A great live album from Rush is "A Show of Hands", which features mostly 80's Rush. Predominantly from Hold Your Fire, and Power Windows. I had a VHS tape of it back in the day that I wore out watching it so much. So, if you want to watch a great live show, check it out. Of course, you may want to react to each song individually before you watch it.

I like all Rush catalog, studio, live albums and videos. I have them all.
I don't want to go to the eternal debate of "the best" or "favorite".
I can't explain why, but "A Show of Hands" is my most played Rush live video.
It's so brilliant, but I have to accept that some Rush fans don't like 80s Rush or beyond 70s.

Also, when you start reacting to the deep cuts, they are all gems like the deep cuts on other Rush albums like Middletown Dreams, Between The Wheels, Losing It, Bravado, Double Agent, and Vital Signs.

You should check out the song, Turn The Page from this same album. To me, it's the high point of HYF. This album is one that I didn't much care for at first. It has aged well and I've come to appreciate it years later.

Yes, it's balls to the wall 80s prog rock with this face melting intro to Hold Your Fire, which I'm pretty sure has now climed to the very top of my all time favourite albums list. Every track is killer. Definitely at the top of their game here. Everything is just so sophisticated and accessible. You're not really a Rush fan if you don't embrace this era of the bands musical evolution.

Thanks for inviting Lex. This entire album is a gem. Closing out the album is a jewel as y"all can sit back and relax, turn it up, close your eyes and enjoy the SOUND!! The WATER will take you HOME!!! This song imo has easily the best guitar work and instumental piece in the album. So beautiful!!!

In 1987, I was on a Backcountry trail crew in the High Sierra mountains of Yosemite National Park. Our camp was seven miles in from the nearest road. One Saturday afternoon, I wanted to see what music I could find on the radio. This was WAY before the Internet. I climbed up a ridge, sat down, and started looking for a radio station.
I heard a drum riff that sounded pretty cool and stopped dialing. There was more cool drum stuff, and maybe a chorus or synth. Then the bass started.
I said, "That sounds like Geddy Lee, but I don't recognize this song."
Then the singing started and I KNEW it was Geddy Lee and a Rush song I didn't know.
And that was how I discovered Rush had just dropped a new album in 1987. I had to wait until my summer in the mountains was done, so it was October before I could get the whole album. Loved it then. Love it now!

Wow, loved how you found the song and also the anticipation of having to wait before being able to purchase an album! Nowadays, even in the mountains with a lil cell service you'd be able to have the album instantly on Spotify.
      Not the same!

This song was my anthem when I lost my 7 month old son to brain cancer in 1996. A friend of mine bought tickets for me to see them in Maryland on the Test for Echo tour a month after he passed away. They played this song about 3 songs in .

I fondly remember this song being our first look at "Hold Your Fire" and came out 37 years ago around this time in the Summer of 1987, right before I went off to college in late August. To show you how much times have changed, I first heard this song after a friend called me to say he had recorded it off the radio and that I should come over for a listen! This was "music sharing" 80s style! As always, nice pick and great reaction!

I don't understand people who think that Rush stopped being progressive when the 1970's ended. There is so much more complexity to the arrangements they came up with in the 1980's than they ever had before, they just learned to integrate things more smoothly so the changes weren't as obvious. Hold Your Fire is a very good album, but a couple of tracks too long.

Like seriously - I’ve run into so many people who have claimed, “yeah, I pretty much stopped listening after 2112…”
Such a missed opportunity - this band grew so much throughout their entire career.

    • @bookhouseboy280
      @bookhouseboy280 2 місяці тому +3

From a band point of view, we certainly worked on our musicianship first, then - armed with that increased facility and confidence in our individual instruments - expanded into paying more attention to songwriting, arranging, and production ... It’s about nineteen-eighty that I really start to like our music like a fan. Before that there’s stuff I like in an affectionate way, because we were brave, but as far as achievement I really think we started to bring it together a bit with Permanent Waves…, but particularly Moving Pictures and from then on. - Neil

@@markgettemeyer1145, I never stopped listening and never will stop, but after their Presto album, the band made a conscious effort to change their musical direction, which, except for a couple of notable exceptions like Counterparts and Snakes and Arrows, I just wasn't personally down with. But there were still some amazing songs interspersed. It's just that they didn't have any complete sublime masterpiece albums in the last part of their career, although Snakes and Arrows came close. And yes, I know that Clockwork Angels is highly regarded by fans, and I do admit it was stellar and a great way to end their transcendent career. As for Hold Your Fire, I think it was their weakest effort in their peak period (roughly covering 2112 through Presto), but there's still some incredible music on it like Force Ten. But Turn the Page and Open Secrets are the highlights of the album by far for me.

