World's biggest cruise ship is Symphony of the Seas with a height of 72.5 m (238 ft), that's quite a bit lower than the Eiffel Tower which is 300 m (984 ft).
Water survival in the military teaches if you have long pants on! Pull them off, and ties the ends of the legs together... then place the tied legs over behind your head hold the waist and scoop air into the pants. it will fill up like two balloons, hold the waist together with air in it and stay afloat. you can do this all day. :) Mich Lee USMC
I was in the Sea Cadets in Canada when a boy, and we wore traditional navy garb including those big baggy bellbottom pants. I was told back then about how their design was made to be tied as you describe and used as a floatation device.
Falling off a cruise ship from the top deck, you would experience something similar to those people who jumped off the rising stern of the Titanic. It was even worse for them, because not only was the water -2 degrees celsius, they were wearing the cork life vests typical of those days, and upon hitting the water, the cork would immediately rise up, and hit the person's chin which such force that it broke their neck.
Why is no one talking talking the fact that you will likely be eaten alive by predatory fish? If you're floating out there for hours, it wont be long before the sharks show up.
Only if you are near the shoreline; distance varies upon the amount of land nutrients that are spilling into the sea from rivers & streams entering the larger body of water thus providing for a complex food web.; that draws the sharks and other predators not the open seas.
I'd survive, I guess, as long as I stay floating on the water. Then, I'd either wait in the ocean for help to arrive or swim to the nearest piece of land.
This randomly popped up on my recommended and it’s crazy because being in the middle of the ocean, deep dark water and drowning is one of my biggest fears.
You can tread water. The salt content in the ocean actually make it harder for you to sink and easier for you to float. So if you can't swim, you can float on your back or tread water with minimal effort.
"If you're still nervous, you are as likely to catch the flu or cold than fall off a cruise ship." I literally get sick every year, those are terrible odds.
One thing to take into consideration, what about the propellers? Most big boats can drag stuff close to them, that’s part of the reason why Olympic had that crash with that smaller boat, those propellers might pull you in....dangerous!
just last week here in Jamaica a cruise ship kicked off a couple, because the female was standing on a railing just to take some pictures for Instagram.
Another tip when cruising and Man-over-Board happens If, you see the victim just point at him always and don't look any where else. Also consider carrying a small water proof Flashing Light at night if you survived the fall, it will save your life ocean is pitch black and blinking light can be seen for miles and your chances of rescue just went up big time.
I’d be so terrified; especially at night. I’d probably die from panic attack before drowning. Just imagine it’s pitch black and your into huge black water with all types of sea monsters dwelling under your feet. Sharks, whales, sting rays, and all those other wired sea creatures; just the thought of that gives me anxiety. I couldn’t do it.
"Can be taller than the Eiffel tower" okay hardly... the Eiffel Tower is 300 m (not even all the way to the tip), while the largest cruise ship is 72m tall
Okay I’m going to correct something. The actual reason you shouldn’t try to swim after the ship is because an average cruise ship’s cruising speed is about 35 miles per hour. It’s a human impossibility to catch up to a cruise ship at cruising speed. Not to mention there’s ABSOLUTELY NO WAY BACK ON if you do happen to catch up
I'm a sailor and we once spotted someone floating in the water (alive). We kept following the person and then lost him when a ship sailed to close to us. Honestly the wprst experienxe of my life. It was my responsebility to watch him and I felt terrible. Luckily they found him alive two hours later.
I would suggest from cruise crew to provide like a watch or bracelet or necklace with alarming button to all passengers to wear it all the time while in cruise for any emergency circumstances. By implementing this for sure will save life even inside the cruise.
1) Hit the ship while falling 2) bad weather 3) Get pulled in by propellers However, if you fall and survive landing in the water without any misfortunes. Wear any water proof material clothing preferably pants so that you can make a temporary float with it. Chances are you can stay afloat longer.
So if it is dark and middle of the night and nobody sees you falling off that cruise ship, there is no chance to survive at all. 10-15% is quite little

Just a little correction: I work on a Cruise ship by myself. Lifebuoys are mainly not in use to keep overboarded people over water, but to have a obvious mark in the water. Because a yellow or orange ring is much easier to spot than a head over water. That it helps to stay over water is (only) the second function :)
