- Proper nutrition is important when caring for any dog, but it's especially crucial for very small breeds like the Yorkshire Terrier. Full recipe here: topdogtips.com/...
Truth be told, they're a difficult breed to feed. But, this homemade dog food for Yorkies recipe will provide your terrier with the nutrition his small body requires.
"First, you'll need to pulverize the veggies in a food processor or chop them by hand. As you can see, I chose to use sweet potato, broccoli and kale. You can use any dog-friendly vegetables you have on hand. Possible substitutions include pumpkin, green beans, carrots or peas."

Love the video but the cat was the star of the video he had me laughing the whole time! He said oh yea mama's cooking! Lol
The small amount of garlic sometimes found in dog treats is unlikely to be harmful to dogs. However, if cats or dogs ingest a tasty pan of sautéed onions, garlic, or leeks, poisoning may result. The ingestion of large numbers of garlic pills or powder may also cause poisoning.
Here’s a recipe i used for my dog that works really well, they are so much healthier now!
Ingredients:
sweet potato
Cooked unseasoned chicken
Brown rice (or white whichever you prefer)
Turmeric (i just eyeball it depending on how much i make)
Cinnamon
just mix that together! works great for my dogs. And it doesn’t hurt to throw an occasional egg shell in there for some calcium 😉
Did you cook the veggies and rice? I’m presuming so but you don’t say yet said cooked chicken. Some are saying cooking the veggies is taking the good out but I’ve been cooking my dogs sweet potato for years.
@Lyn McNairn it’s perfectly fine to cook the vegetables and rice ;)
I have always fed my dogs raw chicken...
Do you do a raw egg?
Lovely easy recipe. Thank you very much for sharing. Will make a batch for my small dogs 🤗🤗🤗🤗🐶🐶🐕
Hmmmmm... Our vet said dogs cannot digest turkey and in particular, small dogs. She says that's one of the biggest mistakes pet owners make and when I spoke with her about making our baby's food she said that turkey and pork should NOT be given to Yorkies. You might want to check with yours if you haven't already. Other than that, fantastic recipe! Thank you for taking time to make it!
Interesting, Our pet nutritionist says Turkey is one of the best meats for yorkies. Not sure why your vet would say that.
My Yorkie has been eating ground turkey for years and he is just fine. He loves it and he digests it.
My Yorkie loves turkey.
Thanks for stating out that this does not work for all types of dogs. Another great recipe Samantha.
Thanks Samantha. We have a picky eater on our hands. She's 3 1/2 pounds and 19 weeks old.
THANK YOU
Ok, so I am wondering how many times a day do you feed your yorkie, you said a half cup up to 3 1/2 pounds an 1 cup up to 7 pounds? I have a yorkie puppy that was rescued & I am just learning all about them, I find your recipe wonderful & am going to give it a try, just not so sure of the feeding regimen for yorkie puppies, thanks
I thought Garlic was toxic for dogs
it isn't technically toxic, it is too overwhelming for them, which indirectly is harmful. don't feed it to them,.
Garlic is only harmful in huge amounts. Just like it would be for humans. If you want to know more follow the vet Dr. Karen Becker. She has videos that address the garlic concern and talks about the study that concluded garlic was bad for dogs. What most people don't realize is that the study gave enormous amounts of garlic to one specific breed of dog. More than any sane person would ever eat themselves or feed their pet.
Yes, it is
It's a weight vs toxin ratio just like chocolate. Why big dogs who scarf on a huge milk chocolate bar and be completely unaffected while a small dog would be very sick or die.
mosthated6611 never give your dog garlic, or chocolate or grapes never let your dog have onions cooked or raw . If this girl gives her dog garlic...he’s going to die real soon.
What a cute cheeky cat. I have a chorkie he is so fussy not a dog motivated by food at all.
My York terrier picky eater also
Very good video, thank you.
The cat on the counter oh hell no never mine
half a cup a day or at every feeding? this was amazing. i just got a shorkie three days ago and i'm once i talk to a vet if everything goes well, i want to transition him to regular food.
Omg what is a shorkie?? Lol I have a Chorkie (chihuahua/yorkie) how did this recipe work for you ? Thx ☺️
@lotusvibration ^
I read a recipe online from Top Dog Tips, and it called for two cloves of garlic. What I've read online says do not give garlic to dogs... can someone explain please?
