No matter what, it wasn't finished anyway at that point, so it would've changed in some ways regardless. I definitely think that they butchered Suicide Squad due to the response to the trailer and the success of Guardians of the Galaxy. But honestly, I think the "other version" (in quotes, because there never is just two versions, they're in a constant state of flux) would've also been bad, just in a different, darker way.
