Hello steve im a new truck driver. I have cdl. I can straight back 53 foot trailers which i drive for job. But i need to know how to back up alley dock 53 foot trailer and 45 foot trailer. Can you tell me when do i start turning wheel to the right when doing alley. Like do i drive to 2 and half trailers then i start turning wheel to the right and when do i start turning wheel to the left
If you view all the alley dock videos, these drivers do their set up with the right ( trailer is going to the left) as each driver backs up - the they all have a left - whenever the trailer starts to go to the right, the drivers will give it a little right ( getting the trailer on time heading to the left) these are quick and fast adjustments. That is why I have so many alley docking and backing videos. Every back into the alley may not be the same. A 45 & 53 foot trailer is the same concept.

The drivers are looking at the rear ( also check the right mirror at times) of the trailer. The trailer is taking to you - if it drifts a little to the right, the trailer is saying: DAVID! Give me a little bit of right - Now the trailer is going to the left Trailer is saying- David- quick - steer to the left to slow down the movement or stop the movement. When needed small pull ups. The more you practice or do Alley Docks, the best you will get. You are the boss of your trailer. It only goes where you want it to go. Remember- when needed, Get out and look. It’s okay to ask for a spotter or help in tight situations.
