I would and did choose the Spyder RS. Like anything, you need to practice a little with the top to know what you are doing. What an amazing car, and the sound is so unique. It's just music that speaks to my soul. I live in the north country, so when we had a warm night in late October, I decided to take advantage. Minutes into my drive, I decided topless is the way to go. At approx. 11pm in pitch black, I pulled over, dropped, and stowed the top. The stars, the countryside that intake, every breath she took as I went through the gears. Wow, what an experience! Thank you, Porsche!🥰
I think this car is really meant to be topless when driven. You almost get the sense the Porsche engineers made the roof that complicated to discourage putting it back up. The sounds are sublime, thank you for sharing mate, enjoy that beauty for the rest of us!
You talked A little bit about the sound, but undersold the nirvana noises the intakes make. They are off the charts good. Nothing comes close, at any price point IMHO. Good video, I agree, and thus why I spent WAY over my normal car budget to make sure I got one of these. Those complaining about the roof don’t “get” the car, and that’s fine. More cars for those of us that do. Best Porsche outside a carrera gt, and it’s not even close.
I was really hoping to get to drive it and show the intake noises, and that was the original plan. Unfortunately, last minute while filming taking the car off the lot was taken off the table. But when I did ride in it, the intake was INSANE
@ The intake sound is so good that, it is my ring tone, and I constantly watch spyder rs videos just to hear the intake, when I’m not driving the car. lol Is that nuts?
Yes that is 100% nuts, but equally understandable. I have been on a bit of a mission trying to watch as many 981 GTS exhaust sound videos as I can find. The gurgling that they do when you release the throttle is intoxicating
This may not be a popular comment but here goes: IMO cars with 500+ HP and modern performance capabilities on the street make no sense. I know - I’ve owned a 911 turbo, a gt3 and now a gt3 RS. They are too fast not just to avoid tickets (radar detectors will help there ) but frankly even in quiet country roads there are animals and possible cyclists etc that are endangered by the speeds these cars are capable of. I find my cars are boring when driving anywhere near speed limits on the street- eg GT3 engines really don’t sound great until reaching 6000+ rpm and in all but the first 2 gears you’re driving too fast So: I bring my RS to the track and enjoy its hyper performance and the sound And I bought a top spec mazda mx5 with a rag top for the street- which is far more fun to drive than the hyper cars - manual , super light, good sound with an exhaust and feels like double the speed without having the risk of a ticket or endangering anyone Just my personal experience but take it for what it’s worth…
I think what you are saying is spot on. To enjoy a lot of these cars, properly enjoy them, you will be at speeds that are unreasonable for public roads. Both in the sense of danger with hazards, and also the anxiety factor of getting a ticket or worse. To some people, they are unbothered, but I can't help but brake at every intersection from fear of a police officer lurking. (Not that I ever break the speed limit of course). High performance cars need to perform at a high level or they are boring. A GT3 at 80mph feels like a regular car at 30 mph. It just isn't what it was made for, it doesn't get properly exciting until you get to speeds that will land you in prison, and for people like myself, it just isn't worth the risk. That being said, your Mazda MX5 is to you what my Porsche Boxster is to me. It isn't fast, and it isn't going to turn heads. But on the public roads, I can use more of it because it isn't as fast. I would rather drive a slow car quickly, than a fast car slowly, and I think that is what you are saying (correct me if I am wrong). Whether people agree or disagree is up to them, but I have the same perspective.
@ I’m in agreement with your comment re the boxter- but the spyder RS is essentially a gt3 boxter - far too fast and far too capable (handling etc) for the street to legally or safely enjoy
I'll take the GT4RS or regular Spyder. That roof is wack (you can't even lock it), you can get the regular Spyder in a manual if you want topless, and it can go top speed with roof up or down (125 isn't fast enough) ... I say this as someone who has declined a Spyder RS allocation on 3 separate occasions.
I had both , manual 718 Spyder for plus 3 years and now 6 months with the RS. Night and day, engine response, power, sound, steering etc etc. The roof when you get practice it takes me 1/2 min plus than regular Spyder but it worth it a lot. Adding the roof on looks so much better and still you can enjoy exhaust and intake sound
Yeah I get it. I drive too fast for it. I regularly exceed 125 and it's downright dangerous in a convertible. I also have a 718 Spyder, a GT4RS, and a manual 992 GT3, so it seems redundant to add this one. I also live in a state where it gets 5 feet of rain a year.
It is a tough sell going from a Spyder to the RS. The RS is faster, but to me personally, I would get a normal Spyder. It is a shame they don't make them anymore, but the things that make the RS enjoyable, I would say the Spyder can do just as well. It might be 'slower' technically, but both cars are already way overkill for any public road. In my opinion, I'd stick with the Spyder especially with the manual
The spyder is definitely better for the road because of the more road compliant spring rates, I just find that having to manually install the roof is a bit outdated
It is your car, if people don't like it, they can close their eyes. Ducktail's are such a subtle, but easy way to make a car look timeless. At least in my mind.
Mazda mx5 is the most popular sports car in the world for good reason. More fun!!! And it just keeps getting better and better. Oh, and much cheaper too…
The top ruined it for me. When I’m out and about, I make multiple stops and in many places, I’m not going to leave the top down. I bought a C8 Z06 HTC instead. I’ve never regretted my decision.
Great video! A dream car for sure.
I still want you to review and drive my 987.2 Spyder!
I would love to! We should try and schedule it sometime before the weather gets crazy hot again!
You nailed it
The next careers gt
We might be reviewing the original Carrera GT soon now that you mention it....
I would and did choose the Spyder RS.

Spyder is the best Porsche right now, IMO.
Agreed!

It is overkill, undeniably.

Good arguments for either point honestly. Thanks for commenting gents!
My spyder and like $120k+tax to trade for the RS, I just can't see that ! Also, I would probably miss the manual trans, my first car with one.

The manual roof on the regular Spyder is doable, but yea, this Spyder RS roof is unreasonable at best
If I had unlimited money, my ultimate 3 car Porsche garage is this (SRS) + 911 S/T + Sport Classic (I’d rank those 2, 1, 3 respectively)
I am a sucker for the Sport Classic...
@ I love the duck tail, so much so that I’m thinking about putting it on my S/T, as sacrilegious as that sounds
It is your car, if people don't like it, they can close their eyes. Ducktail's are such a subtle, but easy way to make a car look timeless. At least in my mind.
@@carcaveofficial truth! But as I’m trying to start a Porsche centered YT channel, I do care what people think 😅
I subscribed to you mate!

Quite a lot cheaper yes....

The C8 Z06 is an INSANE car. I should do a video of one.....
