I've said this many times. You are the BEST at explaining the precise ways how to things. Holy cow. You explain the most minute details. Incredible. Great job and I'm glad I found your channel. I look forward to any videos you have regarding ram trucks. Keep up the EXCELLENT work. Chrysler Corp should hire you as a training consultant.
+Rich Pysz Many thanks Rich! The videos wouldn't mean anything with out the support of viewers such as yourself. Only I could take 30 minutes to describe a 5 minute repair lol. As far as Chrysler....they got a lot more people smarter then me teaching and wouldn't be able to hold a candle to them. Would be nice to one day get out of the bay and not have to worry about the hours I need to turn. Who knows what the future offers. In the mean time I will keep making videos and helping people out. Thanks again Rich!
I searched tailgate falling down and found this great video. My truck is an 04 ram but I thought maybe I could learn something from this one anyway. This is a Very well-detailed instructional video. I learned valuable info from it.
Please don’t take offense at this minuscule bit of constructive criticism. I found the repetitive finger counting of the two bolts needing to be removed a bit boring. But for the valuable information, this was more than tolerable. Thank you again.
Wow, you did a great job breaking that repair down and clearly explaning it.
RAM did a recall, the problem persists. Will take it back to the dealer, and at least I'm armed with knowledge this time. Thanks for the info, please keep broadcasting!!
It's happened to my 2016 twice, last week and today. Scared the hell out of me. I have a tonneau cover so looking in my rear view mirror didn't tell me anything. I only realized it when backing up and looking at my rear view image. I was looking under my bumper! Under warranty and RAM is paying! Thanks for educating me so that I have some ammunition going in!
Glad to share the knowledge. Thanks for watching and for the comment. Subscribe and check out my other videos as well.
I drove for 30 minutes with a box loaded front to back with tools and a 5ft ladder swinging around on my tailgate, had everything packed so tight that I didn't lose anything, but I'm sure the sight of the ladder sliding around on my tailgate made drivers behind me nervous 😓... i'm surprised nothing fell out. The tonneau being down is what kept me from noticing. When it fell I remember thinking "i didn't see any potholes there..." looked in the rear view etc.. when your tonneau is black and.your tailgate spoiler cap is black, well... a quick glance and I didn't notice.
It's been repaired since but now I look in the rearview checking for my spoiler cap haha
You went over every detail so thoroughly a blind person could do it. Great instructions.
Nothing like taking 30 minutes to describe a 5 minute repair haha. I just try to cover all the items I think that people might ask about. Thanks for the cool comment and for watching!
Never seen someone so motivated on spending their time to help others by posting so many awesome videos on how to do it yourself and learn how to fix your own vehicle. THANK YOU and God bless, we need more of you out in this world.
Many thanks Victor. I sometimes get stressed out with the time it takes to make these videos and finding the time to do it as well. Its comments such as yours that put that motivation in me to keep making the videos. Its when you hear from the viewers that you find how much these videos actually do help. I am just glad that I have the opportunity to do this and that people like yourself watch these videos and are able to save money and get your cars/trucks back on the road. Again....many things for those comments, it was just what I needed.
This guy is the best video mechanic on the planet.....
Wow.....now those are some kind words! Many thanks Dave for that feedback.
2015 Ram, just started to happen. Can see the latch locks actually move when fob lock is pressed. Unfortunately and of course, this happened while I am out of town with no access to my tools! I heard you mention disconnecting the lock cable, going to try that for a temporary fix. Thanks for taking the time to do this video, it is a great service!
Glad to let others know the issue and the fix. Thanks for finding the video and for the comment. Make sure to subscribe
My 2017 Ram 1500 started doing this shortly after I took delivery of the truck. Brought it to the dealer and was told that it was the Line-X that was added to the truck bed, not allowing the tailgate to close all the way. I shaved off an 1/8" of each rubber stopper and it made no difference. Called the dealer and was told that since I added the Line-X, this voided the tailgate warranty???? Thought I'd look online to see if anyone else had this problem. Found this video (thanks a ton, by the way). Ran outside to the truck pulled the access cover and found the broken tab. I then drove to the dealer to show them that this was not a Line-X problem, it was a latch problem.......they agreed and are now going to replace the locking actuator under warranty. Thanks for saving me the cost of having to replace it on my own! If it happens again and the truck is out of warranty, I'll weld a tab on there myself....
