  • Join us as we explore the abandoned Soviet era ghost town of Pyramiden in the Arctic. Discover the history and eerie beauty of this unique Russian ghost town in Svalbard. We travelled to Pyramiden, to learn what caused this, once busy arctic town, to be completely abandoned in just a few months.
This promises to be an insane journey as we explore the Russian ghost town of Pyramiden! Despite looking like we are in the middle of Russia, Pyramiden, is actually nestled in the snow covered Arctic wilderness of Svalbard, owned by Norway. This once-thriving mining settlement is now a haunting reminder of its Soviet past. In this video, we'll uncover the fascinating history of Pyramiden, from its establishment in the 1970s to its eerie abandonment in the 1990s.
Experience the stunning landscapes and unique architecture of this frozen Soviet time capsule, as we walk through deserted buildings, abandoned machinery, and the remnants of a community that once bustled with life. Discover the stories behind the locals who lived here, the challenges they faced, and the reasons for the town's eventual decline.
We are going to take a deep dive into Pyramiden's intriguing past and its place in modern culture. Don't forget to like, comment, and subscribe for more travel adventures to remote places around the world!

There are villages in Cyprus that have been abandoned because of the war since 1974. Unfortunately, they had to abandon their property. Very sad history for the small island of Mediterranean sea

@@MattandJulia unfortunately not yet, but I think it would be an amazing adventure going there. It must have been a hard life isolated like that.
Funny how the people there were treated a little better than most.
I’m sure the abundance of great seafood would have been a luxury most people in the USSR never would get.
The internet signal way up there sure would be slow, never a worry just so glad you got it out tonight, it was perfect timing, thank you so much.

What a stunning place! It's amazing to see how well preserved it all is. Also, this makes me appreciate the grand experiments the Soviets attempted. Although it didn't work out in the end, it's amazing to see what they did achieve even for a short time. We need more societal experiments to find better ways for societies to get along and support all their citizens. Thank you so much for sharing this tour with us!

Our son and daughter-in-law live in Longyearbyen. We have visited both Pyramiden and Barentsberg as well as other usual activities on Svalbard. Now we will have to consider spending some quality time in Pyramiden! The guided tour we had was rushed, we didn’t experience all that much. Your videos from the two Settlements were very informative. And you are right about the pull of the arctic. Most everyone who has been there once wants to return for a new visit. After 12 or more trips there, we still enjoy the arctic life and look forward to a new adventure. Was scanning the comments in hope that a former resident of Pyramiden would write a few words about their experience.

Well, Pyramiden was not nor will it be on my bucket list. So glad you went there for us! Excellent drone shots and filming in the different rooms and buildings. When you go (of course you will) to Namibia, visit Kolmanskop which is a ghost diamond town. Bowling Alley, theater, houses, hospital... now abandoned with lots of sand. Perhaps too hot for you Julia!?! What a unique visit this one was. Thanks for taking us there. Hugs from France.

I loved hearing all of the birds that were singing in the background as you showed the gorgeous landscapes. It’s so sad to me to see that this place has literally been abandoned for nature to take it back over. I don’t know about structural problems, but the buildings appeared to be Sound and cosmetically could be repaired as they did in Battenburg. I hope that one day this town can come back to life, but until then thank you for bringing this part of the world to us to enjoy. It’s one thing to read about the history of these places and books, but to see it, come to life on your screen is so much more beautiful. Much love and light to you both. ❤❤❤❤ Nana Jan
PS. I hope that someone who live there in Pyramiden sees this and comments. The school and the mural sort of broke my heart. ❤️ It was a beautiful hotel and I hope people come back to live here and renew this beautiful place. ❤

Kia ora Matt/Julia. Lovely to hear from you again by video. 😀
I wonder if the relatively good state of preservation has to do with the relative inaccessibility of Pyramiden, which discourages potential squatters and vandals from attempting to reach it when combined with needing a guide who will have an idea of who has been in the settlement. Being in/near the Arctic Circle and the risk of encountering a polar bear probably plays its part too!
Fascinating video. You really do visit some cool/bizarre places. The degree of respect and care you show for the places you go is great.
    Keep up the good work/fun.

In my country I have visited places like this, but mostly buildings, but nothing of the scale seen in Pyramiden. Another video that makes me excited to travel and see remote places! Thank you for the care you take in editing, I understand why it takes you so long. I look forward to you returning to Svalbard in winter and experiencing the polar night with its auroras. Amazing video. Wonderful cinematography and engaging narrative. You really capture the feeling of the brief community in Pyramiden. I wondered if any of the former residents watched this - I hope so. How quickly a generation passes and there will be former residents who have memories of their upbringing there which is incredible. It reminds me of the Western Isles in Scotland where communities thrived for centuries then diminished for lives in the cities. However, it is heart-warming to see people returning to these abandoned towns, bringing back life and revenue to such peaceful and beautiful places.

Absolutely stunning scenery. Everything there is so nice and neat and the buildings seem to be really far apart. Did you find any sign of hot plates, kettles or coffee makers in the apartments? If not that would mean that people had to go out at -40c in the wind and snow to get a cup of coffee? Yikes, just the thought of it makes me shiver. Julia, if you like the Arctic, the one place that you should definitely visit is " *Воркутинское кольцо* ". That is the city of Vorkuta (Russia) and settlements around it: Komsomolsky, Vorgashor, Severny, Yurshor, Promyshlenny. That is probably the eeriest place on the entire planet Earth.

Thanks for introducing this fascinating place. I'm sure that some people would love living here for a while. It could be developed as a scientific research center studying the artic environment both on land and in the ocean. I certainty would prefer living here for a while rather than in our present day society 😂.
