First of all I am not affiliated with Faro in anyway but I own a Faro G2 ANR and I absolutely love it. The noise cancellation is superb and it is extremely comfortable for long cross country flights, not to mention the build quality. As of 2023 it retails for around US$350. I am a huge advocate of ANR and I’d recommend this headset to anyone from a student pilot to an airline captain. Currently trying to persuade my peers to get this headset.
Check with your glasses too. Sometimes the arms and ear support can become uncomfortable with the cup pressing on them, against your head and the bone just behind the ear.
Many love their Bose headsets but some people (including me) find the infrasonic rumble of the Bose ANR really annoying after an hour or two. As with any piece of audio gear, audition before you purchase. You may find the Lightspeed Zulu 3 ANR more suitable, especially after a few hours. Something about the way Lightspeed implements ANR prevents the infrasonics that the Bose allows (creates?) Also the app with the Zulu 3 is great for recording ATC clearances and such, easy interface to record and playback what you thought you would remember but forgot. Here I’m speaking for GA, not sure if the airlines allow you to record ATC.
I have the Faro G2 is a great headset, but it is heavy and is a batteries hug, As a student pilot I fly about one hour to an hour and a half per lesson. you can feel the weight on the headset aft a while and the batteries last about 4 to 5 hours, then you get the dreaded red blinking light letting your know "Feed me Batteries Simore". Can wait to upgrade to something better and leave the faro g2 for the copilot seat: differently not recommend faro g2.
Just an update to this, I've recently flown with a Bose A20 and new Lightspeed Zulu 3. Whilst the anr is marginally better on the Bose (trust me, you need great hearing to tell the difference) the atc sound reception was better on the Zulu 3. Whilst overall I think the Bose is slightly better, it's not £200 better. You also get a 7 year warranty with the Zulu 3.
Here's another great option - Get a Bose QuietComfort 15 or 25 (NOT 35) consumer ANR headset ($300 on Amazon USA) and an UFlyMike extension for $270. It's almost half the price than a Bose A20. Take out the UFlyMike extension and you can use it as a daily music headphone for commutes.
I'm an Aircraft builder and all the customers buying our aircraft buy the A20 as added option. They really are worth the price. You can get the A20 without the Bluetooth which will be slightly less than the Bluetooth ones. As the captain said ; save up!
Personally tried out the A20 and it's perfect in all ways without looking at price but it is too quiet. Yes you heard it right, way too quiet. I've also heard stories about accidents where pilots missed alarms and cues due to their high quality ANR headset. I've tried the A20 whilst flying an LSA in Australia and I do find it very snug and comfortable but so quiet to the point where I have to struggle to hear the engine. Now I bought a $895 David Clark DC ONE-X and I can't wait to try those out, reportedly one can hear engine noise, just less (much less) rumble and generally less of it. But yes I agree with all the points on buying your own headsets, it's much better.
Great video as always Petter. Keep up the good work. As I do the maths on my A20. It costs me about 25cents/hour (price/hours worn) still looks like new and has a high resell value. so if you fly a lot on noisy Boeings, get yourself a A20. you will not regret it.
The Bose A20 is really expensive but it's really really good. I bought it half a year ago and I can say it's really worth the money! Especially the active noice cancelling is superb!
Just purchased Bose A20 and love it, but would prefer that it has an option of pure wireless option like the Lighspeed Tango but with an option to plug a wire to it as well, so it would be a removable wire when needed and complete wire free when needed.
What headset did you use before the Bose? It's great you finally got an upgrade, but I'm interested in what you were using recently and how happy you were with it.
Is it correct that you used the Bose QC15 with a UFlyMike before getting the A20? I am currently using that when training, and I feel that it is a very good option considering the cost. Extremely comfortable, good sound quality and a good mike. I know the QC15 is an old model now and might be getting harder to get, but I still see it pop up on sale from time to time. And it seems like UFlyMike is launching a QC25 version now, so that should be a good option for those that already have that headset.
