@@calvindyson P.S. I know you have a HUGE dispassion for "Never Say Never Again", but there is a version of theme sung by Phyllis Hyman which sounds very BEAUTIFUL, but I feel it could have been in a Roger Moore based Bond film and was miraculously unused in Connery's "embarrassing" reprisal to Bond in my honest opinion.
I honestly really love the Sheryl Crow song. In fact... I'd probably say it's my favorite theme song of the series. I love how it reflects the yearning of some Bond girls to want to be close to Bond, but never being let in. In that way, I think it fits the movie very well considering the Mrs. Carver character. That said, I do honestly think KD Lang is magnificent and her song would have been great in the lead too. As for the other songs, I tend to think that even though some of them are really good (Straw's, Swan Lee's, Dionne Warwick's, and Bassey's QoS), none were as great as what were actually used, with the exception of Radiohead's version of Spectre. I absolutely loathe Sam Smith's song. I cannot even watch that movie without thinking the Radiohead song should be the preferred song (that whole movie really is a missed opportunity in my mind though).
Another great upload. Your enthusiasm for the Bond franchise is contagious, and downright inspiring. The Bond movie makers should be paying you to be a key part of their PR team!
@@HamanKarn567 It's also on the official soundtrack, but yes. And if you talk to a particular person at the club, they will tell you that the assassin is very beautiful but "sure can't sing, though".
I think the most memorable thing about Spectre as a movie was the rejected Radiohead song. Completely timeless and beautiful. Bonkers it wasn’t used. Testament to the “try and please everyone” approach of filmmakers these days.
The recent Amazon documentary said Radiohead offered Eon a song which wasn't eligible for the 'best song Oscar' and Eon assumed that was the end of it. Radiohead came back to them a while later with a new song, 'Spectre' but Eon had already commissioned Sam Smith and it was too late which both sides seemed to regret.
She did to the title song for Sean Connery's last film, the infamous 'Sir Billi' which had a bond esq title sequence to match even though it's an [awful] kids movie about a vet!
I'll say it again - Eva Almen did a theme intended for Quantum of Solace. It's called Forever (I Am All Yours). I think had they used it it would've gone from one of the worst to one of the best themes.
I was surprised that you didn’t include Forever - I Am All Yours by Eva Almer from Quantum of Solace. I really think that song should have been the main theme for Quantum. It’s an amazing song and it even uses some clips of dialogue from Casino Royale
I didn't even realise that was Daniel Craig at first during the song. At first I thought it was a secondary singer or something. But then I watched the scene with Bond and Vesper from Casino Royale and remembered Bond's line from that scene.
@@davidjames579 That's why I wish they'd gone with Forever - I Am All Yours by Eva Almér. No one actually says "Quantum of Solace" throughout the film. We obviously hear "Quantum" a lot, but not the full title. At least we would have it during the main titles than not at all. Kind of like how in The Spy Who Loved Me, we don't hear the full title throughout the film, but is in the lyrics for Nobody Does it Better.
@@AndrewChapman I actually think it's better when they don't mention the title in the film (obviously unavoidable with Dr No or Goldfinger). I remember there being an audible mass groan in the cinema when Bond says The World Is Not Enough in TWINE.
@@davidjames579 Yeah. But isn't the title of The World Is Not Enough supposed to be a reference to the Bond family motto from On Her Majesty's Secret Service?
Eva Almer's "Forever - I Am All Yours" for Quantum Of Solace was incredible. Even better than the Bassey song in my opinion. Phyllis Hyman's version of Never Say Never Again was fantastic too.
Supremacy by Muse kicks ass, Spectre by Radiohead is haunting and beautiful.Wonder what artists are being considered for Bond 25 theme since today's mainstream Pop sucks and Rock music is dead.
Glad to see that Straw's World Is Not Enough made the list. The lead singer is currently a teacher in Cornwall and I've had the pleasure of having him as a supply teacher
What? I completely disagree about the singing. Thom Yorke's voice is one of the most beautiful things you could ever listen. The falsetto singing is his signature. The voice just sounds angelical.