I love how you basically showed them how to diag the issue lol. That was priceless and in the end they ate their own words. The thing is that the tech has the ability to check with chrysler to find the same info I have and see the cause.....they just didnt do much more checking then to stop and say oh its the bed liner. Glad in the end it got taken care of. Thanks for the info and for following the channel. Make sure to subscribe
You should get them to replace those rubber stoppers you shaved down too, bloody dealerships man, full of excuses, I brought mine in when it happened the second time and they replaced the actuator, no issues since.
Very clear and easy to follow, without skipping little details that can cause frustration. thanks
Your welcome Keith. They just announced a recall on this so be on the look out for it in a few months.....I hope.
Good stuff! Having this issue with my 2017 Ram. Back to the dealer!
Thank you. Sorry for the delay. Just make sure to have them check in the Chrysler info for the star case related so that they understand what is going on.
Thank you very much for the video. My truck is a 2016 Ram 1500 and it just started doing this a few random times within the past 2 months. I could not figure it out and the dealership said they have never heard of such an issue with the tailgate just dropping while driving. Checked my tailgate lock actuator and found the 90 degree tab broken off (just like you said). Going to bypass it by unplugging the power while I get a replacement. (Maybe put a little JB Weld under the tab of the new actuator for added strength so it won’t happen again). Thank you again for your great video. 😃👍🏼
Most dealers should have come across this already. But then again who knows. Last time I checked they went to back order because they have asked for all those currently in stock at the dealership. Typically that means theres an issue with that part and they are going to replace it with another. I had one come on the shop this morning....did the same thing and unplugged the actuator connector for now. Thanks for watching and for finding this video. Subscribe and check out my others.
David
Thank you I have replaced 4 of these crap locks. I would have never guessed this was the problem. I was carrying lumber and it broke I thought that was it another time plywood laying on tailgate. Very poor design. Great video very informative. Finally I know
where the problem is.
Thank you so much!
Jack
Your welcome. I can bet that first time it happened....it was a scary thing. Glad to see that the video is helping people understand what the issue is. Thanks for watching and make sure to subscribe
Awesome video! I had this issue on my ‘15. Replaced the module under warranty. It drove me nuts when it started happening. Thanks for explaining exactly what is going on here.
Thanks Tom......appreciate the info on how you had the same issue. Glad that it got taken care of.
Glad I saw this, I am taking my 2016 into the dealer next week for this very problem. Maybe I'll show them the video lol
Thanks Joe for watching it.......them spending the time to watch it most likely wont happen lol.
Excellent video! Have the same frustrating problem with the tailgate dropping. Gonna work on it this weekend thanks to your video.
Thanks so much for making all of the video's. You have helped me so much and saved me a ton of money. Please keep them coming!
As long as you keep watching I will continue to make more videos.
This is an awesome instructional video! I don't have a pick up.....but am lurking and couch shopping for hopefully late 2018ish. Your instructions are clear........videography highlights the entire procedure......and the video removes just about any question you could have about the procedure. It is tempting to sneak over to my neighbors truck and practice the procedure in the middle of the night!
campingalan 😂You ain't right! 😂. If the cops show up.....I don't know anything, I was sleeping. I have been reading and replying to all the comments on this video and I have to say that I am a bit taken back. The response has been amazing. I do a lot of videos and for some reason this one has taken off like a rocket. The support has been amazing and I can't say thank you to you and all the other viewers enough! I have the best subscribers and viewers!
Well done. Thank you very much for this clear video.
Local dealer can't find the cause of the problem on my truck . I think I will show him your video . Thanks for posting such a clear and concise diagnosis and fix solution to this common problem .
There is what they call a STAR case for this issue that they can check into as well....the number is S1623000022. Mention this number and the word "STAR case" and that should be enough for them to check into it further. Thanks for the comment and make sure to subscribe
I been to the dealer 4 times already they can't find the problem.. on my ram rebel....it sucks
Guy at my work had the same problem , he went to the dealer . It was covered . Your video is excellent !! I don’t own a truck but when I saw the title I had to check it out . 👍
Guess the title falls under click bait then. Wasn't attempting that but glad it caught your attention. Its always best to have a heads up on issues then to be surprised when they happen. Thats why watching all the videos....even the ones that dont apply to yours is a good thing to do. Thanks again for watching and for the info.
MotorCity Mechanic I wouldn’t call it “ Click Bait “ It’s great information that I can share with my co - worker . ThankYou !
