Definitely just invest in a 30$/50$ stud finder the ones now will tell you center of the stud

Put them in the center of the space, no studs needed. Use 50pound drywall anchors. The ones with the blue inserts. Your welcome

Union carpenter trick to help find studs: strong magnets. They can pull towards screwheads and help locate studs that way.

Another way to find a stud, is knocking on the wall and see if it sounds hollow or not. Some walls you can hear it good and others not so much.

Definitely do not put a cape on ice. Need to keep it dry or it will ruin it and cause slippage
