You showed the cut down version of the Goldeneye teaser… after he takes his shot, Bond then walks to the camera and out of the shadows. Looking towards the camera Bond says “You were expecting someone else” The Goldeneye teaser is IMO the best trailer for a 007 film to date… and one of the best ever. First saw it at the cinema when I saw Batman Forever in the summer of 95.

It's hard to overstate the impact of that Goldeneye teaser trailer. There was a bit of a feeling in the air that Bond was out if date; Dalton was out, the Berlin wall was down and political correctness was in the air. And then this masterpiece hit the screen like a sledgehammer. It still gets my heart pumping now.

I loved how both the Goldeneye and Tomorrow Never Dies trailers felt very 80s/90s action film-ish. They are shown to the audience to be Bond films a good ways in, as Brosnan is revealed and the familiar music kicks it up a notch. I noticed that the Tomorrow Never Dies teaser shows Brosnan wielding the Walther P99 in place of the PPK. Without the context of the upgrade in weaponry near the end of the film, that probably threw some hardcore fans for a loop when they saw that.

  • @barachiel212

You're not overreacting. I saw Goldeneye in the theatre, and I was perplexed by the huge buildup/reveal of Sean Bean when the trailer told the twist straight up. I'm pretty sure this is one of those cases where the director probably wants to strangle whoever put that trailer together.

The Goldeneye teaser triggers a lot of nostalgia. We used to have a VHS box set of the films up to Goldeneye. Every VHS had the Goldeneye teaser first, followed by the theatrical trailer for whichever film you were watching. Always left you thinking, we should watch Goldeneye after this film.

I wonder if they revealed so much from GoldenEye in the theatrical trailer because of the 6-year gap after Dalton and the mixed reception/performance of Licence to Kill at the time. Oversharing to really make it clear to the audience what the stakes are with another 00 and make it really clear to the audience what they’ll be in for with the new Bond.

The Goldeneye teaser is probably the greatest trailer ever made! Redefining trailers without the voice over as you pointed out. Then how kinetic the editing and music were… if only the film had sounded that good. The reworking of the gun barrel was the icing on the cake.
The entire time, the production had gone to great pains to instil Robbie Coltrane as the villain until MGM decided otherwise. I first watched the theatrical from a cd-rom magazine cover disc and I was gutted, never expecting it to be ruined that much. Martin Campbell vented on it in interviews as well

Which, I don’t get - why is there a trailer for the Ultimate Edition DVDs on the Ultimate Edition DVDs? I bought the thing, why are you trying to sell it to me? I guess they also sold them all separately and wanted to sell the whole boxset to people who just bought one, but still, it felt a bit lazy.
(Also it was painfully apparent with the Bond 50th Anniversary DVD set that they just used the Ultimate Edition DVDs and gave them new labels, because they still had that same UE trailer advertising “All 20 films” in a boxset that contained, err, 22 films).

It's impossible to know when you hire an actor how they are going to react to a role after 3 films, especially if there non-Bond films are not as popular [Connery] or get tired by troubled productions [Craig]. Brosnan was denied the part in Living Daylights in pretty brutal circumstances so relished his second chance and had some success outside Bond at the time [Dante's peak, The Tailor of Panama] so he was kept happy.

According to TV Tropes Brosnan was unhappy with the messy production for TND [apparently describing it as 'like pulling teeth'] and memorably laughed derisively when recalling the 'windsurfing' scene in DAD but these are minor.

The GoldenEye teaser trailer is not just the best Bond trailer, it's one of the best trailers for any movie ever. It had a big job of selling a new Bond, in a new unprecedented time, and that was why not having much dialogue (limiting it to two or three lines from Bond himself, including his famous introduction) and focusing on the action complimented by that INCREDIBLE music was a genius move.

Re the Goldeneye Theatrical Trailer giving away the main twist, trailers would never get away with that now given the online presence that they didn't have back then.
Anyone remember when the Terminator Genisys Theatrical Trailer gave away John Connor being a cyborg and the 'twist villain' and the fans lost their minds and turned on the movie instantly. True it wasn't the best film ever or anything but that killed any momentum going in, and with the Teaser trailer having made it look like the main villain was gonna be the T1000 again, they could have salvaged something from that.......I think that was the final straw for some people re: giving away the main twist in a trailer?
