Thank you so much for the update! I'm a bit disappointed to hear the lack of progress with MM2H =/ I really would love to retire there. Thanks so much taking the time to share your thoughts. I do very much believe you shall purchase that pair of shoelaces with your UA-cam slush fund!

Check out the @TEGmedia7656 link in the description. They have (or will have) the definitive info when it is finally released. As I noted, lots of the information on UA-cam is just made to get views and they make a lot of ridiculous claims.

We have just returned back from Malaysia - spent a month there travelling around both West Malaysia and Sarawak. We like Penang and Kuching - Chinese New Year did cause some congestion but wasn't too bad - noticeable difference once everyone left. It was our fourth visit and first since covid hit. We still very much enjoyed.

We still want to travel at least 6 months a year. The reason why we are retiring to Malaysia was that we wanted to eventually live there as we get older and less likely to travel. We have now received our social pass (S-MM2H) and we are locked in for 10 years, as long as we stay in Sarawak 30 days per year. I was concerned that if we waited, anything could and would happen - I understand moves are afoot and requirements will change before Christmas. We were growing old waiting for the MM2H!!

Is buying property one of the requirements in Sarawak?

Thank you for staying on top of MM2H... Cambodia is my objective for now (hassle free) until these other countries get their acts together...

I'll be traveling to Siem Reap in late April.

@@InternationalBigshot Look forward to hearing about your Siem Reap visit... I am strongly considering making it "my hub.." With 12 month extensions easily accomplished for $300 a year I consider it the "last good deal" in SE Asia... Malaysia of course would be my first choice but all the filing hassles (immigration) have turned me off to Malaysia and Thailand...

Disappointingly for me; regarding Sabah MM2H; very recent ministerial talk (in daily express sabah last week) suggested must buy a condo (min RM600K) or landed property at RM1 million. No other terms released yet.

Both the MM2H and the Sabah program seem to be aimed at selling property. Buying a house is an entirely different proposition than applying for a retirement visa. These two things are not really related, at least to me.

Yes Malaysia do want people from other countries to stay longer, live there and maybe work in Malaysia, but .... there's always that 'but' thing. One thing for sure just like any country in South East Asia (SEA) like Singapore, Thailand etc. they want 'quality' people ... How do one qualify that 'quality' status, well your guess is as good as mine. The last 20 -30 years lots of migration to this side of the world especially from the war torn countries, 'ethnic cleansed' countries, poor undeveloped countries (mostly from south asia, east asia, africa even eastern europe etc. which they have difficulty adapting to those destine countries cultures. Increase in numbers of crimes by foreigners also due to economic reasons and not abiding to local rules and regulations, causing the local people to urge their government to stop or make it difficult for these people to migrate or live here for long period of time. Hence, long term Visa program such as MM2H has been changed here and there to sort of ensure and screen those who are really 'eligible' to be part of the local masses. Especially, countries like Malaysia and Singapore which have such a diverse culture, race and religions. Just my 2 cents.

I think there are something like five million economic migrants in Malaysia. The number of mm2h holders is something like 30K. A drop in the bucket. Most are retirees and the chances they will commit some sort of crime are very low. Some have said the previous government wanted to kill the program, but I think these government officials in general are at best misguided and don't know what they are doing. For example, they thought dramatically increasing the requirements would bring in a wave of "elite" (read: rich) people. Didn't happen. When I first saw the application back in 2019, I was surprised how antiquated it looked given the emphasis on how much money you had in the bank. They didn't seem to realize that most people these days invest in stocks and bonds. I'm disappointed that the current government didn't come out with a solid plan like they indicated they would. Makes me wonder if their getting pressured by the more conservative elements within the government. The new king is a big supporter of the plan, so I hope his influence can help get the program on track again, but I'm not holding my breath.

The mistake I think Malaysia is making with MM2H is not limiting the scheme to retirees (50+). People who want to retire in Malaysia would 1) live there year-round (or most of it), 2) have the offshore income to support themselves, 3) have finished their working lives in their home country (most of them) and would not be tempted to work in Malaysia, and 4) might be able to contribute to whichever community they decide to live in.
The proposed changes set the ages at 30+. Who retires at 30? And if they're still working somewhere else why would they need a long-term visa in a foreign country? Also, the current scheme seems to be promoting buying a house or condo. There is a very small group of people, retired or not, who would actually purchase property in a foreign country. If I bought a house in KL, for example, I would have to pay a minimum of RM1 million. If I ever decided to sell that home I would almost invariably have to sell it to another foreigner. Very few Malaysians can afford such a price. Home buying for a foreigner in Malaysia is simply not a good deal.
