Tour Aotearoa 2020 - The hard questions
Awesome riding Stephen. I loved watching your trip. Great commentary!
Haven't seen you on the trails or YT for ages. What's the next adventure.
Hey Jayson! I've done a few events. The last one was Sounds2Sounds just a few weeks back. TBH, its not super easy videoing when riding and Ive found myself more often leaving the camera at home and just enjoying the adventure. That being said, doing a video/s is a great way to journal and I may be disappointed in the future that I didn't do more. I'd like to do a video on the next Renegades Muster, so we'll see. 😉
Cheers. Some interesting points in this (like, up until now I was thinking about using a Lauf) and the cassette cleaner for scraping mud off could save some time hunting around for a stick :) Reckon you could make a Playlist of your TD videos?
What is the bag on the bike in background on the video and what do you put in the space below it? Do you put bottles or something like a cranktank?
Hey Mike, nothing actually. This is a bag I got made up for an old bike and unfortunately I can fit bottles in that gap on my Fargo.
Tough day💪🤘
7:51 that laugh 😂😂
Awesome videos of your tour. I just brought a Kiwi Ultralight Quilt to do the TA in 2024. I was wondering if you brought a Compression Sacks for yours. If so what brand and size? Your TA videos are also the best on UA-cam 👍👍
Thanks, Murray! Yeah, I like their Quilts.. more for summer, though - I like being able to kick my legs out. Stuff sack - I got Southern Lite packs to make up a small Dyneema drybag. It's small, like 110mm x 500mm? It mounts on the front of the bike.
@stephenpetty7517 Thanks for the quick response. I did the Geyserland Classic a couple of weeks ago, and I definitely liked the extra leg room with the quilt. Got the Mega in November. Should be a good practice as well.
What time of year did you complete this?? Booked for South Island in Jan. I’m amped seeing some content.
Yikes, replacing brake pads ? You need that level of mechanic knowledge ? I could do a puncture, fix a chain, but ..
Yep, it’s probably a good idea to spend time learning how to do basic bike maintenance before any trip. Some local bike shops don’t mind teaching this, or there’s utube. You’ll be fine 😊, bikes are reasonably user friendly.
Thanks for excellent Vlogs ! One question..did you use a GoPro and if so, how did you edit clips and upload it to UA-cam while out riding the TD..?
Hey LB, yep GoPro and I edited on my iPhone (iMovie), and uploaded where I could; usually at Motels. I was a few days behind uploading when I had finished.
Thanks! Very useful video. You were convincing on the vest , Can you detail what Pedeled vest model you used ?
Sorry for the delay Jason! Its from the Odyssey range and it’s the “Polartec” one. pedaled.com/row_en/men-cycling-vest-alpha-odyssey-grey
Would be great to re-upload this in something better quality than 360p. It's like it's from the 1990s.
Yea, it’s a bit rubbish alright. Not sure why it did it in 360p TBH??
Lol, dingoes do bark, but they don't bark like dogs. Different, bro
Incredible scenery, cool video.
Excellent video Stephen. Thanks for sharing. Agreed on the Lauf. There is a reason they discontinued the TR fork. It sucked. Thankfully gravel became a thing and they could could redesign the fork. Their new gravel fork is by all accounts really excellent.
Cool video. How was the trip? Just subbed.
Great video, I really enjoyed viewing it😊
Just finished watching all your vids. Thanks so much for the laughs. Would be awesome to ride with a bud like Lano. Fingers crossed 2023 for me.
Nice
Thanks for sharing your experience Steve, great work getting to the end…..Chapeau!! Did you have a cooking system with you? Can you share the details of your bike please? Also, did I hear you correctly? 6 litres of water you carried on the bike??
Those were some polite cattle, they moved right out of the way for you...😆
Great videos. Thanks for sharing your journey. Welcome to the USA.
I ride this route every day on my way to work. Nice to see some other folks enjoying it.
I stayed at that same campground at the end. Just outside though. Did you find water at that campsite? I didn't until 8miles in the following morning.
Awesome efforts wow 👍😊 PS what saddle did u use ?
Hey! I was using the Stelle Anatomica. Which is a good saddle if you don’t mind the maintenance/waterproofing management.
@@stephenpetty7517 Thanks for the info :)
Thanks for the videos!
