YES to songs from Yes! A Yes song is like taking a psychedelic drug; you've just got to go with the flow if you want to make it through the experience...
This group is the furthest edge of progressive rock, with extreme changes in (musical) time to create tension and resolution. It has the finest musicians to twist and untwist the listener.
You have to just sit back and go for a ride, trusting that those in charge will eventually get you to your destination. It's a spiritual experience for those willing to relax and let go... A lot of folks just can't let go, and want to understand every step, but spiritual experiences are ineffable.
Wow! You just summed up Yes and the Yes experience perfectly just now. It's like you said, you just got to let yourself go and let yourself be drawn into the music. That's what happened to me when I was about 12 years old in the 70s.
For me it was when I was 15, and experimenting with hallucinogens beginning in '69@@paulleduc93. Yes helped me on my way!
I wouldn't call them the furthest edge of prog, King Crimson and Van Der Graaf Generator can get really dissonant and out there. And that's not even mentioning the subgeneres of Zeuhl, Avant-Prog, RIO. Things get fucking WILD.
I think you're forgetting Emerson, Lake and Palmer. Especially Tarkus.
For a first experience with Yes you really dove into the deep end!
Yes' Close to the Edge is a classical piece of music with rock instruments. It's such a masterpiece.
Welcome to YES!
Yes are a one of the best progressive rock bands ever. Right up there with Pink Floyd, Emerson, Lake and Palmer, and early Genesis. Don't let this one be your last. Check out Starsip Trooper, And You and I, Awaken, and Yours Is No Disgrace.
Yes is my favorite band ever!!!
Yo holy crap! Awesome to see you here!
YES is true art in rock music .... you'll be forever finding stuff in their music.... even after 40 years i never tire of them.
I saw a big smile on your face at the end: that's just what Yes music does to someone!
Progressive rock involves changes in rhythm, meter, scale, and musical genre, which usually revolves a central -- but recurring -- theme. For those who are not used to it, it can be quite confusing. But I promise it gets better when you listen to more of it and begin to understand it.
The song is usually a theatrical performance: it's telling a story.
The musicianship necessary to do something like this is extraordinary. Appreciate that, first.
In this particular piece, the theme is about finding peace in a very chaotic world. It's why the song starts out discordant and messy and ends very differently. That was deliberate.
If you've ever listened to a symphony and gotten familiar with it, everything by Yes makes perfect sense. It's just a lot of songs drawn together, with interweaving themes.
Many in America..we do not "get" this song's meaning..but YOU do! .. "Peace"
Roundabout would have been a better first track to introduce you to the magic that is YES. ✌️♥️🇬🇧
Yes, but nothing will ever top Close to the Edge.
@@mr.orange8211 agreed, but roundabout is a little less chaotic for a first time listen.
Prog can be a head-fuck if you're only used to 4/4 time signature.
The first segment is supposed to be dissonant and create a feeling of chaos, exactly what they were going for. It makes the way the rest of the song washes over you even more blissful. Great reaction, welcome to the YES rabbit hole.
loads of other YES classics to choose from, REVEALING SCIENCE OF GOD, THE REMEMBERING, SOUND CHASER, TO BE OVER, GATES OF DELIRIUM,AWAKENING,TURN OF THE CENTURY,YOURS IS NO DISGRACE. and many more from the 70s classic Yes line up. You are so lucky to be hearing all this YES music for the first time
Thanks❤️
Perfect recommendations
GATES OF DELIRIUM!!
If you like this kind of music (also for private listening) I recommend the album "Yessongs". That's 2 hours of concert recording. It was the first Yes album I heard and I fell head over heels in love with the music. That was about 47 years ago, but love has not yet started rusting.
