I am currently thinking about using a wood skeleton with wire mesh. Thanks for your advice if you have any! great looking results with your texturing! very inspiring
The cardboard is a great temporary form to create your rock…the strength of your rock is the shell. Depending on the formulation of the mixture you plan to use will determine how thick you’d have to make it. I always use the textile mesh not the wire mesh. Never ever make a frame with wood as it can get wet and expand and hydraulically break apart your Cement bad idea this I know from many experiences. With all that said, I make huge playground climbing wall equipment pieces that are about three-quarter inch thickness, and they support many children for decades. I'm trying my first cardboard rock.. but wondering what glue you're using before applying the mortar? Sounds like it also acts like a seal of some sort. Please let me know! thank you!
Sean, the glue you’re looking for is 100% acrylic carried in water as it’s an ad mixture for the Cement. You will see me use that very same glue to seal the cardboard an hour or so before I start muddying it so that the cardboard does not get wet and lose its rigidity or collapse. Thanks for watching.

What's inside the boxes? How do the screws stay in ? What is mixed in the cement? concrete? clay? Paper clay? There is just not enough detail here for me. Was this a part II to another video?
There is nothing inside the boxes… The screws have threads which thread into the cardboard … The mix is a proprietary, fiber, reinforcement, composite . Unfortunately, I only give that formulation out to paying customers whom I train. This was a standalone video project, although I have many videos were on building cardboard rocks, and detail more understandings to the viewer . Thanks for watching.

I just found your channel and I love the way this is turning out. I have a question, are these strong enough to stack and make a cave out of them and if so how long would it last?

Well we do after spraying the cardboard with the acrylic glue to give it a waterproofing so it doesn’t collapse or SAG from the wet cement is we oil it so that the cardboard cannot stick to the Cement in the box comes right out?
Thank you for this video. I have been making rocks for my large bank. Can you tell me what kind of glue was used? Also you said fiber cement. Can this be purchased at the hardware store? Thank you again. Your videos are wonderful!
Well, thank you for your kind feedback and I appreciate you taking the time to watch my video. If I were building rock for a large bank, I wouldn’t be building it as though you had seen me do so in the video. These rocks have a very specific application and need to be stronger and lightweight. Whereas your rock from the rock bank can be made with a regular mortar mix. I offer one on one training assistance for people such as yourself it might do you well to give me a call to discuss your options. The type of glue that was use was 100% acrylic glue and there’s a lot of different types of fiber that can be used. The particular mix that I used in. This video is only offered to those that I am training through one of my training courses. Thanks, Jim 971-237-2957
@@fauxrock thank you, Mr. Jim. I really appreciate your taking the time to respond to my question. I have been using regular cement for my project and it is going well. I'm getting better as I go. Your videos have been a great help to me.
I think Elmers glue is a latex what you wouldn’t want to use. Nevertheless, whatever glue you’re gonna purchase you need to find out if it’s 100% acrylic or not you don’t want anything but acrylic as an admixture.
We spray in acrylic glue on the cardboard about an hour prior to muddying it so that it waterproof the cardboard so it doesn’t receive water and lose its rigidity. We’re not using it as a bonding agent cause we don’t care if it actually bunch to the cardboard cardboard is simply a form with no strength or future hopes of strength occurring from it
Do you have a link to a video that shows exactly how to make the mud? I've never made a rock before, but I would like to try. And, since the fiber infused method is a "paid" version, could I use a layered method with screen of some kind?
Yes check out the link below. I utilize regular mortar mix from Lowe’s or Home Depot as well. I use mesh again from Lowe’s or Home Depot. #1 Cheap cardboard rock construction tech #cardboard #cardboardcraft #cardboardcrafts #anvil #forge ua-cam.com/video/s1jo8q9fIGg/v-deo.html

@fauxrock For me, I consider this a specialty trade that falls under landscaping, but not exactly. Like akin to seeing an orthodontist over a normal dentist. It's a fine-tuned art for a niche market and hobbyist. I've been drawn to this type of thing since I'm obsessed with prop making and Halloween. It also aligns a lot with the architecture that is built within line queues at theme parks like Disney and Universal Studios. Every time I visit these places, I end up analyzing the rocks and faux landscaping, wondering how I might be able to recreate such works of art myself. Thanks so much for sharing your skills and videos!
All the rocks in this video were first made by assembling random small boxes to make a bigger shape. Then we screwed the cardboard skin to the boxes and to each other sheet of cardboard skin or elder shell
All the rocks in this video were made first by using smaller boxes to make a bigger random shape… we then screwed an outer layer of cardboard to make an outer skin.
Yes, that’s true but in this application, we’re not worrying about sticking to the tape with the Cement as the cardboard form is just a one time use to former Cement shell
@@fauxrock thank you. Great minds think alike. Every city dump needs a pile off to the side just for DIY types to have a stock pile. I pay to have it delivered because it has many uses. Under my pools, as erosion barriers, but the carpet samples used like patches actually work the best as shingles. Also, using cardboard for mulch in the garden works great as well. Carpet for walkways and the moisture goes nowhere.