Great tips and that cat was cracking me up :D
I have been doing this for my Yorkie after I noticed health issues like limping on her hind leg. That was 4 years ago. She is now 11 years old and she is more healthy than any dog I know at her age. Also, no more limping. Just to be clear, she limped for 6 months or more. Vets wanted to do surgery, feed her pills, and nutrition's wanted her on a vitamin regimens. after starting the real food by the suggestions I found on sites like this her limping stopped after only a couple of weeks. Tried going back to little ceaser and the limping returned. I'm sold on this. STOP FEEDING YOUR DOGS DEAD FOOD.
What a great recipe, I'm going to pass this on to a friend with a yorkie!
Tell her to omit the Garlic! It is TOXIC to dogs!
Excellent Video! Apologies for chiming in, I would love your thoughts. Have you tried - Parlandealey Pets Yummy Process (do a google search)? It is an awesome exclusive guide for discovering healthy recipes for dog food minus the normal expense. Ive heard some pretty good things about it and my cousin at last got cool results with it.
Then they will have a DEAD yorkie !! Garlic is very toxic in the smallest quantity , It also kills there white blood cells.. This video should be removed from u tube
My yorkie has been eating same fish based hard food for 4 years now. But lately he has been licking his one paw and i read it could be not enough meat intake. Or it could also be allergies . I’m considering blending in some meat into his food.
How much liver do you use and you also put in the blood?
Great video thanks! My first attempt cooking natural foods for my Yorkies today! Crockpot chicken then boiled the brown rice to the left over juices to suck up the flavour.. Shredded the chicken and added a bowl of mashed carrot.. Oscar and Charlie loved it! 👌🏻
Cameron Forbes I used that recipe with the exception, I used mashed pumpkin because my pitbull had diarrhea. They both loved it and it hardened Titus' stool. Both rescues and the yorkie runs both me and Titus
You should boil the chicken not roast or crock pot. you need to get the fat out, the fat is not good for them therefore cooking the rice in the juices is counter productive.
@@syleiswiley266 I have a pittbull and a Yorkie. Both have tummy issues.. especially my sunny girl. She’s extremely picky but I’m thinking this recipe would be best for her taste buds.
@@donnadubeck6462 thanks for the advice. 😊
How long this food can last in fridge? Do you freeze it in bags or not?
Hello, I have a 15.2 pounds yorkie. Is that 2 cups of food a day? (of this food)
Also if I don't have fish can I use cooked tuna can?
Is your yorkie mixed? Yorkies shouldn’t be nomore then 7-8lbs
Do you cover it?
May we see the end product. Please!!
Yea what the heck? Didn’t show the food in the pot at all. This is practically a “recipe” and not a good video at all
Can I make it in a pressure cooker?
Stopped at garlic. Sorry, no way.
YorkieLuv Yeh it’s toxic for dogs
No it’s not except in large doses. Please do your research.
Cheers for the Video! Sorry for the intrusion, I would love your initial thoughts. Have you tried - Parlandealey Pets Yummy Process (Sure I saw it on Google)? It is a smashing one of a kind guide for discovering healthy recipes for dog food without the headache. Ive heard some decent things about it and my BF got astronomical results with it.
YorkieLuv ya no garlec ever!!!! Poison
I like how she says 1) everydog is different .. 2) check with your vet 3) small quantities of garlic... micro doses ... or jjust skip the garlic???
Also heads up my yorkie does not do well with turkey. He barfs with it so be cautious
Everyone is saying that garlic is bad for dogs, but do you know what is in the dog food you buy from your store! Are there studies out there that prove that garlic is toxic for dogs? I swear no one will do their own research but take the word of another person just because they said it.
There is research that concludes garlic is bad for dogs. Onions and grapes too. And you can read the ingredients in dog food so you would know what is in there.
I have a 13 pound yorkie and he is actually bigger than both his parents he is more medium sized ..and he is not over fed and very heathy with his normal food..
kristin anderson same
Thank you. Is this a daily portion?
Is that one cup a day or twice a day?
Good question?
I have a three month little Yorky my vet told me half a cup per day I can split it in 2 meals 3 meals or 4 meals but overall for one day half a cup
My Yorkie is almost 20lbs, I dunno how this happened, he is pure bread and was even the runt of the litter. I love him though and I prefer him a little bigger. How many cups does your dish make in total though? What do you do with the left overs? Do you freeze it? Keep it in the fridge? Next time you serve it to your dog do you heat it in the microwave? heat the whole thing back up on the stove?
