  • Civil War was a very controversial movie. I was really interested to see it and had 4 questions:
    1. Is it a good action movie?
    2. Is it a good war movie?
    3. Is it propaganda?
    4. Does it try to make me feel bad as an average gun owner?
I hope this video can answer your questions too.

I've seen many comments on different platforms surrounding this movie that there is no way or it's ludicrous that California and Texas would ever ally themselves in a modern-day civil war, IMO I think the concept of this is " The Enemy of My Enemy is My Friend", despite having opposing views other times between the two states.

People who parrot the whole "California and Texas wouldn't be allies" talking point have an absurd case of Dunning Kruger Syndrome. They might be smart in modern politics but are oblivious to past politics and history. Spanish Civil War is an amazing case; Falangists, Monarchists, Anarchists, and nearly every other -ists except for Nationalists teamed up, and do we have to mention Soviets and Americans teaming up against Germany ?

When I saw this film the final scene impressed me the most. The final battle in DC is what I believe is what a Roman civil war would look like. The fall of the White House was the most brutal with the Western Forces fighting the holdout Secret Service was the most visious.

I think each of the factions troopers look like this:
Western Alliance guys seem to wear some form of Multicam.
Meanwhile Loyalists/US Army guys still wear OCP. It's hard to see but when the WF were invading Washington DC by the end the Loyalist troops definitely wore a more 'darker' or browner looking camo than the almost all green Multican the WF uses.
Florida Alliance are confirmed to be the Hawaiian shirted guys that show up in the middle of the film, so I guess that's their official uniform.
And finally we don't really see the New People's Army in the film at all since they're all based up in the Pacific Northwest.

Thanks for providing this thoughtful analysis of the new Civil War movie. We really need people doing this kind of work, people who can look at movies or the media and who can help us to understand what is unstated or understated in these products, and that can be challenging to do well. This review earned you a sub!! So far, other channels have turned this entire movie into some kind of "L/R" thing and fixated on "TX/CA" alliances as "not happening".... The lack of contextualization IS the point. Chaos insues and no one knows who's who and there are small pockets of what is going on as these 4 individuals go through their trip.
I'll add this, war movies are and have been about propaganda. It is a moral booster, a story told to fill in gaps in journalism and it's define who our enemies are and how we defeated or lost to them. It's to honor our war dead and our veterans who survived and a telling of their stories through their own eyes as well. Hollywood adds it's flavor, regardless if we like it or not, but we are still enthralled by it's telling of events. You as the audience and individual, make the choice to subscribe to the stories by going further into educating yourselves, one way or another.
With that, I enjoyed the movie, and loved your review!!

Why is “freedom” all wrapped up in guns? Why not cross-bows or flame throwers, for that matter? Why are guns, in particular, on the altar of freedom? To me, they are just tools, like rakes and shovels. Useful, but I just don’t get the sentimental love that people have for guns. People aren’t in love with their rakes and tire irons like that.

Freedom is a lot more than that. Free speech, freedom to practice religion, economics, and more. These things are maybe even more important in the grand scheme, but guns are often fought against and they are seen as protecting of the other rights so they get pushed to the forefront.

I don't really think this film is future prophesy or leftist propaganda. It doesn't really have a political message at all beyond the implication of making a film about civil war in the U.S. at all. As for not knowing who was killing who I think you're right that it was intentional; we are definitely missing a scene somewhere that adds just a bit of context, even if only posing the question to the audience more obviously. Also I think if anything the film paints gun ownership positively, the town that seemed isolated from the war the crew pass through is only kept peaceful, ostensibly, by an armed civilian garrison. Pretty good movie overall I guess, it's fine. I don't think they should have made the film overtly political, but I do think making a film about civil war in the U.S. and having it stripped of anything political can only hurt that story. I guess what I'm getting at is maybe don't make this movie. Make a film about civil war somewhere else, make it political, as civil wars are.

Answer to your thumbnail, neither. Just an empty script, with no world building, character development or backstory. Just a movie that's 9/10 boring with the 1/10 of action being decent, but not amazing. Best part of the film is the battle in DC and the sound is the MVP of it all. Tactics were garbage, they tried to make the reporters more important than they were (no soldier in active combat is gonna care where the press is). I could go on and on about how bad this movie was. Garland goes the lazy route and says, I left it up to the viewer, because they're smart enough to come up with a backstory. Nah chief, movies like this need context. Can anyone actually tell me why we should hate POTUS, or how this war has affected the 4 main characters? Nope.

I don’t think anyone who voices a different opinion is propaganda, but media designed to promote or malign a political cause, typically by using emotional, biased, or dishonest manipulation tactics is a pretty textbook definition. I don’t think this movie was propaganda, even though I’m sure there’s a number of things I disagree with the writers on.

I liked the movie weapon accuracy was good but a bit off the last scenes with the SF guys were a bit off mainly because of the bump helmets in a war zone :) I enjoyed it will re watch

Most sf guys ran bump helmets in war. The real ones don't save you either 😊
