"At the end of the very last scene, Meryl Streep, believing that the scene had ended, asked Dustin Hoffman if her eye make-up was messed up from crying. The director kept it in the movie." I love this
This doesn't sound plausible. Why would she think that when the elevator door did not close, and also, we see his face when he answers. Meaning, there is a camera shooting directly at his face when he answers the last question. If that was spontaneous... the last scene wouldn't be so perfectly shot from both sides. And also, according to the storyline, it is perfectly logical that a mother who is going to talk to a son for the last time (in a long while) doesn't want to look like she has been crying seconds ago.
The point is precisely that people have to go through those experiences to have those epiphanies. If she hadn't fought for the child she wouldn't have painted his room and wouldn't have realized the clouds-downtown-home thing.
they do, you're too unappreciative and too clingy on nostalgia. In about 20-30 years, when you're gone, and today's films have scenes, some other salty nostalgic guy (probably me) is gonna come around and say "they just don't make films as good as this anymore."
Did you know that the movie was supposed to end with the line "...I'll wait down here". After that, the elevator doors were supposed to close and the movie would end. After the final line was said, Meryl thought that the camera stopped rolling and tried to pull herself together after such an intense scene. It wasn't Joanna who asked Ted how her hair looks. It was Meryl asking Dustin.
It's a beautiful ending in that he doesn't get his son taken away from him, that what's best for Billy is fulfilled, and that Ted and Joanna regain respect for each other as people and are able to part as friends. It's an ending that points to a beautiful new beginning for everybody.
Wonderful film, 2 wonderful people who belonged together, just misguided but both compassionate. My guess they would be back together if the film continued, one way to share a child :-) I think they both learned their lesson. Love both actors. They are both wonderful and the kid was nominated for Oscar :-) The last scene was my favorite... beautiful and touching.
Let's campaign and ask the academy awards to have Meryl and Dustin present the Best Picture Oscar this year for the 40th Anniversary of Kramer versus Kramer winning Best Picture!!!
You see the face of Dustin at 1:16? That fantastic emotion he shows? It reminds me of Death of a salesman when Malkovich kisses him. You gotta love this wonderful actor.
Loved this movie, Hoffman deserved his Oscar. Did Streep get one for this (can't remember)? No special effects, no nudity (well, a teeny bit); no violence--just human drama and emotions. Why can't Hollywood turn out movies like this anymore? Well, I guess they can, but why WON'T they?
Streep won one of her three Oscars for this film. Won again for "Sophie' Choice" and then for "The Iron Lady" in which she played Margaret Thatcher. She's also won five Golden Globes, four SAGS, and countless other awards. She's the most honored and awarded actor/actress in the history of film.
In an interview of Dustin Hoffman ("Meryl Streep, making of K vs K" on YT), he merely says that it was not part of the script, not that she thought the scene was over. By the way that's also the case of the scene where he shatters the glass in the bar, which I find rather clever of him.
Apparently, nobody seems to be interested these days in making movies(or TV shows, for that matter) that appeal to the better parts of the human character.
Very well said, just nails what Hollywood is all about these days. There still are superb movies, but you have to go out looking for them like a needle in a haystack.
The quality could be a lot better. BUT if you watch this scene in high-def you'll see that Meryl is actually crying buckets. BUT you won't see Hoffman ever shed one tear in this movie. Not even when the situation really calls for it. That's not an accident. The "greatest actor of his generation" can't cry like a human being because of his lineage.
That means that she wants nothing except the WELFARE of their son! How will her son understand her when she left them? And most of all, her son knows nobody closer, except his father?! This is the most heart rending situation in the movie, which made me weep thinking that the movie was based on a true story!
You got to appreciate the acting of that Wonderful little boy..Billy ..... I had little wonder how it beat 'Apocalypse Now".After watched the movie I think I have no wonders. It's perfect!
+Steve Mattos Wait a minute, selfish? Both times, she was doing what she thought was best for Billy. Selfish would have been to take the kid from his home to make herself feel better. What the fuck are you smoking?
BULLSHIT. In the beginning, she left to find herself and in the end, after causing endless amounts of trauma to Billy, she realizes she was only using custody as a weapon and decides she'd rather be free anyway. She's an evil, selfish bitch coming and going.
+Steve Mattos When she left, she was talking about suicide and how she wasn't good with Billy anymore. When the hell did she say she just wanted to be free? When she was crying her eyes out about not taking her kid with her? You're using petty hatred here, not your head.
I'm certainly not using any petty hatred. This is a movie character, not someone I know. I DO, however, think this character is a selfish shithead. She specifically says she needs to go find herself. By definition, that is motivated in pure self interest. You simply can't deny that. That's not for Billy. That's for her. Anything else is an attempt to justify her guilt for what she knows is wrong but what she's too selfish to not do. She then returns after almost a year and a half, unannounced, and demands that Billy be with her. She rakes Ted over the coals in court with her lawyer forcing him to appear to be a bad father, and then when she gets what she claims she wants, she quits on Billy AGAIN. You're defending a total piece of crap for no discernible reason.
