Why Put Three Motors on a Tiny Boat?

- What are the advantages and downsides to having three motors on ANY boat? Some are obvious. And others might surprise you. I learned quite a bit outfitting this vessel and I just had to share it with you.
You can watch the building of this little triple motor boat here:

With 3 motors sharing the load you should be able to increase the pitch of the propellers without overloading the engines and get more top speed. Though that doesn't seem to be the entire point of this build. Love your videos!
This is why I came to the comments.
This is what I came to say also.
Don't have a lot of boat knowledge but aren't you limited by max hull speed?
@@JB-hp6up Not once the hull the hull is on a plane. Before you are on a plan, about one HP per ton will get you to max hull speed. After that just booost it up to 100 HP per tin and you can get on a plane. Once you are on a plane it likw in mgenerally works out to squaring your HP to double the speed, but a lot of factors can make this better our worse. Like in Marty's case with the triple 5 HP and no more speed. He got a lot faster acceleration but to get a faster top speed he would need special props.
If you can find something in the range that fits. These small outboards tend to have limited options to prevent people from overpitching and cooking their motor.
This is the reason I started following you brother.
I was just wondering where you were today & up pops your video! Let's go Z!
So glad to see you're back, Marty! Great content as always.
I like it.. Number one, it looks cool. Number two, now that you cross this off your list. You are one step closer to doing what I have always wanted you to do, which is to put a sail on one of your kayaks.😀😀 thumbs up Marty.
I think about that more often then you know, Robb
The large windpaddle sail is the best accessory on a kayak in my opinion. Easy to install on most platforms and it is faster than any other propulsion systems on the market. You typically go as fast as the wind is blowing.
@@zoffinger you know Marty, there is a big orange kayak sail in your future.😀😀
Nice update Marty! I remember you building this - hard to believe it was 3 years ago. Health is not good enough for paddling a Kayak any distance, so wish I had a Bass boat here - 1 outboard would do! Stay safe & well. 👍👍
Hi Marty. It's good to see you again.
Very cool Marty, love watching you build things. I watched that build, there isn't anything you can't do. You make my day, stay safe.
One of the Advantage is if one Motor Break down you can still Power home. I like it Cool. Enjoyed it Marty
Always glad to see notification of another Zoffinger video. Thank You, Marty.😊😊
I love this boat and all your cool creations dude. Keep building.
I love how you made the helm. Looks great and cozy
I was hoping he would post a parts list!
I remember watching the original when it first was posted and still rewatch it to this day because the build process is soo interesting
That is a SWEET little boat!! Love your setup!
I always like that you're a creative champ.
I always assumed the reason you have multiple motors on a lot of ocean going vessels was to give you spares to get back and of course not be a drift. That’s a sweet boat I wish I had the dedication and skill to do projects like that.
You’re correct. It’s a good safety measure if you run on rivers and canals too. It’s both that and performance in many cases.
Love the little addition of the drone clips!
You’re my hero. Love the silly ideas - …doin stuf just because you can. The little fun motors for little boats aren’t as dependable as the big ones. Two or more motors insure that you’ll get back home without being at the mercy of rescuers or needing to worry about a towing fee. Three motors is super silly but you could certainly become the local rescue hero for those times when others find themselves stranded by towing kayakers home when they’ve bitten off more than they should. Three motors at idle speed sipping tiny amounts of gas is probably a good tow speed.
Good to see you Marty
Keep on having fun. We are just watching your videos.
I have a similar setup that my buddy and I fish out of, minus the three outboards. Finally getting a taste of what it’s like to own a boat is tantalizing, but I still use my kayak religiously. Nothing like having the freedom to go wherever, whenever, as long as the wind conditions permit.
Yeah, it’s nice to own a boat in Florida, but you’re not gonna see the real beauty until you get out there in a kayak.
Love your videos Marty
Marty love the new 3 motor boat! I thought the 2 motor was sweet when I met you at Almost Southern Marine in Morehead city. It’s one thing to watch a video but seeing how you built it upclose is incredible!! Another great one for the books my friend!!
Fun to revisit your creations!
it is a nice "Look-at-Me" type of possession .
