Great video, me and my wife are getting into the box truck business and was very curious about how the breakdown would work for driving together and now we have an understanding. My extra question maybe you can answer for me is if we have a sleep berth truck running under a class B, if she or I are in the sleeper for 10 hours does that reset time while truck would be moving. Thanks for the info and video new subscriber here ✌🏽
hey there thanks for the support and welcome to the channel. as long as someone is resting in a sleeper berth for at least 7 hours while the other drives, you’re good to go on team driving. she can sleep 7, wake up and do 3 in the front passenger seat, then jump over and drive.
hard copy: Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations Pocketbook (The Green Book) online: www.fmcsa.dot.gov/regulations/title49/b/5/3 The regulations are no different between a box truck and a tractor-trailer when used in interstate commerce. The GVWR/GCWR does not change much aside from which class of license is required, but both are regulated commercial motor vehicles if the box truck has a GVWR in excess of 10,000 lbs.
I got pulled over by dot in New Mexico. The officer wanted my hotel receipt. I had just came from a hotel. He said it illegal to sleep in the truck. I told him I sleep under the truck. He didn't like that. According to your video it is legal to rest in a parked truck ?
not according to me. according to the FMCSA it is legal to rest in a parked vehicle. Best thing you can do is order the FMCSA safety regulations book from amazon. Its under $10 and have that bad boy handy.
I got pulled into a weight station by dot. I got a sleeper added to the box truck I drive. It's bigger than the regulation says. The U S DOT wrote me up for false log for sleeper berth. I was put out of service cause I was cheating I ran out of hours I was 30 min from delivery ( a $5500 load). The officer would not measure the sleeper. These officer's don't know there own rules. I will tell you this if you drive a box truck get that dot passed inspection sticker. They are targeting box trucks!
I saw a driver in Las Vegas sleeping under his truck, did know what that was about until just now. Thanks, but I'll get book mentioned below as a learning tool
Im new to driving box trucks for my company. And everytime I would cross the US boarder with my trainer they would ask why we are two. Why does it matter if we are two people in the truck? We never had issues crossing but they always asked and we would have to explain Hes training me and showing me the route
Interesting …thing is a sleeper birth is a place to sleep obviously but a box truck doesn’t really have one unless you can retro fit one like a semi truck so in reality it’s pointless to have 2 drivers for one box truck because you can’t optimize the 22 hrs a day to drive maybe have a piloted car with sleeping arrangements preferably a hybrid for fuel efficiency follow with 2 drivers doing 12 hr shifts or speed ahead to a destination to swap people out and sight see this would still be cheaper than getting hotels along the otr route they would be under the radar because in reality there the hotel on wheels just an idea a good hybrid gets 40plus miles a gallon so so that’s well over 450miles 🤓
For team driving, can I drive 7 hours and rest 30 minutes then drive another 3 hour and go to sleep for 10 hours. The same with my friend, is it legal?
Let’s say , I’m driving 3 hours and then my partner wants to drive , how can we do it , since I have to finish my 10 hours of driving without switching a driver ?
Thanks for the information , just got offer for non cdl OTR team position for 90 days before going solo. This helps me understand how it should be done whilst complaining with regulations
Great video, just a quick question. So if I decide to go a long with my friend on a trip in a box truck and I don’t drive nor intend to drive but I just sit in the truck with him while he drives do I have to be on duty as well?
This cleared up a lot of gaps and misunderstandings.

Please check your email.
This was very helpful. Thanks.
Is stating you can't team drive a box truck based on the assumption that there's no sleeper birth in the truck?
where can i find the regulations for a box truck

Very informative video. Thank you.
You are welcome!

What about a crew cab with Curtains
Can you tow a car with a box truck and have the non driver drive in the car following the box truck for a period of time to count as non on-duty time?
Let’s say , I’m driving 3 hours and then my partner wants to drive , how can we do it , since I have to finish my 10 hours of driving without switching a driver ?
So if your team driving and your box truck has a sleeper in it, can you drive non stop? Just as long as the passenger is in the back resting?
But can you have people ride along with you in your truck
What about splitting the 14 hr clock maybe like do 6 hours each is that possible??
How many hours can each drive if team
Can you ride with car seats in the box trucks
So is it legal to team in a straight/box truck with sleeper? Yes or No ?
Do these rules apply for hotshot as well??
Thanks for the information , just got offer for non cdl OTR team position for 90 days before going solo.
This helps me understand how it should be done whilst complaining with regulations
U need for hire endorsement trust me it's like that in all 50 states

I don’t think would come into play unless this person is also a driver for the company.
