      Greetings from the Caribbean...
As a fan of the original text AND also that version of the film you mention, it's noteworthy that the film has a different ending to the book. ..
Though I think Alexandre Dumas would have approved.

This count is more reminiscent of Jean Marais in the 1954 version, which is one of the most popular adaptations in Europe.
There will be Haydee who is played by Anamaria vartolomei and Benedetto played by Vassili Schneider.
And there won't be an Edmond and Mercedes ending like in the 2002 film that is hated in France, nor will Albert be the count's son.
The screenwriter and director promised that there will not be the same ending as the 1998 and 2002 versions

I read the book a couple of times. I still think this whole story would have been better if it was presented as a mini-series at least. There is just so much depth in the book that one movie can hardly do it justice.

There is the 1979 French miniseries with Jacques Weber.
The 1998 version is another aberration.
Why didn't Dumas make an Edmond and Mercedes ending together?
Alexandre Dumas read Homer (Dumas A., Mes Mémoires, Paris, Bouquins, 2003, p. 590)) and The Odyssey influenced the book The Count of Monte Cristo. In Book IV of The Odyssey, Telemachus visits Menelaus who won Helen back after his elopement with Paris. Helen was sorry for what she did, but still Menelaus needed to use drugs to forget his painful memories like Helen's union with Paris. This influenced Alexandre Dumas. Edmond would never be happy with Mercedes and would never forget her marriage to Fernand. This would always make him have painful memories. Their marriage would be deeply unhappy. Their union was supposed to be unhappy and Edmond would always need Hashish to try to erase the memories that Mercedes was married for 20 years to the man who ruined her life.
Haydee does not bring the count the painful memories that Mercedes does. More realistic for him to be happy with Haydée.

This is an adventurous film but, unlike the masterpiece novel, it is not an epic. Epic films give a sense of awe through its visual scale. Hired gun Kevin Reynolds isn’t concerned with a sense of wonder in aesthetics; focusing on the generic blockbuster template for adrenaline. Wonder requires awe. Awe needs patience to take it all in. This is exacerbated by a narrative that leaves little room for moments, instead driving to the next plot beat with breakneck speed.

I agree with other commentators that it would have been better if it were a miniseries, the book is looooong, but still this looks excellent. The actor playing the Count, I’ve seen in other movies and he is an incredible actor. The Caviezel movie I saw in theaters and own it but there was always something about it that didn’t agree with me, I’m not sure if it was Caviezel. I believed him as Dantes but not as the Count, I’m not sure why. But this looks incredible, definitely watching in theaters.

@@carlosyamara Personally, I really enjoyed the 4 part series adaptation with Gerard Depardieu. They had very realistic aging for Edmond Dantes because they just had his younger self played by Depardieu's son. There's a lot more time to get into the complexities of his revenge and for the development of some very interesting side characters who materially influence the way Edmond goes about his revenge, and the music is wonderfully dark and dramatic. It is French, so be prepared for reading subtitles if you're not fluent, and though I enjoy it, I will admit that to this day the very ending makes me laugh.

One of the most nuanced and unique adaptions of this book is an anime. Gankutsuo: The Count of Monte Cristo, puts a sci-fi spin on the tale but all of Dumas’ themes on betrayal, redemption, vengeance, hope, powerlessness, and divine intervention are all present. I’m interested to see what this adaption does with the source material, because I agree with other comments that it would probably be better adapted as a series to fit everything in.

There will be a miniseries with Sam Claflin as the Count, Jeremy Irons as Abbé Faria, and Bilie August as director.
Making the show feel contemporary while retaining authenticity was a task that August, who was inspired by 1975 historical feature Barry Lyndon, approached comfortably and he said making relationships “universal” was the key. “The bigger story itself is about a man who wants revenge and it will eat him up inside.”

      My 4 favorite adaptations:
The prisoner of chãteau D'if (1988)
      Gankutsuou
Le Comte de Monte Cristo (1979)
Le Comte de Monte Cristo (1998)
The count in book is multifaceted. He has a side that is to do good for the people he loves and cares about and there is his cruel side that wants to destroy his enemies, without thinking about the consequences.
And the book shows how destructive hate can be.
Because of this good side, he does not completely succumb to darkness and negative feelings. When he contemplates the results of his revenge, he questions morality.
The years of suffering made the count a bitter and cruel man.
The Count of Monte Cristo is very reminiscent of Crime and Punishment by Dostoevsky.
The count forgives and realizes that he is not above God and when Raskonilkov surrenders, he realizes that he is not the extraordinary man who can transgress the laws. In the end, they both realize that the justification for his actions were flawed when contemplating their results.
Haydee reminds Sonia Mermeladova, by abandoning his feelings of hatred, the Count will realize that he can be happy. When he leaves hatred aside, he realizes that there can be happiness.