Thanks for the recommendation 💖
Welcome to a special part of the music universe called Yes space. Close to the Edge is a massive prog rock epic. I first heard it in my teens back in the 70s and have heard it 100's of times. You only ever like it more. If you revisit this song a few times you will hear new things not noticed before because, it is a journey. Yes at that time produced amazing soundscapes that delighted your ears and mind. So the best way to listen to Yes is distraction free, in a darkened room though very good headphones in a comfy chair. It is great to see this music can work it's magic on the younger generation in 2021. A timeless epic. You can almost try any Yes song from "The Yes Album", "Fragile" and "Close to the Edge" and you will be rewarded. Also yes were great on-stage so you can look for YesSongs recorded in 1973 and compare their studio and stage versions (both are great in different ways). Many thanks for your reaction and visiting Yes space.
First reaction on this so (beautifully created) complex song of Yes is impossible. When I was young I had to listen and listen and listen ... to somehow understand the music. You have to filter out and be able to listen to each instrument on its tribute. So listen many times to hear the guitar (Steve Howe), many times to hear the drumming (Bill Bruford), the bass-rhytms (Chris Squire), the keyboardplayer (Rick Wakeman) and of course the lyrics sung (Jon Anderson). Reacting on a song like this needs experience with many Yes-songs before. I cannot describe my view on a painting of Rembrandt, when looking first time on The Night Watch at a painting of Van Gogh, Sun flowers. No one can judge that quality, before having digged into all the trials and the struggles of the artist!
Oh girl, you are in for so much more music to discover. Not only by Yes. In the 70s there were lots of bands with amazing music like this: The British bands Genesis, Emerson, Lake & Palmer, King Crimson, Jethro Tull, Pink Floyd, Van der Graaf Generator, Hawkwind, Gentle Giant and Camel, the French bands Magma and Gong, the German bands Amon Düül 2, Can, Embryo or Guru Guru - the list goes on and on.
It does indeed. You could add Caravan, Greenslade, Nektar and one of my favourites which gets overlooked, Quatermass s/t album.
"And You And I" by Yes from the same album
That intro is like being hurled into a particle accelerator and being hammered with charged electrons non-stop for three minutes. This must have been exactly what they intended; the flux and fury of the cosmos within every person must sound like THAT!! Lol..
Now be honest with me, am I the only one who tears up when I hear Chris breaking into "in her white lace you can clearly see the lady sadly looking and also I get up I get down kills me
The peak of musical expression YES !
Welcome to "Yes World" The greatest Prog band of all time. Their music is a portal to a better place. Use it at your own risk. There is no going back.
This is the real music!
This was recorded in the early 70's and people listened to albums and were willing to listen to a 15 or 20 minute song. Try the Yes song Awaken; another epic song.
From chaos to resolution.
Their most popular (most approachable music) is probably the songs "Roundabout" and "I've Seen All Good People"
I am so f****** sick of the ads keeo them the f*** out nobody wants to watch them anyhow😤😤
the funny thing about Yes is: when you get really familiar with a piece (like CTTE), you realize that every part of it makes perfect sense and belongs exactly where it is. I don't know how they did that.......I suggest that your next Yes song be Roundabout. Save Awaken for a little later.
I'm glad you liked this, And You And I is of a very similar bent.
You have immaculately fantastic hair! :)
Thank you❤️
Every section is so well compose. The dramatic beginning instrumental actually builds, the melodic theme that comes next has slight engaging alterations to keep it unpredictable and even the funky section shifts from 3/4 bass to 4/4 and then ambient instrumental transition subtly changes before entering the GEt up GEt down harmonies and finally into the synth solo that climaxes into all the various themes combined to take you into the intense emotional crescendo. It's a brilliant masterpiece and the best of what I consider something Beyond Rock
you dived in at the deep end with this one.a more easy approach starting with the YES ALBUM, theN FRAGILE would be my advice
Okay I see
Kindly drop some suggestions
@@Enny_Fash yours is no disgrace, starship trooper, roundabout, awaken, siberian khatru, and you and I, Ive seen all good people, then for a more gentle side of YES try wondrous stories and turn of the century...you might need a box of tissues handy for that one....they have a wealth of musical masterpieces to dive in to, try to keep to the 1970s albums for the best music
YES invented HIP-HOP!!