Mr. Worf Thanks for spreading the knowledge!
Very useful! Thanks for taking the time to make this.
I appreciate the time you spend watching and for the great feedback. Thanks Gowan and make sure to subscribe!
You explain things very well, thanks
Appreciate it Nelson!
I have a 2013 Ram which had that problem so I just unplugged it. This video was awesome you explained every detail to correct the problem.
Thanks Jim. I am so use to having a truck with no locking tailgate that it wouldnt affect me one bit to unplug it if needed. Then again I would probably weld a piece on.....thats just how I am haha. Appreciate the comment and for you watching as well!
What a great how to video ! Well edited, great closeups.
Many many thanks! Glad to see that the viewers such as yourself appreciate the time that goes into these videos. Alot of time is spent getting those angles and viewers.....it make as a 5 minute repair that 30 minutes or more to film. Thanks again and enjoy the rest of the weekend
Great tutorial!
+wyattoneable Many thanks my friend!
Damn man, you really made a well informed, informational video. Thanks!
Thanks John. Appreciate you watching it. Make sure to subscribe!
Outstanding information, excellent presentation
Many thanks! Appreciate you watching and make sure to subscribe.
Great vid, as usual. Real nice Year One -Gen One NEON in the background. Best to you and yours.
Many thanks Ray. Yeah that Neon is an RT ACR......grandfather to the SRT4.....no where near the same but the closest thing back them. Appreciate you watching and for the kind words
Dang! That was very well thought out and presented video. I'm a GMC guy but clicked on out of curiosity. Nice job!
+Rombo Appreciate you stopping by and checking the video out. Owners of all brands are always welcome. Many thanks on the cool feedback.
great info, the dealership in Anderson,sc said they've had no complaints,I call bs,an they'll be seeing this.thanks
I am actually located just outside of Augusta Georgia so we arent that far apart....not next door but still not a days drive. They may not have come across it because I have only seen 2-3 at the most myself. But none the less....there is a "STAR" note about it as you saw in the video. That should be enough for them to take care of the issue. Appreciate you watching and for the comment. Subscribe and check out my other videos as well.
Great video! Detailed and clear! Thank you
Your welcome and thanks for watching Rob. Dont forget to subscribe if you havent already.
Thanks for the Vid.
This helped alot on my 2017 1500 sport here in the UK were there isnt much dealer back up.

Very professional video.
Thanks man

Your welcome Colton. Make sure to watch my latest video covering the recall related to this issue as well.
Thanks you for the info.
Always happy to help. Make sure to subscribe.
Great video!
Many thanks Daniel! Appreciate you watching
had this issue with my 2015 sport. took 3 times for dealer to fix they adjusted the posts where latch catches before finally changing the assembly. What a PITA!!! I never knew tailgate was down until in reverse (camera looking at ground) because I had DEEzee tailgate assist strut for soft opening of the tailgate
Sorry it took them so long to find the issue. There are processes that they should have followed that would have led them to the same thing I found that Chrysler put out explaining the issue and tell what to look for. Glad in the end its fixed. Appreciate the info and for the comment. Make sure to subscribe!
One of the best explanation videos I've seen! Just starting having this issue on my '16 RAM 1500. First time thought I'd dropped the driveshaft. Second time thought I was rear ended. Called dealer and they had no idea but said to bring it in so they could take a look. Going to have them view this video and then see if I have the same issue (which I am sure that I do). Just subscribed to your channel as well.
Its one of those issue that I didnt even know about until a few months ago. After a bit of quick searching I found the info and then verified the issue. Hopefully they narrow down your issue and take care of it. Thanks for watching and for having subscribed!
So the dealer replaced the entire latch mechanism under warranty and haven't had a problem since. Thanks again for the great explanation. Really helped describe it all to the dealer.
Awesome! Glad it was taken care of and no more having to deal with that issue. Appreciate the update!
Thank you,Good info.
Your welcome sir. Thanks for watching and make sure to subscribe
Impeccable presentation, sir! All how-to's should be presented just as well! The world may very well become a much simpler place.
merlin5.4 That comment pretty much made my day! It's always cool to read people thoughts about the videos. As time has gone by, I have tried to step up my game and improve on the quality. I always say that if your giving me your time watching my videos.....then the least I can do is try to make it the best video I can. Many thanks my friend.
Great video Dave, this problem started with me about three weeks ago. Thought I had a ghost in the machine everytime the tailgate popped up. Now I know it's a simple pin. Part on order, I'll fix it soon. Thanks again!
