Great vid.....read this if u plan to do this job. My car is a 05 base. Everything u see in this vid is correct but just note as another poster mentioned there is a bolt on the very bottom underneath the car to release the radiator support frame in addition to the top 4 that u remove. U also have to remove the AC line bracket that is attached to this frame. A few other unexpected things popped up...while pulling out my manifold I found it was still tethered to a wire harness underneath right side....u need to release that green clip. On the left side underneath u will see a couple electrical connections and a light grey hose.....this hose will prevent u from removing the manifold.....I removed the bolt holding the device this hose was attached to so I could just remove the manifold and flip it up on the engine. Other then that the top far left manifold bolt was tricky....I used a wobble socket to remove that one so I didnt strip it. Allow a few hours for this job. Good luck
in-case anyone is wondering the knock sensor needs a 27mm socket, which doesnt come in most tool sets. other then that little piece of info this video is pretty informative and i wish it was out when i changed mine. outstanding work.
thank you for this video! just did a starter on my buddies 03, tried like hell to get it from underneath until i broke down and took the intake off. cheers buddy people like me rely on people like you
Video was excellent. I watched a few times and thanks to you I did my rsx's starter in less than 2 hours. Went flawlessly! Used to work at a garage so I have some experience but never did a starter.
I'm leaving a comment because I have a type s and this video can't help me after the intro bit. I'm saying thank you for pointing it out early in the video. Saved me time. I made sure to like and sub 😀
Just replaced the starter on my base DC5 and wanted to add something - if the top radiator support does not move back even after removing the top bolts, there is another small one under the car to remove, somewhere in the middle. This was not shown here and I wasted some time figuring it out. Easy job otherwise, cheers
Hey man i changed my starter and it doesn't sound right when the car begins. Including that i got an engine light, can you recommend me where you bought you starter?
@1:09 cannot get this bolt OFF! Soaked it with PB blaster for few days still wont loosen. not sure what to do now since I tried few times and now bolt head is rounded. anyone have any tips.
It had an intermittant no crank/no start after being driven for a while. Starter was failing from heat soak. Testing done during the failure indicated that the starter was receiving power when the key was turned to start but wasn't responding.
Do the intake manifold or TB gaskets need to be replaced when you do this? What about the Intake manifold bolts? A DIY thread on ClubRsx said as much but I'm not sure....
I usually replace any gaskets I remove, paper and metal ones especially need to be replaced once removed. Rubber gaskets however can usually be reused if they're in good shape, though I usually like to replace those as well on older vehicles.
Hey man. If you could provide a couple things before I jump on this can you provide torque specs on the manifold to the engine and the throttlebody to manifold. I assume 20 foot pounds for both of them. Thanks!
There is a connector on the passenger side of the manifold that I don't see disconnected in this video and I pulled the wires out of mine. I am not sure what order the wires go back in and cant seem to find a close up. Its connected to that round part on the manifold. Does anyone know what I am talking about??
paul neafie Are you talking about the solenoid that controls the vacuum actuator? If so it should just be two wires. If it's just a standard solenoid then it shouldn't matter which way the wires go.
hey thanks for the video. it was great but after installing the new starter I am hearing a weird noise at startup I am also getting a reading code retaining to the knock sensor could this be the problem
Solid video you did a great job thank you. However one question. I seen the starter being replaced but didn't see the knock sensor being replaced? Could you tell me what time in the video you're doing it by chance? Sorry not really a car guy lol.
If yours has never been replaced and you've got the intake off anyway, you might as well. They always go bad on the RSX, mine went at 150K miles. And they only cost like $15ish.
@@daveclark8337 I know the video is old, but a generic knock sensor is about $20. The real Honda Brand, which you should get, since this job is a pita, and dont want to do again, Im diong my sensor now, A Honda brand one Ebay is $95. An Acura stealership, said $216 for the sensor! Um, Phuck off!
Go for OEM! It would cost a lil bit but it will last for a long while!

