    Caesar, thank you so much for the detailed explanations and product links, especially the mortar hopper!
    We have a man made arroyo next to our home to divert monsoon runoff here New Mexico. This technique will produce a much better result and faster than applying with a trowel, lol.

    In the pond shell, thorseal was the final texture then stained using a black concrete stain. As for the water fall, a final mortar and stamp layer was placed over the thorseal layer.

    Caesar - great work! What type of coloring did you use? It looked like you were rolling on dry color hardener and then spraying on a concrete stain?

    • @caesaryanez
      @caesaryanez  10 років тому

      Hey Michael,
      I used concrete stain by behr. The stain can be purchased a home depot. They carry a semi-transparent and solid. I used some of both to experiment. They both worked well. I used about 3-4 color combinations. You need to dilute the paint with regular water. Use a paint filter cone for paint before you add it to a spray bottle. Next have a spray bottle with plain water to follow along as you paint, the water will help you feather/blend the paint. If you every painted with oils or acrylics, the technique is similar. Never worry about making a mistake, if you do not like the look, you can always paint over it. I repainted the pond about 5 times until my wife said, "looks good" lol… women. oh… I also used a cheap throw away brush to help dry brush the stains, in other words using a feather blending technique to help spread the paint. Try not to have hard edges, soft edges tend to look more natural. In one of the videos I covered the paints. There are 10 videos I am not sure which video covers the paints. Last thing, home depot has a paint swatch for the concrete paints, if the color does not exist, they will create the color for you.

      Thanks for the fantastic response! I didn't realize you stained the tan/sand color too, I thought the stains were just for the 'wet/worn' look at the waterfall. I was going to try using a dry powder color hardener (H&C or Matcrete) but maybe stain is the simple way to go. Your pond inspired our design (4000 gallons) I must have watched your videos a dozen times!

      Michael Brown Hey Michael, glad the videos helped, if you wish to Skype or speak over the phone, email me caesaryanez@gmail.com and I can provide you my phone number o Skype username. I am sure you have tons of question and I will be happy to guide you in the right direction. I have taken courses on building fake boulders and I am very active in the koi community. I am the webmaster for several koi organizations. In fact I would highly recommend you join your local koi club. We are members of the Orange County koi club, "nishiki koi club" If you are located in the OC, you are welcomed to join the club. We meet on the second Saturday of every month. The meetings take place at the members homes, this way we get to study their ponds and ask questions…etc.

      +Valentina Galeone The powder is used as a release agent. You have a choice between a powder or liquid. Read more here www.concretenetwork.com/products-stamps-skins/release-agents.html I used the product from Brickform they offer many colors to choose from www.brickform.com/ColorCard.aspx?ColorCardID=17 (I believe I used 320 Golden Sandstone for my project) You can find a distributor via this page www.brickform.com/Distributors/ Good Luck

    I bought the hopper. I purchased two, one for walls and the other for ceilings. You should be able to find them online if you search for "mortar hopper". In fact visit mortarsprayer dot c o m. Moreover, they also have a youtube video showing the hoppers. I placed the hopper video URL within the description above.. good luck.

      "powder release agent" comes in different colors shop.thestampstore.com/browse.cfm/brickform/2,44.html
      The description reads: BRICKFORM Antique Release™ is a powder colored bond-breaker designed to prevent texturing tools from sticking while adding color, shading and highlights. It is designed to aid in texturing applications and stand up to the effects of sunlight. BRICKFORM Antique Release is applied to the surface of the plastic concrete and to the texturing tool. A portion of the release becomes imbedded into the concrete, usually where there is relief in the texturing tool, leaving behind an antiqued appearance. The release agent is streak-free and will add color and highlighting to the finished application.

      have you see this comment, not sure if this is what you were asking... Sand and cement for the spray using the hopper. Then a powder is rolled on to prevent the latex skin from sticking to the cement. Later the dried texture is stained with either chemical stains, I used a concrete stain that can be purchased at home depot (made by Behr) www.behr.com/consumer/products/floor-coatings-sealers-and-prep/behr-premium-solid-color-concrete-stain

    • @caesaryanez

      If you are referring to the time stamp 2:02, it is a release powder that prevents the textured latex skin from sticking to the cement/sand mixture. Release agents are also available in a liquid, but I prefer the powder. The powders come in different colors. Note, once the cement/sand cures you will use water via a pressure hose to remove the powder. Later you will use your behr concrete stains to achieve your color scheme.

    all that trouble to imprison some fish for cosmetic purposes, but it is an eyesore that outweighs the look it should give. It looks like some sort of fake landscape at a theme park and way too big for that garden too. Natural rocks would have been better.