You probably figured this out by now but for those who haven't you don't need to hear in order to know if u had a failure or not. You'd feel it cuz ur nose will fall a bit. The only thing that sucks about ANR is it's a little bit harder to lean the mixture but you'll learn. I'm glad I bought the ANR.
Whoever is interested in the Bose and wants to listen to music via blue tooth, you might want to double check if it's possible. I have a 2 year old Bose and the blue tooth function only works for phone calls, music has to be listened to with the cable provided. I think I remember reading this on their site awhile back, but I could be wrong and have never tried.
Having seen this video before, I add an after thought. I am not a pilot but if I am going to get on a bus or the Montreal metro for long enough to be worth some music, I also have a noise cancelling headset for that. Granted it is not aviation quality (and by no means cost the $2500.00 or so for the Bose model you recommended for pilots, but than I am not a pilot.) In public, I also remember that sometimes it is important not to totally forget one's surroundings, so occasiponally I remove the earphenes to "listen around". This might also apply to the bose model, if an owner is using it in non-cockpit cumstances, of it there is any suspicion that there may be abnormal sounds present that might indicate a propblem arising.
@ mentour . I am glad you made this video. As I'm a B737 700/800/900 pilot myself I wanted to know about the hotmike option in Bose A20 headsets.. to elaborate the communication between ATC and the pilot is done Normally but what about the communication between pilots inside the cockpit? As it is a noise cancellation headset we won't hear anything from the other pilot or we will have to ask the other pilot to hold PTT every time we talk? Please do reply back to my query.
Re the Bose A20: 1) Since it has bluetooth capability, does that mean some airlines will forgid pilots to have possession of it in the cockpit, or does it simply mean that they are not allowed to use the bluetooth feature when flyng? 2) I looked it up from Bose Canada and here it sells for $1395.99 CAD plus usual taxes (about 15 %, depending on province.).
I forgot to mention: while I am not a pilot and do not own a bose a20, I do have an active noise canceling headset which I can use on the busses to listen to my android and thus reduce much of the road noise. At age 72, after over 1 million Km. on the road, I no longer drive, but in the larger Canadian cities urban transport is usually better than in a comparably sized U.S. city, as it is government regulated, and the government (at least in Quebec) brokers the transportation providers.) so, for example, if one of your pilots should land at YUL (P.E.Trudeau International airport, situated about 10 miles west of downtown Montreal, they might look for either the 747 airport express (if they have a lot of baggage) ir if not, look for the 204 in the direction of Dorval. In a few minutes on arrival at the Dirval terminus, switch for the 211 direction ease (downtown) and use the elecdtronic card you got from the 204 as your electronic transfer.. If you are to be here for more than 1 day, ask in the metro (underground rubber tired subway) about l;occasionelle >>
Finally! Thanks, I have been waiting for this video since almost the very beginning of the channel :D. So as I understand, most airliners have a dual plug connections, just as in a general aviation, or is it only the case with the 737's?
AFAIK, except for Airbus group aircraft, essentially everybody else uses the dual-plug. The Airbus connector is better, but unfortunately it isn't the standard.
Hi Mentour, I'm wondering should I buy my first headset sooner rather than later? I've only got 20.5 hours flight experience done but I am going to be going for my commercial license.
How about the Telex 850? I'll be flying the a320 and was wondering if a single sided head would be ok. I would think since it's a jet the noise wouldn't be as bad as one of those propeller airplanes.
I have a question (maybe for a future video): in how far can a airplane fly through bad weather - does (heavy?) rain/snow/hail/... affect the the security of the plane in the air and in how far in the landing process and on the runway? Got the idea while looking outside the window... ;) Greetings!
captain I have a question, I'm 19 years old not wealthy at all but have a ok job, I want to do this modular like you did can you give me a list of every exam and what to do indipendantly rather than flight school
I am not a pilot at all, but I have to say ANC (active noise cancelling) is not for everyone. Some people like myself feel pressure in their ears when ANC is on, which makes ANC almost painful to use for prolonged time periods. I have Bose QC 35 II and they are really good, but if I knew in advance I probably would buy great passive isolating headphones for half the price.
