    I had like 300-400 games in my backlog 3 years ago, today I have 80. GOG Galaxy, HowLongtoBeat and an excel sheet... and of course stop buying games. Categorize, prioritize and diversify, while avoiding this becoming a chore... only someone who loves video games could manage to own a backlog.

      Very true. I started out feeling anxious and like I had to rush, but in reality, I just need to stop buying every game under the sun, and, as you said, prioritize. I have my next 7 or 8 games planned out, and I'm excited to play them all.

    I've been learning a lot from these video breakdowns re: game backlogs and a lot is psychological. I think a big step is realizing it might not be necessary (or possible) to play every game that could potentially be on your backlog. Another is realizing you don't have to have a game on your backlog if you have no intention/desire of playing it (even if you bought it and haven't played it). And yet another is that even having a backlog is a privilege.

    i have a couple of friends that we start a monthly backlog and we have a kind of "competition" completing the games that we have, there is a weekly update and we see, comment and share what we are playing (because there are some coop games and maybe you want a buddie to play) and by the end of the year the person with most finished game wins a game buyed by the rest of the people (of course this is not a race but motivate us to work on our backlogs)

    Without putting together a spreadsheet I easily have 400-600. This excludes steam, which would do some damage to that number.
    I always had a good job, so money wasn’t a concern when purchasing new games, but playtime was/has been limited. So I’ll start a game; but then the new shiny arrives in the mail and I start that one and most of the time don’t go back to the old ones.
    It’s why I’ve begun focusing just on my PlayStation games and getting the platinum. It helps break down the massive backlog into small, achievable chunks (trophies) so it constantly seems like I’m progressing

    That's a hell of a lot of games to have to tackle. I recently made a backlog of my own, and I only ended up with 41 games altogether. Not all that bad considering I own over 1,400 and a majority of them I've either played to completion or or at least seen through to the end in some capacity. These games are also ones that I've started and never got around to finishing for one reason or another, so a good chunk of them are actually halfway done or more. I created a spreadsheet of my current game backlog and paired them up with the HLTB average time for just playing the campaign to help me figure out what game I would like to play next. My daughter makes fun of my backlog (about 80 games between Steam and the Quest), so I'm relieved to stumble upon this proof I'm not weird (at least in that way).
    I've been trying to devise a formula to combine various factors (how much I've already played, predicted length from HowLongToBeat, initial excitement to buy, current excitement at the thought of playing, whether it's a sequel or has sequels) so that a spreadsheet will tell me what to play, and my mind can be clear to actually start playing.
    I'm also going to split my week, 3 days for the open-ended games I normally play that have caused the backlog, and 4 days for backlog items. So tomorrow I start What Remains of Edith Finch, which looks both interesting and short. Wish me luck!

      Good luck! I’ve had to rethink the concept of backlog since my daughter was born last year. Never enough time! So now I’m thinking more of it as a “bucket list” with certain games way higher on the list. Basically, I’m realizing I will just never play through everything I’ve bought and need to prioritize.

    The Tales of Games are very good at creeping into the backlog, and charging interest for the amount of content the earlier games have. I was sure Star Ocean 3 was going to be it when I played it. I am late getting into the tales of Games.
    Btw, Daddy Rowen as I call him, kept me playing through Xillia. I also like characters that can wield blades and cast magic, coming from Terra Branford from FFVI.
    There is also that long grind just before final bosses, which contributes to the backlog...

  • @jfloww

    If you didn't like Chrono Trigger no matter how many times you tried to, then it's safe to say that it shouldn't be in your backlog. It's normal to get distracted when a new game comes out you've been looking forward to, but going back to the other title shouldn't feel like a chore. In my opinion at least, if you gave the game a genuinely fair shot, but didn't end up enjoying it, it's perfectly fine to drop it. We only have so many hours in a day minus all our priorities and responsibilities. Don't fall into the sunk cost fallacy where you think just because you already spent money + time on a game, that you have to continue playing it if you aren't enjoying yourself. Anyways, nice video and interesting topic!

    • @essarell-media
      @essarell-media  Рік тому

      Totally agree. I have an unfortunate many for which I’ve simply said “not for me.” Most of them are games that you never stop hearing about, and I impulse buy when I see them on sale, only to discover they’re overhyped or haven’t aged well. Makes me miss walking to the nearest Blockbuster… Chrono Trigger, now that I have finished it, was a great experience and I’m glad to have finally seen it through.