Phyllis Hyman did a wonderful song for Never Say Never Again. It is available online. It’s definitely more in line with the EON productions than the McClory unofficial film, but it’s a wonder song.
I've never heard it, didn't get into hitman until they improved the controls for the current triology, but as 47 Ways is one of fave songs I'll have to check out Swan Lee. If nothing else she's got a pretty cool name.
I'm glad everyone else has said all things I wanted to say about Spectre by Radiohead. By far one of my favourite songs and the biggest missed opportunity for a bond song. It is a masterpiece.
I SO LOVE that song. I like No Good About Goodbye by Shirley Bassey, but I really wish they'd gone with Forever I am all yours by Eva Almér instead of Another Way to Die. I hope sometime for a future Bond song, they'll consider Eva Almér as she has an amazing voice.
That was the best of the rejected Quantum of Solace songs. Not only does it fit the opening visuals better, but it also adds context, in a way. Thanks to the song's lyrics, you could easily interpret the prerequisite sexy silhouetted women as Bond being haunted by Vesper's memory.
Even though it's not on this list, I love Forever - I Am All Yours by Eva Almér, another rejected song for Quantum of Solace (which I think you mentioned briefly in your Top 10 Bond songs video). There's a video on UA-cam of her on stage performing the song which was uploaded by her channel. I commented and not only did I get a response, but she pinned my comment, which rarely happens with my comments.
The Pet Shop Boys wrote a Song called "This Must Be The Place I waited Years To Leave". I think the story goes that they heard a rumour that they were going to be asked to write a track for the living daylights so they wrote this song in preparation. The rumour proved to be false but you can find the demo version on youtube which gives you a good idea of what it might have sounded.
I like to think the song's written from Kara's perspective, as she's grown up and being stuck behind the Iron Curtain. With classical music as her one release, she dreams of living in The West, and playing in concerts in places where famous composers did, that she's only heard of. Then Bond comes along, takes her to Vienna, and gives her a taste of freedom. Although how much TPSB knew of the film's story.
I've heard the demo and it's very interesting. Makes you wonder what they could've done had they been picked for a song. It's a shame there could only be room for two, if they'd been willing to cut part of The Pretenders song like they did the A-ha! song, they probably could've found room for The Pet Shop Boys.
@@JCBro-yg8vd I think it fits the mood of the film really well. It definitely isn't going into a Roger Moore film with double-taking pigeons. It does feel like it could have been the theme to a serious or serio-comic film about life behind the Iron Curtain and breaking out, like Letter To Brezhenev. Which adds to the Kara story, as that's treated like she has grown up in a sort of innocence/ignorance, but yearns for the excitement she gets in music, and being able to freely express that in life. Notice her childlike excitement at crossing the border, and when Bond buys her clothes and takes her to the theatre. Does make me wonder how much The Pet Shop Boys knew about the film.
I’ve read that Bill Conti also considered Donna Summer to do the theme of For Your Eyes Only. I would have loved to have heard a Donna Summer Bond song as she’s my favorite singer but Easton’s song and the rejected Blondie song we’re good too!!
Mr Kiss Kiss Bang Bang is used quite a lot in the score throughout Thunderball, for instance in the part where James and Felix are searching for the sunken Vulcan. This is a tip-off that Tom Jones's song was a last minute addition. The same is true of Surrender, in the way it's woven into TDN's score (and Sheryl Crow's song isn't). It can also be said of Only Myself To Blame by the legendary Scott Walker, which plays over the end credits of The World Is Not Enough, and is used in the score throughout the film. Although, in this case I think it would have been too subtle a track to play over the opening credits, it does have a sumptuous atmosphere.
In some of these cases, I dont understtand why they simply wouldn't use two songs; Blondie's song would've worked great as an opener, whereas Sheena's song is the perfect closer.
You would effectively having the songs compete with each other and they probably wanted to focus there efforts on a single artist/song for the titles. It's telling when a second artist was used it's to sing a completely different song [such as the Pretenders involvement with Living Daylights].