its not made up, watch dustin hoffman's interview in "Inside the Actors Studio" where he mentions it. She whipped the mascara that was dripping off and asked him how she looked after the scene to which he replied "terrific" and the director liked it and said thats the way they will end the movie and so decided to include it, but it was a retake.
That 's a harsh assessment. Are you saying that by backing away at the end she weakened all th emotional growth that had occured to her? I think it's quite the opposite. She's proven a lot to herself by this point, but if someone wanted to argue that her wanting her son back bordered on selfish (she had every right to want him back) being that she abandoned him, what she's doing now if the least selfish thing she could possibly do because she knows it's best for the child
@court485 That's close to the truth. According to Hoffman, the scene was over, and the bit about "how do I look" was real and not scripted. But the director saw him say it to her and said "Say that in the film!" so they re-did it and added the part in.
i was there when this scene was shot, meryl thought her makeup was messed up due to the crying etc so she was asking how she looked but the director kept it in
It probably was an accident the first time then because they realized that it would work well in that scene they re-shot the scene with a scripted version.
They've been into that for a very long time, even when this movie was coming out...Hollywood still makes good movies, we just have to find them in the heap of escapism that you're talking about.
I miss the rawness and investment Meryl once had in her performances. She earned her Oscar for this, as well as for Sophie's Choice. It is a shame she's overcooked and barely invested now.
+outinsider I would think it's a natural tendency as people grow older to become less invested and more comfortable. Let's also remember that her boyfriend had just died and she wasn't a very well known actress before those 2 movies came out. She had the right ingredients to go along with her talent to pull off some spectacular performances, especially in Sophie's Choice.
+UltraRockSounds I don't know about that. Katharine Hepburn and Bette Davis were doing better work at her current age than Meryl is doing now. And they had less opportunities Meryl now has for great roles given the power structure of Hollywood. I think in the time and place of Kramer vs. Kramer, it allowed for her to prove something. Acting is constantly proving character to audience. The audience of 1979 versus today's is less cultured in the hows and whys. Meryl is a celebrity because nowadays people don't know the difference between an artist and a celebrity.
I think this film would have ended better if Ted and Joanna actually reunited as a couple and they finally fix their broken marriage with Ted now treating her better than he did before they broke up and finally letting her have a life of her own. Something tells me the director originally wanted that but it was probably decided to end the film like this instead
@wlhardy Well, they WON'T, because years of market research has shown that real plot lines and real drama are too much for the broadest possible audience. When the budget comes down, the guys at the top only give a green light to the things they think are going to sell the MOST tickets. That's why Hanna Montana has a singing career for example, because although its not real music, 10 year olds who don't need real music are the biggest CD and merch buying audience.
@matrix49A this isn't about old movies (which proves my point, being that back then, it was not as easy to pirate movies the way we do today). this is about whats happening to movies today. Im not a fan of Ben Stiller, but it has nothing to do with his being Jewish. You are just too ingrained in your anti -semitism to see truth beyond your prejudices.
"At the end of the very last scene, Meryl Streep, believing that the scene had ended, asked Dustin Hoffman if her eye make-up was messed up from crying. The director kept it in the movie." I love this
But the doors hadn't closed yet? Why would she believe the scene ended?
This doesn't sound plausible. Why would she think that when the elevator door did not close, and also, we see his face when he answers. Meaning, there is a camera shooting directly at his face when he answers the last question. If that was spontaneous... the last scene wouldn't be so perfectly shot from both sides. And also, according to the storyline, it is perfectly logical that a mother who is going to talk to a son for the last time (in a long while) doesn't want to look like she has been crying seconds ago.
Could you not have had this epiphany before we both shelled out thousands on lawyers?!
Yeap, but the movie would be like 20 minutes long. ;-)
terry fuckwitt c
The point is precisely that people have to go through those experiences to have those epiphanies. If she hadn't fought for the child she wouldn't have painted his room and wouldn't have realized the clouds-downtown-home thing.
It wasn't until the trial that they truly began to understand each other.
They just don't make films as good as this anymore.
they do, you're too unappreciative and too clingy on nostalgia. In about 20-30 years, when you're gone, and today's films have scenes, some other salty nostalgic guy (probably me) is gonna come around and say "they just don't make films as good as this anymore."
Hoffman and Streep, talk about a dream team. This is the best screen acting I've ever seen in my life.
Meryl was pregnant with her son Henry in this scene. (sorry random piece of info)
Interesting!I had no idea. She must have been in the first months because she's thin and it doesn't show at all.
ok
Huh?
Thanks 😊. Nice to know 👍
No! He was already living with Dustin Hoffman
Did you know that the movie was supposed to end with the line "...I'll wait down here". After that, the elevator doors were supposed to close and the movie would end. And the thing is dustin still said terrific