I keep hearing more and more of this issue especially at the dealership while speaking with the service writer and customers come in talking about it. Glad to see that the info is making its way out there. Appreciate the comment and for you watching. Make sure to subscribe and check out my other videos.
My Truck is a 2015 3500 model that has very trouble free for the last years but, this issue started as soon as I was leaving on a long trip. Of course it popped many times. Very frustrating-
I can imagine that being an issue for sure.....its very violent when it happens.
Great tutorial and explanation!
Many thanks! Have a great weekend and make sure to subscribe
Great job on another tutorial. Now I feel like buying a newer Dodge Truck just to fix the tail gate (Y)
Just go find a neighbor with one and fix theirs haha. Thanks for watching Todd!
thank you!!!! answered my question first go.
Perfect! Glad you found the video and watched it. Appreciate the comment as well about it. Thanks for watching and make sure to subscribe if you havent already.
Ram has issued a recall for this problem.
Vehicles recalled:
• Ram 1500 light-duty pickup trucks with 5-foot-7-inch or 6-foot-4-inch beds and power locking tailgates built at Ram’s Warren, Mich., plant from Oct. 8, 2014, through Dec. 15, 2017, or at Ram’s Saltillo, Mexico, plant from July 31, 2014, through July 31, 2017.
• Ram 2500 heavy-duty pickup trucks with 6-foot-4-inch beds and power locking tailgates built at Ram’s Warren plant from Aug. 25, 2014, through Aug. 2, 2017.
• Ram 3500 heavy-duty pickup trucks with 6-foot-4-inch beds and power locking tailgates built at Ram’s Warren plant from May 30, 2014, through Aug. 2, 2017.
The problem: According to NHTSA, a tab inside the tailgate’s power lock assembly may fracture. The agency says this may potentially result in the tailgate “inadvertently falling open at any time.”
The fix: Although Ram has not offered details on the repair, the company says it will fix all affected vehicles free of charge to owners.
Yeah we have been talking about the recall in the comments down below. I hope to eventually do a follow up video covering it when more info becomes avail
So smart to have an access panel. My GM truck did not and it was a royal pain to work on the tailgate latch assembly.
Yeah I bet it would be without the access panel. Always glad to see that they think about being able to service certain things if ever needed. Thanks for watching!
great instructional video. so many people make it about them.
information very clear and easy to understand
Appreciate you commenting about the finer details. Many thanks and dont forget to subscribe
@ 9:04 I could swear i saw Gene Simmons of KISS hiding in that plug .
I'm thinking Deadpool but I could see Gene in there as well lol. Its funny what people pick up on lol. Thanks Ryan for the laugh and for making me re-watch my own video. Dont forget to subscribe
Good vid. Hadn't heard of this one but been out of the Mopar field a few years now.
Its not as common as other issues but it does happen. Most techs diag the issue wrong or say nothing is wrong without knowing what to look for. Thanks for watching Justin and for the comment as well!
Very clear explanation. Too bad such a late model 2016 Ram truck has this issue. I hope the dealer knows what to do, I'm saving video. Many Thanks.
No brand is perfect by any means and issues will come up. I would hope that the dealership would be aware of this issue by now. If not then feel free to show them the video and school them at the same time. Thanks for watching and make sure to subscribe
I needed this... I've almost my tools too many times.
Does your truck have the recall U74? It addresses the issue an fixes it for free.
@@MotorCityMechanic I need to check. Funny thing is I use to work for DOT here in DC.
D Rell there’s a good chance yours might be under that recall. Great app to have is MyCarFax”....it’s free and also notifies you went recalls are announced for your vehicle. Plus you can see all the service records from previous repairs
Love otc tools.
They do make sure great tools for sure.
Great video. My truck has the locking tailgate, but no problems as of yet. Now I will know the cause should it develop a problem. Thank you!!!!
You will know the exact cause if it ever does happen now. Thanks Joseph for finding and for watching the video. Make sure to subscribe
I had this happen twice, both times, I was rolling away from where I was parked, and the gate fell down before I reached the speed where it auto locks. Took it back to the dealership, they said it was a faulty actuator and replaced the actuator, no issues since. FCA sent out the recall notice regarding the gate issue maybe a week later.
Just got a phone call from my dealer notifying me of a recall on my truck for this issue.
