Just a heads up your car ramps link doesn't work anymore, i need to get that and the jacks, if you fix the link within the next couple days I'll be sure to buy through your links!
@@DavidPotter85 thanks David, just updated the Ramps link👍
Tip: Start the engine and run it a few seconds, then shut it down, before checking the oil level. The oil filter is installed empty, once the engine runs and primes the filter, the level in the pan will drop a bit.
Bro keep it up! Lets all just fix our cars so we won’t get scammed by these shops
thanks yeah it can definitely be discouraging trying to not only find an honest mechanic but one who also knows what he's doing these days
That’s why I started doing it. Too many shitty experiences with my Honda dealership.

Thank you for your kind words, glad to help! 👍
Quick and concise. Great! Thanks for sharing!

You're a Rockstar! Thank you for helping me change my own oil! I was way too excited and proud of myself. Haha.
You're very welcome 🤘 That's awesome, nice job. And you should be proud 👍
Dude you are the Goat! I no longer have to pay other people to change my oil, I did everything like you did on the video ! Definitely subscribing
Awesome, glad I could help you out and save some money too 👍
Just went to the local Firestone in Phoenix az. I now cost $97.00 to change filter and oil
Time to invest in a car ramp and chocks
Thanks for the video
You're welcome, happy to help. Yes the price for a synthetic oil change has gone way up. Sometimes local Honda dealerships have specials for around $60-80 too 👍
Good job - this is straight to the point

Thanks for the video brotha you da man.
You're welcome 👍🏻
Thanks for the great video, you know I have never seen such a color on oil coming out of my cars. Except out of Diesel engines after with over 10K miles on it.
Maybe has to do with the gasoline direct injection system on these cars, paired with such a thin weight oil
Good video. Hope you will do one on changing the spark plugs in the 2021CR-V turbo. Talking about stupid expensive at the dealer! Subscribed!
Thanks glad I could help. I wouldn't waste your time or money replacing the plugs for a lonnnng time. The plugs in these cars regularly last 150-200k miles 👍
Thank goodness some smart enough to buy the 2.4 and also do a direct easy video on the process.
I’m thinking of getting this same model and so my own changes , but wanted to see what it entailed. The cover I do t like , but that’s not a big issue. Thanks

Filter on Left Drain on Right and do not
DO NOT change any crush washers. Hand tighten both Filter & Drain.
Again
Do Not change any crush washers.
2015 Honda CRV has the original factory crush washer. I change my own oil and filter and my 2015 CRV never has leaked a drop of oil.
Nice! 👍
go ahead
You betcha 👍
You do a good job.
Like most mechanics, you misunderstand the idea for lubing the oil filter gasket. The gasket needs to slide against the mating surface. Otherwise, it may bind and bunch up while being installed leading to a large leak.
Yes you're right, it helps it to seat and seal by lubing filter gasket 👍 Also helps with removing the next oil change
Bravo well sad I was thinking of same thing😀😀😀
Appreciate you sharing your expertise brother. Quick one - if using an extended life filter like mobil1 rated up to 1 year or 20k miles, is swapping filter every oil change necessary?
No problem, glad to help. If you're putting a lot of road/highway miles I would say yes, but if a lot of city stop and go/short trips I'd suggest changing every oil change. Changing the oil on schedule is most important though.
@@JonnyDIY thanks brother!
Yes ! Change oil filter every time you change Oil. 2 times per year ! AT Easter and Thanksgiving if you live in North. Always use best O.F.
Good presentation. Hoping you didn't put too much pressure when tightening the oil pan drain plug. 33 ft lbs. shouldn't require an "umph" :-)
Thank you & yes you're right not too much torque. Dealer had it torqued way harder 🤦♂️ Hard to get much leverage squeezed under there on a creeper though 🤙
Question: do you think it’s necessary to pre-fill the oil filter before placing it in? I know you wanna coat the seal before putting it back in but just curious. Thanks!
I never prefill filters, but youre welcome to, doesn't hurt at all. Just gives you oil pressure tiny bit faster. Just be sure not to overfill because sometimes the mounting location is at an angle. Sometimes you cant prefill at all when its mounted sideways 👍🏻
Only pre-fill large diesel filters
Nice video bro. Could you please share a link to where you got your crush washer?
got a bunch, like 10 pack for few bucks on Rockauto.com
Hi, I have a 2017 honda crv how do I when my transmission oil need to be changed will you have a video on it???
Yes I do have a video on that. Here you go 👍
ua-cam.com/video/5ESIgqUL4ac/v-deo.html
Does the cover have to come of to get to the oil filter? Where I take it they use a extractor and I am concerned they are not replacing the filter.
