    I'm new to Karate and fighting but this guy really does seem to me that he knows what he's talking about. I've watched some other videos and their instructions and techniques were not as good as the guy in this video. Thanks Mr. Lewis for the great knowledge. I'm only a purple belt in Shotokan Karate, not an expert yet.

    Do these techniques involve a hidden agenda, i.e. feminism? Why do you keep striking the "attacker" in the nuts for? Why does the "attacker" go down always saying "Oi!" or some affect? It's the one that's doing the punching and kicking that should be making such sounds i.e. "YAAA!" etc. This is supposed to be a karate class, not a feminist class.

    this is a perfect defence, as long as the attacker standstill and no moving to give enough time to the victim so she can make her move ............ let's say for about 5 minutes till she gets the right position to make her move.

    I do have a question won't the Opponent see the the other arm coming on Simitar?????

    • @LeAnnRathbone
      @LeAnnRathbone 6 днів тому

      If you strike the arm down, it jerks them forward. Plus, on the streets, it will be much faster, and the motion won't be so exaggerated. We practice exaggerated moves because in a fight, that same move is cut in half due to the speed of a street fight

  • @chuckhodges8647

    This may look feasible in the dojo but would never work as self defense in the streets!

    If you release the internally rotated tension on the lead foot by letting the toes turn out, you lose the internal core tensions that drive the strike from the floor, up.

    With all do respect, to you and your style, these techniques just wont work in a true street confrontation. My instructor taught if a person has to deliver more than three techniques the fight is lost. Many years ago, when i was a police officer, i investigated a confrontation at a burger shop. A young lady advised she was a black belt in TKD, had sustained a broken nose and was crying. She just kept repeating, it doesn't work, it doesn't work. She provoked a situation with a male customer, over a drive up service argument. She approached his vehicle, and challenged him, when he got out. She delivered a round kick to his torso which had no effect. He punched her in the face, dropped her, and then left. That is when i arrived. She had lost all her confidence in her abilities and her art. There was a study done years ago that the majority of black belts of any martial art, will usually lose their first street confrontation, without any actual fighting experience. It is not my intention to demean martial arts, but students have to understand that the dojo and the street, are two completely different places. And train accordingly.

    You have quite an arsenal of techniques; very cool. You were prepared well to defend yourself. It’s just a matter of intent to use any of them for your self defense. I never cared for sparring and I do little of it with my students. I prefer, and so do they, to drill, drill, drill. I’m reminded of a quote, allegedly ascribed to the late Okinawa Master Sensei Choki Motobu, “Karate is not for the battlefield nor is it for the sports arena.” Yup, he understood. Great work Sensei Rathbone! Keep training!😀

    The thing that kenpo gets right is targeting vulnerable areas of the body. In the abstract, this is a good principle to follow in a self-defense scenario. My problem is with the execution. Staying directly in front of the opponent and keeping your head high while striking is defensively irresponsible. The techniques here can be improved with more footwork: create an angle toward the opponent's outside, constantly moving and hitting and keeping your chin tucked.