Yeah they have moved on to phase 2 of the repair and another group of trucks will get the repair. They break it down into groups to manage to flow of people coming if to have it done. Thanks for the comment and make sure to subscribe.
You said it exactly correct when my tailgate drops it feels like somebody hit the back of my truck. The dealer said that they fix this problem but it keeps doing it every now and then.I have the factory spray-on bedliner inside my truck and can't see anywhere where they cut around that tailgate access panel to install that piece.
I don't think they actually did the repair he the mechanic. just signed off on it.
What a great channel. NRA, Reload Magazine, Thunder Ranch and Motor City Mechanic.
+TheBuddy1939 Wow.....that's awesome man. I have always said that I have the best viewers/subscribers! Just glad that I can help people and that all of you are welling to watch and learn. Many thanks!
Great video David. Thanks for the detailed instruction on correcting this issue. My 2017 has not done this, but if it does I will push the dealer to replace under the bumper to bumper warranty. I can imagine the consequences of someone going down the road and losing a load of golf clubs and balls when it pops open on a turn... what a sight that would be. Not many golfers driving 2500's though. I haul my competition dogs in kennels back there, and training gear, it would be a bad scene if mine popped open. I may pull the cover to check and see if mine has the tab. Should be the only thing the Ram factory is putting out now - right?
Yeah that could be a nightmare depending on whats in the bed. I bet a few had to change their pants the first time it happened......its a trick we play on the new kids lol. Scares the hell out of them the first time. Not sure I would think its funny when it happens with a load of scrap metal or something that could come out the bed. Thanks again for watching.
Great information think I should share this with the service department at the dealer as I took my truck in for this issue and they told me one they doubt they will find anything and the they had the truck several hours to tell me the couldn’t replicate the issue and that the after market bed cover is what is causing my tailgate to fall
Tell them there is a star case on checking this as per the video. Some are open to things like that and others are like...."who are you to tell me how to do my job". Just depends on the person. Thanks for checking it out and for the comment. Make sure to subscribe!
Go to a different dealership, sounds like that one's over populated with lemmings..
If this is common there should be a recall. I call this a safety problem. I can vision 200 lbs of concrete falling onto a highway at 70 mph in front of PT cruiser!
Mike Shelly it's not that common but I felt it was something to point out just incase it did happen so that the wrong parts aren't replaced and money wasted
Mike Shelly im having problem with tailgate on a 1500 scare its gonna sever or take my kiddos arm or head off.. its scary
I'm sitting at the dealership now bc mine has been doing it and it did it 2 weeks ago while I was towing a trailer. When I went to the bank the girl at the bank asked me if I was going to be able to make it through with the trailer. There was nobody at the bank so I told her I'll just back it up. I can back a trailer on a dime and when I backed this one up and whipped it around all of the sudden it felt like I hit something. I pulled forward and got out and looked and my tailgate was damaged. When I just pulled in here I looked at the girl that walked out and I said I'm not paying for this. This is yall's fault and it is all over the Internet that there's a problem and now we know what the problem is thanks to this video. Awesome work
Mike Shelly it is recalled now, ours has the same problem, 3 to 6 months to get the part
Had my box jam packed full of tools with my tonneau cover down, gate fell down and i didn't notice it due to the tonneau, drove for about 30 minutes to get home, backing into my spot i run into the concrete barrier and I get out to check because i shouldn't have hit anything yet... tail was down, with a 5ft ladder partially on and off laying on the gate, all my tools were tightly packed in that I thought it was the reason for the gate falling down, so I made sure not to over pack the box front to back and it happened again where i damn well knew it wouldn't be my fault, brought it back to the dealership, they said it was a faulty actuator and replaced it, have not had troubles since. But about a week after the fix they issued the recall.
One thing I've noticed too since having this issue repaired is that when you lock your truck, you shouldn't be able to hear the actuator locking the tailgate from about 15-20 feet away, that was the distinct change that I noticed once they replaced the faulty actuator, where as before i'd lock the truck and with the horn beeps, I could hear a chh-clunk sort of noise from the faulty actuator, new one is much quieter too. Might be a warning sign of the failure.
MetalPurist they have always seems loud to be....big hollow metal can, can’t help but hear things. I might need to listen to it more often to see if I can notice a difference
Long story short, I was moving from Florida to Seattle in my 15’ Ram 1500. Had a bunch on stuff in the bed. My dog kept hitting the unlock/lock button, thinking nothing of it. I’m doing 80mph and my tailgate drops open, thinking I just got rear ended. Lost all my stuff on the highway. Luckily no one was behind me. Would have been bad
I can see that being an issue for sure. That first time it happens, it will scare the hell out of you as you very well know.