I believe it needs to come off to access both drain plug and filter. There is a hole in it but its not too big. You can always mark the old filters and check to make sure they're changed 👍
Hi Jonny I lost the first screw you take off the aluminum cover ,do you happen to know besides the 10 mm of the cap what is the size of the thread and the length of the screw ? I will appreciate your response ,thanks !
No sorry, but if you go to local dealership and go to parts department they will get you that screw for a few dollars 👍 thats easiest way, that or take off another one and bring to hardware store
Thanks a lot Jonny ,take care !
Good video man! Hey how has your Lx Crv been? You haven't had any of that engine oil/gas dilution issue have you? I know it's common in the 1.5liter and allegedly not the 2.4liter...having any issues?
Thanks. Nope, no oil dilution problems. I've heard it's mostly in the 1.5s and from driving lots of short trips in cold weather
@@JonnyDIY So it does not affect the lx 2.4 liter engines right?
@@area859 I haven't heard of any
@@JonnyDIY Im looking to buy a 2017-2019 crv lx soon...they ill have katskin leather installed.
I've always been taught to remove the filler cap first to allow it to drain better, as well I wouldn't put the drain plug on till after removing the filter and letting that drain a bit.
Yes those are good ideas. I usually remove oil cap and put funnel in straight away, helps remind myself to be sure to refill oil as well. And yes good idea with the oil filter too, some cars more difficult depending on placement may need 2 oil pans to catch drips
Question...how do you remove the clear plastic/lens cover that is in front of the steering wheel that protects the instrument cluster on a 2019 Honda CR-V. I like to clean the inside of it. Can you do a video on it? Thanks!
Ohh mann youll probably have to take apart the whole dash to get at that thing. Best bet, if you HAVE to do that is get the service manual and look at diagram
@@JonnyDIY Thanks anyway! But I think there is an easier way, I will try to contact a dealer again. I know it is a simpler job as I had it replaced once due to scratches when I first bought the SUV.
Ohh ok yeah I think you're right. Looks like theres a bezel around the cluster that you can carefully unsnap to get at the mounting
You don't have to take apart the whole dash but you do need a set of plastic tools for removing dash panels and the like.
@@njsongwriter Jack, have you done it? I have those plastic tools. The assembly looks so tight around, I am unable to tell where to insert the tools. etc. Thank!.
I was debating doing this but after step one I was like no thank you I will pay lmfao
😂 luckily the dealer doesn't charge too much for the job
Taking the cover off might be a bit of a pain, but other than making your catalytic converter a sitting duck there isn't a HUGE reason to re-place it. I mean, road salt induced corrosion might be a good second reason to replace it, or maybe if you like to test the AWD... which I don't intend to. However despite the above reasons I'm gonna risk leaving it off for convenience sake... which if you do you can just scratch that first step for all future changes.
Hi Jonny, how do I tell whether my CRV is a 1.5 liter or 2.4 liter CRV as they have different sizes (I guess) of engine oil filter. Thanks
The 2.4l engine was only available on the base model LX models of years 2017, 18 & 19. 2020 and newer dropped the 2.4l and only offer the 1.5l turbo 👍
@@JonnyDIY Thanks buddy
@@cying6614 You're welcome, glad to help 👍
That super tech oil is the shit
Been using it almost 20 years, never a problem 👍🏻
Or you can use the B trip meter to tell you how many miles you have to go until next oil change.
Great idea I always forget about trip B. I usually rip off top of Oil filter box and write mileage on it and throw in glove box too 👍 That way I can pick up filter at store too and know which one
Or better yet keep the note in glove box and record everything you do to your car
I noticed your speedometer is different from mine is there a setting?
If you have model above LX such as EX or Touring I included a link in description to a video explaining how to reset oil light 👍
What engine is on your Honda CRV, since I have a 2017 Honda CRV 1.5l turbo. I haven’t done an oil change at home
That one had the 2.4l. Same process just different oil amounts taken on each one. I think I mention both oil capacities
@@JonnyDIY what made you get the 2.4l NA engine instead of the 1.5l I would like to know why and your opinions
@@Per-MichaelJarnberg pretty much same power and gas mileage but I think will be a more reliable engine without the added stress from higher compression because of the turbo. I was sad to see they dropped the non turbo option but it seems all models of vehicles are moving towards turbo engines, even trucks. I like them just dont think the engines will hold up for as long but time will tell
Hi Jonny, In the video you are using Walmart SuperTech oil, but in your link is Castrol oil, why is that?
