Yeah man you aren't kidding. I was going through horrific withdrawals and the main thing I remember is how horribly the hospital staff treated me. I was having delerium tremens, violently shaking, felt like death etc... One of the doctors who always seemed frustrated made a comment like "you did this to yourself". I told him to get me discharged ASAP so I could go to another facility. Sometimes I wish people would go through alcohol withdrawal just once so they realize how scary and difficult it is.

Hello, thanks for watching! So very true! I have had a dr tell me the same exact thing.... you did this to yourself. At the end of the day, I did, but we are still human beings. We just want to be treated with respect. Especially when you are in that kind of shape. You are already going through he'll, just treat us nicely.... that's all. We are already beating our own selves up enough for what we have done. Some actually understand, I had a nurse ask me how I quit the last time I was in, he told me that he has a drinking problem and really wants to stop. He was super nice to me. Thanks again, God bless.

Nurse and alcoholic (in remission) here. That method of giving dilaudid in the syringe is one way to give it. She forgot. Also, if your BP is low, giving you narcotic pain control can lower it further. If you're walking to bathroom on low blood pressure, it can lead to a fall and for a bleeder like you - a fall could be deadly. But yes, it is a complex disease that we perpetuate on ourselves when we don't stop drinking. Your vids are important to educating health professionals and the public. They will be part of a legacy you should be proud of. You may consider hospice care when appropriate where they do focus on comfort where pain meds are concerned. In nursing school, many of my papers and presentations were about addiction and how mistreatment of the addict could send them right back out to use again and being mean or cold to this patient is unacceptable. I consider us soldiers in this quest to educate others that this disease is likely in our cells and souls simultaneously and we need compassion as we trudge to recover while not allowing us to manipulate the system into putting us into an early grave.

My heart goes out to you. The last thing someone in pain needs is to be judged, ignored or reprimanded. Sadly that happens in every institution of man. Hospitals, nursing homes, orphanages, prisons, military...I hate it wherever it's found. I 100% believe you. Addicts, elderly, obese, and more suffer from these idiots.

I was a paramedic on a plane going home for my parents 50th wedding anniversary that has sudden onset abdominal pain, They took me off the plane by ambulance at the stop over in Chicago, ILL - spent the night by myself in a strage city ER with no relief. In the early morning hours they gave me a viocdin on an empty stomach and discharged me. I puked it up on the sidewalk. Fast forward to getting to my destination and going to OR for an ovarian torsion. A records request resulted in records that said I was classified as a drug seeker by someone in the ED. Not a clue why. I learned my lesson and changed my whole perspective for the rest of my career. Hugs.

It is a shame how some people get treated for merely being in severe pain. My wife had several episodes of severe acute pacreatitis over the years and I remember a few times where they were reluctant to give pain meds. Although that usually changed quickly when they got her blood work back and her triglycerides were like 10,000 or higher and she was completely sober. Some nurses or doctors just assume the worst with no evidence. And, like you said, if someone is in legitimate pain their past history of substance use doesn't matter in that moment. Giving pain relief is just the human thing to do for those who are suffering.

I start to have a panic attack when it gets that bad. I'm not kidding. My mother can vouch for me. I might get her on one of these videos. She was with me at my last ercp and when I woke up, she didn't know what to do, I was crying, screaming, shaking, my mother is a retired nurse. She is disappointed in how I get treated. When the actor Matthew Perry was in rehab and started to experience severe abdominal pain, the rehab people wouldn’t take him seriously and said he was just seeking drugs. His assistant took him to the ER, where his colon exploded. The medical profession has a long way to go in taking care of people with addictions.

You would think the stigma would be gone given that we have the statistics of those that are addicted. I’ve battled alcohol my whole life. This last episode took me out and I had to go to the hospital. They treat you poorly bc of why you’re there instead of treating the illness.i made them let me go AMA, and I schooled the 25 year old intern on how to treat someone in my condition. I told him I have better meds at home than what you’re giving me. Cut me loose. I’ll take care of myself at home with my wife. Melatonin…..gtfo.