Great explanation and detailed video. BTW my truck is doing this now as well. It’s a recall now though. I was told parts will be available “maybe” around October. I’m going to go pull my access panel and look, probably will disconnect the connector until Ram decides to fix my defective truck
Yeah a recall has been issued. Still too early to find out what the procedure will be and when the items might be avail. The best thing if your having issues is to disconnect the connector at the actuator as you mentioned until the recall comes out. Thanks for watching and for the comment. Make sure to subscribe
MotorCity Mechanic yep I checked mine yesterday and the little tab is broken off. I disconnected the electrical connector for the time being. Hopefully my tailgate will stay up while driving around for now until I can get Ram to fix it. Btw I like that torx kit in your video. May have to pick one of those up
Joseph Ellis it’s a sweet bit set. I love them all being in one kit. Bulky and not for a tool cart but handy as hell to have. If you do....use my amazon link in the video description. It’s around $60ish I believe. You won’t have any further issues with that tailgate now that it’s disconnect. Thanks again for watching and for replying back
My dealership replaced the whole assembly for me, still have to take part in the recall, but for now It's a how long will this one last sort of deal
MetalPurist Glad they took care of it. Will have to see what the actual repair will be for the recall once they announce the procedure
Good video seems like there would be some easy fix for that
I could see a possible fix as well. Might be something I need to look into next time I get my hands on a broken one.
Thanks for your quick responses. Love your channel and your detailed videos. Only one other question for you. My current ram and even brand new one I looked at today has issues with headliner sagging/ Velcro coming undone at sunroof. Poor design. Do you have any tips to keep it stuck up in place???
Thanks MCM; this has been making me crazy! I imagine it's covered by warranty?
It will be covered under the basic warranty 3 year/36,000 miles. Always happy to share the knowledge
Great vid and how to
I just did mine but welded new piece in if you half good with tig you can di this no problem
Thats pretty much what I would do on mine if I had the same issue. I'm cheap like that haha. Thanks for the info and for watching.
Great video happened to me one time don’t need it to happen again. Disconnecting the electrical harness for now. Hope that solves it and it never happens again.
Thanks for watching and that certainly will prevent it from happening again. Make sure to subscribe and check out some of my other videos when you get time.
Thanks for the video. Maybe Ram will issue a recall since this is a safety issue and if enough people complain to NHSTA.
You never know....anything is possible.
Very clear and concise, David. Thanks. So far, so good, no issues with my 2015. Were there many or only a few that did this? And was it a recall issue? Thanks
Mic Tod™ Not very common....personally seen only one but a few have commented on the video saying it happened to them. Not a recall.
Because there's a recall on them 😁 mine received tailgate damage from it. Wonder if they'll fix or replace it also...?
I was like...I knew I put that up. Thought I was crazy until I got the recall.
And I have done a video on that as well......lol. What came first....the recall or the video. The video in this case. Thanks for watching.
This is official now. NHTSA Recall #
18V-486 - “Safety Defect/Non Compliance Description and Safety Risk: The tailgate actuator limiter tab within the power lock actuatory control assembly may fracture allowing the lock rod control bracket to over-travel which may pull the lock rods and release the latches, potentially resulting in the tailgate inadvertently falling open at any time An unintended opening of the tailgate while driving may result in a loss of unrestrained cargo from the truck bed while driving. Lost cargo may create a road hazard to operators and occupants of other vehicles, and can cause such vehicles to crash”
Yeah we have been commenting about it in the comments below. I hope to do a follow up video explaining more about this.
Hey David great videos
I wondered if you have any helpful tips on keeping ram headliner pushed up tight around sunroof I have a 2018 sport and my 2015 had same issue. Push it up heat Velcro attach then after few minutes it lets go. Too much downward pressure
itzmillertyme I have never come across this issue so far. Not too sure what might work. I will need to pay more attention to the next one that comes in to see if I can think of anything that might work. Thanks for asking and make sure to subscribe
Just had the same problem here in Germany!! Great Tutorial. Thanks for that! One question: what is the part number of the assembly that has to be exchanged??? Thanks for your kind support.
