Kia ora Petty, shot for the videos! I have a copy of your gear list right next to the Kennettses one as a reference for when I'm researching/buying what I want in my own. Appreciated!
Kia ora Yonel, no worries. We are stoked we made the effort to put these together. I still watch one now and then for a laugh- great memories and an unforgettable experience. You will love it! (When you get home 😄).
Hi Steve. I was looking at biking the South Island in 2023 but after watching your trip have decided to give the whole country a go. I'm a big sweater and would probably need fresh gear each day or be extremely smelly and passably still damp. Is there much opportunity to wash gear on the trip. Also charging electrics on the trip. Did you use battery pacs or just charged where you could. Greg
Good on you! I would highly recommend doing both islands. Sweater - You and me both mate, it's a curse. I don't think you need a fresh kit every day, however. I would take two pairs of bibs and try not to go over two days before changing into a fresh pair. With the top, I now wear Marino so you can get 3-4 days before it needs a wash. Something to consider - you are going to get smelly, embrace it. In regards to washing gear, yea, depending on your accommodation there was nearly always somewhere to wash/dry clothes within 1-3 days ride. Electrics - again, nearly always an opportunity to charge kit within 1-2 days ride. I use a battery pack and would charge that before anything else.
Hi, yea realised after I didn’t say what they were... Wheelworks flite “enduro”. My tyre choice was against the TA trend of narrow - I used 29 x 2.6 teravail Chumbers. They were great and I can roll as fast as the next guy on 2.2’s however they wore out fast. I wouldn’t be shy about using wider tyres as long as the are light versions. www.wheelworks.co.nz/shop-2/mountain-wheels/enduro/flite-wide-carbon-enduro/
Hey Steve. Lyndon here. Hey great series of the TA and good practical information. I am a really keen to do the TA in 2023. Just question I have to start from scratch with my bike and bike stuff. Can you tell me how much to budget for a bike or better still what was your setup worth. Thanks heaps in advance LH
Hey Lyndon, sorry for the delay in responding mate. How much to spend? That’s a BIG topic and honestly depends on you. As with so many sports that involve kit, you can spend little or a stupid amount of money on it depending on how willing you are to reach into your pocket.. Provided you had some camping equipment, I’m sure you could buy a secondhand MTB, give it a good service, and find some seconds bags, etc for under $1k. Or, you could go nuts on a flash bike and stuff. Either way, you would have a great time 😉
Hi Sharon! Thanks. Yea, we plan on it. I think I have footage to put together a vid of the Kahurangi 500. I will get around to it 🙄. I used a Maverick Mini.
Hey there Benjamin, I use Profile Designs aero bars, they have spacers available to bring them up. I think I used 40mm. 👍 www.evocycles.co.nz/Product/186020/product?variation_id=186023&gclid=EAIaIQobChMI25aN37Hu9gIVS5JmAh3SvQMBEAQYASABEgINcPD_BwE
Hey Steve, how did you like your Ergon grips? I've been looking at the same ones but I'm concerned that they may be too thick for the more technical trails and result in poorer handling than a thinner set. Cheers
Heya, Ergon’s are great. I have used them in all sorts of terrain now from, sealed roads, to really gnarly single track and I still rate them as the best grip for a flat bar. As far as them being too thick; I have reasonably long hands so that may help? I have never felt like I couldn’t grip them.
Hi, Teravail Cumberland’s 29 x 2.6. Not sure I would use this tyre again as it wore out quickly. Also might use a slightly narrower tyre. That being said don’t let anyone tell you, you have to use 2.2’s These 2.6 we ok especially for the rough stuff. Ones in the link are 27.5’s teravail.com/tires/cumberland#TR7212
Looks an awesome trip and thanks for all the videos. I was wondering how fit do you have to be and how much training did you do. I live in Singapore and the only hills have Cobras (after finding that out I ride only on the flat). I typically do 2 x 1hr rides and 1 x 3 hour rides per week. I'm pretty tired after this - although it is 33c and high humidity. I'm faced with two options. Do this on my CUBE AMS 100 29er or be a slacker and use my brothers e mtn bike. Thanks
Cobras 🐍!!! Bugger that, don’t blame you. Although, could be some added incentive to keep moving 🤔... doing what you are doing and adding in hills would be fine, but if ya can’t do hills don’t sweat it. That was about what I was doing before the tour. By about day 7 your body will start to get used to the hills (day 6 sucked for me but got better from there). E-bike - No way man, you’ve got this for sure. It’s so worth it.
Hi Stephan,I want to ride the tour in 2022 and I am curious if you have switched everything off on your GPS (garmin) in advance and which nights you have spent. I come from the Netherlands myself and cycle about 11,000 km a year. Shall I give you my email address so I can ask you more? But are you from New Zealand and where do you live? Kia Ora Derek
derekvanderniet hi Derek, sure, if you have a number of questions email might be better. Yes I am, I live in Wellington. In regards to the gps I used a Wahoo bolt and yes switched it off every night.
Yep, it’s probably a good idea to spend time learning how to do basic bike maintenance before any trip. Some local bike shops don’t mind teaching this, or there’s utube. You’ll be fine 😊, bikes are reasonably user friendly.
Thanks for making the effort and putting this together. Super useful knowledge !
Thanks for information most helpful; well done Cheers David
thanks for the video! very helpful information
For water filter, I’d use the ones that attach to a soft bottle/bag like Sawyer. Can fold away when you don’t need it
Cheers, thanks for list
Thanks for this, great info
Yep great video. good information

awesome series of videos guys! you should do more. What sort of drone did you use?

Hi there, i'm wondering what you used to get your aero bars higher, i have mine on my bars and feel almost too cramped when in them. cheers!

@@stephenpetty7517 Thanks for the reply man. I ended up getting a pair of ergon GA3 grips and I'm happy as. Bring on the Tour Aotearoa 2022!

Thanks for the gear list. Is your terrapin seat bag an 8L one? Plenty big enough?
@@finnbarnett9694 heya, nah it’s actually a 14L. To be honest, I might have struggled to get everything in an 8L
Yikes, replacing brake pads ? You need that level of mechanic knowledge ? I could do a puncture, fix a chain, but ..