They ended up having to do that with Live and Let Die [due to a behind the scenes argument where Paul McCartney wanted to perform his own song while others wanted a female singer so they did both]
I had to laugh when I saw that Ace of Base had done a possible Bond song. At the same time that I was teaching college in graduate school, I also wrote some murder mystery short stories where the sleuth was a fictionalized version of myself. I imagined turning one of them into a TV movie with a Bond-like title sequence, and my "temp music" was by Ace of Base.
About the Julie Roger's You Only Live Twice. It wasn't rejected by the producers, it was rejected by John Barry and Leslie Bricusse themselves, as confirmed in interviews held by Jon Burlingame for his book, 'The Music of James Bond', because they simply knew they could do better. The recording was made in December 1966, quite early on, well before the scoring. Also, I'd dispute that all these are genuinely 'rejected', because for instance in the case of Thunderball and The Man With The Golden Gun, Eon was not in the market for procuring other peoples' songs. I think it's more accurate to call them wannabe Bond songs than rejected Bond songs. My favourite unused, officially procured Bond song is the Dionne Warwick version of Mr Kiss Kiss Bang Bang. I hope one day we get to hear the Johnny Mathis Moonraker.
Thanks for this, Steve! I do agree, to say that they're all rejected is shorthand of me when some of them are more just, as you say, "wannabe" Bond songs.
I know James Bond is predominantly a mainstream pop culture movie series but so many of these rejects seem more interesting to me because of how much more they rocked with an edge. I can tell why most of these were rejected. They were darker, but it would have been nice to have been more aware of these at least.
@@ninjabluefyre3815 the ace of base version would be very fitting if Timothy Dalton came back for Goldeneye. The somber theme of the song would fit as I think it would've been Dalton's last appearance as Bond
@@creativeguy1martinez693 Yeah. The song has that "end of an era" feel to it, which, even without Dalton, fits the existential themes of the movie. The Cold War is over, the Soviet Union fell, and now Bond's relevance is thrown into question. It's perfect. Sure, the demo may sound a bit bare (keep in mind that it's a demo), but the lush orchestration featured in "The Juvenile" really shows how melancholy and dire the song would've sounded had it been fully implemented.
Wow! I really like some of these more than the actual one in the movie Thanks for bringing this to my attention Calvin, I wouldn't have known otherwise 👍
I think they made the right call with the You Only Live Twice but I would say that if Bond had visited a lounge bar or club where there was a live singer performing (as happened in Live and Let Die), then this alternative version may well have fitted in very nicely it that situation, possibly better than the official song.
As a lifetime Bond fan who also witnessed how big Ace of Base were in the early 90s... learning about their rejected Goldeneye theme was a big piece of news for me! Also, Julie Rogers' song is indeed very Bondy, but it sounded too much like a Shirley Bassey song. Great list sir. Thank you very much for putting it together!