I’m hopefully going to be getting a pair of ASA headsets for Christmas(just so I don’t lose 1000 dollars outright if something goes wrong in early training) and then upgrade to a Bose A20 once I get a cpl. This will also have the double benefit of a backup for a passenger/if the a20s break. Does that sound like a decent idea?
Oh wow, that Faro g2 is actually quite cheap. I'm starting flight training and I might actually get it. I just cannot justify spending over a grand on a headset when I don't even know how much I will be flying, but I really want to get an ANR headset, since I'm very noise sensitive. I can probably deal with using a passive for a few lessons, but going through that twice a weak would probably drive me insane, lol And it appears you can give back the headset in the first 30 days, so that is actually excellent.
Another tip from my side is to maybe include the price of the headset with your training costs. That's what I'm doing and that way I can afford the Bose A20 which is awesome in every aspect, especially the ANR! :)
I used BOSE A20 for a turboprop ATR72, that was nice. But later I discovered that on jet (737) guys just keep one ear open. So when I moved to 737, I just sold my BOSE.
An odd question: besides price and weight, would you recommend an aviator headset for general usage? For example music, movies and games. If not, why? Thanks!
NO , They are designed for aviation. They do work to stream music, But you would get a much cheaper , better sounding headset that's not aviation for general use.
I currently have Bose Quiet Comfort 35 II generally for music while commuting, can't say anything other than that Bose absolutely nails the noise reduction! So even though I'm not a pilot (yet), I have enough hours to really appreciate Bose!
I'm a candian private pilot. I bought my first headset before i began practical flight training... during ground school because of hygiene issues. I wanted my own lol. I still use it 2 years later now. It's an Arcus ANR brand, and it costed $800 CDN. I like it! pretty midgrade by standards id say, for cost anyhow.
Captain Soffian98 I’ve since this comment got a Bose A20. If I were you I’d invest in a Bose a20 it will last forever and is an amazing headset! The Faro died with a year of me buying. Just pay the extra money for a better headset that will last forever
Hej Mentour, i want to buy a Bose A20 but i heard something about the presure on top of your head. What is your experience with that? That was also the only negative thing i heard. Proceed with your interesting video`s , i like them
Yup. That's what I've got and although the QC35s don't have the rugged build quality of the A20s, the ANR gets the sound down in a GA aircraft to a pretty decent level. About 82db. That's like the loudness of driving a car. The Avee mic is excellent although a good bit expensive. But, for about 500 Euros less than the A20, it's a hard combination to beat.
I actually own some qc25's . Good headphones. I suppose if you did clip on a noise cancelling microphone it would work . You'd need to use noise cancelling microphone otherwise atc wouldn't be able to hear you. Buying it all in 1 unit would be so much easier and less batteries to change.
ill be staring my private pilot training this winter. My concern is how long a headset should last me? Should i buy an economical one now, and the best when I get hired by an airline? Or should I buy top quality like the Bose A20 now?
Radio static is not common, especially for VHF. If you're getting static in your headset, there may be issues with your aircraft VHF Comm transceiver or Audio panel. You may be using a cheap Icom :/ And to answer your question, the Bose headphones are quiet as a mouse if your aircraft equipment is good.
The real answer is no. The headset reduces noise from the cockpit picked up by a microphone. Radio static comes from the radio. You will need a DSP inside of the radio to reduce that.
What did you say ? I can't hear you :D But seriously bose are good. I have some noise cancelling bose headphones I use daily. It is amazing how much outside noise they actually cancel (especially low rumbling type noises) And yes, bose are expensive. They are still going strong after 6 years even though I've had to replace the ear cushions a few times and the cable a few times (naughty cat likes chewing it)
I've watched a few of your videos and I think you're one of, if not, provide the most comprehensive videos regarding comm. aviation. Question: Maybe you've already addressed this and I missed it but can people who are color-blind ever earn a PPL?