The script of the mediocre 2002 version managed to convey the grandeur of the book's story.
After assuming the identity of the Count of Monte Cristo, Edmond is portrayed in the form of an avenging angel, bearer of impartial "divine justice".
The conviction of being an emissary of God on earth and the replacement of the divine figure with his own are striking features of the protagonist's new character, admitted several times by himself throughout the novel and which, consequently, lead him to decide for life and for future. death of the other characters, who can do nothing against the relentless and inexorable revenge that he planned with extreme care.
The radical transformation that leads to the birth of the figure of the Count of Monte Cristo, in my eyes, almost resembles the birth of the Nietzschean superman, despite the palpable distance (and not just in time) between Dumas and the philosopher in question. However, the superman abandons bourgeois values, understanding their uselessness in the historical context in which he finds himself, and does not fear a life without his presence, but on the contrary, being aware of being able to create new ones, he finds a sense of self even in his own existence and enjoys the infinite possibilities that present themselves to him.
Likewise, sweet Edmond experiences the same enlightenment described by Nietzsche: experiencing firsthand the cruelty of other men or of fate, as you like, he abandons any positive conception he had about the human soul (recovered then only thanks to the presence of the Morrell family in his life) and finds the meaning of his existence in the fulfillment of his revenge, completely entrusted to the wise hands of divine justice, convinced that it is on his side, as he demonstrates by making (metaphorically speaking) his spokesman and making each step work perfectly into his plan.
Edmond, therefore, is at the same time everyone and no one, as demonstrated by the creation of countless identities, each of which played a fundamental role in the fate of the various secondary characters, and often in continuous opposition to each other, such as Lord Wilmore and the Count of Monte Cristo, who personify two sides of the same coin. Stateless and at the same time cosmopolitan, the protagonist of this extraordinary novel, through his numerous travels, managed to become an exponent of all the contexts he visited, from the Italian one, of which he was able to appreciate in particular the Roman carnival and from which the figure of Abbé Busoni for the Oriental, which made him a connoisseur of traditions, herbs, poisons and natural remedies. All the strangeness incomprehensible in the eyes of the haughty and haughty Parisian society, which from the first moment considered this singular and unique man, who, if for some he seemed straight out of a story from "Arabian Nights", for others he seemed more like a vampire due to his pale and proud appearance.

@@Mr47CRO In Europe, this film is despised and was a huge box office failure.
Let's compare the stupid decisions of the mediocre screenwriter of this poorly written film with real facts to show what nonsense this film is. Just because a man wanted to marry a woman in the past does not mean he cannot fall in love with another woman, even if the couple has children. This nonsense, like love that never dies, only happens in Hollywood films, which in my opinion shows the ignorance of the screenwriters.
An example is Natalie Portman, her husband who is French, the two have been married for many years and he had an affair with another woman.
Let’s mention the film The Prisoner of château D’if (1988), an adaptation of the book The Count of Monte Cristo. The film's director was married and fell in love with the actress who played Haydée, the count's new bride. He divorced his wife to marry her.
But only in Hollywood films and only there that love never dies and a man does not find a replacement for his ex-fiancée and seeks to return to her. There are no parallel cases from the film in real life.

    • @Denisov-in7ji
      @Denisov-in7ji 3 місяці тому

@@Mr47CRO I said this because in the book Edmond falls in love with another woman and leaves Mercedes in the past. They made Albert the count's son as justification for Mercedes' marriage and as a symbol of their love.
And Mercedes using the ring as if that were enough for their relationship to flourish.
Which shows the stupidity of the screenwriter.
Only in Hollywood films does a man fall in love again and seek to fight and regain his old love. When we see real stories of men who left their families for other women, Hollywood comes with that false belief that love never dies. Take the case of Natalie Portman. But we never see a man struggling to get his old love back.

The script for the 2002 version was poor. And it comes with a horrible ending.
Jay Wolpert, the screenwriter of the 2002 version, does not have the intellectual level to adapt a classic.