Paolo Inigo .. oem isnt worth it for a 15 year old rsx.. oem starter will run u anywhere from 4-600$.. meanwhile, a quality remanufactured starter with a 2-3 year warranty will only set u back $130-200
Nice vid. Did you get a p1077 code upon reinstall? Vaccum hoses seem correct, I cant believe my rotary valve went bad just because I removed the intake.
P1077 is IMRC stuck shut. Sounds like you forgot to unplug the electrical connector to the IMRC valve when removing the manifold... damaged the connector or the wiring.
I've been having a problem with my Rsx, it's idles rough for 10 seconds then dies. I've tried new spark plugs, new fuel pump, new fuel injectors, new fuel pump relay and lastly i tried this new o2 primary sensor. Still same problem, and when i check with obdII reader its gives me codes like, Primary o2 sensor heater malfunction, the o2 sensor shows 0 volts wtf? The secondary o2 sensor is showing voltage but the primary isn't. I don't know what wrong and I love my Rsx you can only imagine how much it sucks not being able to drive my car for the past 3 months because of this problem. Any ideas?
David Xavier Same happened with mine,it was my idle air control valve, I just replaced my whole throttle body and it runs like a charm. Got the throttle body off another rsx from a scrapyard for $70
Don't throw parts at it. Oxygen sensors will not function until they're up to temperature so not getting a reading when cold is normal. An O2 heater circuit malfunction is not dependant on the temperature, so that's something to look into. O2 sensor issues will not cause problems when cold and the computer can run the car decently without the O2 sensors so that shouldn't be causing a problem. Sounds like a wiring issue or PCM issue.
This is a great vid except in my case there wasn't enough clearance to remove the intake manifold without removing the radiator mounting bracket, also a bunch of crap underneath holding it in place. I am not a violent person but I would punch the dude at honda that designed this atm if I had the chance.
See 4:52 into the video. It’s pretty simple, unplug it, wrench it out, wrench new one in, plug it in. 27mm socket. (It is not attached to the starter.)
Your video skills and ability to cut to the chase without a bunch of preamble are great! Excellent video!
+Andy Young Thanks, I like to get right to the point.

Solid video. Adding "base" to the title would be incredibly helpful for searching.

I just yanked it pretty hard, it moved. I really didn't wanna get underneath the car.

Great video , I found out that I needed a new starter after installing a new alternator, using this video to help out
Ty for the video. Base model here doing full rebuild and overhaul before winter. Have a good holiday man
thank you for posting this. It was very helpful. Just had to change a starter motor on an 04 RSX
Same, in a few days
best video yet, showing your process on removing your starter helped SO MUCH. thanks!
I was just getting to that point of whether I have to move the radiator support. Thanks.
Best video for the base model out here . Nice job 👏
Thank you for this. I just bought an intake gasket so I would be prepared for the knock sensor job. Did not know I would have to replace. Thank you!!!
did you need the intake manifold gasket?
Dave Anderson no, it is reusable.
thank you for such a good view on it. no one else did it this good
Great stuff need to change my starter and friends telling me it's a pain in the backside
Not on the base it isn't
Great video very helpful
Awesome 👏. I don’t think I saw you remove the sensor because it was going fast but great job.
It's a pretty good video. It's a lot of labor but makes it easy at least. You can also get it from the bottom though.
Thanks ever so much for this video. Mine has starter grind, but what symptom did the knock sensor show when it was faulty?
I think it was just a code.
did you have to replace any gaskets for the intake assembly?
No, this gasket is reusable.
So is no gasket required? Removing my intake manifold and I didn't have one either on the base model?
There's no gasket that needs to be replaced for the upper intake manifold? also if not too much of a pain, what tools were used?
I asked a Honda mechanic about this, they reuse the gasket, this particular gasket does not need replaced.
Gonna probably need an extractor but at this rate my guess is that bolt is gonna break.
Just wondering what tools i will need it looks pretty simple to do.
Just basic metric sockets and a decent assortment of extensions.
did it make a clicking spoilling sound when you tried to start it? did it not start at all or sometimes it would start?
It had an intermittant no crank/no start after being driven for a while. Starter was failing from heat soak. Testing done during the failure indicated that the starter was receiving power when the key was turned to start but wasn't responding.
I have a 04 rsx base but im unable to move the upper radiator support, it doesnt budge, anything im missing?
might be rusted
There might be another bolt at the bottom under the car mate, there was on mine.
that ground on the passenger side what is it connected to mine is only plugged on the ground
I have a type s model. In what way the removal of the starter is much harder?
I don't believe so, but the Manifold is 1 piece so you have to remove the injectors and fuel rails with it.
its harder on the type s
Jesus Christ . Have you replace the starter on the s type? or you let the ASE mechanic do so.
Do the intake manifold or TB gaskets need to be replaced when you do this? What about the Intake manifold bolts? A DIY thread on ClubRsx said as much but I'm not sure....

what is the torque on the knock sensor?
According to the RSX manual that I have it is "3.2 kgf-m, 23 lbf-ft".
hey thanks for the video. it was great but after installing the new starter I am hearing a weird noise at startup I am also getting a reading code retaining to the knock sensor could this be the problem
You may have knocked the knock sensor plug loose. There's lots of things that can make weird noises on a car.
Solid video you did a great job thank you. However one question. I seen the starter being replaced but didn't see the knock sensor being replaced? Could you tell me what time in the video you're doing it by chance? Sorry not really a car guy lol.

Where did you get the starter at?
So would a type s starter be able to fit in a base model rsx?
I have a base model and am looking to replace starter and have found what seems to be a type s starter for a lower price

Yes it will fit with no issues
What are the torque specs in the intake manifold

How long ou think it would take me to replace just the starter?

shouldn't be more than 2 hours tops.
I did it in 30mins without taking the intake manifold off. You can take the starter off going under the car. much easier.

how much was the knock sensor and where can i find one Pfun41?

can this video apply to 2005 rsx type-s ?

what size socket for knock sensor plz?