WTF MINES 4 TO 6 POUNDS YOU DONT HAVE A YORKIE BRO YOU HAVE A HORSE
Is it 1/2 cup a serving or totaled out everyday???
When you say 1 cup for 7 pound yorkie, do you mean daily 1 cup or each meal has to be 1 cup?
My Yorkie eats almost everything. No garlic!
And for all complaining about the cat lol yes it's gross but she is cooking for her dog so I'm sure that's why its not a big deal right now. Everyone is just so quick to judge and post something negative!
its fine once in a while, helps keep fleas away
Why didn’t you show the results?
Does anyone know the amount of oz in one can of Mackeral ? and can the Lean Ground Turkey be substituted with another lean ground meat?
can you freeze this???
I love this recipe and will ask Rambo's vet if okay to use, but I thought they also needed hard food to keep teeth healthy and strong - can I opt to use raw carrots and/or sweet potatoes if everything else is cooked in the mix of this diet?
very small bite-size carrots are okay. Most breeders and AKC says raw sweet potato could be hard on digestion. Cooked sweet potato is good, and always remove the skin...again very hard on digestion
Hehe I have the same black jars as in the background
can you puree it after cooking>
Would this recipe work for a poodle miniature? She’s a really picky eater
Hello, I’m considering buying a Yorkie and live on a boat. I plan on buying a lot of canned food to have on-board for longer trips. Could you tell me what canned foods are best for a yorkies diet? Thank you
yorkies are prone to teeth/gum problems. Canned food sometimes, but they need little kibble bites of dry to help prevent the teeth and gum problems
Gonna do a cheaper version of this for my 13 lb yorkie
Can I use this recipe in a pressure cooker?
did you add water?
Ok I was super on board until she added garlic! Garlic is toxic to dogs, is it not??
Only in large doses.
Hi how much time does this stay?
why add garlic though?
I don’t agree brown rice takes to long for dogs to digest with their small tummies. Why are many people saying garlic is poisoness. to them. I wish you let people see what was in your pot before you added the water.
I only gave my Yorkie garlic when she had worms for 2-3 day max followed by other things, but never regularly daily in her food it is factually toxic for dogs.
No one should listen to a woman who uses garlic in dog food or who lets a cat walk and sit on a kitchen counter. You show outlandish ignorance.
Anna Lisa garlic is only toxic in large doses. Do your research.
Hey, anyone know how long do we keep this home made food in the fridge? I'm a new Yorkie owner and I'm extremely afraid to do any wrong moves. A bit of inside from anyone would be extremely helpful.
tati gomez I’m not the original poster but I would think 3-4 days in the fridge at most. Basically if I wouldn’t eat it, I wouldn’t feed it to my dogs. You can freeze it though and thaw as needed.
tati gomez I would freeze portion sizes and let whatever you need the next day thaw overnight in the fridge.
Garlic wow
Not garlic omg
Love the cat lol!
Great video content! Apologies for the intrusion, I am interested in your opinion. Have you ever tried - Parlandealey Pets Yummy Process (Sure I saw it on Google)? It is a good exclusive product for discovering healthy recipes for dog food minus the normal expense. Ive heard some unbelievable things about it and my m8 after many years got excellent results with it.
DONT GIVE YOUR DOGS GARLIC OR ONIONS IT CAN KILL THE, DONT EVER GIVE THEM GRAPES OR RAISINS NEVER CHOCOLATE OR MACADAMIA NUTS .
But ty for the video
Feel like you’ve never done this before….
KITTY!
That cat tho!
Ok, I like the recipe just I thought garlic is not good for dogs as onions. We should not put garlic. I also know is better don’t put salt or any species.
Garlic is toxic to dogs. I would add some turmeric (and a few grinds of black pepper to activate the turmeric) and some nutritional yeast as well. I'd also use bone broth as the liquid to help their gut flora
Grains are carbs & not good for dogs or cats in general, especially small breed dogs. Maybe just very small amounts occasionally. Or Quinoa is a better choice, tho' still carbs.
Broccoli causes stones in dogs
Garlic is on the same list with chocolate - toxic to dogs!
Nancye Combs garlic and chocolate are only toxic in large doses. Do your research.
Ohio Ladybug yea, but it’s still unhealthy!
what about calcium? just wanted to know....
Jenna Shepherd egg shells
can i remove garlic from the recipe?
UltraPlus Nightcore you NEED to remove the garlic. It’s toxic for dogs and could mess their stomachs up very badly.
I'm going to go ahead and give you permission.
