GEN VFX - Hi there! My name is Gary Noden and I have been creating VFX animation and motion design for a looong time.
I finally decided, after having made tutorials in the past for the publication 3DWorld Magazine, that I would stick my toe back in the water of making new tutorials, but rather on UA-cam than on paper.
Hope you like my channel and decide to subscribe to get new bits and bobs about 3D from years ago that I still use, or new stuff. I'm still learning, so let's make sure you do too!

Why are my Custom Properties in Blender Broken?
I love Blender...
And the more I learn about rigging in it, the more I love it than I thought possible.
Yep, I love blender BETTER!!
Especially now I figured out why my rigs, for some completely unknown reason where always breaking.
As usual, it was not the fault of the software, but USER ERROR!!
I was making rigs, adding custom controllers, like sliders for prop animation, or a switch for an FK/IK arm and when it was linked into a new file the sliders were not opening up when I added the Library override to unlock everything...
WHY?
I could not fathom it, and then, without actually googling, I saw what I was not doing. But the fact that I even had to do this thing still amazed me.
Anyway, let's get to it. Watch and learn, my friends, watch...and learn from the doofus who thought he was breaking stuff.

I love Blender... Hi, yes, I know, I'm a freakin' broken record. I love Blender, I love Blender!!! Well, I do... But I used to love only Maya... Until I realised everything I wanted to do in Maya I could pretty much do in Blender. Model, oh hell yes! UV, deffo! Rig?! Indeedidido! Render? Actually that's FAR better in Blender, I mean by a mile. But there were still a few things that I wanted fro...

I love Blender... It's been a very important part of my career in the past 5 years, taking over from Maya and Modo in a big way. I recently used it to model and texture a sea creature for a TV show. Yes, really! I did do the fluid simulation in Houdini, but I did all of the rendering in Cycles. Blender for the win! When I was doing the sea creature, I had some textures that I needed to place sp...
Tutorial: Unlocking the true power of Linked Files in Blender

I love Blender... But I have been wondering for a while now how I can use a linked file in a scene. you see in a production, linked files don't just need to be something that can be updated. they also need to be, in many cases, animatable. And I don't just mean in location, rotation and scale. no, I mean if you have a rigged character with joints and controllers, you will need to be able to get...

