Greensleeves and Yellow Lace - Fiddle! | Katy Adelson

- Here is a really common song that's often played around the holiday season called, "Greensleeves." The main melody is a very old English (at least I think it's English?) song that I believe is from the 1500s. The melody is sometimes played more like a faster jig instead of an air, and sometimes referred to as, "Greensleeves and Pudding Pies," "Greensleeves and Yellow Lace," The Bunch of Roses," or "Christmas Comes But Once A Year." (This melody has a lot of different names!!)
To me, the versions of "Greensleeves and Yellow Lace" that I've heard sound very Scottish, so I tried to keep that vibe by adding more of an emphasis on the beat rather than on the off-beat.
It became associated as a Christmas carol with references to Christmas popping up in lyrics around the 1600s. The lyrics to "What Child Is This?" were written in 1865 by William Chatterton Dix, and are some of the most popular lyrics to sing to this melody nowadays.
It was probably an extremely well-known melody back in the 1500s and 1600s as even Shakespeare included a reference to the song in "The Merry Wives of Windsor:"
"Let the sky rain potatoes; let it thunder to the tune of Green Sleeves."
It's a very versatile song -- it can sound very ethereal and mysterious played slowly as an air, or it can transform into a lively dance tune when played faster like a jig!
I played this version on B-flat and E-flat penny whistles! I've started learning penny whistle during the pandemic -- it's a very fun instrument, but I don't think my apartment neighbors are as excited as I am........ :/ I've been trying to practice outside as much as possible to avoid being too loud and annoying since I tend to squeak a lot and don't really know where the notes are yet, lol.
If you watched my Carolan's Concerto music video, you may know that I have a hard time trying to listen to the music with headphones and hold my phone somehow (skirts usually don't have pockets...) while playing violin for the music video footage. I thought I could solve this with Bluetooth headphones, but I have to say that I think they look a bit goofy for a music video, lol...Oh well... They made it really easy to film because my phone could on the ground near the camera -- I just wish the headphones looked a bit smaller...
I hope you are doing okay during all of this! It's been a rough year, but I'm excited that a vaccine (or multiple vaccines!) is coming! I am planning to have a very quarantined Christmas this year, but at least we can all still connect with family through video conference calls. I miss their hugs...
2021 is coming, and I think things are going to start to get better soon!
Thank you for watching, and Happy Holidays! Please stay safe and healthy!! =)

As a lutenist ( not a very good one!), for me, "Greensleeves" is a bittersweet sort of tune: on the one hand, there are wonderful variations of it written in the latter half of the 16th century which are elegant and a joy to play. On the other hand, any time I am sitting outside of my home with my lute, someone will inevitably ask " Hey! Can you play Greensleeves?" It makes me want to retire to a renaissance fair monastery or something. Anyway, you interpreted the tune wonderfully. Thanks for brightening up a gray winter day!
Katy, you are such a gift! Merry Christmas to you and yours!
As usual, you elevate a song we've heard a million times to something amazing and new!
Katy, I'm happy that you exists! You play your music as a manifestation of your soul and this brings joy to me. Much Love and appreciation to you! Greetings from Italy💚🇮🇹

Greensleeves is the first song I remember as a child, it inspired me then as you do now. I am a traditional musician here in Denver glad there are others like me. A dying breed but not dead. Thanks

😯😯😯❤️❤️❤️🎶🎶🎶 You and your music are so beautiful and polished!! Merry Christmas and God bless you!
It's so beautiful around there.
👏👍 Hi Katy - This is one of my favorite tunes (minus the jig) that I play at Christmastime on my concertina, violin, tin whistle and recorder. It’s called “What Child Is This.” It’s a traditional English carol adapted by William C. Dix in 1865 to the 16 century English melody “Greensleeves.” Merry Christmas! 😊 🎻 🎶🎵❄🎁🎄
Penny whistle was the first instrument that I attempted to learn to play, but I didn't have the best teacher. I think I might give it another go since I am getting a better handle on the whole music thing after nearly six years of violin lessons. Enjoyed the video as always. Merry Christmas. See you in 2021.
Merry Christmas Katy, may God bless and keep you by His grace in Christ. May His Spirit give you joy and peace. Always.
soul uplifting
Hi Katy! Just lovely! So talented. Love how you depicted our home state of Colorado so beautifully. My dad always said, if you don't like the weather, here
just wait a minute - it'll change. The snowy cloudy and cold frosty to sunny and bright all in span of one song 🌲❄🌲⛄☃️
Beautiful! Funny I was just learning and playing this one when your notification popped up lol. It was like someone was saying “you could be like this one day”
May you keep making beautiful music like always you know how to do and I really wish you the best of blessings Katy and stay safe out there

As far as training my pinky to learn to work it’s gonna take a lot of time and conscious effort.
That was the answer I got from several other You Tune Channels from asking this question about training your pinkie.
One surprise I got recently from my niece is she said I am a natural at the violin!
If you notice a lot of editing in this text, it’s because I’m trying to learn to use the microphone with the iPad :)>