    TLDR: great video - create a spreadsheet - set yourself some goals - and just play the darn games.
    I have the same strategy as you, and developed a similar spreadsheet to track my backlog. I'm at the point that I rarely (buy and) play new games. And of course gaming is not my only hobby, so I don't dedicate all my free time to gaming. I only play on console, so that cuts back the insane steam sales, but also adds the dangerous Xbox game pass catalogue, which makes things really difficult. I use different categories and filters to help me sort through what I want to play, and I mostly go by release date. And If a game does not click after 3 attempts I just go to the next one. Of course I try out new games here and there, we gotta have fun too! Lastly, one thing that has helped me out is to set goals. Like, I beat 10 games in 2020, so my goal for 2021 is to finish 25. Different genres, they could be long open worlds or RPGs, or short FPSs, I mix them through the year to make things less grindy. Happy gaming

  • @Erlaxis
    @Erlaxis 2 роки тому

    Good video. I've been using my own spreadsheet for both games played and the backlog for a few years now. I have a relaxed approach with the backlog, I do not even include all of the games I've paid for in it. If the games have been stuck in the backlog for about 1.5 to 2 years, I just remove them, even if I paid full price for them at some point.
    I believe that my time in the end is worth more than the money I paid for them, otherwise I would have already played them by this point. I still use this information to try to avoid any wasteful purchases in the future, for instance, I can avoid buying those tactical RPGs if I notice I have abandoned a few of them recently or had a couple I dropped from the backlog in the past. In a very real way, my spreadsheet helps me understand better what is the stuff I really enjoy, and what is the stuff I only think I'm going to enjoy.
    I try to keep my backlog count at around 30 (feels like a number my brain can manage). Currently at 21, since it's been a relatively slow year for game releases. =)

  • @SanaeKoaGaming
    @SanaeKoaGaming 3 роки тому +3

    I have a pretty peculiar way on taking on my backlog, i think, but it works only if most of your games are within the same genre and it's definitively not for everyone but still i hope it helps someone.
    First of all i am using Playnite to have a library of all games i own, including emulated games and Steam games, with it you can also give each game a "completion status" so they get categorized automatically.
    Then i installed a Howlongtobeat plugin that displays how long games should take to beat or complete in average.
    Most games in my backlog are platfomers so my crazy idea is to grind the hardest games out there that i can find, such as Celeste and Rabi-Ribi (in this one i have over 230 hours of playtime and i am not halfway done of things i can do in the game, i will be playing the unintended to be played difficulties and also doing all achievements) playing these games made me much better at 2D games already by a big margin, which ultimately will make me beat and complete these kinds of games much quicker than average, i know of people who already did something similar to this and they tend to beat and complete games in half the time than most people so that's how i know it works, it already helped me but i haven't taken the difficulty in rabi-ribi to the extreme to the point any game feels like mario, helps you to develop skills that carry over to other games in the "action game" genre, not just platformers.
    Then i will be taking on the games that take the quickest to beat.
    So far, it does work (It definitively works if you do the same thing with Shmups), it's not just about "beating a hard game then you are automatically better at others" , but it's actually about "grinding the hell out of hard games" that actually makes you develop these fundamentals that help for other games, just beating a hard game once doesn't do much, sounds like a lot of extra work but if you're beating games sooner than you would otherwise then in the longrun it saves a lot of time, a big deal of time actually.
    Also rule number 1. you need to have fun doing it because if it turns into homework then your brain will actively try to make you avoid doing it.
    It also helps to play other genres from time to time to not get burned out., also i avoid buying games that i know will take a long time to beat the main plot (story heavy games, sandbox games, "addictive" games, simulators, etc.)
    Then also very important, doing some basic math to get a realistic idea of how many hours of minimum playtime i need weekly to finish all games in X amount of time, it really gives you some perspective, most people underestimate (or overestimate depending on the games you own) how many hours it would actually take, if you can only play 7 hours per week, calculate then just accept it's gonna take years at a steady pace (still better than nothing) or change something up to put more time in.

    • @essarell-media
      @essarell-media  3 роки тому +1

      Playnite looks really helpful! I'm not sure if you can manually add console/physical games... If so, screw my spreadsheet!
      I like to stick to genres and games within a single series, too. It does help to knock out a few in a row because you're brain is stuck in that mode.
      My backlog progress has hit a wall. We ended up buying a house a month ago and now the only game I play is "Renovate This Old House."
      Still buying games, though... Can't wait to play Metroid.