AMAZING
You learn something new every day! Thanks for sharing!
The pleasure is all mine...it's one of those crazy things that you either know or you don't.
Your music is WAY too loud.
You're right, it is! Someone else pointed that out too not long after it came out, but as it's a popular film, I have had to leave it as it is. The rest are a lot better in terms of sound not long after this one was made.
Great tutorial. You give us the information in a fun and informative way, without waffling, and without assuming we're idiots who want to learn not only about the particle system, but also about how to open a file, or select an object, or some such thing that someone watching this video should already know. Very informative, and I'm viewing it using Blender 4, 2 years after you produced this. Thanks for posting. I will search out more of your videos.
Glad you like it, although, as you say it'll be defunct soon enough once they make it Particle nodes for real!
Thanks for sharing! Is it possible to do that with shape keys instead of displace modifier?
You know, I don't know. Why don't you give it a try!
blender's native made UDIMs are actual effing garbage. Premise: I modeled a cicada in Blender, created the UV map and scattered it in six UDIM tiles. Go to ZBrush, sculpt the fine details, bake the maps on the same udims the model came with go back to blender, plug the udim as clip and see only the first one loading. Unplug it and lose all the udims. Remake, shows nothing but pink in lookdev and when going to render mode (cycles gpu) the rest of udims show off scale and off placement on the rest of the body. Only the first udim loads. Versions: blender 4.0, 4.1, 4.2.
pickup the P8 with threadripper :)
I'll chat with my guy at Lenovo and see what he can do! Woohoo!!
Great Tutorial. Only issue I had is that when I rendered my cube there was a weird blank gray line under the square. it wasn't a plane (I don't think) but it's pretty annoying since I can't seem to find other's with the same issue Edit: Never mind I figured it out. I just had to move the cube above the floor plane as it was halfway into it.
Yeah.. that flipping cube! I do love it, but it should be SITTING ON THE XY PLANE!!!, not half way through it...
how did u make the cool cross guard :P
I did it in Sculpting mode, starting with a modifier subdivided cube- that I converted to a meth to give me real faces, not modifier ones - and then just lost myself in dyntopo and kept going until I ran out of time. I do love Sculpting, and I'm getting better all the time
Very good video, but what made me sub was the little personality displays that made me chuckle. :D
Ah, thanks!
Bro got the hidden gem! Thanks! free Palestine
Awesome !!!cheers
thanks!
Good video! I'm also a big fan of Natron. I used Natron as compositor for all the videos on my channel, and the video with the sun explosion was even created exclusively with Natron. But I won't be using it any more soon. It's become extremely unreliable, even though my PC runs on Linux and the NVIDIA driver is up to date. I think that's because it's not being maintained very often, which is sad. The Glow Node is constantly causing problems and I can no longer render projects when I use Natron's greatest strength, the Shader Toy and the Community PlugIns, with the GPU. And CPU rendering simply takes too long. Old data keeps getting stuck in the cache and the lens flare nodes, which I really need, make the Natron crash. Maybe it is an NVDIA related issue and it works better with other GPUs.
Couldn't agree more. I'm now using fusion in my free Resolve. Much bettererer.
Doesnt work for me. Blender recognises that im trying to do udims. But all the meshes will come up with pink missing texture outside of the texture i chose
I'm not sure why that's happening. That pink normally means you have an image texture node in your shader, but it hasn't been set to an image. Is check in the shader first.
@@GENVFX I got it fixed. Can't recall what the problem was tho. Wasn't that tho. I think it was a problem regarding naming conventions.
This is amazing, I watched about 20 videos where they couldn't explain cryptomattes properly but you explained easily. Thank you
Was just getting into texture painting. This video is perfect timing! Thanks.
love this!!!!!!! ❤
Ah, cheers!!
After watching your tutorial, I'm intrigued if there could be an interesting application of the Vertex Weight Proximity Modifier, for 3D Character Organic Rigging. I've already found plausible application in that sense for the Vertex Weight Mix Modifier (what I call "Dynamic Weight Paint"); unfortunately, it's a bit too restrict application. Maybe the Proximity holds more potential.
That would be cool!
I'm still learning geo nodes ,I have done other stuff in blender with sculpting, modeling and texturing but new to geo nodes and animation. I struggle with the end part of rendering out the animation trying to understand the correct settings, all the tutorials I have used never end up doing that part and end like you did in this video. do you have any information or settings I should use and what engine you rendered it in and how long it took to render it would be greatly appreciated
Sure! I'll do it as part of my next video!
@@GENVFX i have been trying to think how to approach doing a immune cell t killer touching a targeted cell and marking it then leaving, could geo nodes do this? any ideas or possible prompt for a tutorial for you
thank you for this. if I were to set a keyframe for the offset in the time settings and then bake sound to f curves. that should work to make the ripple animation only happen when it's reacting to sound?
In theory, yes. I would recommend plugging the f curve into the amplitude
terrible
hi I hope you don't mind me asking. When I used rigify. it worked well, but when I render my character. 2 images of the character are rendered at the same time. the pose mode character and the rest position character are both rendered together. How do I turn off or hide the rest position mode character not to be rendered? thank you for your help :)
Maybe you have two models, but one has its filters set to hidden in viewport yet still renderable in the renders
@@GENVFX OK Thanks I'll look into that :)
2 years later, you're a lifesaver! I attemtped to make a horse head with verticies but didint know what was polybuild and did everything manually💀I learned so much through this tutorial I feel like its all gonna be less scary and tedious tysm (,,oh its a little tanky top" xd)
That makes me so happy. I am soooo glad I was able to help you with your stuff! That's why I do these vids. It would be great to see what you've done, if you want o share. Thanks again!
The video is great but You sped up the part that I really wanted to take a slow closer look at 🤦♀️ now this just another sped making of a room, not entirely a tutorial is it?
I see what you're saying, but the tutorial was not necessarily about the actual loop tool or extrude - -which I basically all I was doing - but more about the actual process to using Fspy and the camera projection tool. I mean, I sped that bit up because it was just repeating the same process as the unsped up stuff at the beginning of the refining. But, maybe you're right, maybe I should have left it all in.
Hmm... tested this (blender 4.01) ... Nada... tried to follow exactly, and went over the settings in "sloMo", but must be missing something "crucial". But many thanks for taking the time and effort of making Your videos and sharing Your knowledge. Best regards. P.S. Just a thought/personal opinion (one that I "share" with many people doing tutorials). I personally believe that videos of this kind, showing "procedures" in a (rather crowded) GUI would be better served by being recorded in "lower resolutions" making the UI-elements larger, and the whole "procedure" easier to read. And as an "added bonus" they might even be possible to follow on a "smaller screen" such as a tablet or large phone... Best regards.
Hi there, and thanks for taking the time to give all the lovely feedback. I couldn't agree more about these videos needing to be in a smaller, more viewing friendly format. It's not as easy to do everything you want to explain that can be viewed on a smart phone without whizzing around the screen. Saying that, I might give it a try, to be honest. As to it not working in 4.01, I think I might have to check my process in there, I am currently still in 4.0 as I am in the middle of a project, but it might be something to keep a look at. Take care!
I’m using this process n 4.1 now with displacement as well as leveraging the weight attributes in the shader by way geometry nodes. EDIT: as far as the UI in the video, one guy I watch a lot has increased his font size a few points and I like that
What if i want cryptomatte on particles? A unique ID per particle?
If you are using instances, I assume you should have a cryptomatte per particle, but keep in mind that this can really slow down the usage of them in a compositing software, as if you have, say 2000 particles, each ID is stored in the image. I'd just try it and see what you get!
i wait for reply sir pls i hope you have time to explan
Hi there. I ran the same tutorial through again on Blender 4.0 and it all works fine, so it must be my terrible fast English that is the problem. All the expression info is the same as it was in the earlier version, but I just suppose that's maths for you. Perhaps you just need to make sure that your syntax is correct. Check that when you use any parentheses, that you have a pair, same with the quotation marks. So ("variable") is what you are typing Sorry I can't be anymore helpful. take care and best of luck.

