  • This video describes Schizotypal Personality Disorder. Schizotypal Personality Disorder is in Cluster A in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual (DSM). This is the same cluster as Paranoid Personality Disorder and Schizoid Personality Disorder. Schizotypal Personality Disorder is characterized by ideas of reference, odd beliefs, unusual perceptions, odd thinking or speech (e.g. elaborate, metaphorical, vague), paranoid ideation, inappropriate and constricted affect, peculiar behavioral appearance, lacking close friends, and social anxiety. Both disorders are characterized by lack of close friends and unusual affect. The ideas of reference criterion lacks delusional conviction. The odd speech criterion does not rise to the level of incoherence. Schizotypal Personality Disorder affects males more often than females. The prevalence of Schizotypal Personality Disorder is about 4%. Schizotypal Personality Disorder is comorbid with Major Depressive Disorder, Paranoid Personality Disorder, Schizoid Personality Disorder, Avoidant Personality Disorder, and Borderline Personality Disorder.

    Odd perception does not mean incorrect perception. As long as I can remember, I noticed some things before anyone else would. And I would often miss what they found obvious.

    I’m just gonna say that I definitely have this disorder. But my job as being a full time private investigator has really helped me out a lot with letting out my negative and suspicious mental reasoning. Being a private Investigator created an outlet for me to express my true self. Before I took on this position I worked many many jobs that wouldn’t last long and I would spend days and nights studying astrology and other spiritual and religious beliefs.

    Schizotypal seems like such a hell to have, that life can seem like heaven after recovering from it. I developed near non-attachment to my own opinions after I learned that I had been wrong about everything. I can sometimes convince someone else of a nifty idea, then change my mind 3m later.

    It’s interesting to see how psychiatrists in different counties classify the same disorder differently.
    In North America STPD is considered a personality disorder, but in the rest of the world, not so much. In ICD-10 it’s called “schizotypal disorder”, and in the Russian/Soviet school of psychiatry it was (and occasionally still is) called “sluggish schizophrenia” or “slow progressing schizophrenia”.

    Do you think schizotypal/schizoid could be developed from narcissistic family abuse? What if you had a covert narcissistic mother who made you codependent and scapegoated you in the family and the gas lighting and blame shifting was bad? You would develop these traits... i mean it almost seems like this diagnosis is one of their blame shifting tactics to take the focus off the real problem; narcissistic parents/family. Its sort of Ying and Yang, depending on who's view, Psychosis (from being schizoid/schizptypal) or PTSD? (from narcissistic abuse) Probably both

    I have been diagnosed with schizotypal and borderline. I have had short episodes of psychosis and have had severe depression in the past. I know that they say personality disorders develop through childhood and adolescence and I think that the borderline traits did but I feel as though I've been schizotypal my whole life.
    Struggling socially and not having many friends, the social anxiety, I've always dressed differently and acted strangely so I got bullied at school for it, hearing voices and seeing demonic figures, and being paranoid about others is what I've been like for as long as I can remember.
    I've always been told that I'm doing it for attention when attention has always been the last thing I wanted. I tried really hard to force myself to act normally, but I never can, it just causes more stress when I do. Also, I had Selective Mutism when I was really young so maybe that's what triggered it off? Is it common for people with schizotypal to have had that as a kid?

    • @jorgepeterbarton

      Borderline traits seem common in STPD, is it really a separate comorbidity? Or at least they /can/ manifest in similar ways with different causes. If you compare DSM codes this may not be seen, but they have actual similarities. I find schizotypy is mistaken for all manner of things unless you are the stereotypical UFOlogist tin foil hat wearer or that guy with a multicoloured dress sense being known as the unnaproachable eccentric (which is probably a lazy stereo type anyway)

    I needed deep social exposure to have my suspicions about other people be utterly disproven. The trigger: a crush I had never opened up to, and the end of high school looming with the suspicion that I was never going to see any of these people anymore- hence low risk. Also, being fed up of inhibiting myself for so long. The shattering of my bubble, and distorted lens with which I saw the world, was shocking and beautiful.

    I have used this example to people I know of an example of the speech pattern of my friend who said he has schizotypal personality disorder. Would anyone say if this is kind of what's meant by the description Dr. Grande gave about the speech pattern?
    Me: Want to go bowling on Friday?
    Friend: It is an interesting phenomena when the exchange of ideas is such that the interplay evokes substantial change in one's own state of being. This brings to mind the idea that one must always question the role of everyday activities in the accidental exchange of information and whether such exchange is happening in the optimal environment. The influx of a particular stimuli at a given time and place can forever alter the course of events. When conversation commences in fits and starts, such conversation can result in unforseen and unintended misunderstandings.
    Me: How about we go get dinner instead? Then we can just talk.

