- Playing For Time (Bright-Side Mix) by Peter Gabriel, released on the new moon of 21 March 2023. The third song to be revealed from the album i/o.
The Bright-Side Mix is by Mark 'Spike' Stent and the track is accompanied by a cover image featuring the work of visual artist Annette Messager.

Written and produced by Peter Gabriel, Playing For Time was recorded at Real World Studios in Wiltshire and The Beehive in London, and features Tom Cawley on piano. The orchestral arrangement, by Ed Shearmur, was recorded at British Grove Studios in London with a number of players who previously featured in the New Blood Orchestra.
‘Playing For Time is a song that I have been working on for a long time and have performed live, without lyrics, so some people may be familiar with it. It’s been an important song for me. It's about time, mortality and memories and the idea that each of us has a planet full of memories which get stashed inside the brain.
It is more of a personal song about how you assemble memories and whether we are prisoners of time or whether that is something that can actually free us. I do think it’s good to push yourself towards more bold or interesting experiences because then you will have richer memories to feed you when you get to my age. You also get taught by every meaningful experience that you go through.’
The presence of Tom Cawley on piano and Ed Shearmur’s arrangement, provide nice touch-points with Gabriel’s previous work. Cawley, having played piano on the New Blood Tour, was an obvious choice, ‘even though I performed and played piano live quite a lot I felt that this was something that I could get a real piano player in for and Tom Cawley is a brilliant musician.’ The connection to Ed Shearmur goes even further back;
‘I thought back to That’ll Do, the Randy Newman song that I sang, and Ed Shearmur had done a beautiful arrangement on that and I thought that maybe that sort of thing would really suit this song well, so we managed to track Ed down again. When I first heard the demos it brought a tear to the eye because I felt so much emotion in it, particularly at the end. That was definitely what I wanted to try and do with this song, to give that emotional journey. It means a lot to me.’
Gabriel’s thoughts about time were, in part, influenced by the work of the Long Now Foundation, and Danny Hillis’s extraordinary invention, The 10,000 Year Clock, which is an idea designed to try and encourage us to think long-term. ‘I’m sure that if we have a chance of surviving the existential problems that we now face we have to start thinking much bigger and longer to make some real headway. So, I think what they do is enormously valuable and there are some amazing talks on their website, so for those that want a deep dive into the role of time and long-term thinking, the Long Now Foundation is a wonderful place to start.’
Just like the two previous full moon releases, Playing For Time will come with differing mix approaches from Tchad Blake (Dark-Side Mix), Mark ‘Spike’ Stent (Bright-Side Mix) and Hans-Martin Buff’s Atmos In-Side Mix.
The artwork that accompanies this month’s release is by visual artist Annette Messager, whose work Gabriel has long been an admirer of.
I’d seen the work of Annette Messager, who is a wonderful artist, many years ago and nearly got her involved in the Art from Us project, but this time I thought she’d be exactly the right person to ask to do something for this song.
Annette has been a real pioneering sculptor and, if you look at the breadth of her work, you’ll find that she has influenced quite a few younger artists working today. It’s wonderful that she wanted to get involved. I strongly recommend you check out her work, it is full of life, even though a lot of it has death and memory at its heart.

easily best of the new songs so far and YES this rates with the best of PG all time. And this mix! I just listened with headphones and my eyes closed, it's evocative and powerful from first note to the last vibrations of the piano strings. Brilliant!

I saw him live the other night & commented to a friend that… I/O may end up arguably being his best work yet. This song & Love Can Heal especially are just tear jerking masterpieces.

Scott Jones, The best concert I’ve been to was Pater Gabriel’s. It was amazing every song was a story played out on stage. Make me happy just thinking about it. Of course it’s been over 30 years and we all are older. Enjoy! You are in for a treat.

I do wonder if the reference to the “…clock, hidden in the mountain…” around the 5:20 mark, is a reference to the Clock of the Long Now. (Since Brian Eno’s name is attached to the clock’s Foundation, I suppose it’s hardly a wonder.)

As I listened, and even before reading what Peter Gabriel had to say "about time, mortality and memories", I could hear a bit of Randy Newman.

I'm left overwhelmed by emotion in the wake of hearing this new song. I've had a lifetime of listening to pg and lucky enough to have witnessed him perform live a few times, that was long ago which seems like another lifetime, and here we are with i/o about to drop, with best friends having passed on since who are no longer with us to appreciate this new music. I am so grateful to be alive and well, three years after the global pandemic, and it seems to me this new album is yet another gift brought to us on the tides of time.

Magnificent as always. I used to see Peter every tour up to So and Us, after that the ticket prices far exceeded my means, this tour is no different... all decent seats are $200, $300 and $400+ - even the nosebleeds are $70 something and up... obviously no longer playing to the masses who came back in the day but for the well to do... I don't blame him, of course... the whole ticket empire mafia and those multi billion dollar arena venues are responsible for the pricing. I admire him as a thoughtful, caring and committed human being, I love his music and always will, I'd just love to see him with his band again... I will continue to buy his albums and content myself with listening to them. .

The Dark-Side Mix sounds more confortable for me. The dry+wet reverb on Peter laments vs the only wet track here, is emotionally superior. The rythmic final section is dinamically more interesting and detailed in the Dark-Mix too. Thank you for both.

I think that his next Long Play will be one of his best ones! The songs revealed until now are really touching and moving. Great lyrics and excellent arrangements! Peter is alive and kicking! Hope he comes to Argentina next year! For me, in my 50s, it´s a real influence as a human being and musician!

Yes, for this track I like this Bright-Side Mix more than the Dark-Side Mix. It sounds -sic- brighter. Peters voice is clearer. I also like the "more strings" in the bridge section.

I still have not decided which mix I love more, but the stripped down simplicity in the bright side mix or the extra brass in the dark side mix. I will say that the message seems easier to connect to with the bright side. Excellent imagery for the end of life reflection!
All I can say is WOW!!! I am so excited for this new album. Been a huge fan of PG since the fly on the windshield and have loved all of PGs music since early Genesis days. Can't wait for the CD to come out, and can't wait to to go the concert! Thank you for all the amazing music. Probably my most favorite artist of all time.

I would consider myself a vocalist (as well as Autistic). My voice is entirely based on Peter's music (and my falsetto on Kate Bush). I finally, after 30 years, got to see him in Sheffield a few years back (The SO tour) with my big brother who had introduced me to him in the first place....it was incredible. I was even briefly mistaken by many (very briefly) to be the man himself there. He taught me that a song is not just nice noise but a story being told from the heart that can't be told in any other way than music and empathic lyrics, an opening of the heart to strangers who become friends and even lovers. There's something magical about music that touches the soul and maybe even the past you remember but that it's almost always based on love.
