TUTORIAL: Using UDIMs in Blender is this easy? Yes it is!

  • I love Blender...
...and as it develops more and more I have to pinch myself. Isn't this something I have used in Maya already? Or is it something that I used first in Blender? UDIMS are one of those things I cannot remember which software package I used them in first.
If you don't know, UDIMs are a way to allow you to have more texture space and multiple texture sizes on a model so you can add detail where you need it and use less where you don't. The sole of a boot? Not as important as the skin of a face, right? Well, that depends on whether the boot is hitting your full frame and the face is all the way back from it, but you know what I mean.
So your UV grid goes from 0-1, 1-2, 2-3 and so on both horizontally and vertically, right? Well, each of these square blocks has a number value which in turn can be added to your images so a colour map can have a bunch of images across a body, so one for an arm, one for a leg and so on... Naming conventions are like this:
figure_colour.1001.png - this could be the Body UVs,
figure_colour.1002.png - this could be the left arm UVs,
figure_colour.1003.png - this could be the right arm UVs
...and so on. Rather than jamming all of your UV's into a single 8K tile, you can spread it over 4 2k tiles. It's more efficient. And it's so cool to use.
Right, enough of this, take a look at the tutorial. It's not a long one and hopefully shows you what I'm trying to explain here.
    Take care, guys!

veryy veryyyyy useful tip that I never heard of before! I always thought they'd been given different materials so they could receive different textures! but with this method they're all handled in one single shader!!

Exactly! It was Weta during the production of The Lord of the Rings that one of the team realised they wanted a better way of texturing the crowds of characters. Now this method is used everywhere but predominantly in games. It's a very efficient way to texture

@@GENVFX cool history! the Lord of the rings crew were really innovative in many aspects! and the guy who knew it and shared it is even cooler ;) thanks a lot!

Jump to around 11:30 to get to how to load a UDIM file.

nice to see I'm not the only one chanting "L L L L..." when selecting stuff that way 😂

      I can't help myself! I also am a firm user of " R..X..90, no -90!" as well as "E...I...E...I..."! 😆

Ive never seen UDIMs at work. I cant say I understand them... but you've taken to Blender like a duck to water.

    Doesnt work for me.
Blender recognises that im trying to do udims. But all the meshes will come up with pink missing texture outside of the texture i chose

I watched introduction to the Mari and I've seen there about UDIMs. When I took a closer look, it's just blew my mind, why I didn't know that earlier when i tried to make complex texture? UA-cam never recomended me that.

This UDIM and Blender UVs in general are most convoluted shit i've ever seen in my over 15 years of modeling experience.

I think it's more from which direction you look at it. I know lots of Maya users who feel the same as you. I am a Maya user first, so I do feel your pain, but I also know Blender uses who feel the same way about Maya's Uvs

@@GENVFX Unfortunately, i have to work with Blender (among other 3d apps) on daily basis, and i can not justify using Blend for... well, anything. Esp, UV tools outside using addons is abysmall.

do you know a way to export the UDIM UV layouts to draw in e.g photoshop? I can only export the first tile for some reason... using blender 4.0

I'll take a look and see. I seem to remember you have to select the polygons to get them in a uvexport, that might be it

udim not showing in uv menu

As long as you have texture islands outside of the initial UV space [0-1,0-1] then you should see the Udim settings.

Same its not showing up in the View tab of the UV Editor viewport either... Did you figure out a solution yet?

@@jerrlc Yes when you go to the uv editor and click new image put the resolution you want and under where it says generated type there will be a box that says tiled. click the box so its tiled press ok then in the uv editor there is a side menu click it and go to image and there will be option for UDIM tiles click that and you will see 1001 at the side will be a + sign to add another tile or as many as you want