Dude, your rocks might last 100, maybe 200+ years. You need to put a message inside those rocks, inside the box, of a message to the future. If you can find one, maybe a newspaper, or...something, a little piece of history.
Actually, we have made time capsules just like what you’re talking about before where and we put relevant information that was dated so that in the future someone will unveil some history
When it rains it pours… there’s so many places across the United States that have no rock available to the consumer without purchasing from somebody who’s truck them in. Again, each one of us has different objectives and different solutions to meet those objectives. God bless each one.
Now now, Andrew, let’s be kind. Those were his first rocks and as time progresses. I’m sure he’ll make better looking stuff. He originally had purchased my DVD course, but then hired me to come up and do a hands on class with him and quickly I critiqued the 28 rocks he had already had made.

Keep in mind with anything I created a cardboard it’s simply a form not the structure, but a form I hope to be videoing some projects here in the near future still negotiating, but I’m optimistic. There’s a path forward.
My last company received a $250,000 grant from the state of California to prove out a building system that I created using used carpet and a lot of people laugh at that but I’m telling you there’s a lot of ways to build other than conventional ways stick with me sports fans .
@@fauxrock Oh that's wonderful. I hope you are successful. I live in the high desert of Central Oregon and I am always looking for fun ideas that will help construct a temptation control house.
@@fauxrock I'm going to be busy for awhile. However I am going to give you a call soon so we can talk more about this.
What is the glue you use to seal?. Is it an S.B.R., styrene-butadiene rubber, product?.
The glue that I use is a 100% acrylic water-based glue. Thanks for watching.
Hello. When will my painting part be?
As soon as we get to staining all the rock
These are pretty slick.
How large have you gone with these?
I'm going to be making mock ups for a pond build at home and garden show, this has piqued my interest! I might be able to apply this in panels to a wall to make a cave.
The largest rocks I’ve made up-to-date are 8 x 8 x 8, but I believe that you could go big or you just have to have more reinforcement
If i make an open bottom rock how hard would it be to remove the cardboard? I was thinking maybe i could just wet it to pull it out a little easier
Thanks,
Jim

@@fauxrock thank you, Mr. Jim. I really appreciate your taking the time to respond to my question. I have been using regular cement for my project and it is going well. I'm getting better as I go. Your videos have been a great help to me.
👍 oh, don’t forget to give me a call as my services a very reasonable, and will save you a lot of time and money now and in the future
@@fauxrock What type of glue is "acrylic"? someone told me elmer's glue is acrylic?
I think Elmers glue is a latex what you wouldn’t want to use. Nevertheless, whatever glue you’re gonna purchase you need to find out if it’s 100% acrylic or not you don’t want anything but acrylic as an admixture.
Could you add shredded paper to cement for stability or would that not work. Thanks
Adding paper wouldn’t be a direction that I would go.
@@fauxrockOK Thanks!
Do you prime the cardboard prior to covering with cement finish ?

Here’s a link for the mesh at Home Depot’s. Keep in mind that Lowes also carries a similar product.