Wonderful to see no Booze featured in the Video & it looks like our Marty is fleshing out from good eating.
Completely and totally awesome!!! Yeeeeeeha! Go Marty. 👍👍👍👍👍👍🐟🐟
I'm coming down for a vacation in Florida Jan 27 - Feb 5 hopefully I can get some kayak fishing in while I'm down there. I'd have to find a rental place. Love the videos over the years man, keep it up!
Dude that's really cool! It was good to meet you out at ICAST this year.
Love it! If one goes down you still have two to get you home!
great video
I watched you build this boat 👍
WTG. Marty, thats pretty cool,I was wondering if I would go faster with another 25hp on my 16' skiff..love the manuverability..thanks for sharing Brother...
You sir have a great boat
Thanks Marty
Pretty cool Thanks
This is really cool thanks for making this video and the boat. Its nice to see people using the right safety kill lanyard 👍.... i should probably hook up my boats with them 😐. They are no speed boats but still its a good idea.
Very cool
That’s freaking awesome 😂
Love the build, Acceleration is your friend there. You can probably add cup to all those props and get more top speed too.
WOW. how do you do what you do? i am mind blown by the creativity
Very cool setup
Well it looks cool.
we need to see more diy . i thought i had skills but man you the shit!!
Good video as always Marty. That is true about top end speed. But in rough water, the Xtra motors should give plenty of torque to get you through. Also pull through currents as well like river currents downstream of a lake with the dam opened up. Good job with the build. 73 Earnest K5EWM.
The torque is nice. Makes me worry about pulling the bolts holding the transom through the plastic hull sometimes, but it IS nice.
Amazing 💪💪👍👍
With more motors you could run a more aggressive prop and get higher top end while not giving up low end.
I've actually thought about making a mold and melting a bunch of bud light cans down to cast new props...
Beautifull!!!!!
Neat! Thanks...
My trolling motor on my hobie (minn kota 30) gives me about 3.6 mph max. My good old trusty walmart R3 motor used to give me 4.4. When I hit top speed I feel that it is waaaaaaaay too fast for me.
When we rented a 21ft center console boat in the florida keys and I was doing 20 mph it felt like I was standing still.
I think at the end of the day going fast is something that should be reserved for open water because otherwise you miss out on the everything you came to boat for...
Not to mention if you hit anything under water at speed you are going to have a bad time.
Awesome 😎
Hell yeah marty
I've always loved the sound of a pair of outboards throttling up to get on plane.
miss the actual fishing videos and the little catch and cooks
Where it's at! I got a 10 kayaks and two canoes. Hope you have a great year! I don't need any more motors this year and I'll be catching my fish from my feet or my kayaks and canoes.
It’s definitely nice to have both.
Some days you need to get to the fishing spot quick, or a quick getaway, or whatever.
Other days it’s nice to be able to take a kayak and get in and out anywhere.
And you only need a bike to haul a kayak around. Even those with just a car do fine like myself.
Not sure I see a need of three motors when two would be fine though on a boat like this.
Lots of factors!
its. awesome
That's cool you have the killswitch around the ankle too
Awsome!!
I Love it.
man that is cool .
Throw a few higher pitch props on and you will get more speed easy. You can easily get 3” more pitch which could gain you at 3-5 more mph.
I'll have to visit a prop store someday and see if higher pitch props can be made for 5 horse Colemans.
@@zoffinger not sure if they are the same as 6hp Mercury/tohatsu,but I’ve seen 9” pitch props available for them. Amazon stocks them.
🔥🔥LEGEND🔥🔥
I know it was a while ago but can you post the parts list you put together to rig the steering? thanks!
I'd like to see you do something with a 12' solo canoe, I love mine and I can go anywhere a kayak can.
He put a 5hp on a kayak once in his previous videos
I like this
i think ill go to bullfrog creek tomorrow if the weather helps . right next to yor friend with the boat shop at the general store & market
This is really cool, brother! Hey, for a kayaker from Ohio, what is a trim tab?
They push down on the water behind the boat which raises the bow. The more they push, the higher the nose will rise.
You should make another one like this but with twin 9.9s! Just to compare the 2 boats and to say you have a twin and triple engine Jon boat
Sooooo Kool
Welp, looks like you got the Great Loop boat our of the way!
