  • This track was sent into me by a viewer of the channel and I thought I'd give it a whirl. Normally you can find me watching some Irish rap so J-Pop is a bit left field for the channel. Let me know what you think in the comments and remember, if you're off to Wetherspoons tonight, don't forget to take your Samurai.

There are 2 things no one ever expects:
    1. The Spanish Inquisition
    2. What Babymetal will do next (other than joyfully blow your mind).

Welcome to BABYMETAL! They are simply awesome in all ways. Their live performances are some of the best you will ever see, particularly anything in Japan.
    Enjoy! 🤟🏻🤟🏻

Welcome to Babymetal! These gals have been dominating since 2010 when they were kids. One of the best live bands out there, they've played Wembley, Leeds, Reading, Sonisphere, Glastonbury, and many many major arenas/shows around the world, and appeared on stage with Rob Halford himself, done collabs with Dragonforce, and them Sheffield boys (Bring Me the Horizon). UK is definitely their 2nd home haha.
    Suggestions:
*Ijime, Dame, Zettai (Sonisphere UK 2014):* 3 adorable asian girls in their mid-teens run a confused crowd of 50K+ UK metal heads. Epic lol.
*Metali (Official Live):* One of their newer singles, now in their mid-20s. Features Tom Morello of Rage Against the Machine. Fun and energetic festival song.
    🤘🦊

The “I was not expecting this” and “WTF did I just watch” are the typical reactions among first-time BABYMETAL viewers. A lot of their songs tend to get that - even after watching a number of them! Anyway . . . .
You’ve opened a can of worms!
BABYMETAL has an extensive history (and lore) which I won’t get into but a quick synopsis: they’ve been around since 2010, and started when their lead singer - known as Su-metal (Suzuka Nakamoto) - was about twelve, and the two "cheerleaders" (officially "scream and dance" (backing vocals)) - Moametal (Moa Kikuchi) and Yuimetal (Yui Mizuno) - were both around eleven. Unfortunately, Yui left the group in 2018 because of health concerns, and early in 2023 Momoko Okazaki (Momometal) was named a member of the group. They do not play instruments but are backed by the Kami Band - session musicians who are among the best that Japan (and the U.S.) has to offer.
BABYMETAL started a brand new genre of music ("kawaii metal" - cute metal), and they cannot be pigeon-holed - they are almost always thinking and moving outside box; they made listening to metal FUN! They have, to date, four studio albums, and have been on a number of world tours. It is common knowledge among their devoted fans (known as "The One") that BABYMETAL is best served live, but they do have several music videos that are real works of art. I suggest you go back to the beginning, and react to their first two music videos, "Doki Doki Morning" and "Iine!" (pronounced "E-nay"), both released in 2012. You’ll notice those are the first two on this list of these recommended songs (along with suggested versions):
Doki Doki Morning (official music video)
    Iine! (official MV)
Gimme Chocolate!! (official MV or Legend 1997 Apocalypse version)
    Megitsune (official MV)
BABYMETAL Death (Legend 1997 Apocalypse version) [for those who are religiously sensitive, see the Budokan Black Night 2014 version]
Onedari Daisakusen (Legend 1997 Apocalypse version)
Song 4 No Uta (Budokan Black Night 2014 version)
Uki Uki * Midnight (Budokan Black Night 2014 version)
Catch Me If You Can (Budokan Black Night 2014 version)
Ijime, Dame, Zettai (Live at Sonisphere 2014 version)
    Headbangeeeeerrrrr!!!!! (Legend 1997 Apocalypse version)
Road of Resistance (Legend 2015 New Year Fox Festival version)
    Karate (official MV)
Meta Taro (Five Fox Festival version)
    GJ! (Fox Festival 2017 version)
Sis Anger (Fox Festival 2017 version)
    Shanti Shanti Shanti (official MV)
    Pa Pa Ya!! (official MV)
    BxMxC (official MV)
    Metalizm (official MV)
    Metali!! (official MV)
I would include the links but, for some reason, UA-cam sometimes thinks I'm posting spam and will delete my comment. For the links, see the UA-cam playlist “BABYMETAL Top Twenty”; it is a mix of MV’s and live performances, is more or less in historical sequence, and could be considered a road map down the BABYMETAL foxhole. If nothing else, it can be used as a reference to find high quality versions of BABYMETAL songs without mucking about - if they are on the list. Anyway . . . .
Another recommendation (read "challenge"): react to an entire BABYMETAL concert. I suggest "Legend 1997 Apocalypse" and/or "Budokan Black Night" (2014). There are playlists for both on the HEAD123456 UA-cam channel. Both concerts are, in a word, incredible.
Enjoy your trip down the foxhole! (You're in for a wild ride!!!)
Keep rockin' BABYMETAL!!! (Sorry about the wall!)
    KITSUNE UP!!! 🤘🦊🤘