I have been a professional landscaper for over 40 years and never seen this before. I have only ever used real rocks . This is very interesting but I would not have the time to do it unfortunately. Very interesting video though
Totally understand…Thanks for the feedback I do appreciate you taking your time to watch my video.
Is there a wooden frame under the cardboard to which the cardboard is screwed?
No wood frame is used… I either use a box or boxes Or I make a frame using cardboard “L” the build my rock
@@fauxrock Thank you.
👍
Great to see the proper safety ppe being taught, by law you must have your safety cigarette hanging from your bottom lip
Oh, that’s the kind of comment I want to see.
What are you screwing into?
All the rocks in this video were first made by assembling random small boxes to make a bigger shape. Then we screwed the cardboard skin to the boxes and to each other sheet of cardboard skin or elder shell
All the rocks in this video were made first by using smaller boxes to make a bigger random shape… we then screwed an outer layer of cardboard to make an outer skin.
Nothing sticks to tape very well. Right?
Yes, that’s true but in this application, we’re not worrying about sticking to the tape with the Cement as the cardboard form is just a one time use to former Cement shell
Why not use what is known as ‘scrim ‘ in the UK ? Essentially it’s open weave hessian or burlap as I believe it’s called in US.
Mesh, burlap, scrim there’s a lot of words that we can use for what we call textile reinforcement.
Just save used carpet from the dump. It FREE and EFFECTIVE.
I have done a lot of work researching, and developing utilizing used carpet… tons of fiber and mesh and it is free. You’re on the right path.
Yes indeed…😊
So that's how the pyramids were built ha ha
That funny… Thanks for watching my video
This is how they pyramids where made
Training newbie to spray glue without mask?
Yes… it’s 100% acrylic that’s diluted down and there are no VCs or fumes coming off of the mixture at all. I always say to each his own if you wanna wear a mask and do so but don’t push your thoughts on me. If I need something I’ll figure it out.
Thanks for your feedback. I appreciate you watching my video.
Does everyone have to wear a cap ?
No, but if you’re in the hot sun is advisable
Is it hollow inside ?
Yes it’s hollow inside.
Why could you not use hot glue would that make a defect
Hot glue can be used to attach each piece of cardboard to another. I just prefer the screws. Thanks for watching my video.
Oh I get that saying dumber than a box of rocks now 😂😂😂
Now that’s funny I never thought of that.👍👌👍
Grinding and no respirator
I’m 62 and don’t care… furthermore, I use common sense and I don’t breathe when the dust is right around me I time my breathing recently I had a lung issue and the doctors looked at my chest through x-rays and suggested never even look like I smoked, or I have been in the concrete industry all my life. You do what’s good for you and I’ll do what’s good for me
We do this kind of stuff for VBS all the time. Smaller scale of course.
That is so awesome, love to see young children being introduced to building artificial rock. Thanks for watching my video.
A good finisher you dont have to grind true story sheet rocker 20 years never touch a sander no more
👍
Those stones have not pass the grandson test. My grandson’s would pulverize those things…
Not so fast… I have had six grandsons and a granddaughter testing these rocks for decades with no problems
Awesome
Thanks so much for the positive feedback and I really appreciate you taking the time to watch my video
well thats very charlie brown. I got a rock.
Well, if you think that’s Charlie Brown, you should see my Christmas tree… Thanks for your feedback. I appreciate you taking your time to watch my video.
zigzag man.
I’m a reformed, zigzag man… Haven’t smoked that crap for 22 years. Thanks for watching my video.
@@fauxrock :) saw the tat
Dude, your rocks might last 100, maybe 200+ years. You need to put a message inside those rocks, inside the box, of a message to the future. If you can find one, maybe a newspaper, or...something, a little piece of history.
Actually, we have made time capsules just like what you’re talking about before where and we put relevant information that was dated so that in the future someone will unveil some history
@@fauxrocka landscape fortune cookie
Is a middle layer with Spray Foam also possible ?
Yes… that is possible along with many other deviations in the mix as well.
I think the rocks look better without the texturing more natural. Love the masks your not wearing 😅
You made two good points… thanks for your feedback. I appreciate you watching my video.
When grinding masonry with a cigarette a face mask is not needed. The cigarette filters out the dust.
That’s what I’m talking about man. Innovation via necessity the mother of all inventions.
Two “feet” tall, not two “foot.”
Oh, the irony: the grammar police officer has used an incomplete sentence.
I stand corrected… Dog, gone it….I knew I should’ve paid attention in those English classes.
they no explain nothing of how to make

@wavesofsound2918 thank you very much. I appreciate you watching my video.
Doesn’t look like a rock to me.
Thanks for your feedback. I appreciate you watching my video.
Why the devil would I want to make a cardboard rock…?
I have enough of rocks as it is.
You can have them for nothing, just come and get them.
When it rains it pours… there’s so many places across the United States that have no rock available to the consumer without purchasing from somebody who’s truck them in. Again, each one of us has different objectives and different solutions to meet those objectives. God bless each one.
Thanks for your feedback and I really appreciate you watching my video
Great! Where are you. My son is trying to make one of these as part of an Eagle Scout project because we can't afford any large rocks around us....
Thanks for the feedback… I really appreciate you watch my video.
A super way to save a parking place. ☺
To much free time, to do absolutely nothing! Sad.
Thanks for your feedback. I appreciate you watching my video.
I think you should be punching the people that made those rubbish cardboard rocks
Oh that’s beautiful!!!!!!!! now I can wrap those with “rock ‘n’ roll” .....( Rock on a roll is a product on the Internet it’s a full rock facing ona roll of rubber mastic) thank you my friend I was using Styrofoam🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
Thanks for your feedback. I appreciate you watching my video.

No masks , smoking, bad show, never heard about safety?

Spray foam to fill in the cracks then smooth it out
That could work…👍
