Tommy's Tarbukas was written by Alasdair Fraser for his album, "The Road North." It is a challenging tune to learn, but it is worth the practice! I've learned that if I plant as many fingers down ahead of time as I can, it helps prevent lots of squeaking---particularly with the B-part. Emphasizing the higher notes a bit also seemed to help. I love how Alasdair Fraser plays it so fluently on his CD -- he makes it sound so easy!

It's an amazing album! It also really helps to hear how he plays the tune! =)
I hope this will help you learn the tune! I think this tune is one that I will always be working on, but it's always fun to play! =)
Thank you for watching, and happy practicing! ^_^

For those who may be wondering about camera equipment, I used a Canon 70D to film this video.

Great tutorial. It is so easy to see your fingers the way you have the camera set.

I heard this tune years ago, and always thought it beyond my ability to play. Your excellent tutorial has put that lofty goal on the horizon for me, for which I am totally grateful. I'm hoping that with a ton of practice (along with generous amounts of bengay) I can approach doing it justice as you so capably have. Thank you.

+Lawrence Michael Thank you, Lawrence! This is a difficult tune to learn, and I think it's the most difficult tune I've made a tutorial for...but I think it's still playable with some practice. =) I think the most important thing is to practice it while keeping as many fingers down on the fingerboard and in their next note position as possible. It might seem a little silly to keep your left hand like that when the tune is played slowly, but having those awkward finger positions already stored in muscle memory will really help when you start trying to speed up the tempo. I hope you have a lot of fun practicing! =)

You're so sweet! What a cool tune. I didn't watch the whole thing because I haven't played my violin properly in years and I can't quite get my head around playing a complex fiddle tune anytime soon, but I've recommended your tutorials to my sister Cara because she has been practicing her violin more these days and I'm hoping to inspire her with some great fiddle music! Thanks for these, please keep up with the great work :)

***** Thank you so much! I had stopped playing for several years, too... It's scary and frustrating trying to pick it up again. I thought I'd never be able to play like I used to, but I'm slowly catching up.. It's still so much fun to play, and I'm glad UA-cam is pushing me to practice more. I hope your sister finds the tutorials helpful! =) Thank you for sharing!

I learned that tune (also Paddy) with you! Merci! Had to revisit the B part of that one. Should be OK now at full speed.

You should totally do a tutorial on the song Grand Etang that Alasdair Fraser covers on his album Highlander Farewell. (each fiddler has their own style to each fiddle tune and his style is my personal favorite)

      +Neisha White Hi Neisha,
I've listened to Grand Etang, and I love it! I'm going to try to learn it, and I'll add it to my list of tutorial ideas. =) Thank you for your suggestion! : D I really like Alasdair's style too - he's very technically accurate, but also adds so much musicality and feeling to the tunes he plays.

Michel Chatel I wish I could speak French.. =( French is such a pretty language! I might be able to write out subtitles, but I'm not sure how much it would help since I'd only be able to write them in English.. =/
