How To Bunnyhop Up (Full Tutorial!)

- Learn how to bunnyhop up onto obstacles in this video! Every other bunnyhop "how to" video I've seen has talked a lot about the basic technique and how to do it over a bunnyhop bar - so for my video, I wanted to share how I bunnyhop up and onto obstacles.
In this video, I break down the basic technique into three separate parts - the lift, the pop and the flatten. We start by learning it all on flat ground, and then we'll apply our techniques (and confidence) to obstacles of increasing height.
The bunnyhop has all sorts of little nuances to it, and those tweaks can make a massive impact to your riding. I tried to capture as many as possible to include in this video - there should be something for everyone!

I have been failing bunny hops for 2 weeks even with face-to-face coach from a friend who rides a dirt jumper. I could never get the back wheels off the ground even the slightest. Until I found you and your scooping technique, Aaron! Please keep the posting! I'd love to see your freestyle riding too!
Awesome!! I'm so glad to hear that this helped you unlock the technique! Have fun with it - stoked that you're bunnyhopping now!
This is great! Nice work!
Thanks Jeff!! 👊
Bro you explain things really good. Plus your exercises leading up to the bunny hop is genius. There really is no better way out there.
Thanks!! Stoked that you liked it!
This was a great instructional video. It was easy to follow and understand. You covered every detail and gave great tips. If there was an Instructor of the Year Award in the Trials world, you would surely win it.
Thanks Martin!! Thanks also for the assist on the Twitch stream, it’s so helpful to get the input and feedback from our crew!
I missed these full tutorials.
Great work!
Thanks so much!!
Well said very helpful breakdown thanks for making this video!
Thanks for watching, glad that it was helpful!
The row + anti row at 10:27 is exactly the thing we were talking about on stream, that footage came out so well. Great job explaining all of the points!
Thanks Teracis!! How’d I do with the chapters? Should I add any more?
@@SuperRiderTV they seem good. I didn't go over analysing the chapter marks, it was already way past bedtime when I saw the notification this was out. I'm sure there will be more feedback but at first watch these definitely seemed fine to me!
Perfect! Thanks again for the suggestion!
I was happy to hear that you are not telling the folks to get behind the back wheel axle as so many tutorials do. You are not mentioning the manual, which is good for the same reason. If you get behind the rear axle you won't have time to get the back wheel over the obstacle. I like the plane analogy! :)
Thanks so much!! Doing my best to be helpful with these tutorials. :)
Great vid!
Thank you! 🙏
Dudeeee 10:40 every time I teach someone how to bunny hop I start by telling them to do this off the bike, and they always look at me like “that’s silly, of course I can do that!” But then it takes them a minute to figure it out, and when they go back to the bike… boom, bunny hops!
Right?! Amazing how you can progress so quickly without even having your feet on the pedals! 🙌
Brilliant tutorial . I can bunny Hop but this helps a lot with higher hops, lunges... dont attempt if your not fit. I got a muscle tear in my shoulder rotator :)
Awesome, thanks so much!! Glad to hear that it’s helpful!
Thank you I am going to get a hex figure it will make things easier although I can’t do much from watching your videos I realise I have a lot of the basic elements already I just need to practice and start putting stuff together
I’m 57 never to late to learn
Right on! You're in the right place (and in good company!). There is a link to a Discord channel in the description of this video, which takes you to a forum where lots of other riders are learning and sharing information about riding. highly recommended!
Shiet just bought Inspired Element off of marketplace because of you. I had a brief exposure to trial when I was a teenager but coming back to is now at 38 will be interesting.
That’s awesome!! Hopefully all the tutorials here on the channel are helpful - let me know if you need help with anything!
🔥
Such a dynamic move with a lot of subtleties, and you explained it well 👍
Thanks so much!! 🙏🙏
Mate! Your explanation Is so good! I just got back into trials, I used to be able to jump onto a picnic table. I'm struggling with much smaller stuff. I think your stuff will help x
Thanks so much!! Stoked that you found the channel, I hope all the playlists full of trials tutorials are helpful!