I personally LOVED the alternate Tomorrow Never Dies theme and the fact that it was still ingrained in the movie makes me wish we had that... honestly have to agree with most of these, while they did sound great (with a couple exceptions of course) I can't see most of them as the theme for their respective movies.... except Tomorrow Never Dies
I love your stuff but I disagree with a couple of things here. Firstly I think Cooper's song was WAY better than Lulu's was. I love it because it has a hard rock vibe to it; it was what the series needed then. LALD was a great way for the series to adopt a then modern musical style instead of the ballads the producers loved (As much as I loved Armstrong's song in OHMSS they needed to change it up to appeal to more people.) Sadly I think Saltzman and Broccoli just didn't get Alice's appeal when it came down to it. Yes the end's goofy I agree there but the song's fun and menacing enough to make Lee's baddie more interesting by having it in. I can only imagine what kind of music Berry coulda made to the score if he had Alice's song as his base to use. Sadly they went with Lulu and the bad sexual puns and we got stuck with ballads for over 10 years.. some good ones in there yes but there shoulda been more variety. I agree about Blondie; they woulda been perfect for that movie because Call Me was one of the top songs of 1980 and they woulda had a hit on their hands. The song as it was though is typical cliched Blondie though for better and worse. It needed more work; you can tell it was in it's early state. I think it woulda got there and been amazing. Here's an odd pick but I really loved Phyllis Hyman's rejected ballad for Never Say Never Again. What a mistake it was to pick the Lani Hall song; it's so, so bad compared to that one. Phyllis had a beautiful voice and I loved the instrumental of it. Reminds me a bit of the theme to Flashdance but slowed down. WB went with Michael Legrand's bad version with Hall, they even threatened to sue if they went with Hyman's song, very childish on their part. Someone made a fake opening credits sequence with this song and it worked like an official song. It's the closest a non-Bond will ever get to an official sounding theme tune but sadly they screwed it up. Cannot stand Ace of Base so to hear it's their fault they lost the Goldeneye song is hilarious. Tina's song was way better. I also think they made the right call with Sinatra too, that other song is kinda gimmicky despite the girl having a good voice. As much as I love Garbage I think the other WINE song worked just as well but Garbage deserved it. They were bigger then and making good music plus the music video they made for the song was genius. Glad you did this video though; all these songs deserve some love.
I liked Ace of Base's reworked version "The Juvenile", but they had the backing of a full orchestra and had rewritten the lyrics so it may not be fair to compare it to their finished demo "The Goldeneye". Still would love to have their reworked song put into the end credits, it's a much better song than "The Power of Our Love" which is really bland and boring.
I actually really liked the rejected Spectre theme song by Secret Sound Machine featuring Maiya Sykes. If you haven't heard that one I highly recommend it. It's a lot more upbeat.
Nobody kill me but my favorite Bond theme is Tomorrow Never Dies by Sheryl Crow. I like how the bombastic opening softens into the noir sounding guitar, the whole song just sounds like the theme to an action spy thriller. Then there's the lyrics, traditionally there are two Bond Girls a film, one who dies and the one he's in bed with by the end. If you listen to the lyrics of Tomorrow Never Dies it sounds like its sung from the perspective of the Bond Girl who didn't make it. "Darling i'm killed i'm in a puddle on the floor waiting for you to return". She fell in love with Bond he got what he needed from her and she paid the price for playing with fire, such a good song.
Does anyone know if the Swan Lee version of Tomorrow never dies was a contender or was it just a coincidence? I only know about it cos it was in the end credits to Hitman: Blood Money.
Maybe I'm looking at this through 2021 eyes but the idea that a pop group (Ace of Base) didn't want the reject song in the film cuz it would hurt their image is probably a dumb decision especially considering how popular Goldeneye is
I do wonder if that's actually true given for years it was reported that Radiohead's 'Spectre' theme was 'rejected' by Eon disliking it when they actually liked the song but they'd already hired Sam Smith and it was too late.
Thanks for putting this back up Calvin. Would you consider doing a vid about how each James Bond actor represented their respective era's ideals in masculinity? Thanks
2:03 David Arnold said the song was only just started when Jack White was hired for the Quantum song and completed after the film was out so it couldn't possibly have been considered as it pretty much didn't exist [and was written for an album Arnold was working on with Bassey where John Barry +Don Black contributed to] But given he'd just worked on the Quantum score the film probably was still on his mind when he worked on it and that bled over.
The Julie Rogers version of YOLT sounds too Shirley Bassey to me (I've never heard of her before). I never knew there was an early version of the song that was actually performed, same with the others. You cannot replace Nancy Sinatra's version, it not only encapsulates the Japanese theme well, but is beautiful and haunting in tone, probably one of the least cheesiest Bond songs to date.
Uhhh 1 and 2 are perfect. Amazing, amazing songs! I find myself listening to them way more than the final versions. I have many fond memories of Surrender from that secret Tomorrow Never Dies video game ending. 😂 Also, I completely echo what you say about Bassey's Kiss Kiss Bang Bang potentially becoming an iconic Bond track. Whenever I watch the film, I can never resist putting on the commentary so I can hear it over the titles. It's a massive shame it wasn't used. Both of them sound like a perfect Bond song, I actually commend you for managing to decide on a final ranking!