Just a few quick questions with the ANR capabilities of the Bose A20, what’s the high frequency noise attenuation like (I know about the lower frequencies)? How many decibels of noise reduction do you get (Bose are very vague)? And can you wear glasses with the headset and not get any major reduction in the ANR? Considering buying a set... many thanks James
Depends on the sunglasses. Rayban Aviators work really well, obviously because of the tiny stem, but my Oakley Holbrooks also work well even with the ticker and wider stem.
Yes, but they're not cheap, and building your own is a hassle since the connectors are hard to source. Here are links for the helo-to-GA and GA-to-helo adapters. If you can find a lower price than Spruce, I'll be surprised. www.aircraftspruce.com/catalog/pspages/pilotUSA8.php www.aircraftspruce.com/catalog/pspages/pilotUSA9.php
Hi Mentour. Are you provided some push button or something to activate the headphones so that the ATC gets only what you want to speak? Obviously they wont want to hear everything you speak with your First Officer so there must be some provision. Also does this vary in Airbus and Boeing models? If you could do a podcast on communications too it would be great
You have to press the PTT (Push To Talk) button on the control yoke in order to transmit anything through the radio to ATC. This is mandatory on all radio-equipped aircraft.
Pilots can not lie about their hours because those hours are also recorded not only in the pilots log book, but also in the aircraft journey log book. This is how the maintenance is scheduled. There is also an engine log book. All hours must add up, and must match all the other books.
Pilots take great pride in every hour they get. Besides, sometimes it is time for a new book. Putting history aside. Makes a great library for your children to read one day.
Alex Sakin Air Crash Investigations did an episode on it, "Inner City Carnage." If you don't want it spoiled then just watch the episode. *Spoilers* The accident was caused by two idiot pilots who lied about their hours. You can go ahead and lie, but the big question is: Why? Those who lie about their hours obviously are in aviation only for the money as they put their lives and those of everyone around them in danger because of their lack of experience, recency, and proficiency.
can you do a review on david clark one-X vs bose a20, thanks

Amazing headset, Never had a problem with it. even forget that i wear it!!
You can’t go wrong with the Bose a20 they are by far the best!
Love my David Clark's... But of course once I get the money for it, I'll move on to the A20
Do you think not having active noise reduction is a big deal? I'm looking at buying one.

Surprisingly interesting video. Thanks Mentour!
Thank you!!!!! I´m new in the aviation world and you, in just few minutes, has given me the solution for my headset dilemma.
What headset did you use before the Bose? It's great you finally got an upgrade, but I'm interested in what you were using recently and how happy you were with it.
Can you explain the plugs of the aviation headsets. is it different from the normal headsets.
I recently switched from the Bose QC15/uFlymic because the mic broke yo the Clarity Aloft Pro. So far, no complaints.
The Bose are the best hands down. I bought mine when I started training 4 years ago and my other friends who used others have all switched to the Bose
Is it correct that you used the Bose QC15 with a UFlyMike before getting the A20? I am currently using that when training, and I feel that it is a very good option considering the cost. Hello! In your opinion, is it true that a NON-ANR headset in general aviation is safer because you can hear the engine and it's potential failure?
You probably figured this out by now but for those who haven't you don't need to hear in order to know if u had a failure or not. You'd feel it cuz ur nose will fall a bit. All the best captain 👍
Not a pilot, just a fan... But I found this very interesting. Thank you.
I was thinking of buying the clarity aloft sytem and then use my Bose ANR ear phones over top. My ear phones does not have a mic.

Very helpful video Mentour!
I was thinking of getting the david clark h10-13.4. Seems quite nice at a reasonable price.
I have a question (maybe for a future video): in how far can a airplane fly through bad weather - does (heavy?) rain/snow/hail/... affect the the security of the plane in the air and in how far in the landing process and on the runway?
Got the idea while looking outside the window... ;) Greetings!
LOLametro good question, and would like to know also if there is thunder storm over the aerodrome or in vicinity?