    • @SanaeKoaGaming
      @SanaeKoaGaming 3 роки тому +1

      @@essarell-media Actually yeah you can use playnite for that purpose if you want, except that you will have to add every game manually and leave the game's location empty, it is less time consuming that it sounds.
      What is cool about playnite is that you can just type the name of the game, go to edit then download all meta data, it will search for the name of the game and will download all the information of the game, release date, description, critics score, community score, game series, developer, console ,age rating,genre,etc and also cover art, so you can have it look nice in a virtual shelf that looks similar to the steam shelf.
      It is intended to be used as a game launcher but you can still add games you don't own.
      You can manually add the playtime you have on a game and you can also tag them with whatever you want.
      That way you can just filter your games by tag,genre,completion status,score,etc, so it's all nicely organized.
      The only issue would be adding each game manually , but like i said, after you put the name of the game it can automatically download all the information for you with 1 or 2 clicks.
      I am a big spreadsheet person aswell but playnite simply does anything that i would need a spreadsheet for.
      It does have statistics aswell, how much time you spend in each genre and stuff like that.

      @@essarell-media You're welcome just make sure to use the metadata function to save you a lot of time, add the game manually then right click it > Edit, then download all metadata.
      Or to save even more time, go to Edit then in Name type the name of the game and then go to download metadata so it finds the game faster so you can download all the information of it.

Adding up the playtimes I will never finish the list unless they develop science that prolongs life, so, I have thrown away the list and am tackling this differently, that I decided about a year ago and it seems to work for me. If it takes too long or I lose interest I remove the ones I don't want to play in that set, back into the pool and then fill up my set up to 10 games again, sort of like game-poker-hand, always have 10 in your hand. A good strategy to advance in the gaming backlog is to:

    # Do not play competitive multiplayer. Drain a lot of time.
    ▫ There will always be someone with more time and talent to destroy you in multiplayer. You will waste a lot of time on repetitive rounds in competitive games. It's a loop and a waste of time, and it could destroy your time moving forward in the backlog.
    # Use the Hide games from library function. This function is available on steam and playstation. I believe also on xbox.
    ▫ It will help take the visual clutter out of games you regret buying, or have no intention of playing them.
    # If you are going to play rpg's, research and use the best weapons and builds.
    ▫ Don't waste time with unnecessary grinding or inefficient builds.
    # Use guides when you get stuck in games, or have trouble with puzzles.
    ▫ wasting a lot of time, in moments of spike of difficulties or difficult puzzles, will drain your time and courage to continue advancing in the backlog.
    # Avoid most Ubisoft and EA games
    ▫ Lately, some companies have become so greedy that they focus on the cash store first, and forget to create unique stories and mechanics. Greed corrupting the creative sector. Transforming your games into slot machines (loot boxes) and large, repetitive worlds of empty activities (ubisoft recent games).
    # Keep buying games. But consider whether you really want to play them. Beware of the consumerist impulse
    ▫ promotions should be used sparingly to avoid impulse purchases
    # Play one game at a time
    ▫ It's easy to forget about commands, combos, game lore if you've been away for a while, or jumping from game to game.
    # Have a good time ;)
    ▫ Advancing in the backlog means discovering hidden gems, advancing in worlds and experiences. It will be quite rewarding to explore the world of games and experience these experiences.

      Hide games from library - now that I need to check out.

    • @andreluis1469
      @andreluis1469 2 роки тому +1

      @@essarell-media
      # Hide Function in Steam
      ▫ On Steam for example, after my recent organization, I have 176 games (57% games) in visible collection groups, and 138 games (43% games) hidden.
      ▫ Most of the games I chose to hide were based on purchases made: on impulse, FOMO, games that have better remastered/remake versions, and games with a good reputation but very dated.
      # Hide in physical games
      ▫ Even this hiding function is also useful for physical games. Hiding or storing away in boxes to make it easier to reach and focus on games from your current gameplay list.
      # Fear of missing out (FOMO) and Hide Games
      ▫ When you feel like you're keeping that game in the library by FOMO, it's time to use the Hide function to free your time and energy for the games that really matter.
      >> "What Is FOMO? The fear of missing out refers to the feeling or perception that others are having more fun, living better lives, or experiencing better things than you are. It involves a deep sense of envy and affects self-esteem" .
      # HowLongToBeat site and time to complete games
      ▫ You probably know this site, but it's worth mentioning again. Through it time statistics to beat games, based on player type (main, main + extras, completionist).
      ▫ This site will help you choose games with a reasonable time to complete them. I recommend avoiding games longer than 60 hours. Come back to them when you've completed enough in the backlog.
      >> Bonus tip - Avoid these games to advance the backlog:
      Some rpg's (very long, like the witcher). Competitive Multiplayer (CoD, Fortnite). MMORPG (don't even start). Grind/Farming games (Stardew valley, Don't Starve). RTS (big learning curve, takes time to play well).