Ohh it's just because I couldnt find a supertech one on Amazon. Either of them are good choices. Mobile 1 too is very good, I like them a lot. 👍
Should I always replace the oil filter every time I change the oil?
I usually do. Only reason wouldn't is if was just all freeway miles then sometimes can just change oil. Or if real short interval oil change 👍
What size are the crush washers?
I get them at dealer for cheap, but sometimes I pick some up at Autozone, or any other auto store. Not sure the exact size but the guys at the auto store will know which one, for Japanese cars
How many Qts, 3.7, 4 or 5 for the 1.5 turbo engine?
For the 1.5l turbo engine you'll want to use 3.7 quarts 👍
When installing the new oil filter do I need to fill with oil?
I never do, but some people always do. Some cars you can't do that due to filter placement, but on this car you can. It won't hurt pouring some oil in filter before screwing it on, it just helps your engine get oil and build the pressure a bit faster
@@JonnyDIY thank you Jonny for the quick answer I have to work on my vehicle tomorrow and I never done an oil change am doing this to save some money.
Thanks.
@@rsalgado29 you're welcome, it's not a hard job just take your time. Can always write a checklist of the steps to remember and the tools you'll need. That helps
HELP:... I have Honda CR V 2017 2.4L with 80,000 miles. I can still put the same 0W-20 oil?.....
Yes, same oil 👍 you can change to "high mileage" 0w-20, just helps keep seals lubricated more
is it the same for the 2020 hybrid
I havent done a hybrid, but from what I have read it should be very similar. Consult your manual for oil capacity. I believe it be around 4.5 quarts
My mom has a 2017 CRV and on that year you reset the oil life from the menu button on the steering wheel
Yes for any model other than LX I believe. I linked a video of the process in description
Saw a jack also under the car ?
I usually put jackstands under car when it's on ramps for extra safety. They don't fail often, but I have heard of them before. Better safe I figure 👍
You might want to prime the oil filter .
Just my 2 cents...
Yes with this designed oil filter placement you could prime filter somewhat if you like. A lot of modern cars no longer allow you to due to filter placement being sideways
Do a video on Coolant change for crv
Yeah it's getting almost time to swap it out in the next year 👍
Look forward to it and thanks for your previous videos
@@gritch19 you're welcome, glad to help 👍
Is it normal for the oil to be that black when you change it?
Yes, oil will turn black fairly quickly within a few thousand miles 👍
Is the 2.4L engine on the 17 crv direct injected?
yes I believe so, luckily have had no issues with this one 👍🏻
The first year the CR-V had GDI was 2015. It's called the Earth Dreams engine. That's why I refuse to buy newer Honda's.
you need someone to hold the camera while you do these things. i had to slow down the video to see things properly to make sure i did it right. lol appreciate the help tho.
I wish I had someone to help me lol. Glad the video helped you out 👍
Need to put fresh oil in the filter to prevent dry starting 😌
Yes you can prefill this oil filter somewhat. To be honest on a regular vehicle with an oil filter like this it doesn't matter. Theres plenty of oil on parts and pressure builds so fast. Now on a big ole diesel yeah prefill. But oil changes are one of those things everyone does different 👍
at what percentage do you change it at?
I usually recommend between 10 and 20% but I also recommend keeping track of miles 7-10k miles
hows that supertech brand?
I like it. Seems just as good as others in my experience. Been using their conventional oil for years and now started using their synthetics too.
Badass, i wonder how it would hold up in my BMW...but i dont wanna risk it
Im sure the synthetic would do just as well as others. I hear Amazon basics oil is just re-labeling Supertech
Lol
Galvakistan Veteran there isn’t even really a bad oil on the market because all these oils have to meet and exceed certain requirements so in all honesty all oils are good just some are more superior then the others
I believe 0-20 only made synthetically ?
Yes you're right, as far as I know 👍🏻
0W-20 is pretty much only available in synthetic except that Pennzoil has a 0W-20 that is labeled as a synthetic blend.
@@njsongwriter I'll stick with Mobile 1 😁
How long between oil changes on these cars?
7 to 10,000 miles usually. They also have a built in Oil life percentage gauge if you flip through the odometer button. When it gets to around 10-20% I usually change
Honda dealer wants $85. to do an oil and filter change. Damn, I'll do it myself for $30.
@@warrenlun2903 There you go! 👍 Will save a lot of money just doing oil changes yourself over the lifetime of the car
How is that oil quality wise
Been using it for almost 20 years, works just as well as the other brands. Only brand it didn't seem to like was the Mobile 1. Maybe its just a bit too thin
Torque spec on the drain plug?