Welcome to the Foxhole and BabyMetal's journey 🦊🤘🔥
Glad to see you got this recommendation from your subs, you're about to get in a wild journey and probably you don't wanna miss the chance to see them live like many reactors already did with the World Tour 2023/2024 and more is coming this year such Download Festival. Last weekend they played at Sick New World in Las Vegas and before that they were in San Francisco as part of the Babyklok Tour along with Dethklok.
BabyMetal is a Japanese metal dance unit created in 2010 under another Jpop/Jrock group called Sakura Gakuin, they had 11 and 12 years old when started this and become independent after 2013, they created their own genre called kawaii-metal mixing Jpop with metal sound and different subgenres along with many more rhythms. Their name is a reference to a new genre and not related to their ages or "baby" faces, is a pun intended play words with "heavy-metal" which sounds similar to "baby-metal".
    They are:
    *SuMetal* lead vocalist, now 26.
*MoaMetal* scream and dance, now 24.
-YuiMetal- scream and dance, former member since 2018.
*MomoMetal* scream and dance, she's 21 and is the new official member since April 1st last year.
    None of them are related.
After 2018 you'll see backup dancers performing along with them but none of them are official members, they don't sing, only dance, but that status change recently like i said.
    About this song:
"Karate" is one of their stronger weapons along with "Road Of Resistance" from 2nd album "Metal Resistance" released in 2016. It's an uplifting song about keep fighting besides the obstacles, and if you take a closer look at the end you'll see in the eyes of their rivals that they're fighting against no other than themselves.
Some fans also find anime vibes on BabyMetal songs, the only other song I could find with anime vibes besides this one and "Divine Attack - Shingeki", is "Syncopation" another banger.
They watched several footage before making this song, one of those were "Karate Kid" old movie, that's why you see MoaMetal catching a bug, that's a reference to the movie, after this she become the bug catcher expert when traveling on live tour lol. The bats and the concrete blocks testing strength is another infamous Karate reference.
Btw just in case, the band playing behind in this MV are hired actors, they got their own set of musicians when performing live called Kami Band, they're not always the same musicians but currently this year they've been playing with a westerners band unlike early era after 2012 when they had a Japanese band.
You can enjoy the live version with the blaster sound of the Kami Band watching Download Festival 2016 among many others but this one is safe to react.
    Next suggestion:
    - Headbanger!! live at Legend 1997 (2013).
I'm gonna leave in my next comment where to get more original clips safe to react if YT allows me to do it.
    See you next time 🦊🤘🔥

Here's the list of live performance clips usually safe to reacts without any filters so you won't need to rely on live compilations, there might be some exceptions:
      - Headbangeeeeerrrrr!!!!! live at Legend 1997, SuMetal 16th Birthday in 2013, they got MV of this and is fun, but live is a blast.
      ua-cam.com/video/LNFiDWJh2FA/v-deo.html
      - Akatsuki, live at Budokan 2014, this is a SuMetal solo.
      ua-cam.com/video/g2372C5PJLM/v-deo.html
      - Megitsune, official MV is my first recommendation but is usually blocked if you don't put filters, so if you want live and safe to react, check it out Budokan 2014.
      ua-cam.com/video/dU38CYkpBvI/v-deo.html
      - Akatsuki Unfinished Version, SuMetal solo again but with only a piano behind special performance at Legend 1997.
      ua-cam.com/video/nwsinmxTxbo/v-deo.html
      - Babymetal Death, live at Legend 1997, this is the big finale, you're gonna blow your mind with this one.
      ua-cam.com/video/jRc9dbgiBPI/v-deo.html
      - Catch Me If You Can with Kami Band intro live at Budokan 2014.
      ua-cam.com/video/ng8U_j0gpLI/v-deo.html
      - Ijime, Dame, Zettai live at Sonisphere Festival 2014, sometimes the official live MV isn't so friendly so you know what to do.
      ua-cam.com/video/Ro-_cbfdrYE/v-deo.html
      - Rondo Of Nightmare, with Mischiefs Of Metal Gods Intro live at Budokan 2014, another SuMetal solo but way different than usual happy songs.
      ua-cam.com/video/8WBDiLMNZcE/v-deo.html
      - Doki Doki Morning, official MV, their very first song and MV full of kawaiiness, usually is safe to react so try it, if you want a live performance, this is the first proshot version with the Kami Band live at Legend 1999 (YuiMetal and MoaMetal 14th birthday).
      ua-cam.com/video/BSjv9OYtWZ0/v-deo.html
      - Uki Uki Midnight, this one is a follow up to Doki Doki Morning but way different sound, this is the PV, is super fun but the sound isn't so great but at least is live.
      ua-cam.com/video/Yj-UQIlqsIQ/v-deo.html
If you want better sound with the Kami Band, then live at Budokan 2014 it is.
      ua-cam.com/video/ESzY9dL613Q/v-deo.html
      - Onedari Daisakusen, live at Legend 1997, this is a Black Babymetal song, is a subgroup with only YuiMetal and MoaMetal.
      ua-cam.com/video/1dT1ywYR5So/v-deo.html
      - Iine! again official MV hits way better but if you want live, here live at Budokan 2014.
      ua-cam.com/video/5sCvYVNeD0w/v-deo.html
      - Karate live at Download Festival 2016, "kitsune6001" got this with a short interview intro.
      ua-cam.com/video/FKOL6v3Md2c/v-deo.html
      - Road Of Resistance live in Japan official live MV, be careful with the blocked by putting some filters just in case.
      ua-cam.com/video/zTEYUFgLveY/v-deo.htmlsi=BsVOSExS25Qndy1H
      - Kimi To Anime Ga Mitai - Answer For Animation With You, live at Budokan 2014, not sure if it's still safe, so try some filters, if is audio blocked try to mute or just cut the parts.
      ua-cam.com/video/M8FKumvh-w8/v-deo.html
Here's a song you can find at Babymetal Reactor Resource (BMRR), a helpful place to get watermarked logo clips of the original live version to curve the annoying algo.
      - GJ! live at Wembley Arena 2016, another Black Babymetal song.
      ua-cam.com/video/Hg0Rylcg8F0/v-deo.html
This is BMRR short vid to follow instructions and get the spreadsheet with the full list.
      ua-cam.com/video/q40VmTHSh4c/v-deo.html
And here's a BM guide (the long one).
      ua-cam.com/video/aIb2xEthdSg/v-deo.htmlsi=EnEYU4nN3tuiY3WL
There's a beginners guide at "Briaghh" called "So... What is BabyMetal?" is more short and with some fair update until last year unlike the other one with full updates till this year.