Funny thing is, you forget how bad it really hurts after it's been a while. You just don't remember how bad it really hurts. I have never cried so much in my whole life though... ever. I do remember that, and literally flopping around on the floor because I hurt so bad. Hitting the call button most of the time makes me feel like they intentionally take longer for some reason. Idk.. My son has been discharged from the hospital after being treated for a 12 blood sugar...He was unresponsive before he went to the hospital... Point: I have been a nurse since 1987. I have never seen such poor treatment especially since the Corona Problem...my son's disease began 15 years ago with the Chronic Pancreatitis, Diabetes, Alcoholism...His care drastically changed over the years to totally Abusive...He did have a 6 month sober period after the Diabetes diagnosis...sadly he had that first drink February 2021 and could Not Stop and gave up and drank himself to Death... Literally...
I had 8 years sober at 1 time and honestly AA was the only thing that helped me get any Good non drinking years...it is possible tho...my son really suffered...he was so sick it was hard to get to meetings...I am so grateful I found your channel because you Give so many hope! Former EMT who primarily did interfacility psychiatric transfers. I've never had a substance use issue, but I have other mental health stuff and grew up around a lot of people with substance use issues. We transported a lot of people with addictions, be it alcohol or opiates or meth or whatever else, and people with a wide range of other conditions (everything from depression to bipolar to schizophrenia). The mindset that was taught to me in training was essentially a) "you are not here to judge", b) "who even are you to think you have any right to judge", and c) "who are you to say that in their shoes you'd be doing any better". It saddens me (although it does not surprise me) to hear how much of the rest of the medical profession doesn't share that mindset, and how many providers come to the table with judgment instead of empathy and the benefit of the doubt. People don't go to the hospital because they're having a great time and everything is dandy, and it's certainly not healthcare professionals' place or position to kick people when they're already down.
Also, on withholding pain medication: I would've understood if they'd withheld it temporarily because your BP was too low (certain pain medications can lower your BP so that can be dangerous if your BP is already low, but at that point they should be addressing the low BP so that they can get you adequate pain relief), but waiting for it to get high before administering it? It makes no goddamn sense. Poor pain management slows down or halts healing. Just because you had/have an addiction doesn't mean you don't also need pain management. That attitude baffles me. So many things that are important for healing (movement, sleep, eating, etc) cannot be done well if you're in severe pain. And it is much harder to get pain under control when it is already severe than it is to tackle it when it's moderate to avoid letting it get to the point where it's severe. Also my BP and heartrate both run low; I went to the ED for abdominal pain that was pretty severe a few months ago (thanks, endometriosis) and neither were elevated compared to textbook normal. My resting heartrate is a little over 60, textbook abnormal is 100+. Most people run in the 70s or 80s, so my heartrate would have to jump twice as much as some other peoples' to be considered abnormally high if that's the only metric you're using. There's a reason you treat the patient and not the textbook, and that's because (shocker) patients are not textbooks.

    • @liverdisease-qb6rk
      @liverdisease-qb6rk  7 місяців тому

Wow! Thank you for that comment. That is very insightful. Yes, it really hard to get the pain under control when it gets really bad. Better to get control of it on the front end. I appreciate you saying everything in this. We just want to be comfortable while hospitalized. No one "wants" to go to the hospital, it's just not a fun experience. It's not disney world, that's for sure. I would so much rather be at home in my bed, with my family, and be able to take a hot bath when my stomach and back are really bothering me. The hot baths are one of the best things for the abdominal pain by far. I have had very low BP while in, and they did address it, they put a pick line in and were giving me meds to bring my BP up. They have told me before that my BP is too low before, i understand that fully, just when it's not top low, there shouldn't be an issue. I just haven't seen any videos on this topic, wanted to bring light to it. It's just not alcholics who get treated poorly. A lot of people get treated bad in the hospital. It's just unfortunate and I want to see it get better. I unfortunately have spent .months in the hospital at this point and have seen it across the board at all hospital institutions. Thanks for watching, and for the awesome comment. God bless.

You are quite educated on your disease, its really remarkable. Just goes to show that alcoholism and addiction can absolutely take over intelligent people.
I can speak from experience in healthcare that it is hard to separate the manipulators from those in need. Many addicts are expert manipulators, as manipulation is required to support their addiction. Now obviously that isn't the same for those in recovery. Sometimes its hard to figure out whos who, and frankly the manipulators burn workers out, really bad.

I’m sick of America and the hypocrisy. The country as a whole is sick and has been for a while. Look at the world we live in. Why do we think there are so many people with addictions?! This is a question that gets ignored and I’m sick of it. People over here love judging other ppl when they’re just as ****ed up and hypocritical as the next person. Look at the streets of America type in Kensington, Philadelphia!! I ignore what people say or think about me. Because 10 times out of 10 the person criticizing me has their own problems they need to deal with. We can’t even come together and demand fair and equitable healthcare.. in a place that spends trillions on misadventures in places like afghan.. 😂

If you go into the Healthcare field, it should be to help people, not just to make a check. It's not always about money, we are all humans and just want to be treated fairly and well. Especially when you are in a vulnerable place like being in the hospital and very ill. That's not the time to start passing judgement and treating people poorly. I hope this video gets out to more people so that it gets addressed. Thanks for watching, stay tuned, God bless.