The 2002 version is the worst written.
The traps are too obvious for anyone to fall into them, the way Villefort confesses his crime would hardly happen in practice with an experienced man like him.
And the screenwriter showed his total incompetence by adding the final duel scene like what happened in the weak Gladiator. Emperor Commodus didn't die in a stupid duel like in the terrible movie, he was murdered while taking a bath in real life. Not everything in life can be resolved with duels, but in a sneaky way.
And that romance was too forced. There are many women in the world to replace your ex-fiancée. A guy not finding a replacement for his ex-fiancee just doesn't happen in Hollywood movies, but it happens in real life. There are even men who abandon their relationships for a beautiful woman.
In "The Prisoner of Chãteau D'if", from 1988, we have the charming Nadira Mirzaeva as Haydee.
That's exactly what I imagined when I read the novel. And she really looks like a concubine in her translucent clothes.
It is this actress who, it seems to me, was able to convey the exact image of the sweet and faithful Haydee. And immediately you can easily understand the count: is it possible to refuse such a woman if she asks for your love?
It is known that director Georgy Jungwald-Hilkevich could not resist Nadira, and he even left the family and married her.

The 2002 version has a script with a one-dimensional story. Everything according to the exteriotype of good and evil.
The book's story is much more complex.
The Count's character is much more multifaceted, he has a good side, but an extremely dark side. And thanks to this good man of his, the count does not completely succumb to evil and becomes a cruel man.
The reason for the anonymous complaint was not Mercedes, but the job as captain of the ship. The person who came up with the idea for the anonymous complaint was Danglars and he managed to identify Fernand as his wingman, because he was in love with Mercedes. But the person who devised the entire plan against Edmond was Danglars. The motivations are greedy and not romantic since Fernand was in love with Mercedes and had an unrequited love for her.
The Count is a much more bitter and cruel man in the book. For him to justify his actions and transgress the law, he says that he is an envoy of divine providence to punish the guilty. He wants relief from guilt so he can go beyond the law and get justice.
His revenge has side effects and innocent people are harmed, which makes the count question the morality of his revenge.
And his bitterness towards Mercedes is so great that he is unable to reconcile with her. Unlike one-dimensional romantic comedy, there is such a great resentment that the count is unable to want a new beginning with Mercedes. Just as Mercedes realizes that the man she loved in the past no longer exists, the Count is not that happy man of the past, he is an extremely bitter and resentful man.

This is one of the best revenge stories ever written. I still have the 2002 DVD.

We had so many movies about the Count of Monte Cristo were they changed so many great moments and axed so many smart side stories. Not to mention the shortened events about his revenge. I am really asking myself why there haven been always single movies made, when a so-called limited series would make much much more sense. The classic book would deliver stuff for at least two seasons with each 10 Episodes! That would be really something I would like to see.

The father of the film's director and screenwriter, made the 1979 miniseries, which is the most faithful adaptation of the book.
This will be the eighth French adaptation of the book.
There will be a new miniseries with Sam Claflin as the count.

Hoping hat with 'The Count of Monte Cristo', the 'The Three Musketeers' double movie deal we got last year, the movie of 'Napoleon' we got last year and the movie of 'Chevalier' from about two years ago, this means we're going to get a biopic of Alexandre Dumas (the author of the Three musketeers and the Count of Monte Cristo) and/or of his father Thomas-Alexandre Dumas who was born a slave (the son of a French marquis and a slave he'd bought to be his concubine, his father sold his mother and sisters before returning to France, as good as pawned him off to pay some debts before buying him back, taking him back with him to France and freeing him) and rose to become the first man of African descent to rise to the title of general in the French army.
I mentioned 'Chevalier' because Thomas-Alexandre Dumas had served under Joseph Bologne, Chevalier de Saint-Georges when Bologne was made the Colonel in the first all-black regiment of the French army during the French Revolution, and Napoleon because he served under Napoleon but did not receive his payment from him for the time he spent imprisoned, nor did his widow (a white woman) receive the money given to widows of generals after his death from Napoleon.

Dantes was imprisoned because he was falsely accused of being a Napoleonic party, and because Napoleon's restoration failed, he could not overturn his conviction. The background of this story is very interesting.

The Count of Monte Cristo is my favorite book ever and I always watch all the versions related with this great story !!!
But please, I got a question for all the followers of this great character.
Don't you think this book should be taken to the screens in mini-series and not movie ?
I am writing this because I think that the time of a movie isn't enough to show all the details of this great story.
On the other hand, I have great faith that this French production will honor the book by Alexandre Dumas

This film is directed by Alexandre de La Patellière and Matthieu Delaporte, Alexandre de La Patellière's father, director Denys de La Patellière was responsible for adapting the book into a miniseries in 1979 with French actor Jacques Weber playing Edmond Dantes. This adaptation is extremely faithful to the book.
There will be a miniseries of the Count of Monte Cristo by Bille August and Sam Claflin as the count. It premieres this year and there will be 8 episodes
