Self-validation is a distinctive DBT skill that focuses on accepting the emotions you are experiencing. If you have trouble regulating your emotions, then you probably have a hard time accepting them in the first place as well.

I love the way you are structuring the process. Concise, simple, short, very effective. My brain loves short simple processes. PLEASE KEEP DOING THESE VIDEOS SO I CAN FOLOW THE STEPS AND LEARN AND UNFOLD MY EMOTIONS WITHOUT BEATING MYSELF UP ABOUT THEM ❤

Dear DBT, can you please help us understand what is the purpose of Step 3 Understanding? Why are we doing this step? How does it help us?
Is it, for example, that by understanding the events that caused these uncomfortable emotions, we can then have self-empathy ... and then we can say to ourselves things like "Anyone who went through that experience would feel that way?" or "It is understandable and reasonable that you would feel that way, that is a very human response"
    Thank you for your help

Hi random person here. Understanding means knowing why you feel invalidated in the first place. This means going right back to the beginning. For example for me understanding is my mother was emotionally neglectful, she didn't hug me or never said she loved me, she didn't have the skills to do so and I've learnt to radically accept that and now it is just a fact that has contributed to my disorder. I feel invalidated because I was validated as a child by my mother. So figuring out this working through it accepting it and learning to validate myself is part of understanding. Hope this helps xo

How is it that people can feel an emotion but then can let it go?
Ive always had trouble stopping myself from crying since I was young. I keep hearing how people are embarrassed of me, from my mom and teachers and others. Even if I find a safe place to cry and let it out, that feeling won’t leave until the next day it seems.

Hi I'm just a random person. Validation is under emotion regulation from what I can remember it's just called self validation. There are 2 DBT workbooks one for the teachers and one for the students they both a very different.