hmmm. That could be the first and last frames being the same image. it does make it look like a click. If not, you it might be you need to smooth in the animation in the middle a bit more. Hope this helps.
I haven't tried this yet, but if I make changes to the file/animation to the Linked asset, for example, a destruction animation to a linked cube, or the linked cube being sliced, would it also affect the original asset?
Hi there, I'm not sure, to be honest. For that sort of thing, I would be more likely to build a duplicate of the final animation asset specifically for that shot, switching the asset out for the breakable one. As to modifiers, anything done to a linked file in a scene does not affect the linked object's base file.
been looking for this workaround for about 2 yearish ! so good thanks and can't believe its that simple :) just gotta work out how to cross this with tension maps and we are gold. any ideas?
I think so. You'll have a hell of a nodetree in the ShaderEditor, but you have to have all of your maps in the a chain of mixColor nodes, the factors of which are controlled by the animation bender, so as you do the animation, of, say, a smile, the power of the blend drives the factor of the mixColor that makes the tension map for a smile appear. I think a nice big drawn plan of which map links to which controller would be a good first step - you know, planning it before execution
Many thanks will do :)@@GENVFX

thanks!
that was brilliant
I know, right? It makes Blender almost perfect for multi-user projects where you update stuff as you go along.
Unless your goals are to stay inside only open source realm then IMO Fusion is a much better choice than Natron. Since Natron is a nuke copy, it could be only as much good as Nuke and nothing more than that and considering it's pretty much an abandoned software, you'd be better off using Fusion since the company Blackmagic is unlike most companies (Adobe, Autodesk) and against subscription. Features and stability wise Fusion is way ahead of natron. Unless you are using Natron because you wanna use Nuke in future to get a job in VFX, then you should just use the free NC version of Nuke.
Yes, I couldn't agree more. When I did that video, Natron were making updates. It appears that all that has ended. And out of the rest, Fusion is still the best free option.
Good video. I've seen other people use Library over-rides but using overrides in Unity scared me away from the Blender equivalent (which is a silly reaction in hindsight 😂). Are you going to go back to your Asset Library vs Linking video and do a version 2 in light of this library override knowledge?
I might have to, if this works with it, which it should...damn I hate being wrong...lol
@@GENVFX I’m not sure I’d wholesale use the Asset browser for linking anyway. I can’t keep my asset browser categories clean and organised. I need to delete everything and put assets back bit by bit.
Can you explain how to create a cable (using a Bézier curve ), the cable runs through a hole in multiple post. When I animate the post and move the post the cable needs to stretch and stay in a straight line between the post . Example - a cable controlling a multiple sectional crane arm.
I'll see what I can do
@@GENVFX thanks, I was able to work it out a couple of ways, using a single vert extruded and parenting to the bone, or a curve and the “Hook” modifier.'
Cool! Thanks. I was wondering how to lock or control the torso stretching. I can see only arms and legs do have those controllers.
Glad I could help!
It's like a tutorial from Ricky Gervais!😄
This could have been explained a lot less noisy. You are an obstacle to your own explanations. However, I thank you for publishing your process.
I'll take that as a compliment! Ha!
Can the displacement follow the exact geometry of the object? I am thinking of sand giving in to the weight of an object
Hi there. You can do your animation, then paint weights to match each print and then "dial" them in as the character steps in them, or you might find dynamic paint works better for you, tbh, as that way you set the surface to have that sand like strength and then use simple shapes that match the shape of the feet, attach them to your animated feet and this will deform the dynamic paint surface roughly correctly.
@@GENVFX thank you so much!! Will try that!!
5.22 minutes in, it was a group input you should have been looking for not a geo
When I made the video, I'm not sure group input was a node, was it?
Like your color scheme!
Me too! Ha!
That's the built-in theme 'minimal dark'
Blender does not need to do optimization of pipeline between software instead it just does stuff all together..and will be winner on that. you can use the composer and the video sequencer before pressing rendering... ;)
do you know a way to export the UDIM UV layouts to draw in e.g photoshop? I can only export the first tile for some reason... using blender 4.0
I'll take a look and see. I seem to remember you have to select the polygons to get them in a uvexport, that might be it
perfect explanation, ty
Glad it was helpful!
Pixar actually still uses and refines this technique even now. All three of their most recent releases use this as the primary animation technique.