This is one of those movies that broke me. Such a gorgeous film.
Thank you Dustin and Thank you Meryl.
Very strong movie, cried at the ending.
Fabulous scene. Both actors are just so brilliant.
i got choked up when she told him ''i'm not taking him with me''.
Meryl and Dustin are wonderful actors, together is the Top! Unforgettable Movie.
Wonderful film, 2 wonderful people who belonged together, just misguided but both compassionate. my all time fav drama movie. i cried a lot in the climax

Gracias al cine, a la producción, a estos grandes actores por ésta gran escena 🫂
I-remember-seeing-this-in-the-theater-and-after-it-ended,-this-scene,-the-entire-audience-groaned-with-dissapoitment..they-hoped-the-two-would-get-back-together..
Why is your entire comment hyphenated...??
Because the computer I was using when I posted it, the space bar was broken
+Jyll Jill Fair enough..
I hope audiences were taught something about life and movies after that.
Jyll Jill fair enough
You see the face of Dustin at 1:16? That fantastic emotion he shows? It reminds me of Death of a salesman when Malkovich kisses him. You gotta love this wonderful actor.
+trha2222 The fuck outa here with that stupidity, please.
You made me laugh.
Cada vez que la veo siento la misma emoción, gran escena, gran película, grandes actores, gran final!!!!

This ending was certainly better than most real-life divorces.
Agreed. On weekends my cousin had to pick up his kids on the porch. His ex wife wouldn’t let him go into the house.

That's kind of what I miss about TV and movies theses days
Dustin Hoffman and Meryl Streep, one's of the best actors of all time
"i love him very much ..."tears
Mr Focker and that CEO from The Devil Wears Prada
Miranda preiesely..her name from devil wears prada
shes still beautiful
Meryl and Dustin were amazing
makes me cry
God is that scene overwhelming.
i used to watch this movie weekly when i was little
I think its nice, that she decided not to take Billy away from his father.
@bobanddavid90 both Dustin hoffman & Meryl Streep won oscars for this film. the awards were well deserved
still the best movie ever!
Very well said, just nails what Hollywood is all about these days. There still are superb movies, but you have to go out looking for them like a needle in a haystack.
I own this movie. I love it! Made me cry.💚
Meryl, my word what a beauty.
wrote a paper for my film class on this movie! got an A
One of my all time favorite movies 👌

love this movie.
I just cant understand who they hide her belly she was about 7 and a half Months of pregnancy in the end of the movie
i was there when this scene was shot, meryl thought her makeup was messed up due to the crying etc so she was asking how she looked but the director kept it in
This movie is outstanding.
Cate M. Very good movie
incommesurable
did he said that she looks terrific at the ending?
That’s so sad btw I was 2 when u made this video ! I’m 12 now
Even though the credits aren't included in this video, do you know the name of the first song played in the credits?
They make this kind of movies all the time. You just can't be bothered to look them up.
I'm fairly certain Streep won a Best Supporting for this film.
@court485 but why was she asking how she looked when she thought the scene was over? Did IMDB explain that, also?
It's still sole custody in Japan. I can't see my child for 5 years..
WTF.......
If she loved him then why did she leave? Smh.
Yeah. What a GREAT mother..... Fucking feminism destroyed the minds of so many women like this.
@ calisongbird because the space bar on my laptop was broken when I posted this about a year ago.
It probably was an accident the first time then because they realized that it would work well in that scene they re-shot the scene with a scripted version.
@Mafia07407 and that rumbling background noise also, that's all the same, in any movie with 'action'
They've been into that for a very long time, even when this movie was coming out...Hollywood still makes good movies, we just have to find them in the heap of escapism that you're talking about.
@Mafia07407 your so right.i totally agree.
I miss those days when Meryl actually worked for her reward, rather than be rewarded for working still.
@Mafia07407 Am I the only person who loves the irony of such a statement being made by a guy with the handle "MAFIA07407"?
In the real world.. Mum gets the child and takes the child.
すごい演技力だなぁ。
Hermoso!
1.43-1.51 it's a continuing scene. doesn't look like it was an accident at all. unless of course, they reshot it.
I miss the rawness and investment Meryl once had in her performances. She earned her Oscar for this, as well as for Sophie's Choice. It is a shame she's overcooked and barely invested now.

Good point.
the end leaves it for the audience to have their own interpretations.....joanna and teddy probably got back together

True story - Kate Jackson was first offered this role, but due to her Charlie's Angels contract, had to pass on it!
Meryl will you marry me?
@Mafia07407 Great comment, male or female - well said!
That doesn't make any sense. Why cut to a reaction shot of Dustin saying you look terrific if the scene was over? Meryl not notice that camera change?
selfish are selfish.. they'd take anything you throw at them
Why did she leave him in the first place?
@wlhardy Well, they WON'T, because years of market research has shown that real plot lines and real drama are too much for the broadest possible audience.