I really enjoyed your reaction
I love these prog Rock reactions. So many good things!
Try listening to Gates of Delirium... it's just a bit more accomplished. 🙏😉
The bands and musicians at this time gave more in one track than many posterior bands during their entire career .
Songs from the album "Fragile" are an easier way to slip into the Yes bath. This is one of, if not the most, complex songs they did. You really have to listen to it more than once, and over a period of time to appreciate it fully
She needs to use a good set of headphones to get the full benefit of this masterpiece.
As much as a die-hard yes fan I am I only listen to the '70s albums. once in a while I listen to magnification one of the last greatest albums.
Please check out Yes "Yours is no Disgrace"
Great reaction ..Long epic Yes songs is not easy to react to lol
Ok well you certainly went for it and we'll done getting part the first section, I thought you were going to stop at one point 🤣 thankfully you were in for the journey and up for the roller coaster that is a Yes epic.
To get the best out of Yes you have to travel the same road they took to create these masterpieces so go back a little in time and next listen to 'Roundabout' try and go for the 2003 remastered version.
We'll hold your hand through the journey from there. It's definately worthwhile 😊😊😊
AHAHAH! .... It's been very hard, but you got it!!
Hey Enny, the first part that seemed confusing, kinda chaotic is something some progressive songs begin with. It's a warmup to clear your mind by jumbling it up a bit to eliminate expectations. A lot of prog rock songs have long warmups like this. Pink Floyd does this on many. BTW, great first Yes album choice, and picking the first song and title song too on the album! When you do Yes again please do the next song on this album, "And You and I". A very nice one, and the 3rd and final song "Siberian Khatru" is awesome! There's only three incredible songs on this entire album as that's another progressive rock trait... long songs, sometimes! I get the feeling you're going to listen to this album many times in your life! Yes has several fine early albums from the 70s like this one. ✌️😎
@Satanic Panic Fun and Games Not sure I understand what you mean. Are you saying they made this song for those dropping acid? I know of people who dropped acid back then and really loved the music, but when this album came out there wasn't any hint they made it for hard drug users trippin' out. Here's another commenter who wrote this about Yes that rings true.....
"What you had with Yes at that time was a jazz drummer, an inventive, musically astute bassist who spent his youth in a church choir singing classical music filled with rich harmonies, a highly gifted classically trained keyboardist who mastered the newest analog electronic keyboards, a masterful wizard guitarist steeped in rock, jazz and blues, a driven, focused, creative, gifted singer, and a brilliant producer. Plus a record company paying all of them to create this kind of music for increasingly eager audiences. The lure of fans was not only the music, but the fact they could perform (playing and singing) their recorded songs live, while sounding exactly the same, or even better than the studio recordings. Doubtful they were under the influence of serious drugs while writing and recording beyond the accepted functional norm of that time for musicians (some drink and weed). For them, the music alone was often the high they ever needed." (siskokidd).
@Satanic Panic Fun and Games I totally agree it's in the psychedelic/acid rock genre, but not as much as Pink Floyd's first two albums I think. I see that, but I still refer to it as progressive rather than psychedelia (with all due respect to Steve) which to me is more like Careful With That Axe Eugene or Set the Controls For the Heart of the Sun kind acid rock. It has elements of both. Believe me, as I knew several acid heads, they considered Pink Floyd the best in that psychedelic department years before Yes was noticed, and thought Yes was milder by comparison. But they still loved Yes! Tripping or not! LOL! BTW, have you seen them in concert? I missed their early tours in the 70s, but finally saw them in 1998 and I have to say, they were excellent live. In fact, played mostly songs from their early four big studio albums. And as that commenter said that I can confirm, so close to the studio work made it amazing to hear. ✌️😎
YES are the Kings of Prog Rock. They have about 11 EPICS (15+ minute pieces of music) and MANY other great pieces of music too (from 35 seconds long to 12+ minutes), but I recommend you begin at the beginning with the first song on their first album and go through their catalog in order. See where they started and how they changed. It's a journey unlike any other, with tons of lineup changes, an eventual reunion of everyone except the original guitar player (not sure why he wasn't included) followed by more lineup changes and lots of variety and styles of music along the way. I think you'll greatly enjoy the journey.