Well, it depends on what kind of aircraft you are flying and how bad is the weather ahead.
That's a really nice place to make your videos and I like the flowers and the flower vase its really beautiful👍
Thanks for the awesome video!!
Can you make a video explaining the icao English test, please, and why not your experience with it
What was the first headset mentioned? A 4OG2?
What are some good apps which will help me to prepare for suitability tests??
captain I have a question,
I'm 19 years old not wealthy at all but have a ok job, I want to do this modular like you did can you give me a list of every exam and what to do indipendantly rather than flight school

I have heard that anr technology reduces low tone only so it is not that useful in a jet airplane which has higher noise frequencies. Is that true?
I’m hopefully going to be getting a pair of ASA headsets for Christmas(just so I don’t lose 1000 dollars outright if something goes wrong in early training) and then upgrade to a Bose A20 once I get a cpl. Oh wow, that Faro g2 is actually quite cheap. I'm starting flight training and I might actually get it.

And it appears you can give back the headset in the first 30 days, so that is actually excellent.
Hello Mentour Pilot. Is the noise level in the cockpit different from that in the rest of the cabin? Is First class different from coach?
I have heard that A20 only compatible for GA aircrafts and some helicopters, but not airliners, is that true?
quick question were do they keep the pets in an airplane
Another tip from my side is to maybe include the price of the headset with your training costs. That's what I'm doing and that way I can afford the Bose A20 which is awesome in every aspect, especially the ANR! :)

How would you compare the A20 to the QC15/25+uFlyMike? If I am not mistaken that is your previous one.
And you should check Clarity Aloft!
the newest version does work without batteries in passive mode.
An odd question: besides price and weight, would you recommend an aviator headset for general usage? For example music, movies and games. If not, why? Thanks!
NO , They are designed for aviation. They do work to stream music, But you would get a much cheaper , better sounding headset that's not aviation for general use.

You can also try AVEE, microphone add-on for Bose QC25 and QC35! No need to spend 1000$ for a good system!
4th like and 4th comment........ I sent you guys am email. keep up the good work 💯💯💯
Non-aviation question : What's the intro music?
ill be staring my private pilot training this winter. My concern is how long a headset should last me? Should i buy an economical one now, and the best when I get hired by an airline? Or should I buy top quality like the Bose A20 now?
The A20 should last you 7-10 years.
I want a bose but they are 1000 dollars!
Where is your pilot uniform? Have you been sacked?
which plugs does the 737 use ? like on GA (2 plugs) or like Airbus (single plug 5/6 pins) ? thx
Two pins.
Mentour Pilot just to confirm like the general aviation aircraft ? what about the 737 MAX same as the NG ?
Great Video
Quick question about the noise cancellation.. do those headsets, reduce the amount of radio static that's common in ATC traffic?
Radio static is not common, especially for VHF. If you're getting static in your headset, there may be issues with your aircraft VHF Comm transceiver or Audio panel. You may be using a cheap Icom :/
And to answer your question, the Bose headphones are quiet as a mouse if your aircraft equipment is good.
The real answer is no. The headset reduces noise from the cockpit picked up by a microphone. Radio static comes from the radio. You will need a DSP inside of the radio to reduce that.
What did you say ? I can't hear you :D
But seriously bose are good. I have some noise cancelling bose headphones I use daily. It is amazing how much outside noise they actually cancel (especially low rumbling type noises)
And yes, bose are expensive.
Yes: www.aopa.org/news-and-media/all-news/2012/january/01/answers-for-pilots-color-vision
Go to an aviation medical examiner and see if you can obtain your first or second class medical and if you can you should be able to get your ppl
When you get your personal headset, how would to connect it in the airplane (737, not GA)
Same twin plugs in the 737 as in a GA aircraft.
Different another place.
Where is there? Hotel?
May I ask (as a fan) where would you position Sennheiser S1 in the range?