    ASD Adhd ptsd & Sztpd here. The amount of times I’ve also disassociated, it’s almost frightening. Sometimes I thought I was approaching how I exist in society as how an actor goes about designing a character. I’ve also spent years and years in my own world. I’ve never really know what it’s like to just go thru life like whatever with people wanting you and including you, being rewarded for your talents, doing ‘normal’ things, having lots of dates/relationships/marriage etc, I’ve got no idea what being within those societal things/capitalist things is like. Sometimes I’ve even felt like I don’t exist. I’ve noticed the individual vs the location they are in for sure makes a difference. If I’m in a city where the energy is more my kinda place, I feel more like I’m a real person who is safe. Now I’m older I’ve also reached a point where I can tell the difference between SzTP not real stuff and real psychic angelic stuff. I think I can now also stop a SzTP ‘flare’ coming on, or regicnise when its triggered, like paranoia Mind clutter building up etc. Also have to be strict not to eat foods that contribute to psychosis/watch my diet, cuz getting low in Vit D induced a severe psychosis episode in the past too. Yes to omega3, fish, iodine, protein, no to sugar, starchy carbs and garbage. No alcohol or mind bending substances either. In fact I’ve never needed mind bending trippy drugs, cuz my brain is already like that. Lol
    I’m extremely creative and imaginative , and by doing creative activities of expression, that’s HELPS a lot. Also ironically being SzTP type kinda saved me too, cuz the extreme loneliness and feeling nobody wants to be with me, but I feel angelic beings and elementals all around in daily life, those Beings love me and have stopped me dying before. Ok yeah ‘Invisable friends’ but I feel connected to them and they love me, so that gives me a feeling of safety and worth living. 🦄✨🌟🧚🏻🧞‍♂️🧝🏼‍♂️🧝🏻‍♀️👽🟣🛸🌈

    Thank you so much for providing this information. You explained it in the best way that I have heard. My therapist suggested that my fiancé may have schizotypal personality disorder, or at a minimum traits of this disorder. My fiancé has few close relationships (myself, his daughter and his dad), uses unusual speech, has ideas of reference and some paranoia. For example, he is extremely private and worries that Microsoft is spying on him through Windows. He also frequently believes he knows what other people are thinking, especially about him. I had no idea that 50% of people with schizotypal personality disorder have depression. My fiancé has dark periods of depression and can be very difficult to be around. He is very hot and cold with me and can be the most loving, attentive man or cold, distant and rude. I have suggested that he see a mental health professional for his depression, and he is too private and suspicious to commit to going to see a therapist or doctor. I love him dearly and want to understand what he is going through and how I can better support him.

I am just wondering: does schizotypal personality disorder encompass very infrequent, stress-related personality splits? My fiance tells me it happens when I am going through a very rough period in my life and only about once or twice per "episode." I am wondering if this is all related?

    Dr. Grande I like your taste in interior decorating when it comes to Christmas celebrations. Would a person who hates living in a city instead of a small town or village and who try to hide how much they hate Christmas decorations by throwing them out as soon as someone puts them without asking permission from them first as head of the household be a sign of Schizotypal Personality Disorder and would that trying to cover up their irrational fear felt whenever seeing Christmas decorations by yelling and telling the person who put it up that they cannot do anything right or whatever while they are tearing them all down in such a dramatic life or death manner be a lot greater sign of the disorder than say a patient who is feeling too tired and achy for going to after 7 pm parties in the common room in the dorm and so harried that they sometimes feel like they cannot remember well enough which hallway they need to turn into? Does Schizotypical Personality disorder affect more people in some minorities and geographical areas than in others or would that be most of the time a misdiagnosis? For example in the past people from the Romani culture tended to not bother keeping up with fashion as much as other people do and they have different cultural beliefs around romance, dating and marriage than people from other cultures do which could be misconstrued as being a personality disorder if the person seeking help was suffering from real persecution like what happens in dowry dispute domestic violence situations.

      Hi Rosa. I'm diagnosed with STPD too (not really sure whether or not I agree with the diagnosis but that's another matter). And I do desire relationships with people. I'm just not good at making and maintaining them. I often find myself being too emotionally invested in the relationships which puts a strain on them and my friends and wanting to be able to connect intensely with people while at the same time being uncomfortable doing just that. Which has lead to a lot of loneliness on my behalf. Some of that is probably due to the fact I have mild social anxiety and a tendency to get paranoid and look for signs confirming my fear that the other person(s) might not like me.

He confided in me that his x roommate was secretly trying to set him up to get him in prison. He said when he went to the mall he would however see him but hear him and believed he was following him. at work he was pretty normal except for a week every month, he would get into verbal arguments with other employees. A few other guys there did not like him.
    His back ground was he was raised by a single mom, had very little contact with his dad. He had a very pretty girlfriend just out of high school but it didn't last.
    I assumed he had a mold for of schizophrenia. I told him if the x roommate who was a male non sexual type of roommate even tried to cause him to go to prison he would surely fail. This did not help of course. His dad came to town to visit him. He confided in his dad about what he believed about his roommate, he told me his dad told him the same thing I did and coming from his dad it really helped him.

