  • Deep in the forests of the Pacific Northwest, isolated from society, a devoted father (Viggo Mortensen) dedicates his life to transforming his six young children into extraordinary adults. But when a tragedy strikes the family, they are forced to leave this self-created paradise and begin a journey into the outside world that challenges his idea of what it means to be a parent, bringing into question everything he's taught them. Join Mortensen and writer/director Matt Ross as they discuss the film.

I'm amazed at how talented Matt Ross is. He's amazing on Silicon Valley. To think he wrote and directed this amazing movie as well. What an incredibly underrated individual

DITTO THAT!!! It certainly lived up to the advertising that it would make me laugh, make me cry & make me think!!! Check to all of those!! Just FANTASTIC!!! When Viggo pushes the button on that cassette player above the steering wheel & announces "SO THEY KNOW WE'RE COMING!!"......sigh.....WHAT A WONDERFUL MOMENT!!! :) :D

I can't say it enough I LOVE THIS FILM for so many reasons. A vivid living piece of art heart and soul captured on film. An exemplar of the human spirit in the midst of our modern day culture of consumerism. Love and liberty growing in the family

As a father of four who has moved them around a lot I laughed and cried at this movie. Great thought provoking movie. I'm trying to find that happy middle ground but it's such a trial with compulsory participation in society as the laws apply. Fantastic !

It's a thoughtful film asking do you need to fit in with society?. What is success? What's your job as a parent? Is modern society fucked up?

This movie is really well put together. It claims the need to have a different educations and relationships within families and family members. So it does it in a way that portraies two extreme opposite lifestyles, which both of them have flaws. The main idea is to get what is best from both systems.

Good film. Back in 1980, I went hobo for a little while. Hitchhiked across the country. Slept under bridges, in missions and that road life. Met guys doing what these folks are doing in the movie. It's definite worth exploring this world, but you have to know what that means. First of all, living alone in the woods...you have to be in massive physical shape. If you are not in the shape of a pro athlete, you are in huge trouble. And alone? Alone is tough. Ancient cultures did not do it alone. If you are alone in the woods and just break a leg...you could die from just that. So, it's a tough road and hard. But...and here's the thing...yeah, you can bring a lot of that kind life into yours. You can train and through hike the Appalachian Trail or one of the other major trails. We knew some lawyers who made huge money for 9 months of the year and spent the other three months just hiking the world. So, the hippie trip does have real freedom. You just have to be careful about going whole hog or doing it without planning. And don't forget that the outer freedom has to be supplemented by the inner freedom. And that you get from peace and spirituality, from things like Hatha Yoga and meditation. Without the inner discipline, the outer stuff eventually becomes superficial and boring.

This movie is a big inspiration, which suddenly came into my life right in time, when I am searching for meaning of life. I read various books as Neale Donald Walsh, Eckhart Tolle and others and this movie is also one of the most educational things I´ve seen. It tells me "Hey guy, try to look at the world also from another point of view" and that´s exactlly what I am doing whole my life. Sad to say, that watching this great thing gave me more than 9 years of school. In something it really did!

Oh, man, I LOVE this movie. It makes me laugh when they say, "we don't make fun of peopl"...and the daughter says, "...except Christians." LOL. I'm a conservative, born-again christian, who loves Jesus, and hope ALL people understand their need for salvation, and yet, I could laugh! When viewed from someone else's POV, we all appear ridiculous. Let's stop freaking out about what a movie is saying and find out HOW it can bring us together!

I don't understand why they're portraying this movie as left wing. It seems so basic - not political, but common sense. Survival and values, I don't see that in terms of left or right wing. It's only what's right.

Because of the philosophies that they discuss. They're anti China, anti Capitalist and self described trostskyists who celebrate Noam chomsky day. It's just about as left wing as it gets.

I think this movie walks a line of,do you want to accept "truths"(things that can survive epistemology),and those that have little desire for whats real.current Republicans know there was no big election fraud, but don't face it,they've known trump was a idiot, but he brings votes so deny reality