Think its 30 ft lbs with a new all metal crush washer. Don't use a plastic or semi plastic crush washer or will skew the torque
I usually just tighten it by feel though 👍
The man is living dangerously with only that much gas left.
Good video but I would just use a combo wrench instead of pulling that ridiculous skid plate off. 6 fasteners with three types of drive? Thanks honda!
Yeah you can tell Honda is wanting people to bring their car's in for service
You MUST replace the crush washer every time you change the oil. Also very important to torque the drain plug to 30lbs MAX.
You are right. Replacing crush washer seals as well as prevents from the need to over torque to get proper seal 👍 I bought a bunch in bulk recently
@@JonnyDIY I turn them over and they crush the other way!
@@smosh91 good idea 👍 long as it works. I've heard of people using same one for 10-20 years
boy that oil was almost as dirty as that guy's in LA w/ the Altima.
Wasnt too bad actually. New cars keep oil pretty clean and this was mostly all highway miles
You should put 2.4 liter in your title, I think you will get more hits
Thanks Matt. Its same job with the 1.5l too. Same oil filter just different oil capacity 👍🏻
@@JonnyDIY I figured lol, but I was not for sure. I think yours would be the only one with 2.4 l in the title if you did though.
Can you suck the oil from the dipstick just like some European cars?
Never tried it, but probably
Jonny DIY I have done that with my other cars and take 20 min to do the job and not a single drop of oil dropped
It’s not a 1.5 turbo, is it? They have oil dilution problems
No it was the 2.4l non turbo. Sadly the engine is no longer even available in the Cr-v 😔
Jonny DIY They have 2.4 L engines for the 2017 CRVs? I thought starting in 2017 all Accords, Civics, and CRVs were 1.5 turbos.
@@laviebanale 2017 to 2019 Crvs you could get 2.4l non turbo on base model LX's. Now in 2020 model they no longer offer 2.4l in any trim. Probably cheaper for assembly line and production to just do 1 engine
Or they needed to lower overall gas mileage for EPA
just gonna join the several hundred others I assume already mentioned this...
PUT OIL IN THE FILTER FIRST!!!
ok I guess I am the only one saying this...
seriously though look it up - you need to add some oil to the new filter before installing it.
Yes you can pre fill filter with oil if you so choose I usually only do that on large oil filter vehicles and trucks that can take a full quart+
Dam, I processed ramps like those at Amazon, rhino brand or something I think.
Yes exactly! Rhino Ramps. My cousin bought them on a trip and gave them to me. Worked great for me so far. I always throw a jackstand under just in case
@@JonnyDIY Absolutely, Jack stands save lives. Also just to the general public: never trust cinder block to do a jack stands job.
@@JonnyDIY Also something I just sat down for a few minutes to think through, if it isn't already something frequently covered that is, you can pretty readily estimate the conversion from imperial to metric sockets just recalling that 4mm=5/32" (roughly) it's closer to 1.26 thirty-seconds of an inch per millimeter but 1.25 isn't bad because 0.8 is a nice reciprocal to go from imperial to metric, and won't land you more than a millimeter or two off within an inch. Just a nice thing, started at the classical 2.54 cm/in and did conversions to find something practical.
@@rockysmith6105 thanks for sharing, that should be helpful
@@JonnyDIY You put a lot of time in combing these comments, I can really appreciate that. I'll have to request you not reply to this one, just to conserve your time good sir
The filter and drain bolt were put on entirely tight
I know I hate that. Some rookie mechanics always do that
"Go ahead and change the crush washer, if it looks like it's worn out."
Corrected: "Change the crush washer EVERY TIME, prior to reinstalling the drain plug."
Lol yes should be replaced every time, but I know people who've used same one without issue for years hah
@@JonnyDIYI also bought a set of 10 crush washers from RockAuto, I’m thinking they’re a hardened aluminum. I’ve used the same one for 3 or 4 oil changes, and no problem with leaking. But I make it s point to change it out at least once a year. No probs.
@@carlovanrijk4039 yes it's a good idea to change every once and again at least. The soft aluminum ones do get compressed and require a little more torque each time which could theoretically lead to stripping of pan and or bolt 👍
Differrent fasteners on bottom cover..ridiculous
3 different ones 🤦♂️ so dumb.
@@JonnyDIY Be glad it's not hex bits. Stupid Nissan and Mazda designers are worst idiots! at least, these are regular flat head philips and mm bolts. ARGGHHHH, still it's maddening to have three different ones.
