Lateralus (/ˌlætəˈræləs/)[2] is the third studio album by American rock band Tool. It was released on May 15, 2001, through Volcano Entertainment. The album was recorded at Cello Studios in Hollywood and The Hook, Big Empty Space, and The Lodge, in North Hollywood, between October 2000 and January 2001. David Bottrill, who had produced the band's two previous releases Ænima and Salival, produced the album along with the band, and became the last Tool album produced by Bottrill to date. On August 23, 2005, Lateralus was released as a limited edition two-picture-disc vinyl LP in a holographic gatefold package

The transition from Parabol to Parabola is epic.
Maybe even beyond epic.
Disposition into Reflection isn't too shabby, either.
Still gives me goosebumps every time I hear it.

I do the same but with TOOL in general. When I get certain episodes happening, I drown my brain with their music and white knuckle the ride to see another day.
If this isn’t one of the greatest albums of all time……..I don’t know what is. What a fucking masterpiece. TOOL 4 life baby!
yeah bra like i thought linkin park was innovative. but this is beyond.

Saw them on this tour. Serious performance. Hardest, rocking trippiest show I ever saw. I was stone cold, sober too. I remember that. You don’t need drugs at the show. Maybe at home with the record I wouldn’t know.
I love all Tool's album in their own different way but I think Lateralus is their best! 🤘🔥
As each album comes out, it becomes my favorite. I actually avoided listening to the new one until I had heard them play songs from it live and when it came out on vinyl.
the tears run down my face , this leaves me speechless....

First time listening to Tool. This stuff is amazing. I don't know why I never even tried listening to them. Don't know why they fly so under the radar. I'm glad I'm finally giving them a chance.
Welcome to the army.
I know right. I've been a fan since Sober was released....still don't understand how humans can't like Tool
Wait until you read the lyrics
You deserve it! Indulge and enjoy. And don’t forget, pain is an illusion!
Tool is simultaneously a decently popular band and also completely hidden in most circles. I think the main reason they get ignored so hard is the stigma given to them of being "pretentious" (for example see pitchforks review of lateralus) which has always confused me because those who call them pretentious often just vaguely point to the instrumental which if you call an instrumental pretentious you can find excuses for literally every song ever made to be pretentious, it's so wierdly anti artistic expression.
This is my favorite album of theirs. I actually appreciate it more, now, as an older version of myself. Wisdom comes from above.
Wisdom comes from everywhere
How about now, as an even older version of yourself?
above ? as in above you... in artistic endeavour ? exact ...right you are...we should take what the involved have to offer... like food from a helping hand. cheers
Best percussion driven album ever
Danny Carey was enlightened for sure
My favorite heavy/metal/progressive/thinking album ever. Its quality is up there with Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, King Crimson, and David Bowie. It's friggin timeless!!! Been a fan for nearly 20 years and have all their albums. This one pulls me back the most. It's a rubix cube that cannot be solved.
Shit, with the exception of Floyd, they have achieved an artist/musical level far and above the others you mentioned.
its what solves our rubix cube... ;)
its rubik you have to solved for yourself, and if you´re done, you have to solve it again.... and again....
and so on :)
David Bowie's half brother Terry Burns ended his life at the train station at the end of my road in the mid 80's. Patient at Cane Hill.

It's more like evolution, listening to Tool. You discover your inner rocker that is bored silly with formula rock and the "Oooh baby, baby" genres. Grow and discover yourself and your inner sophistication with these guys. You could do a lot worse.
Tool can make a 20 minute song sound like 5 minutes

7:00 - 7:25 Not Maynard's longest scream, but when I hear the Grudge, it gets me every time. I gave it a try. NOT EASY.
And thank you, who provided this content AD FREE!!❤ You have no idea how frustrating the algorithm is, or perhaps you do. Good looking out!! Respect.
PS- This work deserves the respect of being experienced using above average over-the-ear headphones. The heavier, the better. You won't regret it.
the scream on ticks & leeches after it goes soft for a couple minutes is def honorable mention
It's certainly his most impressive and powerful scream. Which song has a longer scream?
I've got in ear heavy bass ones. Amazing still. Tool is so fuckin badass.

I know the pieces fit
'Cause I watched them fall away
Mildewed and smouldering
Fundamental differing
Pure intention juxtaposed
Will set two lovers' souls in motion
Disintegrating as it goes
Testing our communication
The light that fueled our fire then
Has burned a hole between us so
We cannot seem to reach an end
Crippling our communication
I know the pieces fit
'Cause I watched them tumble down
No fault, none to blame
It doesn't mean I don't desire
To point the finger, blame the other
Watch the temple topple over
To bring the pieces back together
Rediscover communication
The poetry that comes from
The squaring off between
And the circling is worth it
Finding beauty in the dissonance
There was a time that the pieces fit
But I watched them fall away
Mildewed and smouldering
Strangled by our coveting
I've done the math enough to know
The dangers of our second guessing
Doomed to crumble unless we grow
And strengthen our communication
Cold silence has
A tendency to
Atrophy any
Sense of compassion
Between supposed lovers
Between supposed lovers
I know the pieces fit
I know the pieces fit
I know the pieces fit
I know the pieces fit
I know the pieces fit
I know the pieces fit
I know the pieces fit
And I know the pieces fit

