This song is based on the real life and death of a popular cheerleader, Kirsten Costas in 1984, she had just turned 16. She went to school at Miramonte High in Orinda CA and was stabbed to death by an acquaintance of hers, Bernadette Protti. Costas was part of the popular in crowed the Protti wanted to be long but was never accepted. The case was made in to a very popular made for TV movie, Death Of A Cheerleader, starring Tori Spelling as Costas and Kellie Martin, as Protti.
Am I the only one that finds significance in the fact that she was pretty and people cared that she was gone? I don't think that people would have felt that way if she were "ugly".
I take your point Smidthmador, but isn't that kinda the whole point of the song, the added irony that a "popular" girl took her life, it's no more poignant or sad that way, just more unexpected.

I agree with penny Joseph. I'm pretty, but have the lowest self esteem and issues with trying to please everyone to get ppl to like me. I've done many, really stupid things. And the loneliness hurts so bad. This was a stupid comment, I know it.. but sincere lol

The people who are all saying ohh it's showing how people care about pretty people.. ya ok partially true probably. At the same time I think we should call attention to the fact that it is showing that just because someone is pretty does not mean their life is easy or that they do not go through hard things like anyone else. If anything when pretty people have problems a lot of people look at them and are just like oh they are pretty they have no reason to be upset.Also...
