- This Is Home is the tenth track from the album i/o. The first version to be heard is the Dark-Side Mix, by Tchad Blake, released on the full moon 29 September 2023.

Written and produced by Peter Gabriel, This Is Home is, he says, ‘a love song.’
‘It began with inspiration from some of the great Tamla Motown rhythm sections so we’re trying to recreate that in a modern way, complete with the tambourine and handclaps. The groove I like a lot, Tony Levin does a great bass part there.’
‘I did an unusual thing for me in that I tried doing this low voice / high voice thing, so you get this almost conversational voice at the beginning and the second part is a higher, more emotional voice. I thought that would be both intimate and emotive to put the two side by side.’
Though he doesn’t appear on the final track, some of the early brainstorming for what was to become This Is Home was done with the DJ and producer Skrillex;
‘I’d had a call from Skrillex, who’s a very talented musician, and I thought it would be interesting to see what he had in mind, so he came to my home studio and we sat down and talked and tried to evolve bits and pieces and it was mainly for this song. He was trying to encourage me to write a song about staying up all night in a night club and that sort of thing, but that’s not really my life so I made it more about family and home and I like it. Though we took the song in this other direction it was an interesting experience nonetheless, and I think it is good for me to be taken outside my normal comfort zone sometimes.’
This Is Home features contributions from a Swedish male voice choir called Orphei Drängar, as well as another orchestral arrangement from John Metcalfe;
‘I think it’s got a groove but unlike most pop songs that have a middle eight or bridge this has two and they are both quite different. The first one is atmospheric and dreamy and we have this amazing all male choir which comes in slowly into this dreamy, garden-like section. The choir, Orphei Drängar, are based in Sweden and I think they get a fantastic sound, it’s dark, stirring and emotional. The strings in the other middle section I really like, it’s quite catchy, poppy in a way. I think John picked up on what I was trying to go for there and did a beautiful job, as always.’
This September full moon release comes with artwork from the artist David Moreno and his work ‘Conexión de catedral II’.
‘The artwork this month is a wonderful piece by David Moreno. I was looking for contemporary art that represented the house or home in some ways and we saw a few things but his really stuck out. David often makes these one-colour, house-like symbols with piano wire connecting and I think it is very unique work. This is a relationship song, so given what I was trying to do with the lyric it felt like his image with the two doors was a very natural match. He was up for letting us use it, so I am very grateful to David for that.’
This Is Home comes with differing mix approaches from Tchad Blake (Dark-Side Mix), released on the full moon 29 September, and also Mark ‘Spike’ Stent (Bright-Side Mix) and Hans-Martin Buff’s Atmos mix (In-Side Mix), released in mid-October.
I can already tell this is one of those songs that shows up on every Gabriel album that creeps up on you over time. Like a Blood of Eden or Wallflower. This album is touching all the bases.
The last one, 'Love Can Heal' is a great song, too...

Peter Gabriels' monthly song releases have been the best thing in music in a very long time! imho. Each song along with its accompanying cover art is beyond spectacular! Peter's talents keep aging like fine wine! His live show at MSG was something to behold, satisfying ALL the senses! Freaken talented musicians with him! And Tony Levin was pure gold as always! If you have not yet seen i/o the Tour 2023, I suggest you stop all you are doing and get tickets now!

An incredibly beautiful song from the genius of Mr. Gabriel!!! It is so refreshing to hear such incredible music still being written, arranged and performed with so much thought, skill and love in 2023!!! He is most truly the perfect example of a progressive musician; in that he just keeps getting better and better. And his voice...OMG, it sounds exactly like it did 40 years ago!! I agree with a previous comment in that his voice is just like a fine vintage wine, it gets smoother and smoother as the years go on. I've been a fan of Mr. Gabriel's since 1973, when I first discovered Genesis via "The King Biscuit Flower Hour" radio concert program, just prior to my 13th birthday. The first album I bought of Genesis was "The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway," around Thanksgiving of 1974, and it began a love that I still have to this day of the work of Genesis and Peter Gabriel!! Thank you, Mr. Gabriel, for your love and care of music, and for the love and care that you put into everything you do!!! 🙂

Timely, as I have just moved back home this month to be with family. Repeated listens of the slower tracks on i/o reveal more each time. Real growers, all of them. Keep them coming!
I took a few hours off from work this morning and had my headphones on while I was buzzing around the house and this song came up in my feed. I hit the play button and started listening. I stopped and said, "Oooooooh..." This is one of many Gabriel songs that just went straight to my soul. I went to my kitchen and started slow dancing with myself as I absorbed every note. I absolutely love this song. You should have seen me dancing in my kitchen 😂😊❤ I'm listening to it now for the 3rd time... 💃 🌟 🌙

Remembering in those earlies 80's when i heard shock the monkey first time at 9 years old falling in deeply love with his work his voice by that time i didn't see her face for several months i though that he was a man of color cause the sound and range of his voice i was a little bit shocked then years later heard musical box in the time of Génesis. Was a kind of discover of a gold. mine kind of speak. So i went to record store and ask for that album. Supposed to be nursery crime. But they don't have it so i bought Génesis live wich has musical box and that was My entering in the progresive rock those years since that moment i become a huge fan of Genesis as Peter career solo too. Thanks Peter for so many wonderful passionate music. You are a kind of God

I’ve never heard of him but when I saw an article that he tried to work with skrillex and made this instead im… blown away this is so beautiful. This reminds me of how good I remember Phil collins was on the Tarzan soundtrack. Just so big and beautiful and composed masterfully. Chefs kiss
I'm a big PG fan but I think this song is pretty average by his standards. Yes, it's got his signature vocals. Melody wise it's mediocre.

Wonderful that all songs on the i/o album is of such high quality. The highest low of all PG albums. Every full moon is a highlight, even the dark sides.