Yeah, no offense to Shirley but Kiss Kiss Bang Bang was not a song that was in her range and it's a shame she got so petty when she in fact was not the original consulted artist for "Goldfinger". She should've been more sympathetic to having another artist be brought in to redo a song like she had.
@@JCBro-yg8vd Yeah Anthony Newley first sang Goldfinger. His demo's on YT. It's pretty good, although it doesn't compare to Bassey's. I agree, Dionne Warwick's ver of Kiss, Kiss is better. She's got more vocal power on it. Bassey's is more coquettish, but it doesn't work as well.

I'll always prefer Tina Turner's version of Goldeneye, but got to say - that really would have suited if Dalton stayed on for a few more films. I've seen one guy on UA-cam pair it with an edited version of the title sequence - looks and sounds lovely!
It's quite well known now Dalton was supposed to do a third film but as he didn't want to commit to any more he amicably left. He only saw a very early draft of the script [which apparently didn't have the EMP or Trevelyan in it] so if he had done the film it probably would have been very different to the Brosnan film.
Alice Cooper's song (without "The" at the beginning of the title) was never commissioned, so technically it was never rejected. In the liner notes of his "Life and Crimes" compilation album, he wrote that it was done on spec hoping the producers would use it.

I'd really like to use it in a story.
@@calvindyson Is there a reason why you're not in sync at 3:00?
We are of opposite ends here, it's my bottom song :/
I went to a Sheryl Crow concert in London in 2005 and she sang Tomorrow Never Dies. It sounds amazing live!
Another great upload. Your enthusiasm for the Bond franchise is contagious, and downright inspiring. The Bond movie makers should be paying you to be a key part of their PR team!

There was a rejected Tomorrow Never Dies that ended up in the game Hitman: Blood Money.
That's the song that assassin in heaven and hell club sang?

I think the most memorable thing about Spectre as a movie was the rejected Radiohead song. Completely timeless and beautiful. Bonkers it wasn’t used. Testament to the “try and please everyone” approach of filmmakers these days.
Hi I Recommend a Bond song Called 'The Bond Villain' by Robert Nix

Yeah it's epic, with a great early Shirley Bassey esque vocal. It also manages to get Quantum Of Solace into the lyrics!
And metal is just not gonna be picked for stylistic reasons
@@notproductiveproductions3504You they're gonna pick whoever’s popular at the time who wants to try for an Oscar.
I love Swan Lee's Tomorrow Never Dies, I'm so glad it got picked up for Hitman: Blood Money cause I never would've heard it otherwise
Yes! Been excited for this
Hope you enjoy!
What about, "Forever I am all yours"?
The Beach Boys recorded an instrumental theme to be used as a Bond song. They put it on their album Pet Sounds as the title track.
Completely agree on the #1 spot, Surrender should have been chosen at the main song for Tomorrow Never Dies.
Here's one you might like (from a non EON Bond movie)!
*Never Say Never Again - Phyllis Hyman*
The *saddest 007 song* there is, I think.
God Sam Smith is the most whiney person in the world. Radiohead doing Nobody Does It Better is awesome.
I don't remember Radiohead doing Nobody Does It Better but fair enough
I'm still really gutted that 'No Good About Goodbye' was rejected...
Yeah likewise!
Yes ! I'm positively shocking about your recent uploading speed and quality , it's just Keeps on improving ! Good job man , keep up the good work
Very grateful to hear that! Thanks so much :)
I kind of wonder if Prince ever submitted a song for a bond film?
I don't think so, he probably would've had his own set of demands and he probably would've wanted to exclusively do the score.
He woulda been like “MGM should write a movie for my song, not the other way round”
Aaa, glad this got re-uploaded. Damn YT copyright. Great video as usual! I've never heard of most of these on the list so this was a good watch!