Since you have the torq ad be advantage you should be able to put a higher pitch prop and slightly tilt them up to increase max speed
Number ono, the sound of tripple motor is cool.
Much better accelration and pulling power with more motors, or one could change the propeller pitch and gain speed. Running in shallow waters, if you hit something or get problems with a motor, you always get home one two or one motor. Did I mention more motor are always cool?
The sound! The three harmonize like a chorus. It is a pleasure to hear them sing when they are in sync.
Wassup my guy!!
too cool
It's probably about how many motors you need to make it back to the shore with those Coleman's lol! just messing around I can't say cuz I've never owned one of those. There's a lot of people they hate on them though. I think that's a really cool little boat!
Maybe you can wire the kill switches in a way that they have 3 sets of wires at the end at the motor side, so you have 1 kill switch to kill all 3 outboards, with a single click or pull. Also then you have one lanyard to put on your wrist.
Hey Marty, I know you are good with fiberglass and that sort of stuff. Why don't you try and pull one of the props and make your own prop out of carbon fiber so you can get some more pitch on this boat. I love your channel by the way, best wishes all the way from cold Denmark 🇩🇰
It would be cool if you could find and put on "speed props" to see if you can get up to 30 or so.
i think the most important thing is small motors have small gearbox /propellers so you get shallow water drive with beter speed
It kind of looks like the weight and torque of the motors have bent the whole boat? I imagine there's a limited number of duty cycles of taking it out and gunning the engines
1 engine to get from point A - B I feel is enough. Raise the engine and then paddle?
How fast is one of those coleman 5 horses?
Because I can.
Because I want to.
Because I don't care what people think.
Because it's a fun project.
Because it's cool.
Because.......
😀❤️💕
Marty, hope this is ok to ask. Any word on Mike? I hope he’s in good health, that’s all.
What would happen if you run both outside motors in forward and the central motor in reverse 🤔
Would the two outside ones pull the expelled water from the central motor or should it just slow your top speed. I’ve heard that the boats with four outboards run the central most in reverse while the outer two pull but I can’t see how that would work
you said you used star board?
2:16 Also being able to haul more at the same speed
Have you tuned the props on the three motors? I found a good video that describes the tuning process. The Correct Prop For Your Boat! How To Know!
ua-cam.com/video/_l5mwbHzHBY/v-deo.html
I think you'll get less drag with 3 motors. Logically. Anyway, as usual Marty is Marty's 👍
twin 15hp big block 2 stroke OMC motors is the way to go. DOUBLE the hp, less drag , 20 lbs lighter and a myraid of props to choose from (including stainless wheels), and they rev to 6500 RPM all day.
Cool Novelty
Now you need a custom paint job on the boat and motors….. maybe like your favorite race car, or like your favorite WWII fighter plane…
< like my handle? Lmao!!
I would think even tho top speed doesnt increase, getting there happens alot quicker with 3 enignes. No?
Oh Yeah! Your guts slosh around slightly under the G's of acceleration. But only for a couple seconds and then, There you are. Topped off, wishing you had more top end.
Electric start would be a nice upgrade! But, one of the benefits of running more than one engine; if one dies, you got another to get you back.
Good point. And gas engines always seem want to give you fits now and again. It's nice having backups. What I could really use is a light to indicate when one stops running, because it's near impossible to know with the others making noise.
Faster props !
I remember when he built this
Usually, ocean-going boats have two or more motors for safety and power because they are heavy. You can get home with just one motor running.
💙👊😎
Actually not faster is not entirely true, having 3 motors allow you to change the prop for a more agressive one, have you tach them at full speed?
Dude you still have this thing?? I remember when you built it and I could have sworn you gave it away when you left for the loop. I thought that was one of your best builds yet after putting the outboard on the pedal boat.
The fact that I don't use it more is a testimony to the pain of motors and trailers and all the worries of failures. Maybe I'm lazy, but paddling is just SO more easy and enjoyable to me. The X3 sure is fun when it's going though!
@@zoffinger Well honestly Marty if you ever decide to sell it, you might just have a buyer lined up...provided I can get my gd finances in order 😂
