Other than " Introduction and Allegro for Harp,Flute and Orchestra" this is the best work for strings Ravel ever wrote.(Don't forget a Harp like Classical Guitar are both also strings)
Agree with your ranking completely. Rumour has it, he thought it was a 'failure'.....and also, rumour has it, he LOST his own manuscripts for Intro & Allegro while out for the day on a boating trip. Retrieving them eventually with some bother. Both are exquisite writings for strings but the latter is exceptional and one of my favourite pieces of music of all time.
Listen to the Capet String Quartet to hear how Ravel would have heard this piece. It's a far cry from this bland, modern performance we hear here. Emerson needs to learn about the use of vibrato, portamento, and rubato in music. Why doesn't the current obsession with historically accurate performance ever apply to this music to nineteenth and twentieth century music.

Extremely well-played and flawless, but I wish the Emerson would take a few more chances once in a while. Perfect blandness.
The second incredibly fast compared to most renditions. This is incredibly reckless but very well done with minimal mistakes