My all time favorite rejected theme is the Never day Never Again theme with Phyllis Hyman. So beautiful, and has an interesting backstory.
Not seen it mentioned here, but what's your opinion on Eva Almer's Forever (I Am All Yours)
Johnny Cash and Pulp almost did a bond theme? Wow
That Goldeneye song is bloody odd....a lot of these songs are odd. Really odd.
I really like the Ace of Base one.
Hope UA-cam doesn't takes this down again.
I think I should be okay, the full version is going up on my Facebook page
Wow! I really like some of these more than the actual one in the movie
Thanks for bringing this to my attention Calvin, I wouldn't have known otherwise 👍
Thank you very much for putting it together!
i love this video...and i am so happy you mentioned k.d. lang...her song should have been the title song...no question...good on ya' calvin....
You have a delightful way of putting your view across. I like this!
Hey Calvin, when are we gonna get a revamped Live and Let Die review?? No rush, just wondering.
I've noticed the old one is no longer available. Hopefully, he'll do the revamped one in a not too distant future.
The NSNA song was the one that came to my mind, too.
Heh Awww you just haven’t seen the sign yet!
I kinda prefer Forever I am all yours to Bassey’s one for QOS. I do love Surrender though. Easily my fav.
So do I.
CosmicThunder it's not my favourite but it's pretty underrated. "Martini's, girls and guns" sums bond up so well.
@@jai3476 Totally agreed! 😁
One final thought: How about a Top 10 of covers of Bond Theme Songs?
Does anyone know if the Swan Lee version of Tomorrow never dies was a contender or was it just a coincidence? I only know about it cos it was in the end credits to Hitman: Blood Money.
What about Forever I Am All Yours?
I love that too.
Altho Seven Nations Army by The White Stripes weren't a contender, it's still written for a bond movie. It deserves a spot!
Maybe I'm looking at this through 2021 eyes but the idea that a pop group (Ace of Base) didn't want the reject song in the film cuz it would hurt their image is probably a dumb decision especially considering how popular Goldeneye is
Well there had been no 007 movie for 7 years at the time
I do wonder if that's actually true given for years it was reported that Radiohead's 'Spectre' theme was 'rejected' by Eon disliking it when they actually liked the song but they'd already hired Sam Smith and it was too late.
I thought Goldfrapp's Lovely Head was the new Bond film theme when I heard it on the radio in the 2000s. It would have been a good one.
Thanks for putting this back up Calvin. Would you consider doing a vid about how each James Bond actor represented their respective era's ideals in masculinity? Thanks
Hi Calvin can your next video please be a re ranking of the bond films?
It's deffo coming :D
Calvin - Bond Reviewer ok thanks Calvin it's just I really want to see if your opinions have changed.
You should have mentioned 'Pet Sounds' which started out as 'Run James Run' and written for a Bond film.
I love Straw's version of The World Is Not Enough. Does anyone know where one can download a copy of this song?
Uhhh 1 and 2 are perfect. Amazing, amazing songs! I find myself listening to them way more than the final versions. I have many fond memories of Surrender from that secret Tomorrow Never Dies video game ending. 😂
Also, I completely echo what you say about Bassey's Kiss Kiss Bang Bang potentially becoming an iconic Bond track. Whenever I watch the film, I can never resist putting on the commentary so I can hear it over the titles. It's a massive shame it wasn't used. Both of them sound like a perfect Bond song, I actually commend you for managing to decide on a final ranking!
Muse actually did make a Bond song called "Supremacy".
Dionne Warwick's version of Mr. Kiss Kiss Bang Bang is far better. Bassey couldn't even sing the word Bang properly.

Never knew how much I wanted Calvin to star in a Bond musical until now.
I don't suppose there's ANY chance we could hear some of the music that's being talked over?

Alice Cooper's song (without "The" at the beginning of the title) was never commissioned, so technically it was never rejected. In the liner notes of his "Life and Crimes" compilation album, he wrote that it was done on spec hoping the producers would use it.