Just what I wanted to ask! Hopefully, @mentour_pilot could answer this one!
thanks captain
Just a few quick questions with the ANR capabilities of the Bose A20, what’s the high frequency noise attenuation like (I know about the lower frequencies)? How many decibels of noise reduction do you get (Bose are very vague)? And can you wear glasses with the headset and not get any major reduction in the ANR? Considering buying a set... many thanks James
Depends on the sunglasses. Rayban Aviators work really well, obviously because of the tiny stem, but my Oakley Holbrooks also work well even with the ticker and wider stem.
Hey mentour, i just want to ask if the zulu 3 head set's mic is interchangeable to left side for copilots. thanks
It's not to answer your question
What kind of connectors does the headset need for most aircraft ?
You want a headset that has two plugs on it. The single plug type are for helicopters, military and Airbus.
Yes, but they're not cheap, and building your own is a hassle since the connectors are hard to source. Here are links for the helo-to-GA and GA-to-helo adapters. If you can find a lower price than Spruce, I'll be surprised.

Do you have a backup headset in case of a failure in the headset or cord?
Sure. The sweaty, beat up, employer-supplied one that lives in the airplane. :)
Do you have to have a TSO rated headset for the airlines?
Officially, yes. Is a Fed in the jumpseat going to inspect your headset for a TSO sticker? Probably not.
Hi Mentour. Are you provided some push button or something to activate the headphones so that the ATC gets only what you want to speak? Obviously they wont want to hear everything you speak with your First Officer so there must be some provision. Also does this vary in Airbus and Boeing models? If you could do a podcast on communications too it would be great
Shalem Obadiah in an Airbus 320 for example there's a black button at the back of the sidestick. I think it's the same in a boeing aircraft. ✈
You have to press the PTT (Push To Talk) button on the control yoke in order to transmit anything through the radio to ATC. This is mandatory on all radio-equipped aircraft.
Nice video. Just missing the pricing for Zulu and Bose as you didn’t say anything about it. Google rules)) like your accent!
Includes paid promotion can't trust him😥
Every pilot will tell you to buy either Zulu Lightspeed or Bose A20. If it's your career, these are really the only two you want
@@Ichibuns what about AKG AV100 ? not good? i an in a the quest of searching for one.
@@saeedag4468 I haven't actually tried those. Any good reviews on them?
@@Ichibuns from what i saw it seems to be good but I dont know how well it compares to these ones
@@saeedag4468 AKG Does not even make aviation headsets anymore . I wouldnt even consider that a option .
Mentour what is your intro music name. Please give it to me! Please :( When you know.. :)
Are you whit Ryanair?
GOOD
Are you planning on watching SULLY the movie?
Mentour Pilot omg, you actually replied! Made my day 🤗
I heard it is a good movie and i'd like to hear your experience in an upcoming video
I have seen the Bose A20 Headset £900,very expensive.
Thk you again.
how do pilots record their hours and cant they lie about it
Pilots can not lie about their hours because those hours are also recorded not only in the pilots log book, but also in the aircraft journey log book. This is how the maintenance is scheduled. There is also an engine log book. All hours must add up, and must match all the other books.
flyifri how does your logbook not fall apart after 1,000 hours of use
Pilots take great pride in every hour they get. Besides, sometimes it is time for a new book. Putting history aside. Makes a great library for your children to read one day.
Alex Sakin Air Crash Investigations did an episode on it, "Inner City Carnage."
If you don't want it spoiled then just watch the episode.
*Spoilers*
The accident was caused by two idiot pilots who lied about their hours. You can go ahead and lie, but the big question is: Why?
Those who lie about their hours obviously are in aviation only for the money as they put their lives and those of everyone around them in danger because of their lack of experience, recency, and proficiency.
nicest intro ever
Bose all day long
And skips the David Clark headsets
Was this sponsored by Bose, if so....
Do you have your own headset?
I kind of posted the comment before the video started! 😅
2nd like and 1stt comment
Almost everyone uses BOSE... so obviously..
A review without actually having tried any… duh
