Another great video! One tip for people doing this, loosen the fill plug first. Just incase the drain plug is stuck. It would suck to drain it and not be able to fill it lol.
My 2003 C5 has about 150,000 miles. I am the 2nd owner. My father bought it new. Then I inherited it from him around 75,000 miles. I am 100% certain the diff oil is original. Your video has inspired me to do something about that. Thank-you for posting it! Well, here it is a few months later. I finally got around to changing the diff oil. Thanks to your video, I did not run into any surprises. The odometer reads just over 154,000 miles. Like you said, that smell is pretty bad!
Remember to remove your filler plug first. That way you don't ever get stuck with no oil because you drained first then stripped or had a issue with filler plug and couldn't remove it and now you have no oil in your rear-end.
I have a c6 Z06 2006, would I expect my plugs to be that accessible. I saw another video showing the fill plug where it was very difficult to access. Thanks for the video. You sure made it look easy. 😂.
Did the same thing within the first year of ownership. There is a lot of sliding contact between the ring and pinion gears and I have been told there is a fairly high sulfur content in the lube which accounts for the special smell. Also changed the gearbox lube which made a very noticeable difference in ease of shifting the manual transmission (almost as smooth as the manual trans on the Miata I used to have). Had some difficulty believing the owners manual which called for ATF in the manual trans.but did it anyway
FYI. After about 3 months of changing my differential oil using this same Royal Purple, I was getting a rubbing/grinding sound from the diff when turning. After some light research, I found I wasn't the only one and had to add Genuine GM Fluid 88900330 Limited Slip Axle Lubricant Additive - 4 oz. (Of course I removed 4 oz from diff first). Now all is well.

Glad I just watched this video. I just changed my diff oil with the same exact kind as you, except I didn't realize it had friction modifier already in it and added a bottle of my own :/ Luckily I haven't taken it out to work the fluid into the clutches so I'm just going to have to drain/fill it again.
Thank you Chris. That was a vital piece of information. Hope all is well out there. Getting very cold in Indiana an Michigan. Lol. I got to drive mine Saturday for a little bit. Its stumbling when I mash the gas. I had put stabile in it 3 months ago. I don't know what has happened. Ok take care.
I really need to get this done asap. I thought i had to pay someone to do this but you made it look really ez. Gonna do this while changing out my rear axles this weekend 👍🏻
Just had all my fluids changed. And replaced the AT4 pan with a B&M finned pan. Had the transmission cooling lines flushed. Nice low temps all around now.
You are right Chris!!! The smell is wicked!!! 🤮 But burnt transmission fluid like what was in my 1996 Ranger is even more gross. LOL!!! I toasted my original automatic transmission the other day, 556,079 miles on it and the original 4.0L engine. I am the original owner. I replaced it with one from a salvage yard. I almost lost it several times swapping them. 🤣 The engine still runs strong as the day it was new. The trans going bad is my fault because I towed an F-250 out of a ditch a few days ago that was WAY beyond my weight capacity.
I bought my C6 that was 8 years old with 6500 miles on it...it would make a grinding noise in the diff during low speed tight turns...changing the diff fluid and using the GM posi fluid cured it immediately...
Enjoy the video Chris. I have a 2002 C5 Corvette the check engine light came on care to AutoZone ran a code po410 came up said to replace air injection valve have you done a video on your Corvette showing how to do this? Any help very appreciated . Thank you and have a good day.
Great video man. I'm curious why you had your QuickJack on the low setting. Also, I just performed this on my 2011 GS last night and it took about 2-3/4 qt to fill it up.... might be due to the diff cooler. I recently purchased a QJ and your video was helpful in my decision to purchase it. Really sharp C5 you have there. :)
You gave me some inspiration to start recording things about my vette! Thanks! Hopefully some day I'll be as good as you fixing it! ua-cam.com/video/J-xibm8F2B0/v-deo.html
To save you some money super tech diff fluid is 8 bucks a qourt. At Walmart and it’s full synthetic fluid with the friction modifiers it’s also a licensed product I just changed mine out with it I was going to use royal purple but 30 year experienced mechanic told me super tech fully synthetic was just as good

Good point !

I’ve been thinking about changing my dif oil since I got my car and your video showed me how easy it is, thanks Chris !!

Got my 99 two years ago will do asap thanks
Going to give this a shot with my Cadillac XLR, which is pretty much a Corvette underneath. Thanks.

Thanks Chris, I didn't realise how accessible both plugs were. Like you said totally never give diff oil a thought.
Thank you for the video I will be doing mine before it gets cold the video is great
Very informative.
Thanks for the video Chris. I can do that.
Just had all my fluids changed. And replaced the AT4 pan with a B&M finned pan. Had the transmission cooling lines flushed. Nice low temps all around now.
Thanks for the video Chris I will be changing mine out as well
Very informative Chris !
“The diff fluid is usually the last thing that anyone ever thinks of” me checking in 😂
Nice video. Also what are the tell tale signs of Harmonic Balancer going bad? I have a chirping noise that seems to be coming from that area…thx
Hi Chris
Always loved your videos and wanted to known Can you make a video of changing automatic transmission fluid ? Thank you
Well, I don’t have one…
Thanks for the video. Need to get my changed.
Awesome video! I need to do this. Didn't realize how simple it was
Picked up gear oil in the Spring and just haven't gotten around to it. Thanks for the motivation lol.
Nice video man!! Very helpful I've been wanting to do the same thing on my C5, now I know how!
How hard is it, to remove diff cover?....Leak..............JB..........
Great Video Thanks I can do that
Good informative video, do you know what the recommended interval is for changing the gear oil? Thanks

I just did a few videos ago. Watch the How To Check Code On C5 Corvette video.
New to the channel, wish I can afford that lift….😂😂😂

What about driving in a figure 8 motion to splash the gear oil around the differential?
I suppose you could. I’m pretty sure normal driving conditions are going to cover it just fine.
Should the car be driven to warm up the oil before changing?
Did you change transmission fluid? Can you make a movie how to?
What kind of lifts are those??
TY!!
Can you leave us a link for the diff. Fluid and pump
Autozone
Do you know where or how to get a 2000 Corvette ebcm repaired.
97-00 EBCM are not repairable, unfortunately.
Was that for the C6? The diff fill plug looks different than the C5
This is a 98 C5.
@@mycorvettelife yep, somehow I thought mine was different, but I guess it's the same, slightly seeping through, but looks like it was changed before.
Is your car a auto or 6 speed? I have a 99 with a 6 speed and I'd like to change the gearbox fluid. Any advice?
I have a manual. I don’t have a video, but look up a video by froggy.
Does that fluid you put on it is limited slip oil?
Yes
@@mycorvettelife perfect!! That's what I'll put on mine! Thanks!
You gave me some inspiration to start recording things about my vette! Thanks!
Hopefully some day I'll be as good as you fixing it!

Every couple of years now that's crazy I flush it every year and a half every year depends on your driving I guess
Thanks for your time and explain so well, amaizing gay, perfect. 👏👏👏👏👏
Is the auto and manual process the same?:
Yes
Just did my 2003. Used royal purple, only I used the 75w-140. Do you think that will cause a problem? Thanks Chris keep up the videos!!!
There’s a reason it’s a CRUSH washer. Needs replaced. Don’t reuse it