Thanks for the gear list, lots of interesting stuff , and once again loved the daily updates , got a chance to see some amazing landscapes which I never realised were like that . Looking at your bike what wheels are they , they look abit like 27.5 something ? Pleased you got some quality forks and was good for the divide , love suspension on my hardtail . I've just bought a whyte 905 with 27.5 2.8 tyres which is great bike but now I'm wondering if the rolling resistance will be too much for multiway rides 🤔 maybe I should get another bike with 29er wheels, think I might have missed a trick perhaps
Hey mate! Wheels are 29er. Yea it’s a pretty popular size for Bikepacking. Suspension is the best 👌
@@stephenpetty7517 cheers 🍻 🙂
Great journey i live in south wales in the uk id love to do what you have done how long did you train for to get ready for the ride
A few more things to add to my kit after watching this and all your TD videos which I thoroughly enjoyed. 1. Floss and needle to sew up sidewalls. So many times on my Colorado high mountain pass routes (Tincup etc) or even the Colorado Trail I think I'm going to rip a sidewall on the gnar rocks. Also changed to 27.5x2.8 wheels and tires for just these occasions for more grip which I think/hope TD has none of. 2. Cassette cleaning brush and cleaning toothbrush. I recently found out what peanut butter mud means on a bikepacking route near Brush Mountain Lodge. It was only a km or so but bike was caked and I didn't have anything to clean it except bladders full of stream water which helped but not in the cassette or rear derailleur which kept skipping teeth. 3. The Sea to Summit backpack which you held in the palm of your hand is amazing and 1 oz.
Thanks again for sharing your experience of the ride and some insights into your gear. I’ve found it both informative and enjoyable.
I can't thank you enough for taking us along! Really enjoyed the series!
Awesome to follow you on the race mate. Bloody legend. 🍺
Very one has said it Steve, Tyanks so much and head stuff at end was so raw. Take care and catch up soon
Thanks much for all the videos during your trip. For those of us sitting at home and contemplating doing it in the future or dreaming of it it is wonderful to watch and hear. Very well done and not sure how you got the energy throughout to keep posting and editing. Mostly glad you made it home in one piece and had a great time. Peace out and safe riding!
Great work Stephen thanks for sharing mate .Love to know what sort of training plan you had leading into TD.I am doing it i couple of years and S2S next year as a lead in.Cheers
Brilliant review of kit. I particularly enjoyed listening to your sock strategy. Funny, eh?!
Great series only watched a few. Did I miss the bike details. Thanks
stoked for you on finishing the divide. thanks for sharing your daily vlogs
Hi M8, loved the TA series and your Divide diary was class. Missed the banter with Lane though :( Question1: How does the TI Fargo compare to the Steel one you rode on the TA? Other than the weight is there any notable difference? Question2: given that you have now ridden with the fox 32 fork, if you were doing the TA again would you use the carbon Firestarter or the Fox 32 fork?
Absolutely great series of vids, loved every minute of it.....well done and thanks for taking the time to record your adventures. Come back soon...
Thank you Stephen, congratulations on your accomplishments and for always showing your true self, from day 1 of the TD to this video.
Wow, those last 2 minutes came from the core of your heart, I know, I am 65 and I rode it for the first time exactly the same time as you did. Like you, all I wanted to do was get home at the end but now I have had a chance to take it in, wooooo, that was something very special.
Fantastic way to end off your series! thank you Stephen!
Which GPS unit do you recommend?
Thanks for sharing the whole trip. The gear review was the icing on the cake. Well Done
Stephen, again thank you so much for sharing your trip. I was just wishing you'd do a summary, and lo and behold -you posted this, sure many as I wondered about the gear holding you up as we watched you near every day. Plus your overall mental take of the TD. Stoked you found such beauty, and the allure of such a ride. I'm in California, and like toured NZ, and fantasize coming back! Makes your love of the TD that more magical. Also love your oft take of cultural peculiarities here in US. Overall keep documenting your travels! Quite a joy! Cheers, mrT. ☺
Really great and helpful wrap thanks for the effort you put in on all the videos- look forward to shooting the breeze on your experience
Terrific insight and I appreciate hearing about the details of your trip. What’s next?
Awesome thanks for the lowdown o the trip. Really enjoyed the daily videos and now the final recap.
Great summary for a fantastic experience! Thanks for sharing those wonderful videos!
