    Ahh that sucks! We have done a couple IKEA vanity door hacks now and we love them! We do it because the base cabinet is cheaper with all the sliding/mounting hardware and materials included. We also mount them first and we added a small block so that it was easily to attach new drawer faces (we have a video on it). But we also wanna build a new vanity too one of these days! 🖤

      Literally was just saying 'hmm why don't we attach a strip of wood that spans the front and then attach the slab front?' BUT I hadn't made it to the hot glue hack yet- SOLD! My husband learned about using a hot glue gun to make mock ups from boat building videos and it's become hella handy for all sorts of projects around the house. Thanks for muddling through this project so we don't have to [...as much]❤

    Awesome job 👏🏻. I really like final result 🤩
    Not so long time ago i "hack" the Ikea Alex Desk with an plywood top to be more steady and for change the position of cable management and it work perfectly, the desk is more steady now.
    For the hack I used the original Cam Lock and Nut sistem with the same pattern for the holes and it work perfectly without problems, it's not hard to hack the Ikea furniture if you use the original patterns and hardware from them, but you need to have a forstner drill bit set to make it easy and accurate. 😁

    I installed a different version of the same vanity / sink you all used - ran into similar issues with the plumbing - Ikea just doesn’t give you much room behind the drawers. There are other videos on UA-cam which note this concern and various hacks to work around it. I ended up having a professional plumber come in; fixtures are now slightly recessed into the wall and still just barely leave clearance for the drawers. Also had some issues with the frame racking. Seems like you need to have walls which are perfectly straight, perfectly plumb and true, and perfectly flat - a near impossibility.

Just for the next time if you want to do so :D carefully removed the plastic insert and drill through the original door directly into my new one with a forstner bit so i got the perfect measurement and still maintained adjustability with the ikea system.

    Watching this video while wearing the same Iz Harris merch. The two of you are reno goals, even if you forget to measure thrice sometimes. :) Just decided NOT to do this to update a Besta unit in our kitchen reno and your video is confirming everything I thought might go wrong! The hot glue hack to hold the doors in alignment - brilliant.
    Question though, at the end of the day - would it have been easier to just veneer the IKEA door? Take a blade’s with off the top and bottom of each door to account for the width of the veneer?

    • @BeckiandChris
      @BeckiandChris  2 роки тому +1

      The hot glue worked so good! I don’t think the veneer would stick to the high gloss finish of the original cabinet, and I wonder if it pull away with time and humidity if the base wasn’t prepped right. finishing the edges of the doors would be hard to make look right with veneer too I think!

    • @althea1462
      @althea1462 2 роки тому

    Americans struggling with IKEA,.. a novella. ^^
    Honestly though, IKEA is so easy to assemble, you usually don't need the instructions.
    To customise, maybe glue on some wood veneer?
    To make the drain matte black.. paint it matte black?

  • @alanjrobertson

    Hilarious vid (and great cinematography as always) - although if you were wanting to keep cost down couldn't you have got a nice wood effect veneer to put onto the IKEA unit? 😉 Wouldn't have been as much fun as a video though!

    having a friend who works in construction. I paid him 20$ to get me a vanity from a house that was being demolished. because it was brass. and I wanted to make the half bath look industrial. problem was. I didn't consider the height difference between people back then and people now. and I'm 5'10. and this vanity was too damn low. so I made a wooden frame out of pallet wood and four cinderblocks for the corners and filled it with cement to make a base that would raise it two feet.
    coated the walls in cement as cheap sound insulation then painted them black. gives the walls a fun texture and got some nice brass hardware and lights. steel and wood shelves behind the toilet. but I still hold so much resentment towards that half bath. I wish I had bought something modern or built something. but messing up nice wood is so stressful especially given how much the cost of wood has gone up over the last two years. at least these two have someone there to help. my poor back lol

    It is so frustrating with Ikea.
    They have stuff that is really, REALLY good. And then you buy another thing to complement it and it is just garbage.
    And it's not even like "oh this is the expensive series and the other one is cheap". They show you how they are used together. Finish is the same. One is pressed paper with veneer on top and the other one is proper MDF. Yes - Times of real wood are mostly long gone but the quality of the MDF itself is so random at times.
    I think it's the "curse of well known stuff". Billy shelves were awesome. Real wood. Then they went with MDF to save costs. Still proper Fibers - the typical "construction stuff". Then one cheaper with the splinters to get the wood cheaper. Now it's glued dust. You unscrew them once or move them and everything cracks and is flimsy.
