    Hey, thanks for this video. I was in the Discord a few weeks back asking about how to cut sime weird angles on small pieces and you said you'd make a jig video about it and I'm so happy you did.

    I went to your link and bought the clamps. This looks pretty easy to build, but thought I would support the effort you put into this, so I bought the plans. This is a great idea. I have a piece that I want to make a weather station but need to straighten three edges. This looks really versatile.

    Made the jig and tested it. It works great, easy to build, I did practice on scrape wood for the router part as I have not routed in a while. Thanks for instructions.

    I made it and it has been a game changer for me, and feels a lot safer than other methods I've used to get angles. One little tweak to take this to the next level I did was to also router the same grooves/channel on each top piece. It allows for a lot more flexibility.

    Matt, I built one of these this past weekend and used it to put a straight edge on a bunch of oak slats from pallets. I have one suggestion for this jig. I used pine as my board for the clamps and noticed that after a few clamps, the board started to crack at the point where the clamps mount and the edge. I switched to a piece of oak 3/4 in blocks, correcting the problem. Thank you for all your great videos and ideas. Sometimes I go into vapor lock trying to come up with ideas, but you spur me along with your great teaching and explanations. Keep um coming.

    I came up with something very similar recently because I wanted to taper some legs. I ended up making two sets of adjustable blocks of different thicknesses to accommodate thicker and thinner materials. Of course, if your toggle clamps adjust more than mine do, you may not need more than one set.

    I like this jig. It seems like one could use a thicker 3" X 8" block, with longer bolts, & attach clamps to it for securing thicker pieces of lumber. Just switch to the block thickness needed. When i bought the clamps off the jungle store, they were relatively inexpensive, so making the extra blocks should be cost effective considering the overall savings of using this jig vs a jointer, for instance. I think harbor freight sells the clamps now too.

    Great design and video, Matthew! Simple and effective. By some cosmic coincidence, I recently bought 4 of those clamps with only a vague thought of using them with a sled. I’m curious about advantages or disadvantages of using the miter bar slot instead of the fence. Obvious disadvantage is a few extra steps to make. Advantage seems to be not having to focus on keeping the sled against the fence in use. Thanks as always for what you do here!!!

    • @richardb.4487
      @richardb.4487 3 місяці тому

      This is old, I know- and you've probably figured it out by now. But with the slot, you're locked into one specific distance from the blade. Using the fence, you're only limited by the capacity your fence allows, so you can do the edges on much larger (or smaller boards).

I was thinking cedar would be a good wood to use for it light weight and weather resistance

    Thanks - I’m making this. Got the clamps and toggles etc. What I can’t understand is why you need that edge strip? Surely having a straight edge on the board is enough?

    I really like this. I plan to make one.
    One mod I’ll likely make is to put a runner on the bottom. That way I can run it without the fence and allow longer stock for the other cuts. Is this a good or bad idea? Any dangers I’m not considering?
    Edit… I realized the drawback of my idea. It limits the width of stock that can be jointed with the jig. Guess it would be a trade off.

      What is a "runner"? I might know but not sure.

      @@wizard2319 a strip that goes in the miter slot, like would be on a cross cut sled. Maybe I used the wrong word.
      It is the width of the miter slot and attaches below the jig to allow the jig to run in the slot with no fence.

      I'm thinking the same thing. Also without the lip, which would allow for much longer stock when cross cutting.