Bunny hop onto something. Exactly what I wanted as a beginner bunny hopper. Thanks a lot. When I do it, I figure it has to be a pretty quick and explosive move (Phase 1 through 3). But I also see some riders seem to do it slower and relaxed way. How come the difference ?
Some riders come in with a little extra speed or take off earlier - that gives them the extra time to pop. That’s the only scenario I can think of where you’d get away with a slower movement. If you snap the movement faster, you could also hold the flatten phase longer - that’s how you’d execute a hop over a Bunnyhop bar.
Great content.🤟 Anyway to demo on an FS E-mtb? I find my lighter analogue MTB a little easier than my heavier E-mtb to hop. I'm sure my technique suffers...probably "muscling it". 💪
Thanks so much! I made an ebike video a little while ago, so much fun to ride - although some stuff (like Bunnyhops) took a lot more effort to get the job done!
@@SuperRiderTV I couldn't find your E-mtb bunny hop vid on your channel. But check out this Brit. ua-cam.com/video/fyK58Alxv14/v-deo.html. Interesting comparison between analog v. Light E-mtb v. Heavy E-mtb. Plus flats v. clipless.🍻
Do you have any tips or suggestions for the bar pull to hips? This seems to be the crux of the move and the thing most beginners struggle with.
This video has a segment around going UP - which should dramatically help that specific movement. Check it out! ua-cam.com/video/r5gfcBqbELQ/v-deo.html
Hello, does bike weight matter when doing bunny hops . I'm using a heavy hardtail mtb.
It can definitely make it easier, but you should be able to apply the basics of the technique to any bike.
@@SuperRiderTV Wait how does it make it easier. What is the difference between heavy and light mtb's, also heavy full suspension mtb's.
Scup is a mith my friend.
Please explain more why
@@1975normal There is a video on YT that explains this perfectly
i dont have a trials bike is it possible to use a bmx with a brake
Definitely!
It feels like your explanation is skipping something between phase 1 and 2. In phase 1, you said you lift the front wheel, as if you're going for a manual, about thigh high. In phase two, you're pushing the bike up diagonally to give the pop. But as I observe your movements on the bike, in between these two moves, you're standing up and pulling the handlebars all the way towards you (and raising the front wheel much higher at that moment) before pushing them up. That's actually the part I'm particularly struggling with. It feels like it takes a lot of core strength to be able to go from that low position on the initial wheel lift all the way up to standing with the bars against your thighs. Hopefully I will get it with practice. You make it look so easy, it's frustrating! 🙂 Thanks for the tutorial.
Berm Peak calls this the "meerkat" position. The bike is acting like a lever to launch off the rear tire. Your bodyweight on the bottom bracket is the fulcrum. Since the Earth doesn't move (significantly 😅), the entire bike system is propelled upwards. Technique: After preloading and rocking back to get the front wheel up, you just perform a motion similar to a deadlift to bring the bar to your hips. You can practice this slowly until you get comfortable with the height. It feels very unnatural at first like you're going to fall. If your weight is too far back you will loop out. Just hop off the back. Make sure your seat is all the way down. Once you perfect this meerkat maneuver, all you have to do is perform it faster and the back wheel will come off the ground without any additional effort. At this point you push forward and scoop the rear to level the bike and raise the rear wheel even more. The rear wheel only go as high as you can get the front - more or less.
@@RobbyNowell Seth's video is the one that made me realize the importance of the meerkat position. Takes some practice, but I'm getting there slowly...
I have really hard time to bunny hop on pure trial 20"
Same, it feels like bunnyhopping a road bike. The older 20” bikes used to have higher rise stems and you could go so high on them. Now with the longer front end, it’s a bit of a mission!
Also - is that Green Bay, WI? I’m originally from Waupaca!
Yes! Green Bay, WI I'm Rodrigo on the USA Trial Rider Group !
Awesome!! At some point, I definitely want to get back for some Wisconsin riding!