I've been treated the same and I'm not an alcoholic or addict. I am a chronic pain patient. I have severe rheumatoid arthritis, osteoarthritis, lots of herniated disc in my neck and back. I've been seeing a pain management specialist for 15 yrs. I have to take pain meds daily to be able to work, I've got bills to pay. I was in the hospital a couple months ago with parainfluensa and double pneumonia. A couple of the nurses were not nice. The Dr prescribed my regular meds I take at home, along with fentenyl for pain. Laying in that bed was killing my back and hip. One nurse said well what do you do at home for this kind of pain? I said for starters, I dont sleep on a crappy bed, I'm up all day vs laying down, I dont have pneumonia. I didn't ask to stay here, I was literally almost dead when I arrived. Why treat someone crappy. Have some empathy, that's what being in Healthcare is about.

As for disrespecting a person in the hospital I’ve see some of that. I’ve been a critical care nurse and a wellness specialist. Because many patients can be their own worst enemy, assumptions often get made. It’s a vulnerable place to be that’s for damn sure!

Yes! It is! I'm hoping that doing these videos that the word gets out. No matter how slow, it needs to be addressed. It has to start somewhere. Just because I or someone else has an alcohol problem, doesn't mean that we will have a problem with every substance we encounter. I don't see the allure of pain meds, they do nothing for me other than ease tge pain. I really don't see what the hype is all about. But that's me. It’s called compassion fatigue. The issue is I believe has come about because of degree type training for the nurses, these people are chosen on their educational merit not on their caring and compassion. The old type nurses who trained on the wards mostly didn’t have compassion fatigue as they were in the role for the right reasons.

Great video thank you. I am an RN and former alcoholic. Who told you to take tylenol?? It is the most toxic medication to your liver. And anything that contains acetaminophen (tylenol) many cold/ flu meds do. 1 to 2 grams is a LOT. I'm not yelling at you I hope it doesnt sound that way in text I'm mad they told you to to take it! This is why it is always good to do our own research and not believe everything the medical community tells us. Alcoholism is an illness. If the patient is going to be blamed what about diabetes which can be caused by lifestyle, or heart disease or lung cancer. If you are in any medical related profession you are there to help not judge. They may be drug addicts or alcoholics but they are still human beings. most people who are in the hospital are there because "they did it to themself." Most diabetics are addicted to food and sweets. Most lung patients are smokers. Many people with fractures were lazy and didn't exercise. Skin cancer patients didn't use sunscreen. The list goes on. It's not the job of a nurse to judge you. Of course, to be fair, some alcoholics can be very difficult patients depending on where they're at with their addiction. Some of them lie, are rude or violent and have no appreciation. Either way, if you were none of those things they had no right to treat you that way so on behalf of medical professionals, I'm sorry. Hang in there - I enjoy watching your videos. Was going to ask you - are you still able to work now? What are you doing for money? I"d imagine that would be tough. Cheers.

I don't work at the moment. I haven't worked in over a year at this point. I don't feel well most days, I had my own business, and it was very successful. But it's too physically demanding. I just can't do it right now. I was in the restaurant industry my whole life and I definitely can't do that at the moment. My wife works and supports us at the moment, I was very good at saving money throughout my life. So that has helped too. It's been a real struggle, but we are ok, I just thank God I'm alive and able to be here with my family. I'm not making any plans at the moment, we live month to month. It's very hard, but we manage. Hopefully one day soon things will get better, we just have to get my health back in order , or the best they can. It's killing so many people. It happened during alcohol prohibition and has happened with all other drugs. I can't imagine being a kid these days. I hope you reported that nurse. Clearly she should not be taking care of people. Those traveling nurses make A LOT of money. Their work/care should reflect that.

Hey there again... thanks for watching another video. As a matter of fact I did. The charge nurse took care of me after that. I had no more issues afterwards.... on that visit. I hate having to say anything, but it has to be done. Thanks again... God bless

Hey, thanks for watching! I know that you dont want to go.... but... its the most important thing you could do for yourself. Yoh really could catch something before it gets too bad. I did the same thing, never went to get checked, ever. I ended up with so many problems because of it, its ridiculous. I really almost died. I cant tell you what to do, but it would be in your best interest to go. There isn't any woking or anything like that when it gets too far gone. You are just too sick. Keep me posted on how you've been doing please. Subscribe yo my channel if you haven't yet, ill be posting daily. God bless you on hour journey!