There are 2 different parts numbers. To be 100% sure I recommend contacting a dealership either online or by phone if possible and give them your VIN# and have them check to see exactly which one. Other option is email me the VIN and I will try to have my parts department check into it when they get time. The email is david@motorcitymechanic.com
Awesome Video David. I have a 2013 Ram 4x4 Laramie Longhorn. Owned since new. 29K Miles. For the past year I have had the Lock Unlock Random problem. No explanation. Go to bed Locked. Wake up Truck is Unlocked. Lately my Tailgate will unlock when I pull the release latch BUT refuses to lock again when I go to shut it. I cycle my FOB a few times for Lock and Unlock and it eventually shuts and locks. Know what to look for now with the possible missing metal tab. Thanks. JP
My 2016 ram sport has started doing this. Not sure if the warranty covers this or if I need to use this video. Not mechanically inclined but a very good video all the same
It would be covered under the 3 year/36,000 mile warranty. Anything over that will be out of pocket. Thanks for watching and appreciate the comment as well. Dont forget to subscribe Chris!
I really like the two door neon in the background. I remember when they first came out and I were very nice car. What are your plans for it?
It’s my A to B car. It’s an RT ACR neon which is the grandfather to the SRT4 Neon that I really wish I had. I got this one during a trade of an old motorcycle which wasn’t worth much. It’s my stick car so when I want to shift gears....and want something smaller to drive other then my Mega can dually, it’s the one I jump into. I keep it at my shop as a back up.
I still have my 98 dodge neon rt. Mine is a 4 door with red and grey racing stripes .
You just dont see many on the road anymore.....mine being an ACR....it has 4 wheel disc.....fog light delete for brake cooling.....no other feature like rear defrost. But it does have a 6 speaker stereo and all 4 struts have adjustments for dampening. Basically is was a great road coarse starter car. Mine was abused and driven alot before I found it. Only paid $400 for it and had to do some work. It was a few months later that I ran the VIN and found out it was an ACR. Now it just sits.....need to do some more work or get rid of it.
A safety recall has been issued on my 2018 ram, but I’ve had it line x .the dealership won’t touch it now
Good video
On the other side why can't you tape the clip to the rod so it won't come out without replacing the whole unit for diy
Heres a different question, tpms sensors, ive been reading about them, most say to relearn on the truck with new sensors, just to drive the truck.
Or will they need a trip to the dealership for a reprogram?
Great video. I took my truck in for this recall today. The tailgate fell on my way home after getting it repaired. I opened the tailgate cover (which i could tell had never been removed) and saw that this metal piece is indeed broken off. I'm curious what their stopping block looks like, because I'm thinking the stealership did not install it.
I am working on that exact video for this weekend as we speak. I will show the part and actually install it so you will be able to tell if it was done or not.
I found a picture of the block that the dealer said they installed. It goes under the dust cover on the actuator. It wasn't in there. I wish everybody better luck with their dealer than I'm having.
Robert Berger Sounds like someone needs an ass chewing. I would call them back up or possibly even the Chrysler customer service line if not both and complain. I hate when techs dont do repairs/recalls and still get paid. We have heard new recalls to go recheck old recalls because of slack mechanics in the past. It makes my blood boil. Sorry you had that experience. Let me know what happens if you do call them back.
What do you think of the recall on the tailgates? Why did they not include the 8’ beds? Is it different? Thanks. Love your videos.
Its about time....not sure why not the 8 foot bed. I sent an email to someone I know in the company and waiting to see if they know anything. I need to do an update video talking about that recall so I need to piece together some info.
Great info. Does this happen on the other manufactures trucks too?
I believe the issue is only on the Ram truck so all other brands should be okay. Thanks for watching!

First off, thank you for all your awesome video's. I've learned so much about my `14 RAM and its Cummins from you. Now my comment. From looking at this carefully, wouldn't it be possible to fab a piece of metal that used the right mounting bolt to replace the broke actuator stop? It appears there is plenty of room to go under and up. Has anyone tried this? Thanks in advance.
+Robert Stein I'm sure it can be done some how. I know if it was mine....some fab would be on the menu. Looks like a small "L" bracket might work.
MotorCity Mechanic Looks like a good opportunity for someone to make a simple repair kit instead of replacing the whole works. You've already got a broken one, simple bent strap. I'll split the profits with you. :-)
haha....I dont think that the issue is common enough to make a good profit.
Great video. I have this problem with my 2016 1500 and would love to replace the part. I can't seem to find it for sale anywhere online, do you happen to have a link with anyone selling it?