Good first reaction. You have just discovered Japan's top export, there is no other band quite like BABYMETAL. They pioneered their own new genre mixing Metal with JPop hooks, melodies and aesthetics and they have been going since 2010 when they were aged 12 and 11.
Over 13 years on, numerous world tours under their belts, first Japanese band to headline Wembley Arena, selling out venues wherever they play in the world and filling the Tokyo Dome (55,000 people) two nights running without an opening act when they played there, they are now one of the best (if not the best) live bands on the planet.
'Karate' was the lead single for their second album (2016), so it is one of their more "radio friendly" songs.
You weren't far wrong in your interpretation. It is about fighting adversity, when life knocks you down and everything seems too hard so you're hurt and crying, its about standing up and fighting on, helping each other through the hard times. They used karate to illustrate this because as a Japanese martial art it reflects their culture - as with a lot of their songs it is also about always moving forwards.
In the video the figures in white were the girls all along and they were conjuring up their own inner demons to fight against. They beat the first, the second knocked them down but they got up to eventually defeat themselves (did you notice the reflections of each of the girls in their own eyes when the masks shattered and it was revealed as them? Not many people spot that).
They did watch a lot of martial arts movies to get ideas for the choreo as they wanted it to look as authentic as possible (but they are not martial artists). Moa catching the fly was a nod to Mr Miyagi in The Karate Kid. Mr Miyagi may have used chop sticks (and it may have taken him two or three films before he caught one), Moa caught her fly with her eyes closed - first time.
This song and video won 2 awards. "Best Metal Video in MTV Video Music Awards Japan 2016" and "Best Metal Song in 6th Annual Loudwire Music Awards".
They have about 70 songs now, each one different to the last so expect the unexpected. You already have some great suggestions for more songs. The official videos are all really good, but they are a live performance act - live is where you will see and hear them at their best.

probably the best BABYMETAL song... the guitar riff, the drums, the message in the lyrics (never give up, help each other) , Mikiko's brilliant choreography and that magnificent chorus that still gives me goosebumps even after almost 10 years since they released this song... .the song and video are incredible, modern and powerful... and Su's vocals are at her best

Great first reaction! 🤘🦊🤘 Thank you for giving BABYMETAL a chance!!! BABYMETAL is a Japanese kawaii (cute) metal group (a metal subgenre that they created) that formed in 2010 when the 3 girls were 11-12 years old (yes, they were very young), and since then have performed with, toured with, or opened for Metallica, Korn, Sabaton, Bring Me The Horizon, Dragonforce, Guns N' Roses, Lady Gaga, Rob Halford of Judas Priest (there's a great youtube video of their performance with Rob at a metal award show), and Red Hot Chili Peppers (there is a youtube video of them performing Gimme Chocolate with RHCP, as well as with Korn, and DragonForce), to name a few of many. They have performed at large metal events/concerts in front of 65,000+ skeptical metalheads in Europe (Download, Sonisphere, Glastonbury, etc), US, and Asia. They are the first Japanese band to perform at Wembley arena in the UK. Also, 20+ awards have been given to them. They have 60+ songs and each one is different from the other, so I hope you give the other songs a try. By the way, they have some really great heavy songs too, and I hope you like guitar solos, as well as bass and drum solos, like I do, because they have them too. Also, they released a new amazing album last year and they just finished a world tour where they had many shows here in the US. They also recently released a new music video for their song called "Metali" that features Rage Against The Machine's Tom Morello. 🤘🦊🤘
