    Hey Daniel, that buck turned out beautiful. Never seen one with short hair. I'm use to the northern bucks that has longer hair. You make it look so easy, but after years of doing it, I guess it would be easier. Great job my friend. Hope you're feeling better soon. Take care and be safe.

    Nice job. If I get me a turkey this year I’m gonna attempt my first turkey mount.

    I just can’t seem to figure out how your getting so much detail lol for the most part I use Matt Thomson forms or Ben mears and I’ve recently got a fleshing machine to get my hides thinner but I can get that definition, could it be the forms or maybe something to do with the hid paste I’m using? And I’m working on sc deer so there not crazy thick haired

      This particular deer was taken on an August rut hunt so the skin and hair is incredibly thin. Also, are you getting Ben Mears forms from him personally out of Mantachie or are you ordering the ones from McKenzie taxidermy supply? I use Pro 1 hide paste, which is the best I’ve ever used.

    Hey, I’ve recently started doing taxidermy and I love doing it. But I’ve had a reoccurring problem of my hide pulling away from the eyes and mouth as it drys. Any recommendations?

    • @thecedarridgechronicles
      @thecedarridgechronicles  6 місяців тому

      The hide is probably a little too thick. Try thinning it as thin as possible when fleshing, then go back after it is tanned just before mounting and thin it with a scalpel or skiving knife around those areas. The thinner it is, the less it will shrink

    • @thecedarridgechronicles
      @thecedarridgechronicles  6 місяців тому

      Also, try ordering 1/4 inch shorter nose than what you measure. It will allow the hide to shrink into the form rather than pull against it

    A few year back I saw a doe with antlers that was shot on thanksgiving day mounted. The velvet had started peeling off in strips and being a doe it was the ugliest mounts I have seen.

      It looks really weird when a doe has antlers. It sure don’t make them look like a buck.

    I have 2 velvet bucks mounted. By a very well-known taxidermist in my area. And the came out amazing And I had a friend of mine who went to a taxidermis he had the taxidermis talk him into a fake velvet when you put them side by side what a difference. When we put them side by side what a difference when we did that he was totally disappointed that he allowed the Taxidermis to talk him in to that I told him to take the deer head to my guy. He said he couldn't. It was too expensive.

      Yup. Real velvet is beautiful but a lot of people just can’t afford the difference in price

    Does a thinner cape help show muscle detail?

    • @thecedarridgechronicles
      @thecedarridgechronicles  6 місяців тому

      Yes it does big time. It is the most important thing you can do to show details

    • @ashleybrown8488
      @ashleybrown8488 6 місяців тому

      That makes sense, but if they have a thick winter coat like my whitetail does it doesn’t show a lot of detail and aint much you can do.

    • @thecedarridgechronicles
      @thecedarridgechronicles  6 місяців тому +1

      @@ashleybrown8488 that’s right. The longer the hair the less will show, but a thicker cape also shrinks significantly while drying which causes drumming and makes it very hard to show even large muscular detail opposed to a thinner cape