58 years old. Live in Manistee, Michigan (20 minutes north of Scottville, Mi., coincidentally, where I believe Keenan lived for a time). I dont know that I'd qualify as being a member of the Tool Army, but am certainly a fan...have the 5 studio albums...bought each upon its release beginning with Undertow in 1993. I'm commenting here because I just watched what I'd call a "skit" on Facebook, in which an actor portraying Tool's tour manager assembled the band (who remain off camera) to explain the "plan" for their 2024 tour dates. His speech was pure parody, of course, but he (paraphrasing) told the band that it would not play any songs that people actually like, that Keenan would announce, in a condescending manner, that cell phones would be allowed in hand only during the last song and even then under a strict mandate to have no light/flash on...under the threat of a consequence which will include some type of physical/emotional humiliation, and so on. I know the band dislikes phones out during performances, and have seen video of Keenan disparaging an audience member for having it in hand (to which I say GOOD! Not everything one experiences in life requires recording...but I realize I'm older and perhaps l'm just being cranky). Anyway, this question is for you whom identify as "army" level followers of the band. Is there really an issue regarding the setlist...that it dosnt incude enough "hits?" Again, I consider myself a casual Tool fan, but I've not found a single song in their catalogue that I'd consider a throwaway, or just filler...my point being that if Im ever fortunate enough to see them perorm live, I'd be satified with any setlist. In fact, there are so-called deep cuts that I prefer over some of the "hits." Is this similar to the Tool Army position, or are you hearing grumblings from those members? Just curious...as it seems from any live videos Ive watched of the band the audiences havent yet displayed any frustration over certain songs not having been perormed.
Saw them last November and didn’t have a single complaint about the set list. I’m really into TOOL and have been for decades. Not quite as old as you but have followed them since Undertow. I understand some people want to hear certain songs off their older Albums. I would love to hear them as well but I’m honestly happy with what we got in Boston. I bought my ticket with the hope of hearing ænema and they closed for the night with it. I walked away extremely happy. Honestly if you look at the tours after a recent release it’s always been the same. They’re heavy on the last album and I think a lot of the complaints come from the recent tours being FI heavy. If I were you I’d definitely try and hit the next shoe closest to you. They’re on fire right now and who knows how much longer they’ll be doing full tours.
TYVM!
Tool the GOAT
It doesn't matter if you absolutely Love Tool, or Hate them
As a musician of 45 years
This is absolutely one of the most ASTONISHING albums that any rock band has EVER recorded in the history of recorded music.
Like I said, despite your feelings on the band, this album is an unprecedented MASTER WORK that I really feel no one is ever going to be able to replicate let alone do better than.
The Audio Engineering trickery is even 20 years later having me go "How the Hell did they do that?"
They must have protooled the hell out of Maynards backup vocals to get them to reverse while simultaneously merging into the transitions.
A SHIT TON of editing work that is mind boggling
Completely agree. Thank you. 🙏
Thanks
I'm stuck on the first 2 tracks
The Grudge and The Patient

❤❤❤❤❤🎉
Aenima started my spiritual journey and this one kicked my ass into discovering who we are and we are all one🤙🏼🙏🏼
I always feel like Tool has very masculine sounding style. I know that MANY ladies enjoy it but it was always a mystery for me :D
Is it only me? Yeah, it's probably just me.
Maynard is a man afterall
To me it doesn't. I think Tool sounds open, inclusive, all-encompassing. As if whoever listens to it will hear it in the way they need to at the time.
Gracias Tool por ayudarme a trabajar
I was locked up for 3 days and this album was all I had going in my head
I listen to trance almost exclusively but giving this a shot and it bangs
I love ads in the middle of songs.
thanks for upload
Thank you for this.
Reflection on psychedelics is so amazing.
Definitely feel like God speaks to me through this band
That's the voice of M.J.K. my brother.... May he be praised...

Thank you!! 🤘🏻🎤🎸🥁✌🏼😊
Why ist this so brutally honest good music? It is. No explanation. Its ripped of hearts, smashed at your face and you gant resist. Allover emotional...with geometric precision. As if a psychotherapist has written it to awake you from deep slumber. I have chicken skin all time hearing it. Its washing all away. Katharsis. Pain. Love. Loneliness. Hope. Its all there. But how can that be? Well... the universe is too,and noone can explain. Its human condition in musical notes...just that!🤷🏼♂️❤😊🎉🧘🏼♂️
I know how the tool fans are so I just wanted to drop by and let you guys know how much I enjoy listening to tool when I’ve burned out K-pop and need to change things up for a week

Ascension in music 🎶
This album kept me alive when i was ready to die in Nevada. It taught me how to sing along with AIC's dirt.
Jamming out
This is a Buddha mantra with a bad ass drum solo 🤤
#1 album of all time
don't think their later albums surpassed this.
