  • In this early 90's we started filming videos of our techniques for our students, this is Orange belt (missing the first part of the video). This was also the first time I started teaching in front of a camera. This was also the time when my instructor started switching from teaching Tracy Kenpo to his own Kenpo White Tiger Kenpo, which is what we teach today. www.DomoAji.com

Separate your idea of what "real life" or "the streets" is and what a demonstration is and take into consideration that these practitioners do these techniques night after night under progressively higher intensity for years and years, on both left and right sides of their body and from various angles. It's a well organized and highly reviewed/optimized system of self defense combined with anatomical precision, lever/fulcrum points, rebounding circular flow combos and general Karate with quite a lot of Chinese influence. Its not all perfect, but what does work, works well under pressure and its due to its systematized approach to self defense that they hold this degree of proficiency that I believe they're famous for, similar to Krav Maga and Senshido.. All martial arts have merit and I rate Kenpo highly.

Martial arts that rely on power are only going to work well for the young and the strong. Kenpo falls into this category. IF practiced all the time when young so that it is effective when young, it still fails miserably when old age comes in. Martial arts that are most effective for the smaller, the weaker, and the elderly exist, but will require learning them early to make the motions (not "techniques") a feature of how the individual moves in all situations and responds to all outside stimuli (it is "second nature"). They don't carry the intent of trying to take down the attacker but make yourself less of a target. Slipping from grips, avoiding/deflecting strikes, defanging the snake (hurting what they stick out there, like hands and fingers, wrists, even feet and arms), putting your attacker off balance so they can't be effective in their attack, and taking control away from them and putting them under yours (finger grabs and locks, wrist locks, trips/tips/throws. No MA is perfect for everyone and every situation and every age and ability. And attackers do not fight "with honor" so no level of skill in any "art" will always protect you. What ever art you learn, always supplement it with the best art of all - AVOIDANCE. The best place to be in any conflict is SOMEWHERE ELSE.

@MrPDGee nobody should be attacking older people, honor code or not. How young/old would you say is young enough to still be strong? Im 36 going on 37 and I'm easily the strongest and heaviest I've ever been, as well as more proficient in de-escelating situations and more proficient in karate

Sadly, so many think (thought back when MA first started making inroads into the west and still think today) that if you take some classes and learn some "techniques" you've learned "self defense" and can protect yourself if somebody "tries something". Nope. In fact, for most people it makes things worse because it can embolden them and they will be more likely to be over-confident and therefore reckless. It will take years and years of undying dedication and hours of intentional practice and using it in REALISTIC practice scenarios (e.g. ghi or kimona grabs are useless in a world of tee-shirt wearers) where the person attacking you goes "all out" and you in turn have to respond "all out". And then...you will learn...that the BEST "technique" is to NOT BE THERE in the first place. Learn the arts. They're great exercise if nothing else. If you have what I call the "fighter gene" (the ability to turn on, and off, the desire to inflict serious hurt) and both a good instructor and realistic practices then you'll be ready to (1) be VERY aware of your surroundings and (2) very discerning in where (and when) you choose to be someplace and (3) will have all your "affairs in order" and (4) be ready to die or to kill if necessary and (5) RUN making lots of noise and drawing lots of attention to yourself and your attackers and only if that fails (6) meet your unfortunate and unwanted conflict using every fiber of your being and every object in the areas as a "weapon at hand" and take it to its necessary conclusion.

Comically outdated. This woman would get her ass kicked in a street fight.
