Love how you add extra to the lessons from your personal experience of flying Jeff! Really makes the whole learning process a lot easier, great work as always!
Really really funny thing! I watched your videos 4 years ago. Never tried X Plane again until this week. Bought X Plane 12..and noticed how I crashed when following their directions for landing etc. I went looking for tutorials and your videos just eased my frustration. Give me a sign if you're still around. Thank you!!
Thanks again for this tutorial. What you're explaining is what should be explained in the sim. When i tried this, after reaching Sisters Island, I simply turned to heading 035. I had to correct myself using the radar screen.
I mean it said most of what you needed to know in game and he added just a bit that wasn't required (which is why he scored so low). The only thing the game didn't tell us was how to actually set the new heading, or identify which gauges we needed to be monitoring, which Jeff did very well.
So I came to watch some gaming videos to get a break from studying my Avionics examinations. But instead, I'm learning stuff for my exam on a gaming channel hahahaha.
Yes, the instructor does do some wierd things in this flight lesson. But the major thing missing from this flight lesson is making the pilot find and enter the proper codes to fly this ILS approach. That's at least half the work, and the more obscure part for most who have never flown an ILS approach.
I am not a pilot and have never been to a school. Would you mind explaining how to find the codes and enter them on the nav screen please! I just started xplane11 but basically I would like to fully train myself this way.
@@gruanger they will be in charts I think. You enter the frequency listed on the chart for the VOR and listen to the morse code to confirm (if available). I'm not a pilot either nor do I have many hours in simulators, but another tutorial explained this. I think you tune using the radio stack on the right. I don't know the range of a VOR, but generally higher frequencies have less range.
"Are they gonna kill us? He said he had the airplane." Dude, you have me cracking up with these videos. I've flown these tutorials before and was thinking about the same thing every time! Spot on! LOL
Great video Jeff! I have been one of your subscribers for almost 3 years...... Keep going! Your videos are greatly entertaining and educational (flight sim videos) for people easing in into the life of simulators. Keep it up!
Thanks after doing this tutorial 4 times and watching two vor navigation videos i now know what “wait till the needle flips” means and can complete it. very cool
The best procedure is 1) tune identify and monitor 2) Turn to place the head of the bearing pointer under your heading 3) center the CDI and maintain it centered. Does this aircraft have a bearing pointer?
@@Ash_18037 VHF (Very High Frequency) Omni-directional Radio-Range. That's not very instructive. VOR is a directional radio signal. Aviation radios along with the VOR instruments can determine the direction toward (or away from) that signal.
Hmm I thought planes cpuld navigate on their own. Like cars or walking Imagine a VOR in every major and minor location in the city. Or any amount of infrastructure like that snd not just sign posts and billboards. I thought it was like a more complex sextant but instead of stars it used magnetic fields and some weird contraption for altitude So how did the bombers do it back in the day Isn't there a a slide rule computer (analog like a plastic scale) that they still make pilots do calculations with for their exam ? Il2s something something
Great video Jeff they are still getting better you should do a atc video because people can't understand them and can you please do a live stream for my summer car plz
Ok I know this is a late comment to this video but where do the numbers 295 and 035 come from? I cant see them anywhere on any of the instruments so I'm totally confused what that even means or how to follow it. I'm trying to learn as much as I can on a flight simulator while i'm saving up to go to a real flight school so any help is appreciated! Great tutorial btw, the x plane instructions don't explain anything very well so this has helped a lot!
Jeff did you find out what gave you that score? Is it a glitch or something? I'm trying to master VOR navigation and get about the same score... I don't think I am doing anything wrong either.
Same here. I've done this lesson probably thirty times and typically get around 50% or 60%. A couple of times I got in the low 80s, 82 at best. Those times I flew at quite a slow airspeed, basically always had the needle glued exactly in the center of the CDI, and intercepted the second radial super fast and accurately (staying at 35 till the needle moved, then moving toward it when it stopped). Honestly I think the lesson is buggy, or way too demanding for the score to be actually useful. Great videos, though, Jeff, really enjoy them. It's nice to hear you explain the concepts in more detail than the "flight school" does and you've got a good sense of humor too!
I’ve done this challenge dozens of times and can only get 71% still not passing the challenge… I’m not a pilot so makes me happy you got 45% … still picked up tips off you so thanks going to try again .
I find the way that X Plane randomly siezes control of the cokpit views and controls really frustrating. Also, weirdly, when control is returned, the Pitch Stabiliser is in the fulloy nose down position. Be sure to know where the keys are to return them to the mid position. It's a really difficult tutorial, especially for someone like me as a beginner with very little explanaton of what's happenning.
Still have no idea how to configure the instrument to A - Tell me where I am relative to the station (without cheating and using GPS), and B how to configure the autopilot system to automatically fly it once I set it up.
If VORs are going out of use, what is used to map waypoints for GPS navigation? RDB's? What will this mean for aircraft that are not equipped with GPS?
waypoints/intersections are completely fabricated now and used for RNAV (random navigation) I think this pretty much puts a solid foot down that airplanes will be required to have at least GPS for navigation. I have to say VOR's don't seem to be going anywhere as the FAA still favors them. They are being phased out slowly though.
Question: Is it wise to decommission all the VORs, or is the maintenance expense to prohibitive to keep them in service; even as a backup in case GPS fails?
As a flight simmer myself and ex online atc controller on a private network. In my view it's going to happen the chances of a complete gps failure are incredibly small the satellites are pretty well protected in their orbits they get minor impact damage so does any other satellite (just read what nasa says in documentaries etc) plus gps is also being improved rapidly and it will soon be even more accurate and pilots still have VFR as backup. In terms of cost as equipment gets older it does get considerably more expensive to maintain and if new technology is there that can do the same role and more then it makes financial sense ok in the short term it's going to be expense to install but it will be cheaper in maintaining for years to come eventually recooping install cost
I wouldn't say they are getting rid of VOR, they are still hugely popular. I have flown 1 plane with a GPS, but almost all planes have VOR, we have like 5 VOR's in San Diego. We have POGI, Mission Bay, Julian, Oceanside, and Tijuana. I guess that last one is in mexico but it is literally on the border and we use it all the time.
Hey i just saw two of your videos and insta subed, loved the explanation. Just a quick noob question from a lockdown player '=D. My Cesna tends to trim upwards all the time and i have to correct the trim all the time until goes to the horizon but it's really a pain in the ass and it seems that you don't have this problem, i'm playing the same lesson actually. True. Instead of writing paragraphs to describe a gauge they did not bother pointing an arrow.

45%??? That's some bullshit. You did it just like I was taught to do IRL 25 years ago.

Nice flying enjoy your 45% check ride ......lol
"Your school must've been 55% cheaper than most schools then!" - Laminar Research, probably
The best procedure is 1) tune identify and monitor 2) Turn to place the head of the bearing pointer under your heading 3) center the CDI and maintain it centered. Does this aircraft have a bearing pointer?
With no bearing pointer (like on a real RMI) check for a TO indication then center the CDI and maintain it.
This didn't tell us how to set the VOR frequency and identify. That's kind of critical.

How about telling us what VOR actually stands for? Even more critical. Yes I can use google, but this is a flight school for beginners.