I added a wee bit of sweet potato and instantly regretted it. Our yorkie had gas for days. Nasty gas could barely stand it.
I talked to my vet about your recipe and she told me to stop watching you. Dogs do not need kale or garlic. Also, you should keep the cat off the counter. Very unsanitary.
It’s a no no for garlic !!
nubian1911 I know that's nasty . She didn't wash her hands I wouldnever eat her cooking
Lovely Video! Excuse me for butting in, I would love your opinion. Have you tried - Parlandealey Pets Yummy Process (erm, check it on google should be there)? It is a good one off guide for discovering healthy recipes for dog food without the normal expense. Ive heard some great things about it and my m8 finally got amazing success with it.
Excellent Video clip! Sorry for butting in, I would love your thoughts. Have you heard the talk about - Parlandealey Pets Yummy Process (erm, check it on google should be there)? It is a smashing one of a kind product for discovering healthy recipes for dog food minus the hard work. Ive heard some amazing things about it and my BF at last got cool success with it.
nubian1911 Lololol
The low boiling is not working!
130min no boil
Oh my gosh, watching a cat climbing on the kitchen counters after using a litter box is a deal breaker for me. I cant not make myself believe cat hair doesn’t get in your human food
many places it is stated that garlic is not good for dogs
why do u cook it? I thought this was a raw recipe?
It was all good until you cooked it. You killed off all the live enzymes in the raw vegetables. Plus garlic in a can don't contain allicin. And raw meat is good for dogs.
Absolutely raw meat.. Steaming the veggies I would have done as my shih Tzu will not eat them raw. And added Coconut oil(prevents Yeast buildup) and omega 3 oils.
My yorkie mix can't tolerate raw poultry. He gets nauseous on more than a bit of raw beef too. And dogs don't eat raw vegs in the wild. Most of their vegetative matter comes from the digestive tract of prey ( well broken down).
Get the Cat off the counters!! Wheeze that's why I don't like Cats!!
🤣😂🤣😂🤣🤣😂🤣😂🤣😂
Use an instant pot to cook it faster.
My YORKIES Love Garlic Toast One Is 16 years Old One Is14 years Old
I thought garlic wasn’t good for our fur babies
So funny my yourkies named Samantha
Yorkies arent suppose to eat kale
Dogs should not eat brown rice, their digestive trac is too short to process it. I have a Yorkie and would never feed them garlic or brown rice. And you should grind up the egg shells because they need calcium which is in processed dog food but not in home made dog food.
Why even add garlic? Aside from the fact that it’s not good for dogs to eat. You shouldn’t be okay that this video is on the Internet. People will use this recipe and harm their animal
Shannon Marquis garlic is only toxic in large doses. Do your research.
That cat on the counter is nasty, they walk in litter boxes, and bury crap, I keep my cat in one room or throw his as outside
No garlic or carbs like sweet potato!!
Top cat tips*
train your cats from the age of kittens,
they are not welcome on kitchen surfaces if you can't then to be locked out of kitchen 😸
I thought yorkies can be allergic to eggs?
1 cup? Really?
Put that cat in the blender,, bet it won't climb up on the counter anymore 😸😸😸
frequentflyer 🤣
To much rice isn’t good either
Most of her videos are absolutely unrealistic. Most yorkies and dogs in particular, would NOT eat the Legit crap she is MUSHING ALL TOGETHER! FACTS are most dogs do not even remotely like fish!
All that to not show wtf it look like done?
please everyone dont repeat this at home
I really can't finish watching. It's the voice sorry
Cats on the Counters and licking in containers while cooking? Gross!
i stopped watching your video, just because you were so irritated with your cat for `spoiling` the video
Is toxic to dogs never give it to them so is onions grapes
OMG, I can’t watch this video. The cat on the counter while you’re cooking is just unsanitary. My kitchen counter is NOT for animals or humans to sit and/or walk on.
IS SHE TRYING TO KILL HER DOG?! YOU CANNOT FEED GARLIC TO DOGS
Domm Uniquee garlic is only toxic in large doses. Do your research.
Ohio Ladybug large and small doses are both toxic for dogs, especially small ones. Do your research.
Per AKC.org and www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC2984110/---How much garlic is toxic to dogs?
Studies have found it takes approximately 15 to 30 grams of garlic per kilograms of body weight to produce harmful changes in a dog’s blood. To put that into perspective, the average clove of supermarket garlic weighs between 3 and 7 grams, so your dog would have to eat a lot to get really sick. --soooo I have done my research!!!!!