    This personality disorder, is distinct from schizophrenia?
    What happens if you do end up with schizotypal and schizophrenia at the same time ? You will probably get more overlaping symptoms maybe?

  • @sr2291

    The diagnosis is only as good as the education and experience of the doctor/therapist and how they personally perceive what you are telling them.

    when i was first diagnosed with schizotypal, i looked it up and saw someone express it as feeling like a failed schizophrenic.. which was my first thought. i felt right at home with it.

    It is so hard to find any kind of layman's info about this disorder. Something like someone documenting their observations, a mother's thoughts about raising a child with this disorder, anything like that. Maybe case studies. It's hard for me to relate the criteria from the DSV(?) with real life. I'm not trying to diagnose anyone. (I know someone with the disorder.) I'm trying to understand it from the context of a non-professional interacting with someone like this. How do they do at jobs? I'm forever surprised that my friend was able to hold down a job....not sure how he did it. How do they manage should they have children. Do they ever get married? (Seems unlikely to me.) What is like being married to someone like this? What kinds of misunderstandings might arise from talking with someone with this disorder. I've hardly understood a word my friend has said since I met him 34 years ago (but he's always endlessly interesting....seems like he's talking philosophy even when paying the pizza guy).

    • @FreyaDiermayr
      @FreyaDiermayr 5 років тому +4

      yes, i have been told i seem to philosophize about every interaction as well. i think i'd be a good parent as i tend to adapt to what is needed from me. maybe a good wife as well. not to say i wouldn't feel held down or wonder if that is the person i want to see me die. misunderstandings come from not noticing i'm only attempting to make a comment about the world when talking about myself, and i dont want to actually talk about what i concretely said. mostly the concept.

    I'm not being an asshole? I'm being sincere. I really enjoy my brain and think I'm fascinating . 🤦‍♀️😉 but I am a seeker and want to better relate to the journey!

    Examples of each area would really have helped. I'd like an example of a way in which someone with this disorder has perceived an event differently, for example.

    • @DrGrande

      This is a great point. I remember when I was making this video, it seemed like more examples would have been helpful. Some of the symptom criteria for Schizotypal Personality Disorder are esoteric. I recorded a video today in which I provide examples and more detail for each of the symptom criteria. Thank you for the feedback and the idea for another video!

    • @Marnee4191
      @Marnee4191 6 років тому +1

      Still a very informative video. I suppose you have to weigh details against length. It was still detailed. (I have a friend with schizotypal personality disorder, and have always wanted to understand him better. "Friend" is an odd word, because he only contacts me every few years or so and acts like no time has passed, and now I understand better why that is :-) I'll take a look at the other one. And thanks for posting these.

    • @Marnee4191
      @Marnee4191 6 років тому +1

      I didn't see the new video. Is it posted yet? I'll check again tomorrow. I don't expect you to respond, but in case you do, have a question. To be a personality disorder, my understanding is that the behaviors have to cause some significant problem for the person suffering from it or cause suffering for those the know (please correct me if wrong). (If it was causing no problem, one would assume it wouldn't be called a disorder.) What types of problems do people suffering from schizotypal personality disorder encounter or cause? I watched this yesterday, so I've probably already forgotten. Did you say they may suffer from depression due to the illness?

    Wow, sounds like synchronicity, law of attraction, and traumatic bullying in childhood's residue ... that's why I don't like the DSMV sometimes, it seems to not incorporate culture as in the good old "malocchio" ..if you know what I mean....Grande...and being raised by people who didn't have even a grade 6 education. Could have meant, not geting real explanations but made up ones by your godly caregivers. Not to mention, the hearing, what of CAP-D... which is undiagnosed so their imaginations has come up with a bunch of "narratives" to fill in the blanks. Their lingo may be due to "helicopter" parents who they had to create their own lingo for in order to hold on to some semblance of self in childhood and now as adults it's set in stone ... as far as flat affect, could it be downright holding in to their "true" self because every time they just acted like "themselves" they'd end up with a back hand across their mouths? ... Not saying, just saying. Can you do a presentation to "explain" that law of attraction? Or is that old news now? :) Also, one more thing, the clothing, it seems they were shopping at Value Village before it became "vogue" and thus, their school mates rejected them.... Is it paranoia, or self-preservation, as the increased exposure to groups in adulthood are just as difficult due to their rejection in childhood. Right? I wonder how many of these souls could be helped by alternative methods... one without boundaries... as in... the DSMV's boundaries.

    • @christopher9152
      @christopher9152 5 років тому +8

      Belief in omens of one kind or another was the norm in virtually every premodern society/culture. The fact that such thinking might be seen as pathological today, more than anything, is evidence of how these personality "disorders" are in part, if not largely, defined according to the norms of a particular culture.