    • @JC-tq8gm
      @JC-tq8gm 2 місяці тому +2

@@DionysusAlS They lost me after Hold Your Fire, and for some reason I think everything started sounding the same and in a way I wasn't digging. They got me (at 16) when they released 2112 and then I learned what having a bad sound system meant. It was an old turntable cabinet that my parents had had for years, must have weighed 150 lbs, and the right speaker didn't work, so they moved it into my room so I would have something to play my records on. I was not moving in stereo. lol

This album, and Moving Pictures were my first two Rush albums, as I hit my teens in the 80's and had some money to buy full albums. I went to the "Hold your Fire" tour when they came around and was blown away by that, which also meant I needed to go buy more albums! A tech note from that concert, while the Aimee Mann parts were recorded, the show opened with their "Three Stooges" themes, and right into "Force Ten" - and it was in surround, with the heavy beats and swirly sounds mixed into rear speakers! Thump! (Front), Thump (back!) Great show as always! (Edited to add:) This song is 80's exactly in the same way that Yes was 80's, right down to the sampled Stab type sounds - you should go back to Yes and give it shake, with the Big Generator album, as progressive didn't die, it just progressed!

They recently listened to "Love Will Find A Way" from Big Generator by Yes. Alexia was disappointed, that it was too much a deviation from their classic prog sound. Prior to that, Nick and Lex listened to Yes' cover of "America" and they both loved it!

Nick, given the complexities of the tunes and the wall of keyboards, sequencers, and other sonic accouterments, eating up both the high and middle frequencies the guitar would normally occupy, and the fact that all the keyboards were laid down before Alex's guitar, he really struggled to find a way to fit into the band. He nearly left the band, and by the end of that tour, told his bandmates he was probably done.
So while Alex was certainly a fan of Holdsworth, learning some of Holdsworth's style was really a matter of necessity, looking for a way to fit in to where the other two were headed.
In the end, the keyboard years forced Alex to become a much more skilled and diversified writer and player.

This was the first studio release the band made after I became a fan. I loved every inch of it. Decades later I never listen to this album in studio form. The live versions are more epic to me as they figure out how to play the multitracked layers live. And don’t come after me because Geddy and Alex have both said they hate the song Tai Shan on this album.

If you have reacted to 30 Rush songs, then you have 148 original songs and 8 cover songs left to react too. Out of all those songs, there are just two that I don't care for, one due to the lyrics that hit too close to home in a negative way for me, and one due to everything. But I will not name them, because it is a personal opinion and I don't want to scare you away from a Rush song you might enjoy. I will say that one of those songs is on the Hold Your Fire album, but I still love the album.

Lex, so glad you got to hear Force Ten. As i commented in Nick & Narvik's marathon. You've now heard the three great songs off this album. The rest are good, just not great.
I love Rush, have all the albums, cds, dvds, seen them like 28 times, starting with their first show with Neil's first show with the band in the US. But they have a couple of albums that are good not great & this is one of them, imo. Every album is going to have a couple of fantastic songs on them & most of their albums are great from beginning to end.
But Hold Your Fire is not one of those.
Guys, please check out the Garden from their last studio album, Clockwork Angels. It's such a beautiful song & one of my all time favorites.

There is quite a bit of solo parts in this song. The little solo licks during the verses were a massive departure for Alex, plus the main instrumental break is also a very sparse, textual solo as opposed the the sonic bombast that guitar solos are typically associated as being. Watch the "Show of Hands" version of this song and you'll see what I mean.

I'm about 2 minutes in and I can safely say that I much prefer 70's Rush. The 80's had some really fine music but it was not a good era for prog bands IMO.....Yes maybe but Kansas certainly lost their way to soft rock....but both those bands and Rush eventually returned to what they do best and to their true calling.....prog.....leaving the 80's behind and thank goodness they did.