First thing I recommend is to cal the local Dodge dealer and give them your VIN and have them look that part up for you so that its the exact part you need. Get their price and then also google the part number they give you online and see who else offers the part and what their price it. Usually its cheaper online because those dealers sell wholesale because they order so much more then the average dealer. Thanks for the queston and make sure to subscribe
Did he list part numbers for the replacement piece? Anyone know? I never got the recall but this has happened on my 2014 Ram 1500 4 times now. I came very close to damaging someones hood when I backed into a parking spot.
wait is it 13-17 like you said in the video, or 15-17 like it says in the title? never came across this issue (thank God) and I feel like if this would happen, the tonneau cover will hold it in place. I don't think I can put the tailgate down without opening the cover first
Hey David checked my 2016 Ram 2500 and metal tab is still present. I never have had an issue but want to avoid one so I disconnected the power plug lie you stated. Will my tailgate be more prone to open if I lock it manually.?. Should I unlock it manually while driving? I would like to just leave it locked all the time to prevent theft. Will leaving it in the manual lock position make it more prone to falling while driving. Thanks.
Once you disconnected the connector you should be fine. Its what I recommend for the time being until the recall repair is announced. Thanks for the question and make sure to subscribe
I have the same problem except on my 2012 ram 1500. Just had 8 sandbags fly out of my truck
Yeah, its really is a bad problem, I have had stuff leave the bed when tailgate drops...
I dont see alot of them but alot of viewers have mentioned it and then I eventually came across one that another tech replaced both latches which means they didnt check to see if Chrysler had any issues or fixes for the concern. I could see it certainly being an issue with you have stuff in the bed for sure. Thanks for watching Vince!
Does this include 2010 rams? My ram does this to.
Oddly enough when I opened the back panel of the tailgate to disconnect power to the mechanism I soon realized it would kill the backup camera. Upon further inspection I noticed there was a circular heavy foam pad cut out in the center and looped over the latch rod about midway from the lock to the latch. It looked out of place so I pushed it further down along the rail so there was more friction against the walls inside the tailgate surfaces. Seems to have done the trick for now but it is likely not a long term fix. Adapting some kind of friction plate on the latch rods/ rails may be a better solution than disabling the lock or affording a replacement. Needless to say it is a poor design to begin with.
So with this recall what happens when towing a trailer and the tailgate fell down, you thought it was the trailer just banging around, then you look and see the tailgate is down, get out and see that your tailgate is damaged?
What do you do if your till gate keeps popping open? But there's nothing broke on it
David, As noted below in another cooment, this problem is now a recall issue but not for trucks with the 8’ bed. Do you know why those trucks are not a part of the recall? Is the acuator somehow different in the 8’ bed tailgates? Finally, has your shop had any customers with the 8’ bed come in because of this issue. My truck has the 8’ bed and I tow a fifth wheel. If the bed were to fall down and I make a turn, the tailgate would hit the RV. Wondering if I should disconnect the power latch until this is all figured out. Thanks!
Yeah we know about the recall. I have no idea the reason the 8 foot isnt included. I dont remember seeing an 8 foot bed with the issue. I know I havent been paying attention because up to now it was anything I needed to know. But from what I do remember looking back....they all seemed to be the shorter beds. We dont get the specifics as to why one is and one isnt.
MotorCity Mechanic Thanks for the immediate response! If you do hear if anything regarding the 8’ box tailgate, will you let us know here ? Thanks again.
Your welcome. I will if I do. Thanks for following the channel
Super comprehensive video!! Is that your Neon and does it have the PT Cruiser engine?
Its actually the grandfather to the SRT4. Its an older R/T ACR....no turbos back then. She doesnt get driven much anymore. Use to be my daily driver. Great for road coarses but the close ratio trans hates the highway....it screams for another gear haha. Thanks for watching Bill and for the comment.
Bill Rimmer Hey I see you at SMA videos all the time lol
I used to have a Neon R/T (kinda an ACR minus the Konis). Lost count of how many times I went to upshift and the car was already in 5th!
Christopher Harry I do the same thing lol.....that baby screams for 6th. Mine sits parked for now. I need to get off my rear and do a few things to it. Might be time to say buy to it....just not sure
I had a '98 RT with stripe delete...great little car but I agree: so many times I was on the highway I actually pressed the clutch pedal down to shift and realized there were no more gears left :)