Their first song is called 'Beyond and Before', but everything on their first 2 albums is under 7 minutes in length, just so you know 🙂
As the first Yes song that you hear, you've chosen a "hard piece of work" ;-) I suggest you not start with the "masterpieces" right away. There are 2 interesting songs on the album "Big Generator". "Final Eyes" (super nice and atmospheric) and "Shoot High Aim Low" (a bit dark)
If you gonna go in, - go hard. - starting with one of their greatest ever works is the best place to begin, absolute classic Yes, the tracks otherwise mentioned are pale entities in comparison - almost a different band really - although the axis of Squire and Anderson is still in place.
@@alanbiggs9306 Good advice. The Rabin era was a different band. Ironically it had just as many Original members as THIS version(3), though I doubt Tony (with a K) contributed all that much initially.
Classical music on rock instruments. Interesting and...
You started with Yes with one of their most complex songs; they have many shorter, more accessible songs, their most famous one is ROUNDABOUT which is also well known in a JoJo meme. I would then listen to Heart of the Sunrise and also Siberian Khatru.
Something else that dude
By YES listen to Heart of The Sunrise, South Side of The Sky, Sound Chaser The Gates of DeliriumTo Be Over Future Times/Rejoice and Awaken
Hey! New to your channel. Great reaction! If you like this song try “Awaken” by Yes! You will absolutely love it!
When this first came out on CD in the early 1980's, I rushed out and bought it. Then in the early 90's when this remaster came out, I rushed out and bought it and gave away my old copy. Big mistake! When the guitar comes in at the beginning of "I Get Up, I Get Down", it blasts the volume. I thought I was having a heart attack when I first heard it. Then there's what we used to call "rumble" during the quiet parts as if it were being played on a cheap turntable. Why all these reviewers use this awful remaster is beyond me. If you want to hear it as it was originally recorded and cleaned up, use the Steven Wilson mixes:

The music is too beautiful for this garbage sound.
Welcome to the wonderful world of progressive rock, the fusion of all genres. Think rock opera. But in an opera the characters come and go, sometimes to return. In progressive rock the characters are the themes.
That's the purest version of progressive rock. :-) It's all about progression/transitions. No, not really. It's about quality music. :-)
Was this your first Yes song? Not a gentle introduction. But an amazing composition
@ 'Nothing is the same', Grand Funk; & sins of a good man's brother, @

there are so many peices of by from this group. both long and short tracks ... why don't you try things like "A Turn Of The Century"? Why not "Yours Is No Disgrace"? "Starship Trooper?" Why not "Hearts"? or ...other long ones ? "The Revealing Science of God"? "Ritual"? "Into The Lens"? "Awaken"? More Rock? MOre Classical? Which "direction you prefer"? Just Ask, I am here ;)
The first 3 or so minutes are just so hard to listen to it's just jumbled up garbage but from the middle to the end is just fantastic
Must drop all expectations of what you think music is and simply take it in--very unlikely that many will like this even after multiple listenings--but it is TIMELESS and perhaps eventually.............
if it's your first exposure to YES, you should listen to a song that clearly shows how great they are , not this, someone is an idiot to steer you to this first, Try "Long Distance runaround" or "Roundabout"
The first part is, shall we say, "self pleasuring" and the rest is not a lot better. Yes has some great songs, but this is not one.
its a work of genius
When YES songs are ranked, Close to the Edge is ranked #1 in almost every poll. You clearly do not understand the music of YES. This is one of the greatest pieces of music ever written.
@@martinreed5964 YES, it is.
You guys might be right. It just did not work for me.
@@bradmossman7201 oh that's perfectly fine. Not everyone likes it. Glad you enjoy some of their music.
