  • I went to the former village of Khatyn just north of #minsk in #belarus one of the scenes of one of the most notorious war crimes of WW2. I also talk about the attempts at rewriting history and the rehabilitation of those who carried out these atrocities.

You are walking on graves of Polish petty nobelty who lived there and got muredered. No, I am not making a mistake, Chatyn/khatyn was populated by Polish farmers and it is not the same as Katyn near Smoleńsk. The monument in the cemetery depicts 56 y.o. Józef Kamiński, a Poliish village blacksmith that survived the massacre and inferno.
The massacre was headed by the infamous SS-Sturmbannführer Oskar Dirlewanger of 118 Batallion Schutzmannschaft, later responsible for murdering Poles in 1944.

I was born in the Byelorussian SSR in 1970, which was part of the USSR at the time and is now Belarus. I grew up in the Soviet Union and completed my high school education there. My teachers were veterans of World War II. We had meetings with the veterans of World War II two or three times a year. I had neighbours who were participants in World War II, or as they called it in the Soviet Union, the Great Patriotic War. This is how I heard many stories about those times. My grandmother was 41 in 1941, and I heard many stories from her. There was one veteran that I helped. Mostly, I gave him a lift when he needed it or brought some items to him from a shop. The veterans always gathered together on May 9 (local Victory Day). The government representatives gave them cash payments and organised some modest banquets with concerts by school pupils. And then he shared with me how it all was. In 2012, he told me that the organisers of those meetings added some brief political overviews to the veterans' gatherings, and he was told that Ukrainians burned those Khatyn people in 1943, not Germans. And that was kind of a revelation for him. The same was true for me. I had always been taught in the Soviet school that it was German SS soldiers who were responsible. I understand now that it was just the beginning of the political tensions between Russia and Ukraine. This is what the current Russian propaganda says: that Ukrainian Nazis killed Soviet people during World War II and today Ukrainian Nazis have come to power in Ukraine, and Russians have to save the world. Oh, dear!

It's because the Ukrainian Banderites did engage in mass murder in WW2 of Jews, Poles, Roma, Belarusians etc and were direct accomplices in the Holocaust. This is historical fact. It's also fact that the very same forces through US help have seized Ukraine with the US now using the Ukrainian working class men as proxies in their war against Russia, all the while they and the local comprador, parasitic capitalist class continue in the looting of Ukraine under the convenient cover of 'democracy' and 'freedom'.

Dear Niall, thank you for reminding of creepy nazi terror. Yes, you were completely right, when you mentioned Croatia in the Khatyn's context. During the WWII ukrainian nationalists were absolute twins of croatian nationalists ("ustasha") with their concentration camp Jasenovac and massacres of serbs, jews and gypcies. What's interesting: after WWII many of ukrainian and croatian nationalists (first of all, Ante Pavelic and Stephen Bandera) have fled to West with help of British secret services, and then they were used by SIS against USSR and Yugoslavia. For example, Australian military intelligence had been preparing croatian "ustasha" terrorists, who commited a few murders and other acts of terror between 1963 and 1973. That explains, why Jaroslav Gunko was welcomed by the Canadian parliament, since Canada and Australia are members of British Commonwealth, and after WWII a lot of "ustasha" and "banderivtsi" have settled there. Ukrainian and Croatian nationalists are the perfect instrument for igniting civil wars, what was proved by jugoslavian and ukrainian history.

His name is Jarosław Hunka, officer of SS Galizien, the ukrainian SS Galizien, serving 3rdReich was organizing mass murder of Polish civilians in the Wołyń and East Małopoplska region, województwa Łuck, Stanisławów, Tarnopol, Lwów. At least 250 thousand Poles, mostly women, children, infants and elderly were besta;lly tortured, mutilated and murdered by bands of Ukrainian villagers led by SSGaliziem equipped with arms supplied by German administration and assured impunity. This beast received standing ovation by whole chamber of Canadian parliament, presidents Zelensky and Trudeau. BTW PresidentKuchma admitted to half a million Polish victims of SS Galizien and UPA, but this info has evaporated since.

@@AndrewTubbiolo There is no pride in repression of sovereign states and preventing them from their own destiny. Suppression leads to alternatives either through theft or self-development. Import-substitution becomes the goal, no matter the cost. Kowtowing or slavery is not survivable. Canadian heritage has been indigenous elimination and now extends to Canadian citizens. Outside my door is evidence of this and in the coming winter months, there are tents everywhere and as a result, even now in October, are severe illnesses and death from poor nutrition and cold not attributable to drugs and alcoholism. The idea that containment is 'great work' is disgusting to humanity. We witness this in Gaza.

Interesting stuff mate. I believe the superb WW2 film 'Idi i Smotri?' or Come and See in English, featured some of these events during its filming and is the best and most heartbreaking WW2 film I've ever seen and I would urge everybody to watch. It's a shame others are afraid to speak out about the way the current global situation is moving towards fascist states. And states that once fought Hitler and The Oswald Moseley's Blackshirts in London's East End now embrace similar policies which millions gave their lives to fight off.
PS,I wonder if you could do a piece on the true story behind the film Defiance at some stage? I'm sure you know of or will research those circumstances as they took place in and around Belarus in the early 1940s.

This village, you spelled as Khatyn, should be spelled as CHATYŃ was a Polish village whereas Polish farmers lived, the were called szlachta zagrodowa meaning petty nobelty that farmed their own plots with their own hands without hired workers. In 1863 they were deprived nobelty title by thsa Alexander IInd, as repression for the 1863 January national liberation uprising. Viktor Yanukowicz, former president of Ukraine comes from such village in Belarus, called Yanuki, located in Vitebsk region, he was raised by his grandma from Warsaw.
